Protect Tech/Server switch 2017 and its translations tomorrow

Hello all. There's been some vandalism on that page two weeks ago, and we need the information to be reliable while the editing outage occurs, as all the various announcements, warnings, reminders etc. point there. So can someone please (semi?)protect that page and its translations on May 3rd shortly before 14:00 UTC, for like, 1 hour only? TYVM! Elitre (WMF) (talk) 07:37, 2 May 2017 (UTC)

@Elitre (WMF): Maybe you are around at that time and able to do ityourself ?

1) Semi-protect the page.
2) Add the following to MediaWiki:Titleblacklist:

 # protect Tech/Server switch 2017
 (Translations:Tech\/Server_switch_2017|Tech\/Server_switch_2017)\/.* <noedit|autoconfirmed|errmsg=Semiprotectedpagewarning>

--Steinsplitter (talk) 12:58, 2 May 2017 (UTC)

I am not a big fan of using such rights when not in an emergency situation, but I can certainly do it. Thanks for pointing to the procedure. I'm assuming I need to revert the blacklist edit as soon as there's no need for the block to be in place anymore. Best, Elitre (WMF) (talk) 13:23, 2 May 2017 (UTC)
@Elitre (WMF): Something to consider is whether for certain types of pages or announcements whether there are certain naming or locating of pages that we can undertake and then build abuse filters that will just shut out IPs and non-autoconfirmed, username string or other more nuanced protection, eg. based on user group membership. Even having permanent filters in which titles enter and disappear can be of value. I would happily propose/support a request to have abusefilter rights able to be separately assigned to a group "Abuse filter editors" into which admins and crats make the assignation.

We know that we have the f/wits who just want to vandalise prominent pages, and we simply just need to make that more difficult for the trolls.  — billinghurst sDrewth 06:25, 3 May 2017 (UTC)

I think the procedure above is more than enough for our purposes, but of course, feel free to continue a related conversation if you disagree. I will mention this comment in our internal retrospective on the server switch though, in case other WMF colleagues have different needs from mine. Elitre (WMF) (talk) 09:49, 3 May 2017 (UTC)

Edit request on Mediawiki:Common.js

Hi!

Sorry if this is the wrong page to ask for this, I'm not totally used to metawiki request pages.

Currently, in some situations, a javascript error is raised in Mediawiki:Common.js: TypeError: $.client is undefined. To fix this, is it possible to edit this page to replace this :

	/**
	 * IE fixes as required
	 * (includes hlist fixup for IE)
	 */
	if ( $.client.profile().name === 'msie' ) {
	    mw.loader.load( '//meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Common.js/IEFixes.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript' );
	}

by this code :

	/**
	 * IE fixes as required
	 * (includes hlist fixup for IE)
	 */
	mw.loader.using( 'jquery.client', function() {
	    if ( $.client.profile().name === 'msie' ) {
	        mw.loader.load( '//meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Common.js/IEFixes.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript' );
	    }
	} );

This change will ensure that $.client is available and ready before using it.

GR request abuse

Hi. There is an abuse from user Salmam Khan requesting a global rename. Generally a global lock stops this kind of disruptive behavior. However, I'm not sure that an account blocked in only one project can be locked globally. Bearing in mind that a GR request take place in Meta, I think a local block can stops him. Regards, Jmvkrecords (Intra talk) 05:56, 6 May 2017 (UTC).

Could you describe what is behind that link for people who do not have global rename access, please? By stop you mean that he repeatedly creates new account rename requests? --Base (talk) 21:56, 6 May 2017 (UTC)
Yes, it means that this user repeatedly creates vandalic requests asking for rename his account. Multiple global renamers have been rejected all these request. Maybe @Litlok:, and @Céréales Killer: can confirm this information, Jmvkrecords (Intra talk) 03:32, 7 May 2017 (UTC).

I ask to block Al islam 3333 too. Same user, same problem. I mention too @Savh:, and @Linedwell:, Jmvkrecords (Intra talk) 04:35, 7 May 2017 (UTC).

Hi, for future case of "spam renaming request" we should establish a rule to decide what to do, or ask the developers to add an option to the Global Rename tool to "ignore" (on the same base of a block) request from an user for a defined period. In the case of those 2 users (banned on their homewiki for massive sockpuppetry) I have locked both of them. Regards, Linedwell [talk] 05:10, 7 May 2017 (UTC)
(edit) RadiX was faster for Al islam 3333, thanks to him. Linedwell [talk] 05:10, 7 May 2017 (UTC)
Thank you Linedwell. There is an open task for this kind of cases, but I think it is not ready now, and it won't be ready in a near future. I agree with you that we need to establish "a rule to decide what to do". Thank you again, and best regards, Jmvkrecords (Intra talk) 05:50, 7 May 2017 (UTC).
@Jmvkrecords: there are also numerous requests by Yunoselect with different sockpuppets accounts but this case was handled by Ajraddatz. Litlok (talk) 13:36, 7 May 2017 (UTC)

Was soft-blocked on the en.wiki because he shared a name with a Turkish journalist who was punished by the regime. He has since moved to here and is editing on that 2017 ban. I cannot find a UAA equivalent here, but I assume the username policies remain the same. Thanks L3X1 (talk) 01:38, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

Username policy is not the same. Are the edits of the individual problematic?  — billinghurst sDrewth 02:38, 18 May 2017 (UTC)
Sorry for by bad assumption. The edits are not problematic. Thanks, L3X1 (talk) 02:45, 18 May 2017 (UTC)
@L3X1: no issue. We need to be a little more robust with such matters on wikis, like meta, that are not pure content. There will always be a different type of grandstanding here, and as long as it is not problematic we try to exercise a different approach. Noting that being blocked on another wiki often affects how an account is viewed, or even if it is used.  — billinghurst sDrewth 10:41, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

I believe this is outside my remit as a limited administrator, so I will request that someone else do it (or at least give me permission to go ahead):

Right now, toward the bottom of the page, we have the following (links removed):

Local Administrators
Add and remove the translation administrator and the flood flag from themselves. Please remember to remove the flood flag when you are finished.

I propose adding as follows:

Local Administrators
Add and remove the translation administrator and the flood flag from themselves. Please remember to remove the flood flag when you are finished.
  • Best practice: Always add the flood flag for a limited time, based on your estimate of how long you think you will need it.

Please make that change, or tell me I can go ahead. StevenJ81 (talk) 19:07, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

Mass Message sender right

I would need the MassMessage sender flag to send massive messages. The messages that I will send concern various fields, particularly regarding global communications to inform the various global events / decisions communities (for example User:Samuele2002/Sandbox/7), messages about only the wikiversity project to be sent to the various communities so that they can notify you about project decisions (such as the proposal Editing the Wikiversity logo and resuming the beta.Wikiversity closing proposal). Extension Notice: Translate and to alert language specialists strategy coordinator as there is a need for an urgent translation (for example, an added successor to you and needing translations) (example User:Samuele2002/Sandbox/6). Also, I would send a message to users marked in a list to receive updates about Wikiversity news (please note: this is only a proposal before creating the page with the list I have to discuss the opportunity in the various beginnings of Wikiversity). I know this feature and I use it, I'm administrator in various projects including (It.Wikiversity beta.Wikiversity Wikimania2017 outreach.Wikimedia test.Wikipedia test2.Wikipedia test.wikidata). Thanks and regards --Samuele2002 (Talk!) 20:58, 19 May 2017 (UTC)

I do not see that it is within the control of meta admins to give to you, by your request alone, a platform to take a political position on multiple wikis using massmessage. If you wish to do that, please utilise your account, time and your editing skills. Alternatively seek a mandate to undertake those political activities through a request for comment.  — billinghurst sDrewth 04:27, 20 May 2017 (UTC)

Propose removal of massmessage rights where need is no longer apparent

I propose that we remove the massmessage rights from the following users who would no longer would appear to be using the right, and are not active on meta. Each user is being pinged and able to ask to retain the right. The rights would be removed without prejudice and able to be returned upon request.

Edit being flagged as Spam

Hi. I am trying to edit this page https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:New_Readers/Offline and it says "Warning! — Your edit has been automatically identified as being spam or advertising. Please note that such edits are not allowed on any Wikimedia project. Users that engage in such behaviour will have their editing privileges removed. If you believe that the edit you wanted to make was constructive, we sincerely apologize. You may click the Submit button again to confirm it. A brief description of the rule which your action matched is: «Antispam». Feel free to report false positives to our administrators' noticeboard."

This is the additional I am trying to add:

Feedback 4

  • It's good how offline articles appear in exactly the same format and presentation as when they were online
  • I like the simplicity of saving a single page at a time and I think that would be the most common use-case. The idea in Feedback 3 of saving a whole set of pages / targets on the current page, seems more like a power user feature. It could add clutter to the UI and if it was automatic, it could use a lot of data.
  • Using iconography can be difficult - it's not clear whether the bookmark or the star icon is the one to save an article for reading offline
  • An "Update all" feature could be useful, to re-sync all the pages you have saved offline

Massmessage sender right

I need that right to send some messages (like ITM being approved User group) to some affected persons or may be severely affected (in Italian, rarely in other languages, when I need). ITM is not the only field of application, there may be others but will restrict to a minimum the lists the number of people who do not have expressly made known to me the consensus and these can always remove yourself. It would simplify a lot of work and would allow more people to stay up to date on what interests them directly on their Wiki of origin. An example: update on the status of a grant they were interested in, on the development of a tool, and so on urgent alerts. etc.--Ferdi2005 (Posta) 18:24, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

@Ferdi2005: I would prefer to see a specified list of groups where you are preparing to utilise massmessage, rather than a general listing of what you might do. Will your sending be to lists that are opt-in only, or would you be looking to create your own send lists? Would you also please identify any advanced rights that you have and where. Thanks. 01:18, 17 May 2017 (UTC)
@Billinghurst: Hi, I want to send only opt-in list, but in some cases I could insert some member putting the key opt-out. I can not provide a precise list because I might change as needed. I'm a sysop on It.wikinews.--Ferdi2005 (Posta) 13:28, 17 May 2017 (UTC)
Done Granted for 1 year to expire on 2018-05-18. for opt-in distribution lists I am reasonably comfortable, though would like to see this restricted to opt-in mailing lists, noting that opt-in can be where people ask to be added. If you wish to change the provision of the right granting, please look to leave another note here, with a link to this discussion (either archives or permalink). Granting right for a year, which should be able to be continued with a simple note here requesting right.  — billinghurst sDrewth 10:35, 18 May 2017 (UTC)
Thanks! See you in 2018--Ferdi2005 (Posta) 12:28, 18 May 2017 (UTC)
Can I also mean for opt-in an input board made MANUALLY (and I repeat, manually) to a user or to an entire village pump then agree to sign up?--Ferdi2005 (Posta) 13:28, 18 May 2017 (UTC)
If someone indicates that they wish to be on the list, and you add them, I would consider that opt-in.  — billinghurst sDrewth 13:41, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

Response to 2017 ban in Turkey/Sig

I've semi-protected Response to 2017 ban in Turkey/Sig. Current situation of thousands of italian signatures, and many per second, from unregistered contributors, makes me think some kind of bot or zombie network is operating on the page. If this is because the campaign is being advertised in Italy currently and that behaviour can be justified then feel free to lift the protection. CC. @Jalexander:. —MarcoAurelio 11:03, 9 May 2017 (UTC)

Apparently a sitenotice on itwiki + other places is the responsible of this. Lifted the edit protection but left the move protection just in case. —MarcoAurelio 11:15, 9 May 2017 (UTC)

Just wanted to bring some more attention to this because I don't think it's correct for this user to be doing this. On the signature page, Miloo.amila (talk · contribs) has been progressively removing signatures, sometimes in large chunks. The user did not explain any of the removals with an edit summary and in a couple of instances it looks like they just have not been handling edit conflicts properly and have saved over others. I am concerned it would be tricky to re-add the signatures, because the removals are spread out over about 40 separate edits. But if they had no right to be removed, they should be re-added. Seb26 (talk) 17:26, 19 May 2017 (UTC)

Admins can assist with the improper behaviour. With regard to the removals, then someone with interest should probably fix it. It shouldn't be considered a task for administrators.  — billinghurst sDrewth 03:17, 20 May 2017 (UTC)

billinghurst I'm very sorry. I was trying to create a link with my name and copying and pasting I dubbed some names and so after I noticed I deleted them,I thought I had canceled duplicates. I'm very sorry for the fact. Seb26 explained that I can use preview.

Duplicate signatures did you put them in?

@Chicocvenancio: I would have an expectation that you should be able to initially address your concerns to the user at their talk page. It seems premature to come to admins for intervention at this stage for that sort of highlighted edited. There is a level of resilience and self-sufficiency that is expected of users.  — billinghurst sDrewth 08:40, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
I understand that, billinghurst. This has not been the first interaction of the type by Antero, by far. I did try to talk to the user for the first 10 or so. Most of these were over at ptwiki, where he would be so blunt in suggesting I'm insane, but for Meta interactions you can look at his intervention over at my request to volunteer at OTRS.
