question[edit]

Hello Bsadowski1, my name is Daniel DanIam. I'm kind of new to this *Wiki* concept. Bsadowski1, I have a question: Yesterday, I was browsing through and came upon a page in Wikimedi that was of interrest. See:

http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki_Ideal#Content_Management_Ideas

I noticed on that page that there was a link leading to:

http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tikiwiki

that needed some editing. Since I'm a volunteer with TikiWiki, I copied and pasted an intro page so that users can learn a bit about TikiWiki.

Unfortunately, it seems that the content I choose was innapropriate.

Bsadowski1, can I trouble you to give me an example of what kind of content would be appropriate, please?

Daniel.

Unban Pio[edit]

I am registered in simple en.wiki with account simple:user:Pio which was banned by admin user:M7; on Mon, May 10, 2010 at 16:55, I wrote this e-mail to project:

The name of my account is -Pio- and admin M7 banned me at 6 May with total false accusation several POV edits and vandalisms, already blocked on many wikies

1-I never was blocked neither just warned in simple en. for POV edits!!!!

2-I never was banned neither just blocked in any other wiki!!!!

3-obvious I never vandalized in any wiki!!!!

4-at 6 May I did edit only twice in article -Josip Broz Tito-!!!!

5-other user -LM- in my same situation was blocked for one week!!!!

6-admin M7 is obsessed by other person who used account -Pio- in it.wiki but I am not that same Pio: obvious I am different user!!!!

7-even my talk page was blocked and I cannot defend myself over there!!!!

Obvious I request to remove absurd ban against me; regards.

M7 answered with his personal address in this manner:

You _with the same email_ were already blocked on it.wiki and other wiki in 2008 and also wrote several times alleging your innocence...

Your abuse of multiple accounts dates back also on en.wiki, where you have been blocked hundreds of times. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:PIO&action=history

Thank you for your call, M7.

I consider this answer inappropriate because every language's section is indipendent and M7 has conflict of interest because also the same M7 banned my account. Now I request your intervention because this case must control of other admin with neutral point of view, regards.--Ducatista 09:31, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Closed project modification[edit]

Hello, I did not find an appropriate steward request page for changing pages in closed projects, so I turn to you directly. The Hungarian Wikinews has been closed on 15 May 2011, and since then it has been incubated. To ensure that visitors are given enough notice about the incubated version, please do the following:

The new main page has English information equivalent to Hungarian.

The current sitenotice says: "Bezár a magyar Wikihírek! A bezárás után az Inkubátorban (kezdőlap) lesz elérhető a tartalom. További részletek a közösségi portálon.", which means "The Hungarian Wikinews will close. The content will be made available on Incubator after the closure. Further information can be found on the Village Pump." The new one says: "Jelenleg a Wikihírek archív oldalait nézed. A szerkeszthető változat az Inkubátorban érhető el.", which means "You are currently browsing an archived version of Wikinews. There is an editable version available on Incubator."

If you would like to make these texts checked before implementing the changes, you can turn to a section of Village Pump on Hungarian Wikipedia in English; the people there will help. Unfortunately there is no steward with Hungarian knowledge as of now.

If you do not plan to implement these changes, please tell me so by sending a message. Thank you! - Xbspiro 21:54, 22 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

To keep in the pages of wiki Administrator's personnel thesis? at http://sd.wikipedia.org ? Other problem is We call Computer as same in English, but admin forcibly used his word Ganpukar of Computer. I have proof that thousands of published books called it Computer not Ganpukar. If some one oppose him he started abusive language. That is the reason sd.wikipedia.org never got attraction to Sindhi community. Plz check record there. Other things are he locked CSS due to that on the same site there are lot of font styles appeared there. He is not able to set commonCSS or Monocss. We are in trouble to work in our local Sindhi language. I don't know where to say for this problem. Record history says all the situation there. I appeal plz warn him to follow en.wikipedia.org rules, other wise he will continue use his personnel details and personnel promoted articles there. An image that is partially in focus, but mostly out of focus in varying degrees.

Please notice that I asked three questions of each candidate at Stewards/Elections 2013/Questions

  1. Do you look forward to being an active catalyst for consensus-building, especially in small wiki contexts?
  2. Do you see your role as a passive bystander with a few tools?
  3. Are you able to make balanced guesses about why, when and how "it is better not to reach than to go too far"?

As you know, you are identified as a steward at simple:Wikipedia:Administrators#List of Administrators. In this context, it is timely and meaningful to pose the same questions. --Ansei (talk) 19:02, 8 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

These questions are not a complaint. They are forward looking and open-ended. Is it not appropriate and useful to ask such questions from time to time? Is it not reasonable to ask experienced stewards the same kinds of questions which are presented to steward candidates? --Ansei (talk) 02:17, 9 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Morning277[edit]

Hi! The above editor is actually the master account of a large farm of sockpuppets/meatpuppets that represents http://www.wiki-pr.com, a large paid editing firm that has been editing the English Wikipedia for years with at least 1000 accounts. The SPI page is at w:en:Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Morning277, and my notes on the crosswiki editing are at User:Rschen7754/Reports/Morning277.

I am mentioning this because it appears that there are local edits on your home wiki, the Simple English Wikipedia, by either CU-confirmed or behaviorally confirmed accounts, that should be reviewed:

I have been told by the English Wikipedia CheckUsers that doing a CU has not always provided useful information, but if choose to do so and find any related accounts, we would appreciate the information. If you need CU data, User:WilliamH and User:Tiptoety have been working the cases at the English Wikipedia and at Commons, respectively.

Thanks!

Confusion over global block[edit]

My IP is 50.204.207.130 and apparently you banned me for "long term abuse." I haven't made any edits in years and any edits I did make in the past were to my personal profile page and a few small article edits. I would just like to know how this resembles "long term abuse" as I have not done any significant spamming or trolling nor have I disrupted the community in any way. I will admit that I did make a joke edit on a minor article 4 years ago, but it was deleted quickly and I never did it again. I don't really edit anymore and the block does only go into the next month so I suppose it's not really that important, but I am just confused.

IP Range Blocks[edit]

Globally block IP ranges 98.249.0.0/16 and 76.110.0.0/16 and 169.139.0.0/16 because of Endingsesame. Thing in the t (talk) 13:48, 2 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

Per your comment here, it is fairly clear why you thought almost all these accounts were spambots, from the names, but what stands out for me is how quickly you recognized the problem. As far as I've seen, the teacher did not announce anything on-wiki until after you had locked and unlocked. I first looked to see if you had taken checkuser permissions on Simple, and when you hadn't, I momentarily excluded that. Then the light bulk bulb went off, and, yes, you are a checkuser on that project. All these registrations, my guess, you found, were coming from a particular school, making it unlikely they were spambots. I found a clue at [1], but that was posted after this affair. I notice that the student who wrote that has a user name beginning with a number. It may be a convention there.

There were also ClasificadoR, Sboussard, and PlatinumCRuX, who did not have the suspicious names, AFAIK. Those may be teachers. ClasificadoR and PlatinumCRuX registered in the middle of a series of 19* names, but Sboussard did not. So there are some mysteries here. If you remember what happened, it might be useful. Otherwise, some things will never be explained. --Abd (talk) 23:34, 16 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It was private evidence (you know which tool though). I really can't explain further. Sorry for being a bit vague. --Bsadowski1 (talk) 01:44, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I got it; it's obvious what you *likely* saw. Not certain, of course. But this is close enough. If I'm correct, you concluded from the use of that tool that this was likely academic, which, of course, was rather quickly confirmed. It's probable -- though not certain -- that you corrected the locks so quickly that they weren't even noticed by the users. Thanks for communicating about this. --Abd (talk) 01:52, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That is correct. I immediately corrected my mistake after that. I also apologized to the project leader. --Bsadowski1 (talk) 02:39, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Bsadowski1. I updated your global.js page to the latest version of StewardScript. This is mainly to enable automatic updates, but it also includes a few fixes. If you notice any problems or have questions, let me know! :) —Pathoschild 04:09, 25 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Global CSS/JS migration[edit]

Hello Bsadowski1. You have a global.js page which contains your global scripts for all wikis. Since August 19th, your global.js and global.css pages are loaded automatically on all wikis (see announcement). Since you already load them yourself on some wikis, you may experience script errors or issues like tools being added twice. I can fix that for you by merging your local scripts and styles into your global pages, and deleting the local pages with synchbot. Do you want me to do that? —Pathoschild 23:34, 20 September 2014 (UTC)

Sure. That would be nice. --Bsadowski1 (talk) 03:33, 10 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

User:White Fennec[edit]

You locked this user, in 2011, for (Long-term abuse) See [CentralAuth] for the user. The user had 33 total edits, and 33 good edits on en.wikiversity, and no edits on any other wiki. Had we been aware of the lock, we would have requested unlock immediately. The user was blocked on en.wikipedia, also for long term abuse. The only activity on en.wiki was an automatic registration, which is the only way a Wikipedia checkuser would have seen the account. The user is believed to be in a third world country, and may have used a computer also used by a disruptive account, or, more likely, may have been attempting to contribute cleanly to Wikiversity, which we encourage.

The log of the sysop who blocked on enwiki confirms the connection with the controversy I've been researching: [2]. The en.wp user page claims White Fennec is a sock of User:Mmbmmmbm, known to be the namesake of wikiversity:en:Boubaker polynomials. That is a reasonable possibility. However, the SPI page for Mmbmmmbm does not show White Fennec.[3] If this is Boubaker, we very much want to encourage participation on Wikiversity, Boubaker is a heavily-published academic. Mmbmmbm is not locked. There is no global ban.

There was massive disruption in this affair, clearly a result of misunderstanding of Wikipedia policies and procedures, complicated by charges of racism, and complicated by counterattack using straw puppets ("false flag" accounts), it was a mess.

Wikiversity can provide a route where "team Boubaker," as it has been called, can create and cooperate with the community in improving educational resources on the topic of Boubaker polynomials. It is unfortunate that these people were not pointed to Wikiversity in the first place. We have no notability requirement, and original research is allowed (as it is at traditional universities).

The Wikiversity resource was dormant because the user active on it had been locked. We have begun cleaning it up, and I am find that there are many more reliable sources, of high quality, than were clearly shown there. (Team Boubaker was wiki-incompetent, they had weak sources prominently displayed, and very strong sources more or less hidden.) We will document all that, and then Wikipedians who wish to address the issue will have a great deal of research done for them, that they can verify.

Please unlock this account. Thanks. --Abd (talk) 16:47, 2 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It was confirmed that they were a sock of that user you specified. Not all socks are in SPI archive pages (this applies to many other sockmasters). Also do note I locked that account in 2011 when it was a crosswiki issue. I am not the sole steward who locked their accounts. Do you know if they plan on returning? They would have to appeal I'm afraid. If they get unblocked, I can consider (along with other stewards) the chance of them getting unlocked. Is that reasonable? --Bsadowski1 (talk) 18:37, 2 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
They are not banned globally. Yes, there were cross-wiki issues then, but this account was not being used cross-wiki. There were many users, apparently, involved, not just one. Many socks were identify by the duck test, and the test was an interest on Boubaker polynomials. However, I am finding many peer-reviewed papers in mainstream journals on the topic. Some have claimed this is a hoax. If so, they have deluded the largest scientific publishers in the world. Because I am inviting Boubaker himself to participate on en.wikiversity, I want to clean up possible charges of socking. I am advising him to stay away from other wikis, wherever an account of his might be blocked. But a global lock is not a ban, bans must be discussed, etc.
This request is about one account, that you locked. Not all the others. There was no multiple-account editing by this account, i.e., what we ordinarily call socking, in particular, block evasion. I have an idea what may have happened, but it doesn't matter. There is no claim that the lock was wrong or bad, only that it may have caused some harm, on en.wikiversity, where he was editing, and it is harmless to unlock it. If he acts up, it will be seen and reported, I'm sure. Thanks for looking into it. Either way, we can work around this. --Abd (talk) 20:34, 2 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

This is a message from the Wikimedia Foundation. Translations are available.

As you may know, the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees approved a new "Access to nonpublic information policy" on 25 April 2014 after a community consultation. The former policy has remained in place until the new policy could be implemented. That implementation work is now being done, and we are beginning the transition to the new policy.

An important part of that transition is helping volunteers like you sign the required confidentiality agreement. All Wikimedia volunteers with access to nonpublic information are required to sign this new agreement, and we have prepared some documentation to help you do so.

The Wikimedia Foundation is requiring that anyone with access to nonpublic information sign the new confidentiality agreement by 15 December 2015 (OTRS users have until 22 December 2015) to retain their access. You are receiving this email because you have access to nonpublic information and are required to sign the confidentiality agreement under the new policy.

Signing the confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information is conducted and tracked using Legalpad on Phabricator. The general confidentiality agreement is now ready, and the OTRS agreement will be ready after 22 September 2015. We have prepared a guide on Meta-Wiki to help you create your Phabricator account and sign the new agreement: Confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information/How to sign

If you have any questions or experience any problems while signing the new agreement, please visit this talk page or email me (gvarnum(_AT_)wikimedia.org). Again, please sign this confidentiality agreement by 15 December 2015 (OTRS users have until 22 December 2015) to retain your access to nonpublic information. If you do not wish to retain this access, please let me know and we will forward your request to the appropriate individuals.

Thank you,

Request[edit]

In this Discussion, Meta has advised me that: Just try to get unblocked your account. Why don't you ask help for that from Stewards?. Once again I am writing here. In addition, what should I do? Thanks in advance. --Idin Mammadof 17:03, 2 November 2015‎ ‎ (UTC)

This is a message from the Wikimedia Foundation. Translations are available.

I wanted to follow-up on an message I sent you in September regarding the need for you to sign a confidentiality agreement by 15 December 2015 (OTRS users have until 31 December 2015) in order to maintain your access from Wikimedia to nonpublic information.

As you may know, the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees approved a new "Access to nonpublic information policy" on 25 April 2014 after a community consultation. The former policy has remained in place until the new policy could be implemented. That implementation work is now being done, and we are transitioning to the new policy.

An important part of that transition is helping volunteers like you sign the required confidentiality agreement. All Wikimedia volunteers with access to nonpublic information are required to sign this new agreement, and we have prepared some documentation to help you do so.

Confirmation discussions[edit]

Dear Bsadowski1,

As you probably know, the confirmation discussions for Stewards have been closed. In order to determine the outcome of these discussions, you are invited to comment on Talk:Stewards/Confirm/2016 before scheduled closure of the confirmation section "one week after the appointment of the newly elected stewards" (Sunday 6th of March, 17:22 UTC), though the closing time might be extended at the ElectCom's discretion for an extra week if it is believed "further input is required before concluding". All stewards are welcome to comment, including those newly elected.

For those who ran for confirmation, consider revising comments regarding you, and replying to those where appropriate. Savhñ 08:01, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. No, it's not a range block with collateral damage. The Global user contributions tool only show the contributions that is not deleted. There is deleted contributions on a number of wikis that motivates a global block. -- Tegel (Talk) 12:08, 22 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

No renaming between November 20 and November 27[edit]

Hi,

You’re getting this because you’re a steward or global renamer. The Community Tech team are working on cross-wiki watchlists. We need to add a couple of fields to the localuser table in centralauth database. In order to be able to do this, we’d need to run a script that will get in the way of renaming users. Our apologies – we realize this is getting in the way of your work.

We ask that you do not rename anyone between 00:00 November 20 (UTC) and 00:00 November 27 (UTC).

(UTC means that if you live in the Americas, it will be on the evening or afternoon of November 19 when the script starts running, and if you live in Oceania or eastern Asia, it can be closer midday on November 27 before we can be sure the script is no longer running.)

Phabricator task.

If there are any problems related to this, or you have any questions, please write me on my talk page. /Johan (WMF) (talk) via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 19:39, 17 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Help design a new feature to stop harassing emails[edit]

Hi there,

The Anti-Harassment Tools team plans to start develop of a new feature to allow users to restrict emails from new accounts. This feature will allow an individual user to stop harassing emails from coming through the Special:EmailUser system from abusive sockpuppeting accounts.

We’re inviting you to join the discussion because you have experience dealing with abusive sockpuppeting accounts and you work across many wikis. We think that your insights will help us build a better feature.

You can leave comments on this discussion page or send an email to the Anti-Harassment Tools team.

It is important to hear from a broad range of people who are interested in the design of the tool, so we hope you join the discussion and let us know how it would work best for you.

Invitation to Blocking tools consultation[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation's Anti-Harassment Tools team is inviting all Wikimedians to discuss new blocking tools and improvements to existing blocking tools in December 2017 for development work in early 2018.

We are specifically contacting you for your ideas because you are one of the top users of the blocking tool on Meta. We think that your comments will help us make better improvements. You can post to the discussion in the language that you are most comfortable expressing your ideas.

Other ways that you can help[edit]

  1. Spread the word that the consultation is happening; this is an important discussion for making decisions about improving the blocking tools.
  2. Help with translation.
  3. If you know of current or previous discussions about blocking tools that happened on your wiki, share the links.
  4. Help summarize the discussion to share back to your wiki.

If you have questions you can contact me on wiki or send an email to the Anti-Harassment Tools team.

For the Anti-Harassment Tools team, SPoore (WMF), Community Advocate, Community health initiative (talk) 20:21, 18 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • I apologize for posting in English.
  • Please let us know if you wish to opt-out of all massmessage mailings from the Anti-harassment tools team.

Reminder about Blocking consultation[edit]

Hello again,

The discussion about new blocking tools and improvements to existing blocking tools is happening on meta now and is in the final days.

We contacted you because you are one of the top users of the blocking tool on this wiki. We think that your comments will help us make better improvements. There is still time to share your ideas. You can post to the discussion in any language.

Thank you if you have already shared your thoughts. You can also help out by sharing a link to the meta discussion with users on other wikis. Or you can translate the summary of the discussion and share it on another wiki.

Hi. I need a little bit of help. Please read[edit]

I'm sorry to bother you but I'm in a bit of a mess. I rarely get involved in Wikipedia stuff anymore because I have trouble navigating the many intricacies of it. I edit rarely but I read a lot! Recently I stumbled upon an oddity of 100s of Swiss accounts contributing with fairly benign edits being banned/blocked over a period of 5 years by a small group of users citing them as sockpuppets of one single person. It all seemed to so weird to me, that someone would spend so much time on this. That some single individual somewhere would create hundreds of accounts to make benign articles and contributions about the country without ever challenging their constant blocking...even the admins and checkusers doing the locking acknowledged that they couldn't make sense of it.

So in the interest of trying to make sense of it I tried to get everyone engaged to explain themselves and suggested that perhaps what was happening was that a bunch of people from some cultural institution in Switzerland are being payed to update articles about the countries constitution, research, hospitals, culture, etc and that maybe we should let them do it!

What followed was a barrage of threats, an indefinite blocking of my account and two and maybe soon three denied appeals without ever explaining to me what I did so terribly wrong to be excluded forever from Wikipedia. So please I don't know where else to turn, all the admins I've contacted seem to be backing each other up but I've really tried to stay civil and I don't know what I am doing wrong. Please help. Thanks. You can see the events in my log on the English Wikipedia. The little ferry (talk) 00:08, 19 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Oversight needed[edit]

Please get in contact with the owner of this account, have him change his password, remove the IP/password from his en.wikipedia user page, and oversight any and all revisions with it. Help[edit]

Hello. First of all I'm sorry if the sentences written by me in English are not very coherent. It's because I'm using an automatic translator! I came across an improper use of that user's PU and would like to propose deletion, however I'm being blocked by an edit filter. As I am a more active editor on the Lusophone Wikipedia, I do not quite understand how things work here. On those days I will be monitoring the recent changes, which is the activity that I like to do most! How can I resolve this problem with the filter? --Editor D.S (talk) 23:49, 12 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Bsadowski1. We've had a discussion here about a Wikivoyage Bureaucrat who has been completely inactive on Wikivoyage for over 5 years. We think it's important to remove the Bureaucrat tools from those accounts, to guard against the possibility of malicious hacking. The user in question:

User:Hansm

His last contribution to Wikivoyage was on 21 February 2013.

I thank you for taking care of some cross-Wiki vandalism on Wikivoyage, and if you do have a chance to remove Hansm's Bureaucrat tools, I invite you to post about that on the Wikivoyage talk page I linked above.
