Unblock requests

Category:Requests_for_unblock – There are two unblock requests that need to be examined. One request is from July 2012, and the other is fairly recent. Mjbmr has been blocked since March 2011, and Abd has been blocked since September 2011. These individuals have been blocked for long enough. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 19:48, 31 August 2012 (UTC)

Homophobic attack

Can someone please block Stopallspam1? He's a British sockpuppeteer from enwiki who dislikes homosexuals, atheists, and me intensely. Stopallspam is also obsessed with RPG video games, especially RPG's with medieval-ish fantasy settings. He thinks of himself as a Christian Crusader (he isn't doing it for the lulz). I would appreciate it if someone were to block Stopallspam1 and en:Special:Contributions/86.27.125.13. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 01:22, 4 October 2012 (UTC)

Fix broken central notices

Hi as always the central notices are breaking some pages again. This time it seems it's one of the fundraiser notices, and since i can't seem to reach those people, nor seem to be able to understand where to leave comments specific to central notices (please do some weeding in the 10's of pages, half of which are apparently historic), I'm leaving my comment here in hopes someone understands how to deal with it. There is a B12_JimmyBlank notice created by Chad Spencer (who does not have his mail address listed), that is causing bug 40609 on RTL wiki's by using "left: -9999px;" in the CSS. This CSS style should NEVER be used to hide stuff from the screen. I don't care how it's fixed, either by disabling or properly fixing it, but this should not be live. Done [1] Feel free to reopen if a block is needed (the last couple of comments by Ottava seemed better to me). --Nemo 00:51, 22 October 2012 (UTC)
The statements were about official positions (Liam's was GLAM, which is one of the main problems I have pointed to - "You aren't the real producer but you have latched on, built your own niche, and do whatever you can to gain more control." That is clearly a reference to his user page which claims an FA connection for something he didn't actually put together and was a very minor presence in the page. However, he claims credit because he worked with GLAM and did very tertiary things. This is common among GLAM in general and why so many Featured Article contributors do not like GLAM at all). Saying that the position is contradictory to Wikipedia is no where near "incivil." Far, far worse was said about Jimbo having Founder related powers. And the second point is a very good statement. It is bad enough to attack someone, but to use short hand like "u r" does you no favor. It is obvious with statements like "um... no" and other such things are incivil and insulting. I am the only actual content producer on that page and I have substantial merit. The only people, like Nemo bis, to come out against me have a long history of conflict of interest and do so out of ideology. Nemo bis was shot down over such a thing in the past. Labelling critics as "incivil" merely because they have actually done the work to allow this place to even have any reason to exist is quite demeaning. Ottava Rima (talk) 01:37, 22 October 2012 (UTC)
Ottava, there is several ways to say the same thing. You are the direct type of person, I get it, I even admire you for that (not many people in Wikimedia world have the balls* for that). But then, some people get offended by that. That is why I normally avoid it (when I don't I am prepared to suffer the consequences - Ask people in Gendergap-l for example). So, what I'm asking you is to at least try to talk with then in a way they don't feel offended by (after all if they do, there is no more conversation since they will stop listen to you). Can you do that, please? Béria Lima msg 01:46, 22 October 2012 (UTC)
PS.: Can I say "balls" on meta, or should I block myself for that?
PS. 2: I know I blocked you in the past, but I can guarantee I have nothing against you. You can even say I have COI (which I don't think I do, btw) but please try to follow what I said.
Beria, would you really say "balls"? :) And how else can one express themselves to say that they resent people having status, money, or power derived from other people's work? Isn't the whole point of being a free encyclopedia that we aren't into such things? And Beria, I admit you don't have a CoI. :P But yes, do I expect them to be offended because I demand that their positions get eliminated and any status they have gained in those positions is terminated? Yes. Just like anyone would be offended if they lost a cushy job. Incivility/civility has nothing to do with the other person being offended. After all, I am offended that my articles led to certain people having any kind of power around here. I am of the belief that the only people who should have any say are the content creators. There are a lot of people like me, but we have no authority because there are entrenched positions. Ottava Rima (talk) 02:04, 22 October 2012 (UTC)
Well I said "balls" already above. I also said "fuck off" in a mailing list (which get me banned from it), and also offended Barry and Sue in private mails, so believe me when I tell you that I do understand your frustation. And to be frank, I understand your point way better now than in the diffs listed above. Can't you just say that to then? Tell then that you don't believe in what they are try to do because you against the whole principle behind it? Is way better than this, and don't get the admins in the horrible position of need to discuss whether to block you or not. Béria Lima msg 02:12, 22 October 2012 (UTC)
PS.: If you must offend someone, do it privately! So no one can account you for it ;) ;)
I've never had to cuss or call people stupid, ugly, or something similar to get banned. :) And Liam knows my feelings towards him. That is why he put something like "um... no" in such a condescending way. That is what tends to happen around the WMF - too many people on the Foundation listen more to their friends than people who demonstrated above and beyond work. Ottava Rima (talk) 02:20, 22 October 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, Nemo. These comments, directed at Liam, are examples of comments that are IMO unquestionably crossing the line towards creating a toxic environment: "Unlike you, I produced actual quality content. You are the perfect example of everything that was wrong with Wikimedia" or "You hype up minor achievements, put up flashy symbols, and use it to gain points in the 'movement.' (...) I blame you and those just like you for the real problems threatening Wikipedia." (Emphasis mine.)
Obviously we all have varying degrees of tolerance for what constitutes constructive/valuable engagement and what doesn't, but I think most of us recognize such comments as clearly outside the parameters of acceptable discourse. So far, unfortunately, Ottava Rima has shown no evidence that he understands this, and instead responds by further lashing out. This is why I think an initial temporary block may prove necessary. I welcome other admins handling the situation, but as can be seen above, that won't stop Ottava from making "COI" claims against those admins as well.--Eloquence (talk) 09:27, 23 October 2012 (UTC)
Ill add this one: Mr. Moller is, as I have told you before, one of the people who has to be removed from the Foundation before it can move forward. from there: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Sue_Gardner#Eric_Moller.27s_attempt_to_intimidate_and_harass. Thats quite disgusting.--Angel54 5 (talk) 14:19, 23 October 2012 (UTC)
Really? Statements like yours are the real incivility and exactly the problem. Calling for someone to be removed from incompetence is necessary and it is a problem that people like you (who is heavily involved in Wikimedia Chapters and what I am criticizing) run in and attack legitimate critics. Mr. Moller was already embarrassed and I had a few staffers from the Foundation including multiple Stewards drop me emails saying that they were ashamed he would act like that. One reporter posted publicly on his user page that he acted inappropriately. To be honest, Stewards should block Mr. Moller for harassment. Do you see me posting up a thread for that? Because that is the only real violation. Is it a coincidence that the original poster was part of the "Outreach Wiki" with Mr. Moller? That the only one who thought it was a problem was Nemo bis, with one of the largest histories of attacks on me cross wiki and has consistently been told he is conflicted? Even Beria, when seeing the context of Liam being the GLAM originator and that I was referring to his official capacity said that the situation didn't really exist. It is a mockery of what Meta is to see this behavior. It is absolutely shameful behavior. And it all comes from people who didn't spend hundreds of hours writing important content for the encyclopedia. That is why we get dragged in the mud in the papers. And Angel, your background is easy to see and you are not an unbiased contributor. Meta doesn't operate that way. We are not the Foundation's special Wiki. We don't give the Foundation members or Wikimedia Chapter Members special rights. Ottava Rima (talk) 16:06, 23 October 2012 (UTC)
"I think most of us recognize" That is really incivil and you know it. You had a Wikimedia Outreach person, a Wikimedia Chapter person, and a person with a long conflict of interest agree with you. An unbiased Steward came in and realized that there was nothing, and an unbiased reporter also said you were being abusive. This is exactly the problem that I am pointing out, and more reason why Ms. Gardner needs to immediately fire you. You cannot act abusive and surround yourself with people who you give power to merely to help you stay around. Ottava Rima (talk) 16:09, 23 October 2012 (UTC)
Here is the way I see it:
@Angel54 5, Say that someone should be fired is a opinion. Isn't offensive to express your own opinion, and he did it without include any personal attacks on it. If you think he is the best employee on WMF, is - again - your opinion. As long as you or him don't call him "son of a b*" or something like, we can't censor people for having opinions.
@Erik, some people really thinks like you, and some doesn't. If was a clear case Ottava would be blocked by now. We are only discussing here because isn't that clear. I asked him, and he said we will refrain himself from this comments (and I didn't see any like that after the request I made), so I don't think he should be blocked now, because at this point it would be a vendetta block.
@Ottava, you are right in your point that we don't treath WMF or Chapters people with special rights, but remember we don't do that with community members as well. Everyone is the same here, and we will act upon their acts on this wiki only. (for cross wiki problems please go to SR) :)
Can we close this and archive? Béria Lima msg 16:38, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

Just let it go. The waters are now so muddied from various cross-currents that there's no way any block here would come off as looking fair, as opposed to at the very least giving the appearance "selective enforcement". I mean, the sort of evidence given as "examples of comments that are IMO unquestionably crossing the line towards creating a toxic environment" isn't more than the personal attacks I'm expected to stoically endure from WMF-related people as a matter of course :-( - "Obvious troll is obvious. Do not feed" [2] "... ridiculous inflammatory comments like the one he made are not going to be treated as if they were substantive contributions to the discussion." [3] "That has nothing to do with whether I am allowed to say that I think you're a troll who does more harm than good, ..." [4]. The flamer there is not going to be in danger of getting blocked for statements "outside the parameters of acceptable discourse". And if I made a big issue of it, I'd likely end up snarked-at for that being supposed troll-proof, or worse. The offense here is such small stuff, with such a power-imbalance, that prosecuting it ends up looking very petty. -- Seth Finkelstein (talk) 04:50, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

I agree with Seth, although I think that the demand, so. should be thrown out is a personal attack, cause it implies, he did a poor job. Who really does a poor job in all this discussions is Ottima Riva, he could have made proposals from his view. If he thinks he is a good author, then he should have an opinion thats worth of considering. But thats simply my view...--Angel54 5 (talk) 16:56, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

Site notice for Women's workshop in Mumbai

Hi all, the Mumbai community is organising a Women's workshop in Mumbai, India. I was wondering if someone can help us with SiteNotice, so that we could get new participants who is seriously curious about editing Wikipedia but never received motivation to do so.
