Hi Saileshpat,

I have noticed your comment at Talk:Wikimedia Foundation elections/Board elections/2015 and I would like to give you a feedback about that.

The problem another user highlighted is not the age in itself, but more the lack of experience for such a responsible position. It is extremely rare for an 18-year old person to have enough experience to manage a not-for-profit organisation with a budget of several dozen million dollars. I think that it would be better for you to get such experience in a smaller not-for-profit organisation before applying for a position in the board of Wikimedia Foundation.

I appreciate your interest for Wikipedias in Indic languages and I agree that working with this languages is important. However, there is little the Wikimedia Foundation itself can do about that as WMF is much stronger in managing global issues than working in particular countries, so it will make much more sense for you to dedicate your time for local projects in India.

Given your goal of a "Wikimedia Revolution in India", I would suggest you joining Wikimedia India and/or CIS, as these organisations are actively involved in promoting projects in Indic languages. I think this is the best way to dedicate your efforts, and you will be able to get an experience of working in a not-for-profit organisation there.

(Just in case, this is just my personal opinion and I am not involved in a board election other than being a simple voter). Best regards, — NickK (talk) 22:33, 6 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hello NickK,Thank you for your feedback. I am happy to see your concern towards Indic language Wikipedias .
Yes, I don't have much experience but i am coordinating with CIS since last 3 years as CIS-A2K takes initiatives for Oriya Wikipedia and a member of Wikimedia India since march 2015. In Indic language we have 20+ Wikipedias and many of them are 10 or more than 10 year old but due to limited resources , man power and awareness some of them are now inactive or have less growth. Nowadays am giving my topmost priority to outreach programs for Odia Wikipedia and we are getting better outcomes like,
I have 4 projects in my hand :
  • Archaeological Survey of India.
  • State Tribal Museum.
  • Odia daily news paper Dharitri
  • And, am working to bring Odisha Tourism under Qrpedia project.
These all will be finalized within 1-2 months.
I know handling Wikimedia board is not easy as you have mentioned but if I get a chance to serve, i will give my best to gain experience and serve well to the community. I have skill and will to achieve it. Thanks & Regards -- Sailesh Patnaik (Talk2Me|Contribs) 11:28, 7 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I think the problem is that you will gain your experience during your term in Wikimedia board, while many voters prefer to elect candidate who already have this experience. It would be great if you manage to achieve a success for Odia Wikipedia and try to replicate it for other Indic Wikipedias. This would be a kind of experience that would be highly appreciated on Wikimedia board. Best regards, — NickK (talk) 19:51, 8 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees Elections 2015[edit]

Dear candidate. My general opinion about administration of Wikimedia is negative. Many texts and images had been removed with pretext of protection of rights of the owners of the copyright owners. The special permissions by the copyright owners were just ignored, and removed together with the files. In particular, this refers to images of the Soviet dissidents and their texts.

Below I suggest only few examples in order to let you know what is happening: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sofiya_Kalistratova&oldid=649939072 https://ru.wikisource.org/w/index.php?title=Софья_Васильевна_Каллистратова&oldid=93595 https://ru.wikisource.org/w/index.php?title=Леонард_Борисович_Терновский&type=revision&diff=1312548&oldid=585736

I investigated the case and I revealed that many removals were performed by bureaucrat Lozman, who has absolutely no experience with obtaining permission from the copyright owners and does not even remember, who made him bureaucrat. However, this is only example.

Sorry for being late, but I just received the invitation to vote. You still have two days to change my opinion about at least one of the candidates suggested. One example of complain by the author is available at site TORI, http://mizugadro.mydns.jp/t/index.php/Kouznetsov,_permission I mention it because it has English version, although many Russian authors were offended in the similar way.

Now I formulate the question:

Do you think it is still possible to handle the cases mentioned?

Do you think that you can find time to deal with the cases mentioned?

Sincerely, Domitori (talk) 08:03, 28 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Saileshpat,

The Wikimedia Foundation is beginning a new initiative called Community Capacity Development. In it, we have conducted some research about community capacities, and documented what we've learned in these pages we are now inviting you to consider translating.

We hope these pages can serve as a basis for very concrete conversation between WMF and specific communities about possible projects to build specific capacities in interested communities. The work is to be based on interest and mutual agreement, not on top-down dictates from WMF. That's why it's important these documents -- this page and the six sub-pages mentioned in the navigation bar at its top -- reach the different communities in their own language.

Thank you very much for your consideration, and please let me know if anything is unclear.

Selection process[edit]

A week or so ago, we informed you that we received your application. Now, let us tell you about the selection procedure. We want the communities to select their representatives. We have posted on your Wikipedia's Village Pump and asked to comment on your application. Though we understand it is quite difficult to assess one’s contribution on the basis of endorsements only, it is impossible on our end to select one from your community as a representative without your consent. --TitoDutta 00:30, 10 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

What future IdeaLab campaigns would you like to see?[edit]

Hi there,

I’m Jethro, and I’m seeking your help in deciding topics for new IdeaLab campaigns that could be run starting next year. These campaigns aim to bring in proposals and solutions from communities that address a need or problem in Wikimedia projects. I'm interested in hearing your preferences and ideas for campaign topics!

Here’s how to participate:

Take care,

MassMessage delivery error[edit]

Hi Saileshpat, Please make sure that with sending the Education newsletter, all the div tags are also closed! Otherwise the pages where it is added with content added under it are all messed up. See here. Thanks! Romaine (talk) 14:54, 9 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Romaine: Thank you for pointing out the mistake. Am extremely sorry that I messed up the newsletter. This was the first time I used the mass messenger right and I got this div> error but I was unable to figure it.Is there anyway through which I can solve this? -- Sailesh Patnaik (Talk2Me|Contribs) 15:15, 9 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Sailesh Patnaik, The key in this kind of codes is that you need the equal amount of opening div-tags (<div ..>) as closing div-tags (</div>). In the message 4 opening divs were used, but only one closing div-tag. So three closing div-tags were missing. This results in the situation that everything below the newsletter is part of the divs, while it should be outside. As publisher of the This Month in GLAM newsletter, I would advise you to have the coding/look/etc you use every time copied somewhere, so you do not have to create it each time again and will not forget some essential parts. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 22:28, 9 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Future IdeaLab Campaigns results[edit]

Last December, I invited you to help determine future ideaLab campaigns by submitting and voting on different possible topics. I'm happy to announce the results of your participation, and encourage you to review them and our next steps for implementing those campaigns this year. Thank you to everyone who volunteered time to participate and submit ideas.

With great thanks,

Inspire Campaign on content curation & review[edit]

I've recently launched an Inspire Campaign to encourage new ideas focusing on content review and curation in Wikimedia projects. Wikimedia volunteers collaboratively manage vast repositories of knowledge, and we’re looking for your ideas about how to manage that knowledge to make it more meaningful and accessible. We invite you to participate and submit ideas, so please get involved today! The campaign runs until March 28th.

All proposals are welcome - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is welcome - your skills and experience can help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign to improve review and curation tasks so that we can make our content more meaningful and accessible! I JethroBT (WMF) 05:39, 29 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Open Call for Individual Engagement Grants[edit]

Greetings! The Individual Engagement Grants (IEG) program is accepting proposals until April 12th to fund new tools, research, outreach efforts, and other experiments that enhance the work of Wikimedia volunteers. Whether you need a small or large amount of funds (up to $30,000 USD), IEGs can support you and your team’s project development time in addition to project expenses such as materials, travel, and rental space.

With thanks, I JethroBT (WMF), Community Resources 15:57, 31 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Saileshpat-- can I move this page back to the Grants namespace where it started? If you're working on your application, it's OK to keep it there and work on it as long as you need to. The other reason it's helpful is so that it's easier to track within some of the systems we're using. Thanks, I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 18:14, 18 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Jethro, While creating the draft I found this "The start date should be at least 6 weeks after you submit your grant request to allow time for review, discussion, and revision", so this will be very late for the funding as we have the event on 4th June. That's why I moved it to my user page. Next time I will post it on time. Thanks --Sailesh Patnaik (talk)18:53, 18 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Saileshpat: That language about six weeks is not accurate; that is my mistake, and I'm very sorry to have interrupted your plans for this grant proposal. It should have read "two weeks" per the instructions under Step 3 on Grants:Project/Rapid/Learn. Having spoken with the grant officer, AWang (WMF), you are welcome to apply and we encourage you to do so; we're in the beginning of the program, so there aren't too many proposals to review, and we don't think it will take too long to review your idea. I'm going to move the page back to the Grants namespace to its original location. Feel free to adjust any of the dates or other information as you need to, and when you're ready to apply, please change the "status" parameter in the Probox template to "proposed." Thanks again, and my apologies for the confusion. I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 17:45, 23 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
(Proposal has been moved back to Grants:Project/Rapid/Odia Wikipedia's 14th Birthday meetup. I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 17:50, 23 May 2016 (UTC) )[reply]
Dear Jethro,, I am sorry , I forgot to mention that am an employee of CIS which is an APG grantee of Wikimedia Foundation. I have moved my request page again for the same reason as it will be a Conflict of Interest. -- Sailesh Patnaik (Talk2Me|Contribs) 18:25, 23 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.

Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign so that we can work together to develop ideas around this important and difficult issue. With thanks,

I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 17:47, 31 May 2016 (UTC) (Opt-out instructions)[reply]

Whose Knowledge? News - February 2017[edit]

Thanks for all of your support for Whose Knowledge? so far! Get ready, we're going to need lots of your help in 2017 :)

What's new in 2017:

1. Volunteers needed

As Whose Knowledge? grows, there are lots of things to do! Can you help?

  • Are you good with data entry, categories, mailing lists or social media? We especially need people to help with organizing knowledge for Dalit History Month, and building out our communications (including this monthly newsletter!) right now!
  • If you're interested in volunteering for these or any other projects, please signup here

2. Pilot projects

Building partnerships and testing our approach with marginalized communities.

  • Dalit History Month: We're working with Equality Labs to support Dalit communities in South Asia and the United States to map knowledge and create Wikipedia content. Dalit History Month edit-a-thons are coming in April!
  • Women's Human Rights Defenders: In partnership with Urgent Action Fund, we'll be supporting a group of women's human rights defenders around the world with more mapping and wiki content creation. Themes and geographies coming soon!
  • Kumeyaay Wikipedia Initiative: Following the 2016 Indigenous People's Day edit-a-thon, we're continuing to work with members of the Kumeyaay tribe in Southern California and Baja to map and contribute indigenous knowledge to Wikimedia projects. A discussion day with Kumeyaay community in San Diego is being planned for May.

3. Funding

We've got financial support for 2017!

  • WMF grant: 6-month funding (February-July 2017) was approved to pilot our approach to mapping knowledge and creating Wikipedia content with the Dalit community and global women's human rights defenders. Thanks for all your endorsements!
  • Shuttleworth Fellowship: Anasuya is a Shuttleworth Fellow! This means we'll be able to spend more time organizing, and have support for convenings, campaign infrastructure, etc.

4. Wikimedia Strategy

Find us at Wikimedia Conference.

  • Anasuya and Siko will be carrying the Whose Knowledge? vision of diversity, pluralism and representation of marginalized communities into movement strategy conversations in Berlin March 2017.
  • What's your vision for the Wikimedia movement? If you have a perspective that you'd like us to help represent in Berlin, please reach out and let us know!

In solidarity,

Siko (talk) 01:53, 8 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Social[edit]

Your proposal Grants:Learning patterns/Using 'Share a fact' to engage social media followers of small Wikipedias is inspiring and would help in reaching out to the people using social media. I appreciate it. More of such features need to be developed systematically. In fact you are already translating into action what I have proposed in my idea Grants:IdeaLab/Wiki Loves Social. Can you help in improving upon it by contributing specifics of how this could be achieved? You could also help by spreading the word and by getting people to endorse the idea. Seeking your participation. DiptanshuTalk 17:11, 23 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Netherlands and the World Exchange Platform is online[edit]

Dear Saileshpat,

In the past you've expressed interest in the project Netherlands and the World. We would like to draw your attention to the launch of the Netherlands and the World Exchange Platform. Please find more details below:

Wikimedia Nederland launches the Netherlands and the World Exchange Platform. The platform aims to stimulate global re-use of Dutch collections on non-European cultural heritage. In particular, it aims to stimulate collections on countries with which the Netherlands have had historical ties. These countries include Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Ghana, Suriname, South Africa, and others.

The platform also aims to foster contacts between Dutch cultural heritage institutions and Wikimedia contributors across the globe. However, participation is not limited to Wikimedia contributors. Anyone can participate, making it relevant for education and research as well.

Key properties:

  • Dutch heritage institutions can post offers on (parts of) their collections that are relevant to non-European countries
  • Wikimedia contributors gain insight in the contents of Dutch collections and can make requests for digitalisation.
  • Knowledge exchange and cooperation are key concepts.

The platform is easy to use. After registration, users can post offer/requests notices, depending on whether they are looking for material, or want to offer material for re-use. Statistics on re-use are also available.

The Netherlands and the World Exchange Platform is part of the program The Netherlands and the World. This program is supported by Wikimedia Nederland and aims to make available knowledge and content on non-European countries.

Thanks for your participation during the Inspire Campaign focused on outreach to outside knowledge networks from February 2017. I'm interested in hearing your experience during the campaign, so if you're able, I invite you to complete this brief survey to describe how you contributed to the campaign and how you felt about participating. I want to improve how campaigns are run, so let me know if there's something that could be done better for next time.

Please feel free to let me know on my talk page if you have any questions about the campaign or the survey. Thanks! I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 18:34, 31 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Feedback Netherlands the World Exchange Platform requested[edit]

Dear Saileshpat,

In the past, you've expressed an interest in the project The Netherlands and the World. As part of the project, the Netherlands and the World Exchange Platform went online in April 2017. A few months later, we would now like to collect some feedback on the platform:

  • If you’ve signed up on the platform but never got around to using it, or if you looked at the platform but didn’t sign up, we would like to hear about that.
  • If you’ve never heard of the Netherlands and the World Exchange Platform before, we would like to hear about that too.
  • In general, we are also interested to get feedback about the platform itself. So, whether you’ve already had a look at it, or just learned about it from this email, we would appreciate it if you would take a few minutes to browse the website and share with us your thoughts on its purpose, the available functionality, the layout, things that you’re missing that should be there, suggestions, etc.

Feel free to share your thoughts on my talk page, this mailing list or email me directly if you don’t want to share your thoughts in public. Your feedback will be invaluable to help us decide how to move forward with the Netherlands and the World Exchange Platform.

Thank you!

Wikipedia Library User Group is being renamed![edit]

Hello! In the past few months, the Wikipedia Library User Group has been undergoing some major planning and developments. We just finished our very first open call with the user group members, which was a great success (see the meeting minutes). If you joined us during the meeting, we’d like to thank you for your interest. If not, not to worry, we have lots of things planned for the user group in which you can participate.

This message is to inform you that based on the input received from the user group members and the founding members, it was agreed that the Wikipedia Library User Group’s name be reconsidered by a voting process. As a valued member of the user group, we’d like to invite you to vote on the list of potential names. You can vote by following this link. The poll will run for a timeframe of two weeks.
