Identify knowledge or skill bottlenecks
last updated: 28 September 2018
In many projects of the Wikiverse, there are single or very small groups of users which are the only ones to possess a required knowledge or skill. This is most obvious for skills such as operation of a bot, fixing and creating templates or adjusting editing filters. Non-technical skills are e.g. the creation of maps or diagrams. This is problematic for at least two distinct reasons: On the one hand, it places pressure on these users to continue providing their knowledge or skill to their community which can quickly become a burden. On the other hand, when these users are absent temporarily or leave permanently, vital parts or workflows of the project cease to function. This is again most obvious when e.g. a vital bot stops working, but is true for all other knowledge and skill bottlenecks....

Identify potential collaborators-group via past articles and contributions
last updated: 27 September 2018
This idea is about getting crossed information about contributors about their centers of interest via the pages they wrote or contributed to, then propose a group of potential users ("group") sharing the same interest they could join or be notified about ("social media functionnality") (same pages written and contributed) to make they talk, exchange and work on some collaborative project: i.e: "you are interested in old cars articles ? let us create, document, or translate a page about old cars pages together"...

Upgraded Blocked User Reinstatement System
last updated: 15 September 2018
There should be a specific system in place to guide users through the unblocking process. The closest thing to this is the standard offer, but it is far from perfect. Instead of vague blocks with an "indefinite" expiration, there should be specific protocols in place to determine whether a user should be unblocked, and the user should be made knowledgeable of how those protocols work so that they can best understand how to facilitate their reinstatement....

Reminders to know when you need to stop and take a rest
last updated: 06 September 2018
In the Spanish Wikipedia exists a description of a number of symptoms, commonly known as "Wikipedia disease", a set of behaviors linked to particularly lengthy sessions of Wikipedia editing. You and I have found ourselves at 3 AM editing and finding an appropriate source, finishing a hard work session behind a category, maybe trying to have the last argument on a discussion... What is the maximum healthy amount of work that an average person can perform, according to scientific evidence? How many edits were made by a burned-out person, with warped perceptions of reality due to fatigue, loneliness, isolation, or the simple need for Wikipedia to be the only thing in the world? What happens if, with the help of experts, we can design an add-on that can remind Wikipedians about basic necessities like resting, going around, looking at something other than the screen, drinking water, sleeping, or getting out to real world? This could be based on the calculation of bytes added, on the session length, on the days and hours that the person has been sitting down editing? A series of messages could make a difference....

Editor rescue
last updated: 05 September 2018
When an editor is blocked or banned, every effort should be made to 'rescue' them and allow them to contribute. We could call it the editor rescue squad or something similar. We abandon many editors once they have experienced a block or ban and assume that they are not open to change and improvement. On the English Wikipedia, we should have a safe, non judgmental space where experienced and kind-hearted editors will help those blocked or banned to recover from their blocks or bans and help them develop the editing skills they will need to move on and become productive once again. Since this would be a safe space, I do not think that it should be viewable by anyone who has been involved in the block or ban for the editors....

Check how many edits done by users are deleted and how many old users are "guarding" articles from any change, or deleting new stuff added by unlogged users
last updated: 10 August 2018
Wikipedia should study the fact that nearly EVERY edit done by IP is reverted. Those who have accounts (especially for a long time) wrongly believe that they own wikipedia - and they push out every other contributor, because they simply delete every edit. They often give ridiculous excuses to delete things (for examples: if they dont like the source, they delete the edit). If they are so interested in sources for stubs, maybe they should go and delete poorly sourced articles? Another problem is that if one even manages to edit an article, then you have to "guard" it forever, because your changes will be reverted in a week or two by people whose activity is just deleting stuff. Many of them even BOAST about how many items they deleted from the site: changes (often thousands) or articles (hundreds). This means that hundreds of people who tried to contribute were burned - and their contributions, discarded. This is very discouraging to try to do anything in this "community" - which in fact seems to be more of a clique of old timers, who seem to try to everything possible, to push away new people. After all, the old timers are "proven", while in reality they did hundreds of reverts, or small changes - and most of true wikipedia was written by IPs....

You Are Fake News
last updated: 07 August 2018
Stop allowing "established editors" to incorporate PEJORATIVES into the personal bios of individuals with "protected" pages; it doesn't belong on Wikipedia and it discredits you entirely. If you're going to lock editors out of making page edits, AT LEAST provide a reporting method that can be used repeatedly until the attention of a reasonable, adult, critically-thinking editor can be acquired. If you're going to let people tag political figures they dislike with pejorative remarks, at least leave the page open to ALL editors. Otherwise, YOU ARE FAKE NEWS and this daily reader will stop using (or promoting) your service. In the past, I have repeatedly, aggressively defended Wikipedia as a reasonable source, due to enforcement of critical thinking standards and the ability to quickly correct erroneous content. Now, you're making me regret that defense. Your job is NOT to enforce critical thinking among political pundits! Your job is to enforce critical thinking standards in _your own_ content. You're no longer accomplishing that task, based on my recent observation....

Survey of hostile experiences among new editors
last updated: 07 August 2018
The basic idea of this proposal is to conduct a survey of people who recently started editing Wikipedia, and to ask them whether they felt that an experienced editor acted too rude or hostile to them as a result of the new editor's edits. Ideally, such a survey would include both IPs and logged-in users, as well as both currently active and non-active users. But it wouldn't include vandals, of course, as they deserve to be treated with hostility. The main point of this proposal is to see whether newcomers are actually being bitten (in violation of en:WP:BITE) on a regular basis, thereby discouraging prospective good-faith contributors from sticking around....

Make sysops a technical role, but for real
last updated: 06 August 2018
Wikimedia policies say that sysops have a merely a technical role, and they just enforce consensus. But reality is much different: many procedures (like Articles for deletion) involve last word decision-making by sysops; when they think consensus is obvious, sysops are allowed to "be bold" and decide themselves; and that's not simply "applying the rules", because differents sysops come out with different decisions. Even when real discussion takes place, it is not uncommon that the case is enterely or mainly decided by sysops (that's to say, the same one who will enforce the decision). Not even in the wild west it was allowed to the same person to be, at the same time, sheriff and judge. What Wikipedia lacks is a separation of powers: those who decide should always be sharply divided from those who enforce decisions. No exception allowed....

For me it is a system of incentive for editors to keep editing in Wikimedia or Wikipedia and expanding our universe of Amateur Editors and also Professional Editors that makes Wikimedia and Wikipedia a good place to gain knowledge....

We are the World
last updated: 24 July 2018
Build a healthy global pipeline of future Wikipedian by teaching and nurturing high potential young users across the world to be part of building out this important resource. Create a training curriculum and special learning center for future Wikipedians to build meaningful skills in small consumable lessons that are age appropriate. Consider making this into a classroom activity, perhaps scaled for various ages or grades. Ideally we should build a pipeline that extends to all corners of the world, not just to economically leading geographies. It could be as simple as just making some easier training for youth, or as sophisticated as a full blown global campaign to recruit and nurture the best student candidates of today into tomorrow's editorial powerhouse. Perhaps even consider setting levels like WP/EIT (editor in training), where we can signal to the mature editorial community that we are in gentle guidance mode with the intention of finding and growing a healthy pipeline of the next generation of editors....

The current Inspire Campaign is closed. You are welcome to continue providing feedback, revising ideas, and moving any ideas that need funding into grant applications. Be sure to review guidance to develop your idea further.
Outcomes
The Inspire Campaign on Measuring Community Health had several successful outcomes, including:
- Strong participation in a more technical and research-oriented campaign (over 100 submitted ideas, and more than 240 participants who endorsed, commented on, or proposed ideas)
- Contributors from over 35 different countries – including some emerging communities – had ideas to measure community health represented in this campaign.
- Direct support of participants through proposal-specific guidance and support on idea talk pages by Community Resources and Trust & Safety teams.
- Broader support offered to all Inspire Campaign and IdeaLab participants through the development and sharing of guidance on how to develop ideas into concrete plan for implementation.
Some progress so far on ideas from this campaign includes:
- Measure replacement rate among the admins: This idea to collect new statistics on admin replacement resulted in some mock-ups of an interface based on the idea. It was submitted for a Project Grant proposal in the current round.
- Reminders to know when you need to stop and take a rest There is interest in collaborative work on this idea and develop a pilot project to encourage contributors to rest after long or intensive periods of editing.
- Health rating radio button template on talk pages: This proposal on identifying contentious discussion pages prompted a community discussion on English Wikipedia.
- Identify knowledge or skill bottlenecks: The idea creator on this proposal to evaluate and summarize skill gaps within Wikimedia projects is interested in applying for a Rapid Grant at a later time.
- Email inactive (formerly active) users with a survey on inactivity reasons: There was also some community support and interest in further developing this idea to survey inactive contributors to assess reasons why they went inactive.
