Agenda
[edit]- New Wikibase.Cloud status/incident tracker site
- Status of bids for WBUG-related open call funding
- Wikibase Community on Mastodon
- https://wikis.world/@WikibaseCommunity - now community-operated
- https://wikis.world/@Wikibase - the new WMDE
- What are you doing with Wikibase?
- Feel free to introduce yourself if new.
- Ismael: :The Very Small GLAM initiative (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Very_Small_GLAM)
- Read Me files naming
- Example Directory / Wikibase Suite Deployment Kit (Wikibase Suite Image Collection?)
- axed "suite", maybe template vs kit (assumption that it's a logical starting point)
- relates to extension/CSS/JS/gadget convo
- Docker Images / Wikibase Suite Service Images
- macro: not all images are equally appealing on their own (e.g. WDQS is more standalone, albeit without the customisation that some have done)
- Ismael Olea says: In any case, please rename the github project name from wikibase-release-pipeline to something more attractive 😃
- Example Directory / Wikibase Suite Deployment Kit (Wikibase Suite Image Collection?)
Notes
[edit]- There has been no news on the proposals other than that there should be news this week (though this is like the last two weeks...)
- Manual edits and QuickStatements, tried to use EntitySchema and Cradle, but qualifiers and references are needed so had to abandon using Cradle
- Student in ancient Greek, waiting for others to join and add data (2x-3x needed for "complete" database) -- haven't used verify or OpenRefine, mostly draft in Excel and export to TXT with substitutions and then QS, works well but found a bug reported in the Telegram group, blocking another wikibase to edit a lot of string values, though it can't remove refs and qualifiers.
- Camillo requests CSS and JS scripts in their accounts on Wikibase.cloud, and also MediaWiki:Common.js (MediaWiki:Common.css/JSON is already available)
- user.js: executes locally, might be low hanging fruit and not raise security concerns
- gadgets provide sitewide css/js... this may come w larger (security) issues
- ex. Cradle-like hack to use constraints from WD into local script.
- creates indiv user risks but not service or sitewide level issues.
- Lua is possible but doesn't solve a lot of common issues. it's more designed for content generation.
- Architecture issues with cloud have forced deprioritization of the issue - it's a different issue to scale one large instance vs. a lot of smaller issues
- Perhaps the user script wouldn't need to be customizable per-wiki either, and perhaps there could be a system where your user script from e.g. meta would be automatically enabled for you on all wikis including Cloud
- meta.wikibase.cloud?
- The Very Small GLAM initiative
- promoted by LaOficina, a cultural ONG in Spain;
- initiative for very small teams, 5-6 people, focus in to low entry barriers for IT museology adoption;
- in practice, we have conceived something like a meta package of Wikibase Suite to include an OS solution which includes data preservation.
- We are prototyping with themselves to set up a digital archive of cinema history production in the province of Almería (Spain), eating own dogfood.
- Required to use it locally because Wikibase.cloud does not host media and may not be free content or have any rights to republish.
- 2000 eur grant from WMF for assistance, expected to conclude 1 August.
- Future ambition is to package all essential knowledge to perform activities for GLAM, how to conserve and catalog items. All this info is out there but no body of knowledge in the open. (Asked about open-sourcing the SPECTRUM standard from the UK and they said no.)
- Another project workpackage is on ontologies Wikibase configuration: "the white/blank page fear", got to set up properties but where to start? Trying to find the most relevant ontology CIDOC CRM - has increasing adoption.
- Probably makes sense to map the full ontology with a Wikidata new property but unsure how easy it will be, not everything is as trivial as expected. Need to work with subset of CIDOC, archiving standard recent version had ontology in SW format. Equivalent modelling of CIDOC. Need to define some bits that don't fit into the original archiving model and include thesaurus art/architecture, prelude, work ASAP.
- Defined basic ontology happy to find colleague in WM Spain one of the proposers of the shape expression standard, and someone doing the same thing with the Luxembourg archive w.r.t. CIDOC, confirming basis of action.
- Trying to identify European funding calls to feed through to us and goals of initiative. Hopefully in near future can make a call to set up a consortium to answer such calls.
- Hoping to launch an example directory as a core product, run this instance and get it working out of the box, separate code/config/data clearly, rather than have updates destroy your past configuration.
