Custom mobile.css

I'd like to have a custom css for the mobile appearance, mainly to test css before modifying Mediawiki:Mobile.css. I've created User:MyUserName/mobile.css similar to User:MyUserName/common.css or vector.css, but it doesn't seam to work.

  • Is there a possibility to have a custom, per user, mobile css ?
  • Or is there another way to test css on mobile appearance before modifying Mediawiki:Mobile.css, which will affect millions of viewers (for fr.wikipedia.org)
  • If not, is there a Task to create that ? I didn't find any on Phabircator, but I'm not very good at searching there.

@Zebulon84: You can use User:$username/minerva.css. minerva is the internal name of the mobile skin. Legoktm (talk) 08:51, 16 January 2016 (UTC)
@Legoktm: Thanks ! I thought i already tested that one, but obviously not. --Zebulon84 (talk) 09:25, 17 January 2016 (UTC)

How to delete my account?

My friend is created a this user account using my e-mail and my common user name. Also he was added a image into this. I want to delete that image also this account. How to do it. Please help me. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Mnmsperera (talk) 14:54, 17 January 2016 (UTC)

On Wikimedia projects accounts cannot be deleted, only renamed. The rename request would have to be made by the person in control of the account. For the image, you need to request its deletion at the project where it was uploaded - probably Commons. QuiteUnusual (talk) 08:38, 18 January 2016 (UTC)

How to remove a creative Commons license that was attributed to one of my photographs ?

Hi. Apparently one of the photographs I have taken has a creative Commons license connected to it and this is not right. I never remember okaying this type of use. How do I change it back to no rights granted? I looked through all of the terms of use etc. and cannot find anything. I also tried clicking on the image and there was no place to change it there. The Image is on the wiki page of singer w:Victoria Williams. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 76.208.130.205 (talk) 18:41, 30 January 2016 (UTC)‎

Looks like c:File:Victoria_Williams.jpg is the concerned file. —MarcoAurelio 18:49, 30 January 2016 (UTC)
Original uploader was User:Herzco on the English Wikipedia and there the summary was: "Photograph of singer / songwriter Victoria Williams. Author / Photographer: myself, Beth Herzhaft." --Stryn (talk) 19:06, 30 January 2016 (UTC)

Hi Marco. I don't want to take it down. I just want to change the Creative Commons status. I want the image to stay on Wikipedia BUT I want to grant no rights. How do I do this?

Hi. I think you should be asking at c:COM:VP/C, where they'll better advice you. However Commons only allows images with free licenses there. English Wikipedia on the other hand allows fair use images to stay. If you don't want to take it down, maybe the second option would suit you better. Regards. —MarcoAurelio 14:15, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

Fill Autocomplete From Wikidata api by passing Category

I am stuck on a problem . I am having Code to fill autocomplete with results from wipipedia using wikidata api I have used the following git hub resource .

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/35593986/fill-autocomplete-from-wikidata-api-by-passing-category

My Problem is I want to get data in autocomplete in particular category like if I can use this autocomplete on video in page then it should show results only related to video autocomplete in or for music it should show fill only music category results in autocomplete or so on.Is there any way to pass a category to API.

Thanks Jaswinder

I'm going to ping User:Yurik and User:Lydia_Pintscher_(WMDE), HTH. --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 11:24, 26 February 2016 (UTC)
It is not possible to filter by category this way. Depending on what exactly you want to do you likely need to do an additional API request and check what the value of "instance of" is for each of the results. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 12:22, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

Request

There was a discussion on Wikimedia-l recently about addiction to editing. Someone directed me to this article, which contains an idea from Tristan Harris, a former Google engineer (who suggested it in general, not in relation to Wikimedia). I'm wondering where best to ask the WMF to develop this.

The idea is for opt-in software that asks editors, when they log into a Wikimedia site, how much time they want to spend on it. Several options would appear:

  • the number of hours they want to spend; they would be alerted when that time was up;
  • in addition they could opt to be automatically logged out after that period;
  • they could also opt to be unable to log in again for X hours.

Can someone direct me to the best place to propose this? Phabricator seems to be for bugs, and isn't specifically directed at WMF staff. Pinging Brion Vibber (WMF) (and Brion VIBBER), who was part of the discussion.

Might be worth adding that en-wiki has two user scripts that play similar, but limited, roles: en: Wikipedia:Recovering from Wikipediholism/reminder and en:Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts/WikiBreak Enforcer.

SarahSV talk 03:29, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

Phabricator is actually a good place to add a note because that can be tagged and tracked from future task entries for more concrete work or proposed conference/hackathon sessions, etc; so please do! Like creating a wiki page it's no guarantee of further activity, but we need to start somewhere and it helps to give a place where conversations once started can be picked up again once rediscovered if they don't get dealt with immediately. --brion (talk) 03:45, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

Downloading parts of wiki meta-history dumps

For my project I need to download articles from wiki which meet certain requirements (I need specifically Czech articles which are translations of English ones and then I need the versions of English articles from which the Czech translations came). As I found out, I would need to download the whole meta-history dumps but I cannot do that. Is there a possibility to use a bot, api or sth like that to download just what I need? I got really lost in all the tools provided and cannot find my way out.

Thank you very much.

Reduce the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement

Hi, I have started a project to discuss and eventually reduce the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement. I have already set up a page on Meta called Environmental impact. Now I would like to receive some feedback from people who are more knowledgeable about the subject than me and to ask for more data about Wikimedia's energy consumption. Where would be a good place to ask questions? I am currently considering sending a message to Wikitech-l, would that be a good idea, for example? --Gnom (talk) 21:07, 27 March 2016 (UTC)

Updating translations

Hi, I would like to know how the changes in translations change in the CentralNotice. For example this change happened already a day ago, and here I can see only the old version. Same as in the banner itself. Who and what should do for this update? Thank you for your answer. -- Samat (talk) 15:10, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

It needs to be published, which needs to be done by users with editinterface rights (admin, centralnoticeadmin, stewards, etc), as it needs to edit mediawiki namespace. Matiia (talk) 15:30, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
Thank you, Matiia, but I still don't know how :) I could have changed this page, but I think you set it somewhere in the translation extension to be published. If I changed the state of the translation (roll down box on the top left) to published, then the messages would become published? All of them or I can select somehow, which one would I like to publish? Samat (talk) 16:09, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
Here you can set the state of the translations. But as Matiia said you need editinterface rights to mark the state as "published". And once the translations have been published the new translations will appear. It was marked as published by Matiia as you can see from the logs. --Stryn (talk) 16:23, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
I have the editinterface rights (as a new CN admin), but the handling of the translate extension is new for me. For example now the state of the translations is proofreading again (changed by FuzzyBot at 16:12 UTC), however I see no changes or outdated messages. What can I do if I would update only one message from the message group? Is there a detailed how-to-guide for the system? Samat (talk) 16:34, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

Accessing "Summary" data for images via wikimedia API

How can I access the data found in the "Summary" table that is shown beneath images on wikimedia? Specifically, I want to find the value of "Medium" on the following page:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Adolphe_Braun_-_Untitled_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg

The following API request seems to return some of the data from the Summary table, but not all of it.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&titles=File:Adolphe_Braun_-_Untitled_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg&prop=imageinfo&iiprop=url%7Cextmetadata

Any ideas how I can access this "Medium" value via the API?

Many thanks.

@Mcjiggerlog: You can't, sorry; there's a huge project slowly underway to move all this data out of wikitext and into structured data (at which point you would be very easily able to do what you want), but that's many months away right now, sorry. Converting Image(P18) values into thumb URLs

I want to convert the value returned for the Image (P18) claim from the following API request (and other similar ones) into a image URL: https://www.wikidata.org/w/api.php?action=wbgetentities&format=jsonfm&ids=Q5582

I get a value here of 'Vincent van Gogh - Self-portrait with grey felt hat - Google Art Project.jpg', but I am unsure of what I am meant to do with this value to generate a link to an image file.

The closest I can get is https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Vincent_van_Gogh_-_Self-portrait_with_grey_felt_hat_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg however this is obviously not a direct link to an image. The structure of the thumb links provided on that page is not consistent different images, so I can't programatically use reconstruct them. For example, the thumb links on this image have thumb/a/aa in them, whereas on others they have thumb/b/b3, for example. What do these characters mean? Is there a way to produce thumb links programatically from this value?

Thanks, Mcjiggerlog (talk) 23:58, 12 May 2016 (UTC)

Downside to thumbnails

Somewhere I read that the mobile search has enabled thumbnail images.

That "enhancement" has an unintended negative consequence.

A reader wrote into Wikimedia ticket:2016052910002726 noting that the intended to search for "Felmersham", but by the time the first three letters, the screen populated with several options including fellatio and an image.

I realize that Wikipedia is not censored but we also have a concept of "least astonishment". I know we get emails from people who search for X and are troubled to see X — the appropriate response is - don't search for X, but that's not what happened here.

Apologies if this is not the right forum, can someone tell me where this ought to be reported?--Sphilbrick (talk) 14:52, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

It probably means that people often search for fellatio. As to the least astonishment, it is entirely subjective what really startles people. Ruslik (talk) 17:21, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
You may have missed the point. I don't doubt that many people search for fellatio. I don't doubt that it's a search term thousand times more common than any other word starting with FEL. But if the reader wants to look up cuneiform, types in C - U - N, then pauses to remember whether the next letter is E or I, and is presented with an image of cunnilingus, I don't think it's helpful to explain to them that cunnilingus is searched for more often than cuneiform. It doesn't trouble me that the word might pop up in a list of possible words, but I view that as different than an image. Or perhaps I should say, because it doesn't trouble me, I can imagine that many reasonable people might find it inappropriate. I have no trouble telling them that Wikipedia is not censored and we will not remove articles and images of topics they might prefer not to visit, but there is a major difference between existence of an article which they don't have to look for and an image being presented to them without a request.--Sphilbrick (talk) 18:22, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
It is not clear what you want? To disable this feature? Ruslik (talk) 20:20, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
I'd suggest temporarily disabling until someone can figure out whether a fix is appropriate. I think it is, but it doesn't sound like an easy fix.--Sphilbrick (talk) 01:12, 30 May 2016 (UTC)

Windows Wikipedia App Compatibility Issue

Set Up a Looking Glass Page

Hi. During these days, accessing Wikipedia using China Unicom, which is an ISP in mainland China, has been becoming extremely slow. Chinese Wikipedia editors have ways to get through it, but that inspired me that WMF could set up a webpage for Looking Glass. Category links slow to update

I'm having an issue with a private Wiki that I have setup where category links are slow to update. If a category is added to an article, the category shows as being registered on the article immediately, however when opening the category, the new article does not appear. The delay in updating of the category link is different each time, sometimes a small delay (maybe 30 seconds or less), sometimes longer (approx. 5 minutes). This is in turn affecting the updating of categories displayed via the Category Tree extension which we are using for ease of navigation.

I have tried searching for similar issues reported by other users, but have not come across anything as yet.

The Wiki host is running in the following configuration:

MediaWiki Ver: 1.27

Host OS: Windows Server 2012 R2

Web Server: IIS 8.5

PHP: 5.6.24 (cgi-fcgi)

DB: MySQL 5.7.9

Invitation for review: Technical Collaboration Guideline

Wikimedians, please review something we are working on for the Wikimedia Foundation, the mw:Technical Collaboration Guideline.

The Technical Collaboration Guideline (TCG) is a set of best practice recommendations, for planning and communicating product and project information to Wikimedia communities, in order to work better, together. The TCG allows Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) Product teams and Wikimedia communities to work together in a systematic way in the product development and deployment cycle. It is hoped that the TCG is useful enough to be utilized in planning and communications regarding any project, from anyone. The TCG is intended to be flexible as plans and products change in development; it is a guide whose contents will help build collaborative relationships.

The initial draft of the TCG was written after discussions in small groups with members of the Community Liaisons and Product Management teams, to identify successes and failures in communication, and what we can do to encourage collaboration with the communities. Over the next month, we are seeking review and feedback from Wikimedia community members. All feedback that is left will be read; if there is a case for immediate action, it will be made. All feedback will be taken into consideration when editing the next draft of the TCG. Please keep in mind that the TCG is intended to be lightweight information and instruction and will not be completely comprehensive. The TCG and the conversations about it are in English, but comments from all languages are welcome. We look forward to reading your comments at mw:Talk:Technical Collaboration Guideline. Thanks. MediaWiki default and Esperanto translations

The MediaWiki default bot, which updates translated pages from the Translatewiki, does not update at least 3 pages: MediaWiki:Cite section preview references/eo, MediaWiki:Cite warning/eo, MediaWiki:Cite warning sectionpreview no text/eo. Gamliel Fishkin 03:55, 7 November 2016 (UTC)

That's because your translation was inserted incorrectly: please use Special:Translate (or Special:SearchTranslations) next time. After my dummy edit the translations should be exported this evening. Nemo 10:11, 7 November 2016 (UTC)

"Pages that link to" not updated?

Problem in German Wikipedia: The page https://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Spezial%3ALinkliste&target=Escape-Sequenz lists many articles, for example ISO_8859-2, but the article does not contain a link to "Escape-Sequenz" (neither direct nor through a template). Any ideas, why the pages are listed as linked pages? --Trustable (talk) 16:45, 2 November 2016 (UTC)

Solution: Edit the articles, then they will disappear from the list. --Trustable (talk) 16:44, 9 November 2016 (UTC)

SQL query against production database

Hi, i am trying to get some statistics about how many pages are deleted per year via our notability policy (eg fi:wikipedia:merkittävyys) and who have created those pages. Eg many new users articles we are deleting per year and is there any change in time. However the deleted pages are filtered out from Tool Labs db so i can't just use it and somebody would need to do query for me. My question is which is correct place to ask this?

Query
use fiwiki_p;
SELECT page_title, page_id, page_is_redirect, rev_timestamp, rev_user, rev_user_text, rev_len, rev_deleted, rev_comment
  FROM page,revision
  WHERE page_id=rev_page AND page_namespace=0 AND rev_comment LIKE "%erkittävyys%";

--Zache (talk) 10:41, 18 November 2016 (UTC)

@Zache: I have submitted quarry:query/14165 for you and the results are on that page as well. Not sure if that's what you wanted? Regards, —MarcoAurelio 11:09, 18 November 2016 (UTC)
@MarcoAurelio: The problem with Quarry or direct ToolLabs databases is that they don't include the deleted pages in their page and revision tables and statistics about the deleted stuff is what i am trying to get (and because that this was not what i wanted.) --Zache (talk) 11:17, 18 November 2016 (UTC)

Ah, and my mistake. Deleted pages are in archive table, but it doesn't help much because text and ar_comment fields are nulled. --Zache (talk) 11:49, 18 November 2016 (UTC)

The block

I can be unlocked? The changes were made by my son, please. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Fabriuz (talk)

Your account is not blocked on this wiki. You have to request unblock on the wiki where your account is blocked. You can still edit your talk page on the Italian Wikipedia so you can request to be unblocked. -- Tegel (Talk) 14:07, 18 November 2016 (UTC)

Help me

Hello. I am from Azerbaijan. I have blocked from Proger Help me

We can't help you with that. You have to bring it up on the wiki where your IP-address is blocked. You can edit your talk page and place an unblock request there. Here is a direct link to the talk page. -- Tegel (Talk) 14:38, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

Help with installing Common.css and Common.js

Hello,

Every instruction I have seen on the web says to import them at MediaWiki:Common.css and MediaWiki:Common.js. However, when I do either, I get this error:

 "The requested URL /MediaWiki:Common.css was not found on this server."

Can someone just tell me how to import these into my Wiki? My wiki is here: http://[MyURL]/mediawiki/index.php/Main_Page

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

--Robert

Hi Robert. It can be very frustrating to install your own wiki, especially for myself because I just fumble around with techy things. :) I think you might want to post your request over on the MediaWiki website, not on Wikimedia, though someone here might be able to answer your question. There is a support desk on that website which looks promising. Killiondude (talk) 19:32, 3 December 2016 (UTC)

Thank you, Killiondude!

It sounds like you tried to set up short URLs and some path is incorrectly configured. If you're getting a HTTP 404 error from your Web server, it typically means either your rewrite rules are funky or you didn't appropriately edit a setting in LocalSettings.php (or both!). In addition to the support desk as Killiondude mentioned, we also have real-time interactive chat on IRC in the #mediawiki channel on irc.freenode.net. --MZMcBride (talk) 21:36, 3 December 2016 (UTC)

A new syntax for #if sections idea

The syntax of #if directive is hard to read (especially it is hard to read and understand for nontechnical users). I propose to introduce an alternative syntax for #if directive, having separate open and close tags.

Possible syntax:

<div if="condition">
...
</div>

or maybe

<if condition="...">
...
</if>

It is especially useful for excluding a part of an included template. (Yes, I know about <noinclude> directive, but it is not enough flexible to in/ex-clude parts of a page separately.)

edit.php does not work

When I try to run php5 ../web/w/maintenance/edit.php Tanakh:Title (with suitable stdin), it says:

Saving... failed
Edit aborted by hook.
It gave no explanation.

Please help me to configure it correctly.

I have

$wgNamespaceProtection[NS_TANAKH] = array( 'editauto' );

in my settings for the namespace in question.

I don't remember what `editauto` means. Please help.

It seems that this was because `Moderation` extension which asked me to moderate the bot edits.

I have moderated the edits and now the changes are accomplished. --VictorPorton (talk) 16:36, 11 December 2016 (UTC)

Help

Hi, I am Shriheeran, In a wikipedia in in my common css file i have typed, "display: none;" But now I can't see any thing in that wiki as I have typed that. I know any stewards or admins can edit that page and make my display on that wiki to visible. But how can I solve this problem myself rather than asking help to admins or stewards. Is there are any way please help and answer to my question!--Shriheeran (talk) 10:12, 26 December 2016 (UTC)

@Shriheeran: There is no such file on ta.wp. Please provide a full link. You could probably also edit the file from any other account, or when not being logged in (though that will expose your IP address)? --Malyacko (talk) 10:35, 26 December 2016 (UTC)
IP's can't edit user css/js files. --Stryn (talk) 10:38, 26 December 2016 (UTC)
Which Wikipedia? It's not easy to undo by yourself. With AWB it would be possible or using browser's developer console (or something like that) for example. Stryn (talk) 10:38, 26 December 2016 (UTC)

Problem back

Do you remember problems in es:WP this? It seems the problems are back, but only to Firefox users (like me). The bar and other scripts come and go intermittently. It´s possible to restore the bar pressing Preview several times, even when this is not a permanent or practical solution. Regards. --Ganímedes (talk) 13:38, 19 December 2016 (UTC)

@Ganímedes: Please see the console output of your web browser's developer tools to find reasons for such problems. In this case, ext.gadget.DetectaDesambiguaciones is broken: "TypeError: mw.Api is not a constructor". The line needs to be fixed by a sysop or admin of Spanish Wikipedia. See the docs. --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 10:42, 26 December 2016 (UTC)
Thanks a lot, -AKlapper, I'll do that. Regards. --Ganímedes (talk) 12:49, 27 December 2016 (UTC)

A: On your computer, open Chrome. At the top right, click More Settings. At the bottom, click Show advanced settings. Under "Web Content," make the changes you want: Change everything: Next to "Page zoom," click the Down arrow . Then select the zoom option you want. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 2602:306:cd95:8430:212b:7c6e:8155:33ad (talk) 18:30, 23 February 2016‎ (UTC)

Math equations missing in all pages

In Firefox 3 and some older versions of IE the <math> is not rendered, the <meta> with "background: url()" using svg graphic is not rendered either. The pages without equations are crippled to uselessness. In mid-april 2016 it worked well with using PNG images, and also pages like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Displaying_a_formula refer to using PNG images... There is no mention of changing math technology in your "Tech news" either (at least since March this year, the change occured sometimes after mid-april...)

Using this old versions of web-browsers may be an important security-issue, since newer versions of Firefox with Firefox.js compiled into Omni.ja prevents security editing of snooping configuration items, the Chrome and some IE are unsecure due to inability to switch off javascript, very poor configuration options and more problems...

Web pages packed to MHT (MIME html) file format may be displayed inline in some e-mail clients, which also probably will not support <math> tags... —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 79.98.159.114 (talk) 11:17, 1 June 2016‎ (UTC)

book and pdf creator font size

I do like the 2-column download pdf and create book options. I like to print them with the Adobe Reader print as booklet option. However, the font is then just a bit to small. I can increase that with the scale option of pdfjam bust just 8%. Is there somewhere hidden an option of the book creator for increasing the font size??
