Mobile sc.wikipedia

Hello, sorry if that's not the right place for this kind of question, I don't know Meta very well. I'm trying to create the mobile mainpage for sc.wikipedia, but everytime I try the one modified is the desktop one. What am I doing wrong? L2212 (talk) 13:23, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

@L2212: Even when you are editing a page through a mobile, you are editing the same page as the desktop version. To make a certain element of the main page to be visible on mobile version, then you need to enclose that element within <div id="mf-xyz"> ... </div> tags. For example, if you want "Artìculu de custu mese" section to be visible in the mobile version, then you would use something like this: <div id="mf-xyz">{{Printzipale:Artìculu mese}}</div>. For full instructions, see mw:Mobile Gateway/Mobile homepage formatting. --Glaisher (talk) 16:26, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

Hello, I'm georeferencing some articles on sc.wiki, but every time I put the template I see that on top there is not the OpenStreetMap map button, like in it.wikipedia, es.wikipedia, ca.wikipedia etc. How can I put that too?--L2212 (talk) 23:15, 12 August 2014 (UTC)

Parameterized Categories?

Is there a way to create a parameterized category?

Sometimes you want to group/categorize pages/articles based on that only vary by a pre-defined parameter.
If there were a way to define a category-page as an expression instead of a static "dumb" string it would save a lot of work and generally make life easier.

Example:
the category pages: 1-person-games, 2-person-games, 3-person-games, ..., n-person-games
could be simplified as only one category page defined (for example) as: Category:{dd?}-person-games
where...
{ = start of expression
} = end of expression

since { and } are invalid characters in page names they would need to be interpreted as a place-holder for an expression and not as the actual page name.

The actual page-name would be the complete evaluation of the expression...perhaps this is not possible and a new namespace is needed...the example here is just to describe the feature not to really suggest the technical implementation.

So the definition for a parameterized category page could be something like this:
"<" and ">" enclose required parts. (<REQUIRED>)
"[" and "]" enclose optional parts. ([OPTIONAL])
"|" denotes XOR, use one, not both or none.
"...n" repeat previous any number of times.
Names in capitals are placeholders defined elsewhere.

Page name definition = <PARAMETERIZED_CATEGORY_PAGE_NAME>
PARAMETERIZED_CATEGORY_PAGE_NAME = <PAGE_NAME_PART>[...n]
PAGE_NAME_PART = <[EXPRESSION]|[STATIC_TEXT]>
EXPRESSION = <{REG_EX}>
STATIC_TEXT = a valid wikimedia page name.
REG_EX = a subset of RegEx (perhaps these?: d, w, +, ?, [, A-Z, a-z, 0-9, ] )

So when an article refer to the category "48-person-games" it would be referring to the page "Category:{dd?}-person-games" and when clicking the link the user should see a category page named "48-person-games"..there should be no visual difference between a "normal" category page and a parameterized category page when looking at it when the parameter is set, that is, it is in the URL.

Perhaps this already exist and I just haven't found it? unsigned comment by 84.55.110.220 (talk)

Problem with sintax

Hello, I'm a sysop at sc.wikipedia, and I have a problem with some of the templates there. I don't know why, but the templates for the national sports teams are giving me this result: https://sc.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ses_Natzionis

[[Natzionale de rugby XV

de su

Galles|Galles ]]

instead of Galles (it should also have a flag).

I've tried correcting it, even comparing that with the italian wikipedia. I even tried copying the code from it.wiki to sc.wiki, and still it didn't work. I really dont't know who to ask to.

The templates: https://sc.wikipedia.org/wiki/Categoria:Templates_de_formatatzione_-_Isport

Something strange. Will look later. Ruslik (talk) 02:00, 20 November 2014 (UTC)
In subtemplates there were (and are in some) spurious line breaks between the closing includeonly tag and the opening noinclude tag. I removed them in several subtemplates, so at least at w:sc:Ses_Natzionis they work now. Ruslik (talk) 11:40, 21 November 2014 (UTC)

Request for a local delinker (delinker.py) bot, please

(cross-posted from Meta:Babel) - Hi. As you know Meta-Wiki is one of the few wikis that allow local hosting of files. A couple of years ago we decided that uploads should be restricted to prevent the increase of files that are better suited for commons, and the upload of copyright violations. Recently WMF is conducting a File metadata cleanup drive and some of us are still interested in Meta:MetaProject to Overhaul Meta/Image review 2013 to remove copyvios, transfer files to commons when appropriate and add information to other files. I wonder if somebody would be so charitative to run a copy of the delinker.py locally so that localy deleted files can be delinked from pages, to avoid red links. Actually Category:Pages with broken file links hosts 1,000+ pages with broken file links, something that would be so tedious to do manually. I also beg interested users to join the image review and the metadata cleanup projects and help to clean up and organize the files we actually host. Many thanks in advance for your help. Best regards. -- M\A 14:07, 22 December 2014 (UTC)

Bowburr's complaint

I GIVE UP!

I have several advanced degrees, am a published author, and am informed I have an above-average IQ, but I can't figure out (1) how to add photos to which I hold copyright to articles which ask for photographs to be uploaded, and (2) how to add correct information to existing articles. My areas of expertise range from Southeast Asian studies to U.S. history, and I have the publications to proved it, but this system seems to determined to exclude people who are not computer programmers.

If some adept geek wants, I will just upload what I have and you can fit it in. Otherwise it would be nice if Wikipedia really were open to knowledgeable people like me who don't know computer language. The only other website that so difficult is Harvard's. Like-- NOW -- where is the send button?

The file is on Commons here, you should be able to upload your new version there. Specifically, look under the "File history" at the bottom of a page for the "Upload a new version of this file" link. Just make sure you comply with COM:OVERWRITE. Revent (talk) 02:48, 2 March 2015 (UTC)
To quote that page, If digital restoration work is being done on a historical document or artwork, the restoration (no matter how minor) should always be uploaded under a new filename from the original file, providing a link back to the source on which it was based in the new file's "other versions" field. Quoting/citing my contributions to Wikipedia

Hello, I have the unusual problem of citing myself for my contributions to Wikipedia. Let me explain:

In 2008, I made major contributions on Wikipedia to the French version of the “Chinese Cuisine” page and I added a new page concerning “Techniques/Ingredients/Cooking methods/etc”.

In 2011, I self-published the first edition of my cookbook (in French) in which I used some of my own text from the Wikipedia pages but without acknowledgement.

I would like to correct this mistake in my second edition. Does someone know how I should refer to my text on the Wikipedia pages?

Thanks and have a good day. Georges

You could follow guidelines at en:Wikipedia:Reusing_Wikipedia_content, but I doubt that you has any obligation to attribute your own text. Ruslik (talk) 11:39, 30 December 2015 (UTC)
  • Yes, you do have such an obligation. I assume the book will be copyrighted. However, the text published on WP is published under a Creative Commons Attribution license and this has to be noted in your book, to make it clear that the parts copied from WP do not fall under the copyright of the book itself. Instructions are given in the link that Ruslik0 provided. --Randykitty (talk) 10:10, 31 December 2015 (UTC)

Any way to sort under multiple sort keys?

I spend most of my time lately on the EN Wiktionary adding and editing Japanese entries. These present a real problem for categorization in the wiki, as a single spelling may have multiple pronunciations, and Japanese dictionaries generally index by pronunciation.

Example:

The Japanese male given name spelled could be read variously as, and should be indexed under, all of the following:

  1. はかる (Hakaru)
  2. きよし (Kiyoshi)
  3. のぶ (Nobu)
  4. おさむ (Osamu)
  5. せいじ (Seiji)
  6. しずむ (Shizumu)
  7. やす (Yasu)
  8. やすし (Yasushi)

However, due to the limitations of how category sorting is currently implemented, the page can only ever be indexed under one listing at wikt:Category:Japanese_male_given_names. The MediaWiki software appears to use the value of the last sort argument provided in the wikitext of the page, ignoring any previous values. The workarounds that folks have come up with include creating empty pages redirecting to the intended entry page, and using the same entry headword plus some non-rendering character, but this is cludgy at best, and is increasingly untenable for each additional index.

This is a huge problem for Japanese entries. Almost all Japanese entries that are kanji-only spellings, and even many spellings that include phonetic kana, have multiple readings. These entries should be indexed under all of those readings. I know of no feasible way to make this work in the current MediaWiki implementation.

One simple example: wikt:桜花 should appear twice in wikt:Category:Japanese_nouns, once under the reading おうか (ōka) and once under the reading さくらばな (sakurabana). Checking https://en.wiktionary.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Japanese_nouns&from=おうか shows that the entry is missing entirely here, despite the wikitext on the entry page itself clearly listing it as a Japanese noun with a reading of おうか. Checking https://en.wiktionary.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Japanese_nouns&from=さくらばな shows the entry 桜花 in its second expected list location, collated under さくらばな.

Is there any clean way of categorizing a single page under multiple category indices? If not, could this feature be added in a future version of the MW software? Eiríkr ÚtlendiTala við mig 23:23, 20 June 2016 (UTC)

Can anyone please guide me as to the current policy ? specifically I am looking at [[2]] Is it acceptable to use Crișan for every mention of Krishan ? I have no idea how ș is pronounced and assume sh is the closest available English translation Unibond (talk) 21:17, 6 January 2017 (UTC)

The meta page that you cite is so old that it is now irrelevant. For the English Wikipedia policy regarding article titles, see en:WP:UE. Ruslik (talk) 16:42, 7 January 2017 (UTC)

Metadata cleanup

Aloha! Is there any reason not to move all/most files from Meta to Commons? Seems the 2014 cleanup drive stalled at some point: [3] --Hedwig in Washington (talk) 23:38, 16 January 2017 (UTC)

Pages MediaWiki

How can I get access to edit and create pages MediaWiki without administrator flag, directly in specific projects? Is it possible? Thanks!--Асилзода talk 13:46, 29 January 2017 (UTC)

Disambiguation, surname pages and list of people with the same surname

Per d:Wikidata:WikiProject Disambiguation pages/guidelines:

Many Wikipedias have pages which list people with the same surname. Sometimes these pages also have a discussion of the origin and usage of that surname, making them more like an article. Sometimes these pages also list places or other things which use that surname - making them more like general disambiguation pages. As long as these pages contain a template containing __DISAMBIG__, they can be linked to other disambiguation pages. Sometimes pages should probably be made into disambiguation pages or disambiguation pages should be turned into surname articles.

Problem is, not all Wikipedia projects in various languages have rules or guidelines that would dictate when a surname page or a list of articles about people with the same surname, separate from a disambiguation page, needs to be created. In fact, some of them don't allow creating such lists! As a result, it is impossible to link nearly identical disambiguation, surname pages and lists of people with the same surname in various languages among themselves in Wikidata. For example, for English Wikipedia, this is covered under en:Wikipedia:Disambiguation. Is it possible to develop portions of this guideline into rule spanning all Wikimedia Foundation language projects? What would be the best place to initiate such discussion? --Wiking (talk) 21:18, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

Need help reverting or updating an image page

I tried to a new version of Diagram of Hard Disk Drive Manufacturer Consolidation.svg which was the same as a prior version but that didn't seem to take. So I tried reverting back to the last good version, namely that of 19:34, 17 April 2017 but that didn't seem to work. Would appreciate some help in reverting to the correct version. Telling me what I did wrong would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance Tom94022 (talk) 01:36, 4 May 2017 (UTC)

You successfully uploaded multiple new versions and successfully reverted to your first version. However when you upload something the new version takes some time to take hold due to caching. Ruslik (talk) 08:45, 4 May 2017 (UTC)

Coordinating changes among projects

I've recently changed the name of an English Wikipedia article -- from Furnace Creek Inn and Ranch Resort to Oasis at Death Valley (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oasis_at_Death_Valley). I see that the old name appears in other projects: Commons (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Furnace_Creek_Ranch and related items); Wikidata (https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5509615) and Spanish Wikipedia (https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furnace_Creek_Inn_and_Ranch_Resort). Is there someone / some group I should notify about this, so folks can determine if a change is appropriate for each of the projects? I know almost nothing about Commons, nothing at all about Wikidata, and don't speak Spanish. --Traveling Man (talk) 23:58, 10 June 2017 (UTC)

You should request a rename on all projects separately. Ruslik (talk) 08:36, 11 June 2017 (UTC)

Sub-Category Article count

In my main category where the sub categories display is there a way to make the sub category pages display the number of articles they contain?

Are not they already displayed? Ruslik (talk) 17:45, 20 June 2017 (UTC)

How to add custom styles to a page?

I thought of using the layout-grid Material design component on my user page to make the userboxes respond to different screen sizes. It requires custom CSS styles that have to be loaded when my user page is loaded. Where should I place the CSS styles so that they get loaded each time my use page gets loaded? N.B.: I can't place them inline, see for yourself - - Kaartic correct me, if i'm wrong 07:31, 2 September 2017 (UTC)

Sustainability a coined word

Dear helping Forum

Before I can begin to explain my problem, my very first article today was immediately deleted due to breaching rules of containing links to a business and business operations, due to the business is the same as the invention equally to the word Sustainability and Sustainability Professionals wm

In 1987 the UNIPCCC environment group was lead by Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland and they came up with the idea of "creating" a new word referred to as Sustainability. In fact they did not have any lead political agenda, nor a political solution or goal all UN countries could be united around, then came Sustainable and Sustainability as their own coined words. The idea they had found inside the European Forestry Research centre in Germany and they again had obtained their 300-year-old ideas from a CEO and owner of many smelting industries and mining operations around in Saxony and his first book from 1713 where he coined the German word "Nachhaltigkeit". Both these two industries was depending on a constant access to affordable lumber to secure the mines and for firewood to the furnaces, the UN group most likely understood this German story to be about operational safety and their needs to "sustain" the mine shafts from collapsing even the German word for the English web to Sustain is: “Aufrechtzuerhalten” or “Unterstützen”

“Nachhaltikeit” was coined when the CEO advised “future generations” to avoid adverse impact on nature and biodiversity as it will harm both business, the society and stakeholder economy. This situation was to be avoided, not sustained, and in all future business development taken into consideration in their planning to minimize and avoid further negative consequences over 10 000 people did while suffering from hunger and diseases.

I have tried to explain for over a decade why Sustainability was not working and why there were no other green benefits than billions or earned green Dollars, I then decided to coin the word “Impactivation” to introduce a system based on Nachhaltigkeit and how this should be used in today’s modern society. The system minimises and avoid risk of adverse impact creating negative consequences in all connections and in way of being used, delivering measurable results for accountability as the UN still is asking for is part of this logic.

I have now started the company Impactivation Systems Ltd, in the same way over 300 000 Sustainability professionals are wording their activities and businesses as Sustainability and I do not know how I can write about this important development without telling how it can be used.

Can anyone please help me?

Thank you

Asle

Hello guys, I have been receiving "multiple failed attempts" everyday. Apparently someone is trying a brute-force attack on my username. I am ignoring this emails, but it's really annoying. Import

I would like to request to be an Transwiki importer on the Simple English Wiktionary to import pages from Simple English Wikipedia that have the dicdef template and are candidates to be copied to Simple English Wiktionary. However, none f the Simple English Wiktionary admins can give this right and it asks me to request it at Meta. Where can I request the importer right specifically for the Simple English Wiktionary? Display event information in local time zone

Is it possible to get Meta to display the time for Events in my local time zone instead of UTC? Example: WikiClubWest/2018 Digitization workshop

In my Preferences, Appearance I have selected the correct time zone. In my Wikipedia Preferences, Gadgets there is an option to "Change UTC-based times ... to local time", but that option doesn't appear under Meta, Preferences, Gadgets. Mitch Ames (talk) 08:44, 21 April 2018 (UTC)

A "Children's Wikipedia"?

I had this idea suddenly pop into my head. Would it be possible to create a version of Wikipedia targeted mainly at children? It could have very simple text, more images, and focus on subjects relevant to kids. And how would I go about setting it up? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Rilancia (talk)
