Display all copyright info from the EXIF of the uploaded file in the thumbfiles Multimedia and Commons In thumbnails, only the lines "author" and "copyright" from EXIF are shown. Copyright info form XMP and IPTC metadata are not shown, and other relevant info from EXIF is also not shown.
Integrate PageImages with Wikisource Wikisource Currently when searching for a book (or linking to a book on social media), only the default image shows up (on-wiki it is the OOUI article icon, on social media it is the wikimedia logo)
VisualEditor should use proper names for references Editing There should be proper names for references possible in the VisualEditor
Optional native language label language name Wikidata In the label box on Wikidata, all names are printed in Swedish, this bothers me a bit as I want to be able to read them in the native language instead, for example Deutsch instead of German, français instead of French, etc.

Sort pages with Chinese Japanese or Korean titles in a more useful order Search and Categories In category pages, pages with titles that begin with a kanji are currently sorted in Unicode order and grouped by the first character in the title. This is not a traditional way to sort and group things in CJK languages, and it’s not very helpful because Unicode order is opaque and does not correspond to anything in any CJK language.
Allow template wizard to substitute a template with a checkbox Editing After I use the template wizard with a template that I want to substitue rather than transclude, I have to manually add the subst: notation
Provide links to discussions that are stable after discussions get archieved Notifications, Watchlists and Talk Pages When a topic of a discussion on a discussion page gets archived the links to that discussion break.
Display the categories on the mobile site for everyone Mobile and apps The mobile site does not show categories to everyone. You need to enable advanced mode, which requires logging in.
Keep Chinese (zh) editors safe Larger suggestions Larger suggestions are not parsed due to length of problem summary, sorry!
Add "No keyword" as the default option in the Gerrit search dropdown list Miscellaneous If the last word you entered in the Gerrit search box is part of a Gerrit keyword (e.g., "merged"), you would be forced to manually modify the URL after hitting the "Enter" key, because a dropdown list with Gerrit keywords (ending with colons) would pop up.
Improve speed at which InternetArchiveBot archives links Larger suggestions Larger suggestions are not parsed due to length of problem summary, sorry!
Display definitions from Wikisource dictionaries Wiktionary Wiktionaries aims to offer for each meaning one definition but there are many ways to describe a meaning, many words - including local uses (i.e. an American-centered definition and an Indian-centered one for the same word) and very technical terms sometimes with more or less vulgarized explanations. A synthetic one is a solution, but more than one is better. Some alternative definitions from other dictionaries could be mentioned in the reference section but they are not accessible in Wiktionary and do not add any value to the entries.
Advanced sorting on Commons Multimedia and Commons We haven't any advanced sorting parameters on Commons.
Label "New Article" by default with transition to "Needs improvement" Translation Many translated articles are created as "stubs", and the editors creating them forgot to mark them to signal that work will still be carried out. This is problematic for the reviewing process: reviewers spend time on reviewing a version that is still in the works, and they may mark it for deletion.

Popup to link to or create a new Wikidata item after creating an article Wikidata The problem of connecting newly created articles to existing objects respectivley creating new objects for unconnected pages (when, how, by whom, ...) for hundreds of newly created articles per day in different language versions, and how to avoid duplicates amongst the currently 105 million objects, has been discussed for years again and again without a real solution, for example at d:Wikidata:Requests for permissions/Bot/RegularBot 2
Support for non-Gregorian and non-Julian calendar models on Wikidata Wikidata Wikidata does not support calender models other than Gregorian and Julian, but there are a vast amount of data described in other calender models like Hijri, Hebrew, Bengali etc., which don't get incorporated into Wikidata.
Vote and statistic server Miscellaneous Non-existent easily and quickly available voter statistics on vote.wikimedia.org
Exchange rate template Editing Sometimes we're going to write a story, and I really want one, and I type in the original local currency, and like other financial sites, they can actually convert that local currency for me, in real time, into my local currency, and present it in parentheses.
Make MediaViewer actually show all authors, instead of just the first one Multimedia and Commons Media Viewer cannot handle attributions properly, and can, in relatively simple and common circumstances, only show one of several authors of an image. This can lead to copyvio on the WMF's part.

Commons uses c:Template:Creator templates to make attributing authors easier. They'll provide a Wikidata link, and provide the birth and death years of the author. The problem triggers in any situation where there's multiple authors and at least one has a "Creator" template, which is not particularly uncommon. Media Viewer searches for the first creator template, and strips all other text. It can't even gracefully handle situations with multiple "Creator" templates: It will only return the first, and ignores the rest. However, ironically, if no creator templates are used, it's perfectly capable of just returning the entire Author/Artist field.

This seems to be treated as an edge case, but it really isn't. Lithographs can easily have three main authors (c:File:Edward Duncan - The Explosion of the United States Steam Frigate Missouri - Original.tiff, and collaborative works aren't that rare, say, c:File:Humanité René Philastre and Charles-Antoine Cambon - Set design for the second part of Victor Hugo's Les Burgraves, première production - Original.jpg. One could also easily get this situation in a photograph of a sculpture or any other 3D work, any collage, etc.

While the WMF can say (and has said) that the file description page is the only true place for someone to get file info, I've seen sites link back to a MediaViewer on a Wikipedia page as their source (Cracked magazine used to do that a lot, for instance). Given a CC-licensed image with more than one author, Media Viewer's failure could either set our reusers up for a lawsuit, or set the WMF up for one.

Quite frankly, after 9 years of being aware of this (see Phabricator bug report), it feels like a basic attribution bug in what's being used as a key software component should have been fixed long ago.

Dark mode Reading
Vector 2022 is live and both readers and editors alike are ready for a true dark/night mode, like the one already supported in the native iOS/Android apps, and joining the most popular websites, web browsers, and operating systems that offer built-in support without hacks or workarounds.

Quickly add favorite and related templates Editing It can be very difficult to find a template if you don't exactly remember its name
Different alphabetical sortings according to languages Wiktionary For the time being, there is only one alphabetical order for a given writing system (used in Indexes, Categories, etc), even though alphabetical order can vary depending on a language. For example, in German o and ö are treated as one letter, but in Turkish first comes o and only then ö. Therefore the order: offensiv – öffentlich – offiziell – Offizier – öffnen – Öffnung – oft – öfter – oh is absolutely fine for German, but in Turkish: ocak – oda – ödemek – odun – ödünç – oğlan – öğle – öğrenci – oğul is completely wrong (it should be: ocak – oda – odun – oğlan – oğul – … – ödemek – ödünç – öğle – öğrenci), yet it is the only order that is found in all automatically prepared alphabetical lists. This way all Wiktionaries make fools of themselves, showing that they do not even know the correct alphabetical order. This problem affects each and every Wiktionary.

Show syntax highlighting on View Source/protected pages Miscellaneous When I go to template pages that I am not allowed to edit and can only see the source, the source text has no syntax highlighting and is hard to understand.
Update Vega to the latest build Multimedia and Commons MediaWiki currently uses an older version of the Graph rendering library Vega (our build released seven years ago) that has issues with accessibility, syntax, functionality, and security. To work with it, you have to resurrect outdated manuals - this, in turn, prevents users from creating cool new graphics.
New users should see the deletion log when visiting a deleted page on English Wikipedia New contributors The issue is that the extension relocates the user to the new article landing page, so MediaWiki does not show the deletion log as usual because the user is actually viewing a different page.
Update TemplateStyles CSS rules to current CSS spec versions Miscellaneous Therefore, when using these new properties and values, you will get the error "Unrecognized or unsupported property" and will not be able to save them.
More functionality for the talk-page reply gadget Editing Nonetheless I have found two ways in which it could bear improvement:** Yet in order to do that with this gadget, it is necessary to go back in and edit the result manually after saving ... if you type in the three or five tildes, the result is added in addition to your signature.** (Though I could see this non-feature's utility in keeping people from writing hostile, insulting edit summaries, I think it's better that we let people by default write edit summaries; were we to add this feature it wouldn't be too hard to make it something that could be turned off for those who use it abusively).
Moving page preview window Reading Page preview windows are sometimes uncomfortable. A example is when you want to take a quick look over a list of links, let's say, a category page. While your common method of looking over the list is to move the cursor upward or downward, the page preview may cover the later links you have to check, so you need to move your cursor off the link where the preview popped up to make it dissapear and continue normally.
Make Navigation Popups & Page Previews work cross-wiki Bots and gadgets Page Previews and Navigation Popups are great, but they both only work for links on the local wiki.
Allow access to SDC from other wikis Multimedia and Commons It is not possible to access Structured Data on Commons data via Lua modules and parser functions from other wikis

Limit which namespaces are allowed in a category on the category page itself Search and Categories In order to avoid unwanted pages from polluting categories intended for certain namespaces, we waste our time and effort manually removing or commenting out [[Category:...]] and coding templates to prevent unwanted pages from being added to categories.
Content translation: Editing content in wiki syntax Translation In the Content translation tool, It is not possible to edit some page content in the wiki code. Editing in wiki code can be faster and more comfortable, e.g. when filling/copying some sample call of some template.
Allow going beyond the first page on RecentChanges/Watchlist ("older n") Notifications, Watchlists and Talk Pages While you can increase the number of results on recent changes and the watchlist to see older changes, this results in slower page load and you have to scroll past the new ones.
Inline diffs and inline patrol Admins and patrollers Unpatrolled changes are marked with a single ! in Recent changes, but not on Page histories and User contributions.
Add preference to open links in a new window or tab Reading Opening a link
Make the AbuseFilter edit window resizable and larger by default Anti-harassment AbuseFilters are a powerful tool to fight some cases of harassment. But the window used to edit AbuseFilters is ridiculously small. As a consequence, it's a chore to work on AbuseFilters, especially when working often on it.
Deploy Skin:Citizen to Wikimedia wikis Reading Currently skins of Wikimedia wikis don't support responsive layout, dark mode and font size adjusting. We need a modern skin in Wikimedia wikis.
Nested templates in Visual Editor Editing In Visual Editor, a template within another template cannot be edited properly. Not only does the user get wikitext (which should not happen in Visual Editor), but it is also confined to a tiny field in the template editor window. Whenever the main part of a template has to be inside another template for technical reasons, this makes the template editor and TemplateData for that template useless.
"Preview page with this template" should only accept/suggest pages that transclude the template Editing I've used the "Preview page with this template" many times and wondered why my changes weren't being applied, only to realize e.g. I was editing the sandbox and the page was using the live version.
Native SVG support Multimedia and Commons SVG files are currently rendered out as PNG files on pages that use the image.
Community-level notifications Notifications, Watchlists and Talk Pages Communities are thriving: they organize contests, they open large discussions, they gather and much more. These events are often gathered on a dedicated page for events that target the whole wiki, and at WikiProject pages for more specific events. Some other solutions are available; such as Watchlist notifications, or on-wiki newsletters; when a big project has to be announced, banners can be displayed.

However, the vast majority of users don't get the information: check on community consultations, where the ratio of active users versus participating users is pretty low.

Communication could be improved, using Echo notifications.

Voluntary pending changes Editing On enwiki, we have a months-long backlog of COI edit requests. I don't really look at them anymore, because (of those that would be acceptable) many of them are frustratingly vague but not quite decline-worthy, many of them are incredibly long multi-part requests, and for the rest the process is frustratingly manual: copy the proposed text, go find the place in the article where it should be, make the edit, go copy the requester's username, write an edit summary attributing it to them, save, go back to the talk page, and mark the request as done (for which you can't even use the reply button because you need to also flip the 'answered' bit in the original request template). Many requests are declined with the {{ECOI|xy}} template ("Not done for now: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format.").:I've dealt with a few COI editors who noticed how big this backlog was and were hesitant to submit totally reasonable changes. I assume some large percentage of them are fully discouraged, and either don't submit their request or just disregard the policy and edit the page anyway.
Instant linking to other articles while reading Reading I know that in the vast majority of articles, some terms haven't a link because they've been mentioned before, so it wouldn't be necessary to link them again. However, trying to find in the article where's the term which is linked can borrow you time -what's more, you could be searching for a link that doesn't exist. In the last case, you have to spend more time editing the page, and adding those links (you can search it on the search box after all, but anyway).

Add ability to share QR code for a page in any Wikimedia project Mobile and apps QRpedia.org has existed for many years, but it doesn't (seem to) suport anything other than "[xx].wikipedia.org" domain. So we can't make QR codes for Commons, Wiktionary, Wikisource, Wikibooks, Species, Incubator, etc. CMIIW but there's no documentation and unclear who's the maintainer
Allow category in EXIF data Multimedia and Commons Using "[[Category:Exif model: $1]]" as value for "MediaWiki:Exif-model-value". This currently adds the category to the file description page, but the file doesn't get categorized in the category. If the file description page already contains an identical category, the category is displayed twice.
Add LUA function to read out previous section heading Wiktionary Ca 99% of templates in wiktionary need a language code. The same code must be fed separately into every single template. This is junk work, and brings risk of wrong codes. Also, templates intended to be invoked from certain sections only cannot check whether they are used correctly.
Make Special:Search on Commons show all requested thumbnails Multimedia and Commons Special Search on Commons does not show all thumbs (example).
More languages for editing label Wikidata When editing a label, only a few preselected languages appear. Finding how to choose these available languages in a pain (I found it once somewhere in the options, but I could not find it anymore).
Edit-war-detecting bot or bots Bots and gadgets Admins trying to calm down edit wars are limited to those they know about, those reported to AN/I, AIV, ANEW or RFPP. Others happen where the participants do not know to report or do not care ... I recall reading about one such EW that was discovered years ago by a similar technology to what I am proposing in which two users who edited only one article had been reverting each other up to 20 times a day on that article. Certainly there have to have been or be other situations like that.
Provide example code for adding depict statements with a command line script Multimedia and Commons Structured Data on Commons will only become useful if many files have good depictions
Allow abuse filters to be hidden to only oversighters Anti-harassment Often, the best way to prevent mass-doxxing of users is by an abuse filter. However, filtering doxxing attempts will usually involve including private information in the filter rules. The abuse log will also contain the private information that the abuse filter is preventing from disclosure, which a human oversighter will have to manually suppress. The existing private filter status is insufficient because it still allows administrators and other editors to view personal information which should be restricted.

Communicate local and global announcements through notifications rather than banners Notifications, Watchlists and Talk Pages Global and local announcements are frequent, intrusive, sometimes irrelevant to the reader, and cause layout shifts.
Allow Thumbor to generate images at higher DPI Wikisource Currently Thumbor generates images at a fixed DPI which can cause blurry and artifacted images at higher image sizes such as the ones used by Openseadragon.
Checksums of files at dumps.wikimedia.org Miscellaneous Some files on dumps.wikimedia.org do not have checksums.
Possibility of thanking for more subsequent edits Miscellaneous Somebody made subsequent edits in a single article in a short period of time. I see them in my watchlist and I can add "thanks" for a single edit. But when I open the diff (example), I must first go to history, select one of edits and thank for single edit only.
Add user-profile previews to page previews Miscellaneous It can be difficult to get a quick insight to who an editor is and access the information relevant to them.
Enable 180°-360° metadata detection and embed/navigate capabilities in Commons/MediaViewer Multimedia and Commons When uploading, Commons can't detect metadata appropriately for the 180°–360° JPEG photos. That’s why we're getting fewer educational 180°-360° panoramas on Commons and fewer Facebook 360°-like photos in articles.
Wikipedia API: Output also in text or in TSV format Miscellaneous The output of the API is not in a simple format like plain text, but in JSON or HTML, where it is e.g. appropriate or requested (user request or according to API usage statistics).
Allow checkusers to use XFF variable in Abusefilters Anti-harassment Local management through AbuseFilter is a must-have.
Change information about the number of watchers on a page Notifications, Watchlists and Talk Pages When accessing Wikipedia: Tools > Page information, the "number of page watchers" contains data that represents a large number of inactive users, that is, who no longer edit on Wikipedia. In addition, "Number of watchers who visited recent edits" it does not define the period that these users were active in the project. The idea would be to come up with a solution that reflects the number of watchers that are active on Wikipedia based on two changes.
Extend "Who Wrote That?" tool to more wikis Reading It is extremely cumbersome to find out who wrote a specific part of the article, get an overview of how the current content maps to the various authors etc. History search based tools like WikiBlame make it merely very cumbersome. Who Wrote That? is a tool that provides a decent experience, but it is only available at a select few large Wikipedias.
Button to mark a single change as read in the global watch list Notifications, Watchlists and Talk Pages In my global watchlist, I have entered Wikidata, and there it is often stated straight out what the change consists of in the description itself. In these cases, I find it redundant to have to click on the edit to mark it as read in the list. The number of Wikidata edits in my watchlist quickly becomes redundant and it's frustrating that I have to go through them manually or go through them all in one go and then hit "Mark as read" for all edits.
Fix security key (WebAuthn) support Miscellaneous MediaWiki's support for security keys (for example YubiKeys) via WebAuthn for two-factor authentication is, well, not very good. There are two main issues:** Security keys are tied to a single wiki. Combined with the broken cross-wiki auto-login mechanism this makes it annoying to log in.** It is only possible to add a single key to an account. Best practices for using security keys include having several keys with access in case a single key is damaged or lost.
Add block option to hide or suppress username from logs Admins and patrollers Usernames are always saved in the blocklog and other logs, some usernames should not be visible in the log. Logs must all be deleted individually.
Improve patrolling new uploads in Commons Multimedia and Commons Currently very few uploads in Commons get patrolled, Something along the lines between 4% to 10%.
Tool to copy images from archives to Commons with metadata Multimedia and Commons Many GLAM institutions make images available on their website which can be copies to Commons. These have to manually be download/uploaded one by one and metadata copied across.
Make Navigation Popups into an Advanced-mode of Page Previews Bots and gadgets Navigation Popups is the 3rd most popular gadget across Wikimedia. But it's not globally accessible, the code is badly outdated, the volunteer developers want help, and it has vast untapped potential.
Search bar at preferences Miscellaneous Too many preferences, no way to easily search through them
Automate WikiProject weekly collaborations Bots and gadgets Collaborations such as the historical WikiProject collaborations of the week are a proven effective wiki-based tool for improving vital articles, but they are hard to maintain in the long-term, requiring a dedicated volunteer to manage them every week or month.

Prevent Flickr2Commons from uploading duplicate files Multimedia and Commons Flickr2Commons is the main source of duplicate files.
Highlight edits that are likely to have problems on page history Notifications, Watchlists and Talk Pages I cannot see what bad edits have been made to a page on its history page or the degree of how bad edits are ("likely to have problems", "very likely to have problems", the different colors) like you can see with changes on your Watchlist.
Structured user pages Larger suggestions Larger suggestions are not parsed due to length of problem summary, sorry!
Watchlist edit - "check all" checkbox Notifications, Watchlists and Talk Pages When removing pages from Special:EditWatchlist you must manually check every page, even if you want to remove all (or almost).
Create a button to expand all collapsible elements on a page Reading Some pages have many collapsible elements, for example Bulgaria women's national football team results, and it can be very tedious clicking "show" for each of those elements.
Discussion pages should not use HTML lists Notifications, Watchlists and Talk Pages Due to an accident of history, we have used HTML lists for discussions, including using : for indentation. Using : for indentation is an accessibility problem for users as it indicates a definition list, yet it is used to indicate a reply.
Add a new content model for member lists Miscellaneous When users join a user group, a WikiProject, etc., they usually sign on a particular page or section. However, users can be renamed. And after the renaming, the signatures on various pages won't change automatically. It can lead to trouble when trying to find a particular user on a list, especially after the renaming didn't leave a redirect behind.
Some transcluded templates include the page in unnecessary categories Search and Categories Let's say that template Foo is transcluded in the page Lorem Ipsum. The template Foo automatically includes the page Lorem Ipsum into the category Examples, but the page Lorem Ipsum should not be placed in the Examples category.
Fix unified login to Wikidata and Commons Larger suggestions Larger suggestions are not parsed due to length of problem summary, sorry!
Visual Editor should automatically map templates when pasting content form other languages Translation When translating a page form one language to another using the visual editor, it is possible to copy (and then adapt) the text. The problem with this is that the text is copied as is, including the templates, which might be references. Since templates are different from wiki to wiki, the user may need to find the equivalent template and adjust the contents based on the target template name and their parameters. There should be an easy way to copy a bare reference from source language to target language.
Custom edit summaries per user Editing Reuse of high quality edit summaries is difficult because there is no way to select them again at a later date or to use them across devices. In some cases, the browser shows recent edit summaries but older edit summaries tend to disappear after a while so they have to be written again.
A better way to show differences on Wikidata Wikidata When I review changes on Wikidata, all changes appear as exactly the same. In addition, rank ends up on its own line "between" all other edits, which quickly becomes misleading because it looks like many more lines have been changed than it actually has.
Photo and video requests to be fullfilled by Wikipedians all around the world Miscellaneous Sometimes you write an article about a subject far away from where you live and there are no copyright free photos or videos available.
Layering/timing of blocks Admins and patrollers Twofold:** The introduction of partial blocks was long overdue. However, admins are still limited to one or the other. When a user has, say, edit-warred on an article but contributes constructively elsewhere, we can either block sitewide for a short time or partial block for a long time. Both options present a tradeoff. The shorter sitewide block may seem unfair to the blocked user since it was only one article, and for other editors on the page it is entirely possible that once the block expires the blocked user just goes back to the edit warring because, y'know, they were right. But a longer partial block may seem too lenient if the edit warring on the one article was particularly egregious (i.e., one or two reverts a day, incivil edit summaries, etc.).** I was asked a while back by a user to block sitewide a range that was already under long-term partial block on several other articles; they may have been at the limit. I had to decline since changing to a sitewide block would completely wipe out the partial block ... i.e., once the sitewide block expired the range would be free.
DabFix Bots and gadgets The DabFix tool for rapidly populating disambiguation pages is no longer available.
Kiwik template - Ping projects/limited workflow Notifications, Watchlists and Talk Pages  ** Editors get overloaded with communication as all messages/watchlist are addressed to individuals, when some messages would be better directed towards another article talk or a project** Many workflows involve manualy updating a second page. kiwik would be the first step towards a simple workflow** wiki is great for discussing an issue, but not necessarily great at providing a synopsis, or linking multiple conversations.** Userboxes can not be used to ask for expertise due to concerns abut spam
Insert attestation using Wikisource as a corpus Wiktionary Now, the reference of the sentence had to be copy/paste by hand and it's a long and unfunny way to contribute, the result being few quotation from Wikisources (less than 3 % for French Wiktionary).
Make Commonist work again Multimedia and Commons Commonist does't work.
Support copying references to other languages with the correct format Translation The field tags and their order of placement in a citation vary from language to language
Allow each wiki and each translatable article to have more than one source language Translation Now the system claims that the Chinese page “is a translation”, which is a false claim. The system is mis-stating the facts, and translators wouldn’t know parts of the English “source” page are in fact not authoritative.
Wikibreak/OoO notification autoresponder Notifications, Watchlists and Talk Pages I get pings or email messages from people trying to inform me about things, or trying to ask me without going to my user page and/or my talk page. Sometimes, they ping/message me when I'm on a break (which they aren't necessarily aware of). They get frustrated when I'm not reacting.
Something like Extension:Variables to simplify template calls Wiktionary Some templates used on Polish Wiktionary (e.g., wikt:pl:Szablon:imię, wikt:pl:Szablon:imię odojcowskie, wikt:pl:Szablon:forma rzeczownika, wikt:pl:Szablon:forma przymiotnika) put entries into laguage-dependent categories. To do that they need to know what language the entry is about. As many dictionary entries are stored in a single article (one section per one language), those templates cannot determine the language with the standard MW tools. Thus, the language needs to be provided in the template call (like {{imię odojcowskie|ukraiński|Абаку́м|m}} or {{forma rzeczownika|pl}})*: This could be done with the Variables extension, but it is unavailable on Wikimedia and the description page of the extension says that it “[…] is incompatible with plans to parallelize the parsing, as is intended by the use of Parsoid. Therefore, the future of this extension is uncertain, and it is expected to become incompatible with the standard MediaWiki parser within a few years.”
Improve PagePile or create new tool for article lists for communication metrics Miscellaneous Wikipedia lacks communication industry analytics, which is major barrier to organizational partnerships. Tools such as Magnus Manske's PagePile that allow creating arbitrary article lists which can then be fed into analytics tools such as Massviews, but there are limitations.
Attribution repair mechanism Admins and patrollers In Russian Wikipedia I've found that most translations made before translation tool introduction doesn't have enough attribution in their edit summaries (or doesn't have it at all), because local rules allowed talk page template instead of attribution in edit history. There is no technical mechanism for attribution repair in the Wikipedia. Dummy edits are not official repair mechanism but are the only way to mark an edit as translation in edits history. Dummy edits are useless in long histories because search for added text won't show dummy edits near real edits without attribution in their summaries. Also they might vary in form and format. If somebody want to find out the source of the edit without attribution he will find added text and might try to add dummy edit. If another user already fixed attribution, duplicates may appear.
Allow citations to be edited in the references section with VisualEditor Citations In VisualEditor, it is not possible to directly change the text of citations at the end of the article. Instead each citation in the article body must be clicked and edited individually. This makes the whole process very tedious and more complicated than it needs to be.
Ease the creation of diagrams Multimedia and Commons Create a diagram in Wikipedia is tedious. You have to basically create an SVG file. It makes updates on the diagrams difficult. SVG code is quite verbose.
Ability to reorder statements Wikidata A user that wants to fix the order has to delete and recreate the statement which is undesirable. While external data users can configure their scripts to use a property like "point in time" to order the statements, users within Wikidata have no way to order them.
IIIF support Wikisource Currently Commons does not have a mechanism to provide high-quality image support, and while there are high quality IIIF sources available there are concerns over user data privacy and loading of third-party content that limit the adoption of these sources.
Add notice to Visual Editor that unsourced edits may be reverted New contributors There is no notice in the Visual Editor that unsourced edits will be reverted. Users who use the Visual Editor are likely to then publish edits that are then reverted because they were unaware that adding a source was required.
Such a notice is already present in the Wikitext editor ("Content that violates any copyrights will be deleted. Encyclopedic content must be verifiable through citations to reliable sources.")
Stop-time blocks Admins and patrollers Blocks are currently all running time ... they are set, and run the designated time, at the end of which they expire.

This does not always deter vandals/disruptors blocked for the first or sometimes second time, as they can simply wait out the block, then come back and start right up again, perhaps getting away with more this next time. Eventually we have to block for longer amounts of time, which isn't fair, really, to other people on those IPs who might want to edit constructively or create accounts. Especially on ranges.

Remember OCR column/region profiles Wikisource Currently, using OCR to extract text from books is bad at detecting irregular features such as notes and columns (see OCR output for wikisource:Page:Login_USENIX_Newsletter_feb1983.djvu/2, and the same page in the OCR tool where rectangular regions can be selected).
Add watchers variable to AbuseFilter Anti-harassment Some pages are not well-watched. It can lead to unwanted vandalism for a long time (in particular the Template and Module namespaces). Being able to tag some actions on these pages could help prevent vandalism.
Fix CropTool Multimedia and Commons Lossless cropping of images using the CropTool does not work. Crop of TIFF, GIF, and PDF files does not work, and files with high resolution can only be rotated by 90, 180, or 270 degrees.

A warning popup when adding a DAB cat while using HotCat Multimedia and Commons If you try to add a Disambiguation category (DAB category) to a file or category using HotCat, you cannot see that it is a DAB category. It is undesirable to have files and/or categories in DAB categories. So a lot of DAB categories have files and/or subcategories, see Category:Non-empty disambiguation categories (not only due to HotCat). This problem has been discussed on Commons:Village pump#How to make a structural solution for not empty disambigious pages?, issue 2, and on MediaWiki talk:Gadget-HotCat.js#Could a warning popup appear when adding a DAB cat while using HotCat?.
Allow user to pin/unpin specific languages Reading It can be difficult to quickly find languages relevant to you from the list of language versions. The Compact Language Links feature is supposed to solve this, but ironically it makes it even more difficult so I've disabled it globally. Currently, there are three ways for a user to make specific languages appear in the abbreviated list. All have serious problems:** One way is to configure your browser's language preferences. But more often than not, the reason you want to see a page in a certain language isn't necessarily that you comprehend that language; it just means you suspect that language version might have information you're seeking that can be extracted even if you're not fluent in it. Not only that, just because you want to visit certain language versions of WMF projects doesn't mean you want to read other sites in those languages, let alone tell every website you visit that you understand them, which has serious privacy concerns because it enables them to fingerprint you more easily.** Another is to list languages in a Babel box on your user page. This has similar problems: The reason you want to read certain language versions isn't necessarily that you understand them, and you have to publicly state your language skills, which is a potential privacy issue.** The other is to select a language from the list, which makes it appear in the compact list. But just because you wanted to read one article in a language doesn't mean you might want to read all other articles in that language. The inability to remove languages from the compact list renders it useless.
Display the metadata of video files in the metadata section of the file description Multimedia and Commons MediaWiki shows only the video and audio encoder version in the metadata section of the file descption page and removes all metadata from transcoded video files.

Allow checkusers to use user-agent variables in Abusefilters Anti-harassment With AbuseFilters, there are several ways to target long-term abusers and harassers, including IP adresses, but we lack one which could be powerful: user agent (UA).
Translatable language names Translation Many language names do not have translations in MediaWiki. Wikidata, Commons structured data and the {{#language:...}} syntax often fall back to English instead. Translations cannot be easily added.
Avoid editing conflicts Editing Conflicting edits are confusing when 2 or more users are editing the article at the same time.

Mitigate the damage caused by proxy blocks Anti-harassment 2) Wikipedia users in oppressive countries often need to use IP hiding services (Tor, open proxies, VPN etc) to remain safe, but these services share the same IP addresses between their users and can be weaponized by vandals, which means they tend to be blocked preemptively.*: The same can be said about mobile users as well to some extent: patterns of IP reuse are increasingly more common (see e.g. iCloud and T-Mobile), but because mobile use among developed-country power users and admins is low, the blocking practices that emerged are disruptive for mobile users.*: More information on the topic can be found on Talk:No open proxies/Unfair blocking and Diff's series of posts on the topic: [1], [2], [3]
Allow viewing of edit filter logs for IP ranges Admins and patrollers Administrators doing anti-vandal work on (at least) the English Wikipedia are increasingly blocking the /64 range when faced with vandalism from IPv6 addresses, reflecting the practice of many ISPs of assigning those ranges to a single user, as long as it can be found that this is the case for the /64 range in question. But while it is also common to review edit filter logs for an IP address in the course of assessing the severity of the vandalism or disruption (most importantly, whether the user has been warned by the filter that they are risking a block should they continue), the filter logs can only be reviewed for a single IP at a time. This makes it difficult to determine whether a /64 rangeblock, or even any block, would be warranted for a particular vandal for whom only the edit filter logs are available
Return to the article when closing the MediaViewer Reading If you visit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stadsschouwburg#/media/File:Stadsschouwburg,_Amsterdam_2333.jpg (by pasting into a new incognito tab) and click "X", you are not returned article. Instead, the tab is closed (or the empty-tab view is shown).
Minimize Wikimedia/Wikipedia's risk by enforcing 2FA on 'Mandatory Use User' groups Anti-harassment Even though we know, It's extremely important for administrators and editors with advanced permissions to keep their accounts secure, Not everyone in the Mandatory use user groups & SSH key Wikitech users had been enabled 2FA security in their account. If any of these accounts are compromised, it could cause widespread disruption and vandalism in Wikimedia/Wikipedia.
Add "Sorting order by alphabet" in Special:Search Search and Categories If you use Advanced search (example) you can choose between the three following sorting orders: *# "Relevance"*# "Edit date - current on top"*# "Creation date - current on top":Or if you are skilled enough you can use </tvar > some more, but no "Sorting order by alphabet"

Adding statements on mobile devices Wikidata On mobile devices it's only possible to add and edit interwikilinks, labels, descriptions and alias. But it's not possible to edit or add statements.
Cookie block exception option for hard IP blocks Admins and patrollers "When an IP address is blocked with the option to include logged-in users (e.g. hardblocked), the block includes a cookie block." Once a user hits this kind of block (e.g. using a VPN), they still get the block message for the blocked IP even if they turn off the VPN. This confuses good faith users who happen to accidentally hit open proxy blocks.
Auto-merging the identical references in HTML output Citations Identical references used more than once on the page are not merged in the output, and thus in a certain way reduce the comfort of the listing in the References section.
Create a private sandbox page for a Wikipedia user Editing Currently, every user has a sandox (Special:MyPage/sandbox) when creating an account from Wikipedia. However, when you edit it, it appears in the user's contributed list (Special:Contributions). This is a problem for users working on featured articles, as some users may steal content from those issues, pasting all of that person's work into this article before the project is ready.
Prompt for page number(s) for compatible cite sources (e.g. book, journal) Citations People often forget to add page numbers, making it more time-consuming to verify information for readers and editors.
Utility to attach acccount to all wikis Admins and patrollers There are over 800 WMF wiki's that cross-project contributors may use. Users may autocreate accounts on projects by visiting, however it only occurs by logging in to the project.

Notifications for user page edits Anti-harassment If your user page is modified by a malicious user, you may not notice if your watchlist is overflowed. Unlike a normal article, it is very unlikely that another user will revert or warn about the malicious changes for you. Unlike article vandalism, user page vandalism can affect the unwitting user's standing in the community.
Add the number of items (search results) in "What links here" Multimedia and Commons If you want to know, which pages / items link to a specific page, you can click on "What links here" in the left column under Tools, example. But you can't see the number of items which links until you click on "500 search results per page" or sometimes you need "5000" to see the line: "Displayed 1,846 items."
Links for preferences Miscellaneous We have links for preference tabs. We don't have links for individual preferences in those tabs.
Auto-save feature Editing When making larger edits, and in particular writing new articles, there is a possibility of data loss (possibly a few hours worth) due to:** a power outage,** a browser crash,** a network outage (if one chooses to preview their changes while network is temporarily offline),** accidental browser closure.:It is a fairly standard feature in modern software to auto-save user edits to guard against such incidents. Auto-saving is ubiquitous in cloud-based software, where it has the added (or perhaps main) benefit of allowing the user not to think about saving their work/to carry on working on the same document in multiple sittings/across multiple devices. (This would arguably be desirable to have on Wiki in its own right.) "Offline" software also often has an auto-save feature, though generally for crash recovery only (e.g. LibreOffice).:The code editor does not currently provide any kind of auto-save functionality, while the Visual Editor appears to have some sort of auto-save implemented, or so I gather based on phab:T57370 (I do not normally use Visual Editor, so cannot tell whether it is indeed present; if it is, then it appears to be both undocumented and hidden, with no indication in the UI that anything is being saved - so almost as good as if it wasn't there at all).:Some workarounds that users, especially those who have experienced data loss in the past, are likely to employ include::* periodically copying their work from the Wiki editor to an external program (e.g. Notepad) and saving it locally;:* writing whole articles in an external program and only copying them into a Wiki editor once ready;:* writing their article in their sandbox and saving regularly.:Each of these is inconvenient/time-consuming/decreases productivity.
Easily add page numbers with "cite" automatic button for books and then easily "reuse" listed book references with/without new page number(s) if needed. Editing Adding book references is more difficult than adding press articles with an url in Wikipedia's articles with the "cite" button.
Collaborative editing Editing There is no problem at the moment, but this is an idea. See below.
Sort label box by language name on Wikidata Wikidata The label box is now sorted by Wikimedia's internal language code which usually, but not necessarily, follows ISO 639 codes. This is not shown to the users so the list appears quite arbitrary to those who do not know the logic behind why languages are where they are.
Scientific papers: Sort authors by their own rank Wikidata Sometimes the article is created with only authors with the property P2093 (only text without link), then some of them (all at the end...) are transfered to the property P50 (link to the good author page) but the authors are showned in the order of their addition to the page not to their own rank (P1545). It will be better, especially when there is a lot of authors, to have a sorting by this property. See for example this page with 14 authors currently showned as 2; 7; 1; 3; 5; 6; 9; 10; 11; 12; 13; 14 - and the last ones on the right order because I added by. [Sorry for my poor english!]
Can a deletion request for a category be as easy as for a file? Multimedia and Commons Not only you need to nominate the category for deletion, but you also have to (1) Manually create a subpage of deletion request, (2) Manually add the newly created subpage to Commons:Deletion requests/JJJJ/MM/DD and (3) Manually notify the uploader on his/her talk page. While these extra steps are automatically implemented when you nominate a file for deletion.
Allow grouping of blocks and protections Admins and patrollers Sometimes vandals/disruptors will be hitting a group of related articles (like, one about an upcoming election, then candidates and parties involved in that election). Likewise blocked vandals/disruptors often go to other IPs to evade and sock, and it is common for admins to extend the block on the IP used originally if there was one.

To fully protect and block in these circumstances, it is necessary to enter the information for each protection/block separately.

Reduce Conflict - Change Revert workflow Anti-harassment Reverts can cause conflict and harassment, but this may be due system issues as well as editor behaviour. Causes of conflict to do wth reverts are are that discussions are not happening, or are happeing using comments on reverts rather than talk, or on user talk rather than article. Attacks on user pages has been linked to the loss of experience editors and harassment

Currently, the revert process is:*# An edit is done by the soon to be revertee.*# Watchlist is triggered, an editor reviews with the help of ORES*# The reverer reverts, and a revert triggers a notification to revertee.*# Revertee may be upset at speed of revert (perceived injustice may cause conflict) *# The revertee clicks on the notification, and they are sent to diff*# The difference screen::Issues with this are::* There is no clear call to action, and the screen is powerful but complicated (uncertainty is a cause of conflict).:* The diff screen has lots of coloured options/links, but most will cause conflict if done for the wrong reasons ([restore this version], [edit], and [Undo] etc). :* The diff UX accidentally personalises the revert ; the revertee editor (left) vs Revertor editor name(right), and the last coloured line (so most likely to be done if confused) links to the revertor's user page and user talk). :As an aside, code repositories sometimes use mine/theirs to remove bias.

Improve handling of dates in languages other than English Wikidata When editing, it does not understand "1997年2月1日" even when the interface is in Japanese. In Spanish, it can parse "11 mayo 1961" but not "11 de mayo de 1961". In German it can parse "1. März 2000" but not "1. märz 2000". It can parse "01.02.1997" if the language is Slovak, but not if the language is Czech.
Quickly add infobox Editing despite being optional, the infobox is a great summary tool. And there is a huge list due to the diversity of topics in the encyclopedia.
Disadvantages of '公共轉換組' in Wikipedia (Chinese Version) Search and Categories '公共轉換組' in Wikipedia allows people to transfer Chinese to fit different places' registers. But the page for 'Traditional Chinese' only shows wordings of Traditional Chinese in Taiwan, which does not consider the difference in wordings. And through search engines, this affects the search results that all are presented in the form of Taiwan register, leading to misleading problems.:

Allow client-side scripts to convert dates in the format used in MediaWiki interface Bots and gadgets But script developers have no access to the logic according to which these formats are produced (or even the difference between the user/site's time and UTC, which can vary with DST) and can't show dates in a way that is consistent with how the user sees the rest of the MediaWiki interface.
Display a notice on newly created articles Admins and patrollers For many wikipedians, Admins and Patrollers don't leave enough time to do some articles. Me for example, I create an article and 8 minutes later it was deleted.
Allow users to emphasise languages when looking up words. Wiktionary Sometimes a word is shown in many languages that do not interest a given user (much, at a given time). This applies both to the words shown on a page (both lemmas and translations) and to those in suggested in the various search boxes, and can result in inconvenience and confusion.
Prevent data duplication Wikidata The cases I consider are: duplications between labels and aliases in the same language; duplications of date-statements (due to different encode of the same date); duplications of references (two exactly identical references, or the two references identical except for a different retrieval date)
Enabling subscribe action for lower headers for specific pages (prefix) Notifications, Watchlists and Talk Pages Subscribe action only works for level 2 headers
Default collapse statements when they have many values Wikidata This was discussed on Wikidata four years ago, and resurfaced last fall (connected to a larger issue).
Add status messages to assembling and publishing stages of upload process Multimedia and Commons Upload to Commons consists of the three stages uploading, assembling and publishing. During the assembling and publishing stages (that can take minutes each) the server does not send progress reports to the upload tool (like upload wizard)
In Spam blacklist, allow sysops to enable blacklisting only on some namespaces Admins and patrollers Adding a website on Mediawiki:Spam-blacklist prohibits everyone from adding the website everywhere on the wiki. But this is not always relevant: in many cases, it's only needed to prevent the website addition on mainspace, and the technical prohibition to use the URL on talk pages complicates discussions.

Block history for individual IPs on ranges Admins and patrollers This is useful when evaluating whether a rangeblock against a vandal is desirable, what IPs the block needs (or doesn't need) to reach, and what blocks might be superseded if a rangeblock is imposed, a problem I've noted before.
Implement Extension:ProofreadPage functionality for Parsiod (aka native support of tag:pages to Parsoid) Wikisource Since the migration to Parsoid, rest_v1 api placed references at the end of each transcluded <pages ... /> section instead of in the <references/> tag location. It breaks WS-Export, which relies on this api. This causes works exported from the Wikisources to be generated incorrectly.

Option to filter bots from the block log Admins and patrollers In large Wikipedias, for example, in English [4] and Russian [5], proxies are blocked by several bots. This clutters the log very much, which does not allow you to somehow track what happens with locks in the project. It would be cool to be able to see the block log without being cluttered by bots.
Date filter in deleted contributions Search and Categories We can filter by date within a user's contributions, but there is no date selection feature when admins look at deleted contributions.
Enable a search by image in Commons Multimedia and Commons Sometimes, e.g. when you have a file in your computer but you don't know its original name, or even if it's a file from Commons, the search for it can be fatiguing, by trying to guess its title.

Linking of citing tool with Wikidata Citations the data for books and papers in the citing tool has to be introduced every single time the book is used. Editable gallery captions in Visual Editor Editing Galleries contribute significant information to articles and are a great way to illustrate the breadth of a topic. However, their captions are significantly more difficult to edit in the Visual Editor than those of individual images. Individual images' captions can be clicked and edited while still viewing the article. In contrast, gallery captions require the editor to double-click to pop up the gallery, navigate to the specific image, and add the caption, then Apply Changes and exit. This requires significantly more steps. The current process does not streamline the process and may alienate newer editors.
Support linking to lexemes in structured data on Commons Multimedia and Commons Commons has over 2.2 million pronunciation files but they cannot be linked to their corresponding lexemes in Wikidata because Commons does not support the lexeme, sense or form data types.

Show Wikimedias language code and language name in Wikidata label box Wikidata When using LabelLister or similar systems to add labels in new languages or want to find a specific language but don't want to go through 300+ languages, it can be useful to know by which language code the languages are sorted after all.
Ability for sorting Special:UnreviewedPages by time Admins and patrollers Special:UnreviewedPages (a central piece of functionality for Flagged Revisions, sort of the flagging-aware equivalent of Special:NewPages) lists newly created pages that need review, sorted alphabetically by title. This isn't super useful, typically you'd want to see either the most recently created ones (because you already checked the older ones earlier) or the oldest ones (which have been waiting for the longest time and are the bottom of the backlog).
Improve tracking of categorization changes Search and Categories Additionally, there has been some technical debt around displaying the categorization changes. For example, sometimes it's unnecessarily difficult to access the diff.
Enable removing block log entries entirely, not just redacting Admins and patrollers When an administrator perceives a wrong block and/or one considered incorrect by the local community, it is in the Block log history (Special:Log/block) of the user.
Support ASGI on Toolforge Bots and gadgets Toolforge does not provide support for Python ASGI (Asynchronous Server Gateway Interface). This prevents tool developers from using modern, more performant frameworks such as FastAPI.
Allow users to selectively disable code editor functions Editing The code editor currently tries to do too much, such as inserting an additional quote or bracket when you press a quote or bracket key, or delete an additional quote or bracket when you delete a quote or bracket. More often than not it guesses wrong and actually causes bugs by inserting things it shouldn’t have inserted and/or deleting things it shouldn’t have deleted. The coder would often stare at their code wondering why it doesn’t work before they realized it was the code editor that had corrupted their code.

Easier drag-and-drop uploading with licensing options Multimedia and Commons It's hard to upload images and provide the correct licensing information. A prime example is screenshots. They could be more frequently shared at techincal support venues like the English Wikipedia's Village Pump (technical), but many users don't because they either don't know how to upload images or are confused by the licensing.
