Blocking on Wikimedia[edit]

Dear 80686. I'm Theklan, sysop on basque wikipedia and devote wikipedian since 2006. I'm really ashamed about the decision to hold Wikimania on Haifa, Israel, where many arab country wikipedians and many other left-side activists can't enter. This is a real shame. I'm trying to express my concerns about this on Wikimania 2011 Desk, but I've been blocked because my political point of view is not accepted by the admins of that place. This is a double shame. I ask to unblock me now or I'll try to get an official boycott position from many other wikipedians and even some Wikipedia sections. -Theklan 18:20, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Just for the records, for anyone that might be interested what it is all about:

Link[edit]

Hi. For some reason my GUI still don't change to English with the link provided. LouriePieterse 15:00, 6 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well, we can change it to .com if you like. But the two links you provide both showed Google Maps in german for me (as I have a german locale). The language parameter is in the URL: hl=de for instance. I copied that by accident when I put the link there first, but removed the whole parameter later, so it should do auto-detection of the locale. --Manuel Schneider(bla) (+/-) 15:09, 6 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That is weird, because initially I also thought that the hl param would change it successfully. I tried today again, but only the .com one shows the English GUI. Maybe it is because I am not logged into Google or something like that. Thanks anyway. LouriePieterse 15:13, 6 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I have switched all the URLs to .com TLD, and they are still german for me. So if they are english for you, then everything should be fine ;-) BTW I am also not logged into Google, working right now on a plain system with a new user profile.
What I could imagine: If your system locale is not english but a language Google Maps does not support, that it is falling back to a language that corresponds to the TLD - so the fallback on .de is german?. --Manuel Schneider(bla) (+/-) 15:19, 6 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It works perfectly now, so it seems like everything is sorted! Maybe there is somewhere something wrong with the German Google. LouriePieterse 15:31, 6 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your help with the fundraiser[edit]

Manuel :) On behalf of WMF, I would like to thank you for your prompt help with reaching out for chapters representatives as well as your mediation with the Swiss chapter. Your help has had an effect on the efficiency of our last fundraiser. We thank you for helping out the movement in raising money this year, and I personally thank you for helping me make my job easier. Thanks Manuel, and I am looking forward to working with you on further chapters related issues. Best. --Melamrawy (WMF) 21:36, 8 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It was a pleasure to work with you! Working with these chapters and as such also being dependant from the fundraiser it is my responsibility to help wherever I can. --Manuel Schneider(bla) (+/-) 08:26, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCon banner request[edit]

Hey Manuel,

Asaf asked me to look in on your campaign request to help out. I'm going to set up the banner and campaign for the first set (looks like a call for submissions?) but had some questions about the request you had on the calendar. 2 weeks of anonymous and logged in is an awful lot (with over 30M page views a day etc.) especially when you're only looking for a small percentage of them. Would you be willing to dial that back a bit? I think you could do logged in for 2 weeks pretty easily it's the anonymous that concerns me. It's just that so many people seeing it when they don't really care and it trains them to ignore the banners more and more.

My guess is that for this first round (asking for submissions) the people most likely to do it are almost all editors or other logged in users. Would you be ok with just doing logged in for that and maybe a watch list notice on deWiki or something if you want a bit more visibility? For the registration banner in late July how about a full week of logged in and just a couple days (perhaps 1 or 2?) for anonymous? Jalexander (talk) 18:52, 4 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, looks like Tanvir got the banner :) I still think we should rethink the anonymous version now, 2 weeks of that is too much especially for the submissions one. Jalexander (talk) 18:54, 4 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Alex, thanks for contacting me. Jan Eissfeldt got a hold of Tanvir and asked him to do it, just after I sent the mail to Asaf. Obviously I wasn't quick enough informing Asaf that it has been taken care of.
Anyway, to come back to your request: Cutting back to two days for anonymous users is ok for me, I would like to have that on the edge of an weekend, to both benefit from work users as well as weekend users.
The banner's intent by the way is to advertise the german-speaking Wiki Conference which is being held in the middle of Europe, at the corner of Austria, Switzerland, Germany and Liechtenstein. Therefore we are focusing to all languages spoken in this are while the second banner focuses on users from this area in general by geolocation. I guess this mix makes the most of it without annoying the whole world with the banner. At least we already got a registration from a german-speaker in the US ;-)
Another focus is on free knowledge projects in general, therefore we have tried to reach out as much as possible to Wikimedia projects outside Wikipedia but also OpenStreetMap, Wiki Travel, Wikivoyage etc. We expect 220 participants and need more registrations - the earlier, the better. --Manuel Schneider(bla) (+/-) 19:11, 4 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I completly understand! I definitely want to make sure you get what you need with as little anoyance as possible to everyone involved. Since you want to get earlier registration do you want to run it anonymous at the end of this week (Friday/Saturday) even with the submission banner? Then we can see in a couple months where you stand to see what you need? I took it off anon for now per your thoughts to keep it for 2 days over weekday/weekend but am happy to add a calendar event for myself so that I turn it back on Friday UTC/Thursday afternoon my time. Jalexander (talk) 20:51, 4 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That's okay for me, thanks for taking care!
The banner says "The german-speaking Wikimedia community meets from August 31st to September 2nd in Dornbirn. Register now and submit a proposal until June 30th!", so it is both advertising registration and the call for submissions. --Manuel Schneider(bla) (+/-) 20:56, 4 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Did you ever attend Wikimania with your money? Talk to us![edit]

TL;DR: Fill a short Wikimania survey, it takes 5 min.

Hi, I'm writing you because you are listed in Wikimania/Frequent attendees. As you probably know by now, Wikimania 2016 Esino Lario wants to achieve a Wikimania format which allows people to "get things done" and leave the conference fully satisfied with the result of their investment of time and other resources (see pillars 2 and 4: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2016_bids/Esino_Lario/Pillars ). For this purpose, we consider all audiences (see https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2016_bids/Esino_Lario/Program#Target ).

Participants other than scholarship recipients and reimbursed representatives are one group we heard very little from, but we think they are important because: 1) they have financial resources and help make the Wikimania budget sustainable; 2) they have motivation to share and ideas on what makes Wikimania valuable.

We set up a form mainly to collect names of some such people and talk with them later: if you provide your contact, we may write you on this topic. We may release aggregate data from the resposes; data will be handled by us and the Wikimania 2016 fiscal sponsor "Ecomuseo delle Grigne" (under EU law). Please fill the whole form, it's short!

Feel free to forward this invite to anyone.

Thanks,

This is a message from the Wikimedia Foundation. Translations are available.

As you may know, the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees approved a new "Access to nonpublic information policy" on 25 April 2014 after a community consultation. The former policy has remained in place until the new policy could be implemented. That implementation work is now being done, and we are beginning the transition to the new policy.

An important part of that transition is helping volunteers like you sign the required confidentiality agreement. All Wikimedia volunteers with access to nonpublic information are required to sign this new agreement, and we have prepared some documentation to help you do so.

The Wikimedia Foundation is requiring that OTRS volunteers sign the new confidentiality agreement by 31 December 2015 to retain their access. You are receiving this email because you have been identified as an OTRS volunteer and are required to sign the confidentiality agreement under the new policy. If you do not sign the new confidentiality agreement by 31 December 2015, you will lose your OTRS access. OTRS volunteers have a specific agreement available, if you have recently signed the general confidentiality agreement for another role (such as CheckUser or Oversight), you do not need to sign the general agreement again, but you will still need to sign the OTRS agreement.

Signing the confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information is conducted and tracked using Legalpad on Phabricator. We have prepared a guide on Meta-Wiki to help you create your Phabricator account and sign the new agreement: Confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information/How to sign

If you have any questions or experience any problems while signing the new agreement, please visit this talk page or email me (gvarnum(_AT_)wikimedia.org). Again, please sign this confidentiality agreement by 31 December 2015 to retain your OTRS access. If you do not wish to retain this access, please let me know and we will forward your request to the appropriate individuals.

Thank you,
Gregory Varnum (User:GVarnum-WMF), Wikimedia Foundation

Inspire Campaign on content curation & review[edit]

I've recently launched an Inspire Campaign to encourage new ideas focusing on content review and curation in Wikimedia projects. Wikimedia volunteers collaboratively manage vast repositories of knowledge, and we’re looking for your ideas about how to manage that knowledge to make it more meaningful and accessible. We invite you to participate and submit ideas, so please get involved today! The campaign runs until March 28th.

All proposals are welcome - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is welcome - your skills and experience can help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign to improve review and curation tasks so that we can make our content more meaningful and accessible! I JethroBT (WMF) 05:38, 29 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Frage bezüglich OTSR (freigabe eines Bildes)[edit]

Hallo 80686

Grüsse, --Manuel Schneider (talk) 13:35, 11 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Request for Input - New Central Notice request process[edit]

Hello fellow CN admin!

Back in February I emailed the CN-admin list regarding part of my role to look into the Central Notice process and see where we could make improvements including: the campaign process; its functionality or lack thereof; and fundamentally the documentation that supports it. You can see many of the issues that I identified at CentralNotice/Process_Review. If there is anything additional that you feel has been left out then please feel free to leave any comments on the talk page.

My first task is to improve the requesting of campaigns by communities and affiliates. I am looking to set up a more formal request process, similar to those used in many projects. The aim is to: increase the transparency of Central Notice; improve the support provided to affiliates (including making such support more consistent); to provide a forum for community input into campaigns.

I have been working on a very rough strawman version of the process and I would be interested in hearing you comments about what such a process should involve and what you think it would require. Please feel free to leave such comments at the process talk page section. I would like to have a working page in place by the end of May. This would not need to be a final version. The process can be improved upon over time as we learn about how well it works.

I encourage you to:

Regards

Jseddon (WMF) (talk) Advancement Associate (Community Engagement) -- 02:44, 28 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.

Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign so that we can work together to develop ideas around this important and difficult issue. With thanks,

Becoming a thematic organisation[edit]

Hi! We have been talking during Wikimania about a possibility of ELiSo being a thematic organisation. I still have three questions:

  1. Is our current name okay or we need to change it to Wikimedia Esperanto?
  2. Is it okay to register our organization legally only AFTER we receive a recognition from the AffCom?
  1. Where to apply to thematic organization recognition? This manual tells that I need to contact the AffCom.

Pinging Wing as you have told that at least two members should give an advice. --Lingveno (talk) 19:53, 11 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Lingveno,
  1. the name does not need to be changed
  2. a ThOrg needs to be incorporated, which means that we need your (draft) bylaws for review along with your application as a ThOrg. Once they and your application are approved you can / must incorporate. So that means yes to your question, but you need to incorporate immediately after recognition as ThOrg.
  3. you already contacted AffCom, we have registered you as a candidate ThOrg. We need your bylaws, so we can review them and then continue the process. So as soon as you have them, send us your bylaws.
Hope that helps ;-) --Manuel Schneider (talk) 11:19, 17 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
