WikiTutur is a language documentation project for languages of Indonesia, focusing on compiling an archive of pronunciation audio recordings on Wikimedia Commons via Lingua Libre, and inputting lexicographical information on Wiktionary. This project was first initiated by volunteers from the Wikimedia Jakarta Community, and have been occasionally funded by WMF's Rapid Fund. WikiTutur programs are currently organized by Wiktionary Indonesia Community, in collaboration with local Wikimedia and non-Wikimedia communities in Indonesia. As of June 2025, WikiTutur has documented over 40 Indonesian languages (by ISO 639-3 codes), with 15,000+ audio recordings uploaded on Commons and 6,000+ entry pages improved or created on Indonesian Wiktionary.

Background

[edit]

The inagural campaign was first held under the title "WikiTutur: Kolaborasi Wiktionary dan Lingua Libre untuk Pelestarian Bahasa di Indonesia" with a grant from WMF Rapid Fund for the 2023–2024 fiscal year. This first phase was initiated by volunteers from the Wikimedia Jakarta Community, who worked together with other local Wikimedia communities in Indonesia to set up series of online and offline events.

Throughout the first phase of the project, workshops on language documentation using Wiktionary and Lingua Libre were conducted in several cities across Indonesia. These workshops trained a large cohort of participants from diverse language communities, targeting not only active Wikimedians but also the general public. This broad approach was able to introduce the language documentation initiative to a wide audience, though it was not without limitations, particularly in terms of depth.

The second phase of the project experimented with a narrower approach, focusing on select languages and working together with non-Wikimedia agencies, organizations, and communities, in hope of bringing more depth. Following this experimentation, we decided to separate the events into two formats in the third phase: one-day introductory workshops for new contributors to LL and Wiktionary, as well as two-days documentary workshops and meetups for trained contributors involving native speakers from target communities.
