Something going wrong

Hi. Any ideas about why Meta:Requests for comment/Header is not showing on Meta:Requests for comment? I think I followed all steps but something went wrong and I don't see the issue. Sorry for any inconvenience, it's being some time since I don't edit... -- M\A 18:48, 3 January 2015 (UTC)

FuzzyBot didn't yet update [1] (you'd better not create /en subpages manually). Bugzilla:46716 as usual, it seems. --Nemo 18:54, 3 January 2015 (UTC)
Thanks. I deleted both /en and /es subpages, and removed the page from translation. Added back the translation tags and will wait until the bot updates, as when clicking on "mark this page for translation" I get "translation unit 25" and such, when there's no that much units to translate. I also wrapped the header on {{TNT}} on the main page. Was that ok? Best. -- M\A 19:03, 3 January 2015 (UTC)

Were and how can i translate this thats now live in English on other projects in other languages? /Hangsna (talk) 19:53, 23 January 2015 (UTC)

It looks like this banner is not using the standard Translate system for CNbanners. Instead, it's being transcluded from a previous translation (which has only 3 languages) by using int. I guess that's why it's not translatable from the Translate extension. @Beria: Could you make it translatable from the Translate extension? --Glaisher (talk) 05:15, 24 January 2015 (UTC)
Sure, will change it right away. Béria L. de Rodríguez msg 13:01, 25 January 2015 (UTC)

Distribution list for Embassies?

Hi everyone. I am looking for a global message delivery list which only features Embassies/translation noticeboards. Wikidata doesn't help much in that its list is not the list of the pages where messages get actually delivered. Thanks for your attention! --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 13:01, 2 February 2015 (UTC)

FYI

I blocked your Bot on dewiki. You have no Botflag please make a request on dewiki Bot/Anfragen --Itti (talk) 09:22, 7 February 2015 (UTC)

This is not a user talk page. --Glaisher (talk) 09:31, 7 February 2015 (UTC)
@Itti: Oh, I guess you meant User:Translation Notification Bot. It is not a user account but it is a system account used by TranslationNotifications extension just like User:MediaWiki_message_delivery. If you want bot flag to be set to the account, it needs to be done by the locals. Please consider unblocking it. --Glaisher (talk) 09:39, 7 February 2015 (UTC)
Simple misunderstanding by the sysop, will need to be reversed. Continues locally: [2]. --Nemo 09:40, 7 February 2015 (UTC)

FuzzyBot breaking links

FuzzyBot has recently moved several pages without leaving redirects. This has resulted in several broken links, as at Wikilegal, where the redlinked pages were moved and the bot didn't leave a redirect or adjust links to the pages. Since users and discussions on other wikis may link here as well, I think the bot should be instructed to leave the redirects intact (in addition to restoring the deleted ones). – Philosopher Let us reason together. 02:04, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

FuzzyBot only moves pages when a user does a move on the translatable pages. And there is no option to leave redirects when doing so. This is phab:T41023. --Glaisher (talk) 04:23, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

Request for Arabic and French translations of WikiArabia2015

I think WikiArabia2015 should have translations in both Arabic and French. French is a major language of Tunisia, where the conference will be held, so it is also very important. Also WikiArabia/fr needs to be completed. WhisperToMe (talk) 07:05, 27 February 2015 (UTC)

Remove from translation

I want to remove User:Baffo do translator.
If possible, move the notices translator on the talk page GseSro. Thank you.

You don't simply move user page to change your username. Please request it at SRUC. --Glaisher (talk) 16:18, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

Why the bad name Babylon?

I cannot understand why it was not possible to make a better name for this Wikimedia project. 1) Is not "Babylon" as a name already occupied on Internet? 2) Was not it in Babel and not in Babylon confusion of tongues occurred? 3) The name Babylon represents something very bad for many people, mostly religious but also other people. Ask many Christian groups, Rastafarians, etc. It's like to name it "Satan", "Western (white) domination and oppression", "a world order is on the way to perdition", etc. 4) Historically it is a bloody occupying force similar to Assyria. 5) Babylon is a part of Middle Eastern and Western history / historiography. I'm currently traveling in China, Malaysia and Indonesia, and here nobody knows anything about what Babylon is. They have never heard the word and / or do not know its history. WHY not call it "Worldtongues" or something similar? --Caspiax (talk) 00:14, 12 March 2015 (UTC) (meditate no bad, love is lovely and war is ugly)

Needs more documentation, I'm a bit nervous that what's a bad user name, spam-blacklisted? or with some invalid characters, i.e. w:Mojibake? --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 02:33, 14 March 2015 (UTC)

Ignore me, I've paid attention to the link. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 02:40, 14 March 2015 (UTC)

I don't know where to request that, so I'm writing here.

The translation of the page mentioned is restricted only to English, and restricted from any other language. But the thing is that on the Special:LanguageStats for Ukrainian, the message group "Wikimedia Russia" appears as if there still are some untranslated messages in it. I've translated everything I could in that group. The only page left untranslated in that group is restricted from translation to any language except English.

So, can anybody do anything about that? I want that message group to be removed from Special:LanguageStats for Ukrainian language. Otherwise why should it annoy our translators showing that "there are untranslated messages" if they are actually restricted from translation?..--Piramid ion  19:03, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

From the history of that page: last year another user tried to translate the page to Romanian and got the error message: diff --Piramid ion  19:09, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

Interlanguage templates

I think it would be a good idea to create templates, which are language unindependent. It will make it so much easier to reuse content from other language versions. I figure you could put in a language code, so that the labels are translated into the local language.

Exampel:

English language version: {{Succession box | title = | years = | with = | before = | after = }}

Interlanguage version: {{AA11 | AA11L (language code) | AA11A = | AA11B = | AA11C = | AA11D = | AA11E = }}

-HenrikKbh (talk) 08:07, 11 April 2015 (UTC)

Do you have a concrete example of a specific template that you would use differently on a specific page/wiki? This sounds like an implementation proposal for Global-Wiki, I suggest that you add your suggestion on the talk page there. --Nemo 18:38, 11 April 2015 (UTC)

FuzzyBot updating in translation pages

Today I saw that FuzzyBot has updated translation sub-pages after a change was made to the english source page (see Meta_talk:Discussion_pages). Since then, the change has been reverted but the bot didn't update that. Meanwhile it was fixed an hour ago but I want to verify that it won't happen again. How does the bot works? Does it work automatically or is there someone that operates it? Hummingbird (talk) 16:11, 19 April 2015 (UTC)

It does work automatically. Normally, if there are issues, a null-edit to a random translation subpage helps. Vogone (talk) 16:40, 19 April 2015 (UTC)
Yeah, what Vogone said, it works automatically when someone marks it for translation but sadly does hiccup fairly frequently. A null edit and then a translation admin marking it for translation usually does it. Jalexander--WMF 22:00, 19 April 2015 (UTC)

Special:SupportedLanguages restored

Nikerabbit just put an end to the painful wait, now the special page works again (but you have to open a specific subpage to see something). Example: Special:SupportedLanguages/it. --Nemo 15:10, 23 April 2015 (UTC)

Not that per this gerrit, translations of special pages and magic words (and may include namespaces) will no longer be updated, therefore changes of them should submit to Phabricator iirc. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 05:45, 19 May 2015 (UTC)

Forcing replacement of my wikipedia user page with my meta user page ?

In addition to my main contributions to the English Wikipedia, I frequently make small contributions to other languages as well.

For such languages I would previously create a minimal user page, with a link to my English one (so reviewers of my changes could get an idea of who I am).

In April this year I noticed that when I attach to an account in a new language, my meta user page is automatically rendered on my user page for that language.

That's very handy - thanks to whomever made that happen.

Now I would like to force my 32 (!) old and minimalistic user pages (see below) some of which do not support the SUL box template to be reset, so that the meta page gets rendered there as well. (Emptying the user page is not enough, and moving it places a redirect there, so that also does not work).

I would much appreciate if someone here could help with that - and if this is not the right place for this question, I would appreciate help in finding the right place.

Help

Hi, I would like to help out, assuming I have the required skillset. Please forgive any violations of standards as I am new and a bit hesitant regarding making edits as I do not want to create "make work" problems for others because of my ignorance. Please let me know if I make a mistake so that I can correct it. Any documentation that would help me get a comprehensive understanding of the job at hand would be most helpful and much appreciated. I should pick the method up quick once I have instructions and a collection of reference material at hand. I'm looking forward to working together. Hopefully, in the end, I'll have provided more help than I required. Useed.saTurnH (talk) 17:21, 20 July 2015 (UTC)

@Useed.saTurnH: I guess you're talking about translations, which is the point of this page, so you can read the documentation on MediaWiki. Matiia (talk) 17:51, 20 July 2015 (UTC)

Spanish Proofreading request

Hi folks. I have an annoucement related to the IEG open call that has gone through a pass for a Spanish translation, but the editor has requested another Spanish-speaking editor to review before I send it off. Is there someone who might be able to review it in the next few days? The message is just a few sentences long. With thanks, I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 22:32, 9 September 2015 (UTC)

Content translators needed for a user study on article recommendations

Hi!

The Design Research team at the Wikimedia Foundation is seeking volunteers to participate in a series of interviews about translating articles on Wikipedia. The goal of the study is to understand how experienced translators find and select articles to translate from one Wikipedia to another. The results of this study will help improve automated article recommendation tools for content translators.

We would like to speak to editors who have experience translating articles across Wikipedia languages. The only requirements for participating in this study are:

1) the editor must have previously translated at least one Wikipedia article to or from English and one of the following languages: Catalan, Farsi, French, Italian, Spanish, or Swahili.*

2) the editor must be available to speak with a WMF researcher over Google Hangout; if you haven't used Google Hangouts before, don't worry, we will walk you through it. Your participation will take no preparation, and all you have to do is show up at the Google Hangout with your laptop/desktop ready to go.

Each study session will be approximately 50 minutes in length, and can be scheduled at a time that works best for the participants. If you're interested in participating, please send a message with your availability (be sure to note your time zone) to designresearch@wikimedia.org. Thank you for helping us improve content translation!

Sincerely,

Samantha Becker & Jonathan Morgan

Wikimedia Design Research

*These are the languages that we are testing the new recommendation tools in initially.

Translating translate-workflow-states to esperanto

Saluton !

I try to translate this : https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Translate&group=translate-workflow-states&language=eo

But my translations are not saved. It keeps noticing me that my translations are unsaved, but wont give me a hint on how I may change that…

Can someone help me and explain me what the problem?

--Psychoslave (talk) 10:37, 18 October 2015 (UTC)

There is a text: "You have to be an administrator to make translations for this group". Please post the translations here, so that some Meta admin can add the translations. Regards, --Stryn (talk) 10:40, 18 October 2015 (UTC)
I see no such a text in my interface… Where should I post translations ? --Psychoslave (talk) 12:53, 18 October 2015 (UTC)
Ah right, it can be seen only when using Meta in English. You can post them either on this talk page or make a subpage under your username and post a link here or whatever you prefer. --Stryn (talk) 13:09, 18 October 2015 (UTC)

Here it is:

Could you be kind enough to also give me more information on why this restrictions are set, and if there are any thing I may do to directly make propositions into the interface? --Psychoslave (talk) 14:32, 18 October 2015 (UTC)

Done, thanks. There was some discussion about it on Meta_talk:Babylon/Archives/2012#Permission_Problem_with_Group_translate-workflow-states. So, those messages are in the MediaWiki namespace, and only admins can edit MediaWiki namespace. I don't know how the current system could be improved. --Stryn (talk) 14:43, 18 October 2015 (UTC)
Wouldn't it possible to create a MediaWiki namespace translator group/role and let people join in on demand? --Psychoslave (talk) 15:07, 18 October 2015 (UTC)

News

Since no one has updated the news section for three years, the only function it had was making it look like the portal is not being used any longer. I've removed it for the time being. /Julle (talk) 10:09, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

Thank you! --Lsanabria (talk) 14:52, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

The aggregate translation shows there are many very poor translation units (headers and unmodifiable "tracked" templates together with text, signatures incorrectly marked as translatable etc.). Can someone help fix now that translations are non-existing (rather than later, when we'd risk discarding translations)? So far we only got 8 units translated to French. Note, an alternative could be to move all voting to a subpage transcluded from the proposals (maybe with LST), so that we don't have to constantly remark. Nemo 10:29, 1 December 2015 (UTC)

@Nemo bis: Hi. I have already fixed two pages (Categories, Bots and gadgets) and can do the same to the rest of them. I'm not sure what you mean by saying that headers are some of the "poor translation units" (upd: I see, headers together with text - I've separated them) - please take a look at my corrections and tell me what you think. I've put the translate tags around "Votes" headers, but I couldn't figure out how to translate them all easily (since there can be many identical headers) except for one header at a time.
Besides, I didn't move the voting to a subpage, should I? And I don't know what to do with the signatures, which are included into the translation units - move them out of the translation units, or put them into the tvar tags?--Piramidion 22:41, 2 December 2015 (UTC)
  • I guess, I've fixed everything already. But there's one problem: some users add new proposals, and people don't know what to do with them. One of them was reverted by some voter. I deleted another, since the user requested creation of a navigation template that uses an image as a background (an imagemap template). I explained on his talk page in his homewiki, that it already exists on some projects, or the tags <imagemap></imagemap> can be used instead. But on this page 2015 Community Wishlist Survey/Commons I didn't venture to delete a late proposal since it already had 7 support votes. So I marked it for translation instead.--Piramidion 16:42, 3 December 2015 (UTC)

Feature request — 1-click Copy article from source to new target language / automatic Machine translate article text

I would like to quickly and easily copy articles to a different language for translation (1-click article cloning across languages). This would make creating stubs (at a minimum) incredibly easy.

I would also like the option to machine translate this copied article.

It seems Google and Bing are now good enough that this Machine Translation (MT) mode of replicating articles would be an effective way to grow (especially) non-English Wikis and to increase participation by taking out the complex drudgery of creating an article. Users are more likely to improve machine-translated article than to create and populate them from scratch.

MT-articles could also be color-coded (warning yellow border?) to distinguish their uncertain quality. Rotating these new articles through the front page (perhaps based on hit volume in other languages) would also certainly help.

At least for the top 10 wikis—by size or word count—this could be a boon. Wiki size likely also correlates positively to the size of the language data sets on which Google and Bing are based, which should generally correlate to MT-quality.

As a freelance translator, I make frequent use of Wikipedia in German and English. Articles often exists in only one of the two languages, and this would make it much easier for me to add value. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by CptTuttle (talk)
