Your bot's edit on SRGP[edit]

Hello. I've looked your bot's edit on SRGP and didn't archive the full discussion of the -jkb-'s request. Is a bug? or can you fix it? --Ks-M9 [disc.] 02:56, 30 January 2017 (UTC).[reply]

Mismatch, in general the bot isn't archiving the section. --Steinsplitter (talk) 12:31, 30 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

SteinsplitterBot[edit]

Dear Steinsplitter, ich habe ein frage, its written on some places, that your bot SteinsplitterBot which measures patrol backlog at Wikispecies and Swedish Wikivoyage, is not working anymore? Is this true, and should I remove it, or is there plan to reactivate? Best regards, Dan Koehl (talk) 15:19, 13 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo Steinsplitter! Danke und Gruß, --Gnom (talk) Let's make Wikipedia green! 00:08, 15 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

abuse rule: Emoji limits[edit]

Hallo,

Hi Steinsplitter. In the hunt for overall condition limit hits, ran across global filter 107 last updated by former steward Barras. It has only had 1 hit in 16 months and consumes 2 conditions. I recommend disabling it. Thank you, — xaosflux Talk 15:39, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Sounds reasonable. Editing is stew restricted, maybe @Barras and MarcoAurelio: can disable it. --Steinsplitter (talk) 15:51, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, sorry didn't look up your flags first :D. Barras is no longer a steward, MarcoAurelio? — xaosflux Talk 15:59, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Done. While initaly totally opposed, maybe we need two local groups at Meta: one to allow some people to edit local edit filters and another one granting the extra ability to edit the global rules as well. I'm still rather opposed as bad filter syntaxes can cause a big mess, but on the other hand we're loosing the experience from some experts like you or MusikAnimal. What a dilema :-) —MarcoAurelio (talk) 11:02, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
We're both abuse filter helpers, but that gives us read-only rights. Looks like global abuse filter editors was a thing, not sure why it was removed. Maybe we should revisit the idea? I occasionally assist other wikis with filter improvements, especially now that we have a slow filter dashboard, that few of us have access to (since it contains private information like IPs, etc). It would be neat to not have to go in circles relaying information I see on the dashboard, essentially trial and error process until I see the filter is no longer slowing things down. — MusikAnimal talk 18:11, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I've started a discussion at Meta:Babel#Restoring global abuse filter editor group. — MusikAnimal talk 18:38, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Abusefilter on WS[edit]

Dear Steinsplitter, for your information, I "discovered" abusefilter on Wikispecies a couple of days ago, and today the Mediawiki instruction page, and imported a couple of configurations from Commons, just to try it out. I Have also noticed all admins on WS, so they can engage in this toll, which by all means looks useful. Dan Koehl (talk) 00:09, 13 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

2017/2018 mixed in SRAT[edit]

Meow. I see that your bot on Steward requests/Permissions/Approved temporary is mixing 2017 and 2018 requests. Could those please moved back to the top and be left there for the next archive rounds? Yes, I know I should be reviewing those. I plan to do that shortly but if the bot keeps moving them up and down it's a bit difficult :-) I am also thinking on disbanding the page (although we should maybe wait until expiring global userrights are avalaible). I am also wondering if the bot could fetch the data and mark the requests as removed or expired itself? That'd save me a lot of redundant and boring work. Best regards, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 11:28, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Move to the top. If the page is getting disbanded soon, it makes imho no sense to add new features to the script. Best --Steinsplitter (talk) 13:22, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
"Disbanding soon" is not something I'd say. As things stand now, it is likely the page will last for some more time, so if you want, you can implement those new functions. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 22:17, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Global preferences ready for testing[edit]

Greetings,

I am contacting you because of your support for Global settings in the 2016 Community Tech Wishlist. Global preferences are now available for beta testing, and need your help before being released to the wikis.

  1. Read over the help page, it is brief and has screenshots
  2. Login or register an account on Beta English Wikipedia
  3. Visit Global Preferences and try enabling and disabling some settings
  4. Visit some other language and project test wikis such as English Wikivoyage, German Wiktionary, the Hebrew Wikipedia and test the settings
  5. Report your findings, experience, bugs, and other observations

Once the team has feedback on design issues, bugs, and other things that might need worked out, the problems will be addressed and global preferences will be sent to the wikis.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks! Keegan (WMF) (talk) 22:07, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Idea for Steinsplitterbot update[edit]

Hello. I wanted to tell you my idea on how your Steinsplitterbot could be better. Right now, it splits Steward_requests/Global into monthly archives, like Steward_requests/Global/2018-03, but this page is seriously big (nearly 400000 bytes). That's very tough to load, so can it be possible your bot would split pages to smaller sections? Like two weeks, or one week? For example, it would split April requests to two pages. One that has posts from 1.4 to 15.4, and one that has 16.4 to 30.4? I know it may be difficult to find a way to program smaller archives, but this will be needed eventually, as pages get bigger. Would such a feature be possible? Thank you. CuteLittleGuy (talk) 17:46, 2 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Bot flag on w:mr[edit]

Hello,

I am a 'crat on w:mr. I saw a request for bot flag from you for account w:mr:User:Steinsplitterbot. The request didn't have a lot of details (this could be because of the way request page is structured in Marathi.)

Can you add the following there -

  • Link to your user page (meta or home project)
  • Automated/supervised/manual
  • Programming language(s)
  • What kind of edits will this bot make
  • List of other projects where this account (steinsplitterbot) has a bot flag

Thanks.

Bot[edit]

Archival anomaly[edit]

Look at Contributions/SteinsplitterBot. Wee see how several requests disappear from Steward requests/Username changes in early hours of March 3, 2017, but I’m unable to find where did they land. Will you investigate this case or it is up to me, again? Incnis Mrsi (talk) 05:01, 1 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for calling attention to the aforemenoined issue regarding automated archiving. The requests have been added to the archive. Unfortunately, i am not able to reproduce the error because the logs for the the affected accounts are missing in my system. I suspect there was some kind of internal and temporary disruption. @MarcoAurelio: Hi, Does the problem with the duplication still exists? I owe you an apology for the delay. Best --Steinsplitter (talk) 14:27, 1 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Double archival?[edit]

Hi Steinsplitter. I looked at the archive page of SRG from April 2018 and I noticed two requests were double archived so I removed them. But when I look more closely I noticed many more requests that are double archived... Any idea how that could happen? And is there a possibility to remove the duplications with a bot account? Trijnsteltalk 13:06, 2 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Trijnstel: It happened only in April or did you saw it somewhere else as well? --Steinsplitter (talk) 13:27, 2 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know, I just now noticed it and I'm trying to clean up the archive page as it's pretty hard to find old requests when it's added x times. BTW, it happened in May as well as I now notice (see the two duplicates above eachother). Another thing that I noticed (unrelated to this) is that global rollback requests on SRGP aren't archived by your bot. I recently archived them manually, but I know it happened before as well. Were you aware of that? Trijnsteltalk 13:35, 2 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
And what I also don't get: why are sometimes requests from SRG archived while they aren't even closed? (they are still open, or on hold) Trijnsteltalk 13:37, 2 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This is concerning. I stopped the script for now until the issue is known and fixed, however this may take a wile because i am very busy with other stuff. --Steinsplitter (talk) 13:39, 2 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That's okay, we can manually archive requests for now. I'll inform the meta admins + stewards about it. Trijnsteltalk 13:47, 2 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, @Xaosflux: I saw you did stuff with your bot here on meta, in case you (or someone else) want to take over the task, the source code is on github (dependency: peachy). --Steinsplitter (talk) 13:54, 2 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Ungerechtfertigter DR?![edit]

Next steps for the wish “confirmation prompt for the rollback link”[edit]

Hello, a while ago you participated in a feedback round about a proposal how accidental clicks on the rollback link could be avoided. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and ideas!
Looking at the feedback and the rollback situation in different wikis, the development team decided how to approach this wish: As a default, most wikis won’t have a confirmation. But users who wish to have one, can enable it in their preferences, which will add a confirmation prompt to the rollback link on the diff page and on the list pages. The prompt won’t be a pop-up, but an inline prompt like for the thanks confirmation. You can read more about the planned solution and what influenced this decision on the project page. -- Best, Johanna Strodt (WMDE) (talk) 09:39, 16 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

archive frequency for Talk:Spam blacklist[edit]

Hi. At what rate, or settings, is SteinsplitterBot archiving Talk:Spam blacklist? Last visited in June, so I am unsure whether it has stopped visiting, or we are yet to hit the relevant trigger to archive. Thanks.  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:44, 7 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, It is currently switched off due to #Double archival?. --Steinsplitter (talk) 11:19, 8 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

I ask you because you're the last one who has modified this filter.

It has a problem : it blocks me when I want to update my LiveRC configuration, both with LiveRC (through api) and manually. I cannot even force the publication.

I looked into the text I try to add, and it seems that the problem comes from the line :

    LiveRC_Config["MediawikiInterwikimap"]["ticket"] = {'language':'null','url':'https://ticket.wikimedia.org/otrs/index.pl?Action=AgentTicketZoom&TicketNumber=$1'};

The line is a part of a global variable where is stored the interwiki map, but the filter seems to decide that I want to grant otrs permission to someone, or that I want to usurp an orts status or whatever. The result is that I cannot do what needs to be done : saving the mediawiki interwikimap in the page, and beyond, the entire configuration.

Would it be possible to modify this filter to avoid that. I think the problem comes with this change, with the ticket\.wikimedia\.org RegExp, that target the line above. Could you undo that change, or add some more test to avoid false positives like the one I suffer ?

May be you could test if the page ends with .js. That wouldn't probably solve all false positives but it may solve mine.

Thanks.

PS: Note that it happens not only here, but everywhere, while this filter is global. If you see the abuselog of this filter, you will see my nickname a lot, here and on fr.wikipedia.

OldBee (talk) 18:22, 16 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@OldBee: Hi, Would be possible by adding &!(article_text rlike '\/.*\.(js|css)$') but i removed the whole ticket pattern, because it is causing falsepostives on other pages as well. Regards --Steinsplitter (talk) 14:00, 17 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Central notice adminship[edit]

Hi! For security reasons, the Foundation decided to remove the rights related to Central Notice adminship from regular Meta admins, so that only the special group "central notice administrators" still has them. Since you made CN-related actions in the last 12 months, WMF requested us Meta bureaucrats to add you to do this group, in order not to disturb your workflow. The announcement can be found here. Close button not working on POTY banner[edit]

Hi,

On this banner for POTY, which I think corresponds to MediaWiki:Centralnotice-template-POTY_2018_R2 that you created, the close button has no effect. This was reported by Speculos on w:fr:Wikipédia:Questions techniques/semaine 7 2019, and I have the same problem (I am using Firefox 65, and it happens both on the French Wikipedia and the English Wikipedia). Can you please take a look ?

Thanks,

Orlodrim (talk) 12:05, 11 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It is Special:CentralNoticeBanners/edit/POTY_2018_R1_New (not the one you linked), it is fixed now. @Seddon (WMF): I had to patritially revert your last change. --Steinsplitter (talk) 12:18, 11 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

The banner has been stopped since one hour and I am fixing it. I replied to the user in the talk page in Meta where he left me a message. --Ilario (talk) 19:26, 11 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Ilario: Okay, Thanks! Please make sure to add a border as well. Have a nice evening! --Steinsplitter (talk) 19:28, 11 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Central Notice: Banner for the Technical Wishes survey on German Wikipedia[edit]

Hi Steinsplitter, would you mind having a look at this submission on Central Notice for the Technical Wishes and support it if you agree with it? That would be much appreciated. -- Best, Johanna Strodt (WMDE) (talk) 10:31, 4 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

SteinsplitterBot inactive on English Wikibooks[edit]

Not a pressing issue, I just wanted to inquire as to why it may have stopped updating the discussion logs back in February and offer to help with any code revisions that might be entailed to restore its functionality. Regards, —🐈⚞ogueScholar⚟🗨₨Talk 18:56, 3 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

A note[edit]

Hello Abuse Filter helper, we had recently have a new group Abuse filter maintainer which allows the same level of access with additional rights to edit the filters yourself among other things. If you are interested after reading the documentation, do apply at SRGP. Thanks.Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 08:55, 4 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

commonsarchive Cloud VPS project is left unclaimed?[edit]

Hi Sterinsplitter,

The Cloud VPS service is doing a cleanup for 2020. While browsing through the currently unclaimed list of projects, I noted that commonsarchive is one of them. I'm not sure if it's currently useful or not.

If it's needed, kindly claim it by following the instructions in the cleanup page. Else, you can note that it can deleted safely in that page.

Thanks, Kaartic [talk] 17:44, 5 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Help wanted for global templates[edit]

You have shown support for global templates in the past. Staff of the Wikimedia Foundation view this change as big. We need to convince the Wikimedia Foundation to start working on this. We have to reassure them there is sufficient support by local project communities.

You can help move this forward.

Please do setup a page on the local projects you are (most) active on in the language of the project. Tell your fellow editors why you believe global templates are necessary. Follow the local project decision process to come to a discussion outcome as support or not. There is plenty of time for discussion. Please reach a conclusion before the end of April 2021.

Please translate the coordinating page on meta to languages you are proficient in. Gathering_support_from_local_projects_for_global_templates

Please add a line to this meta page with a link to a discussion page on your local project(s).

The goal is to have the Wikimedia Foundation include a program to develop infrastructure for global templates in their 2021/2022 Annual Plan. The Wikimedia Foundation will decide on the Annual Plan in May/June this year.

The aim is to have several dozen local project communities to show support, and little concerns, issues or objections. Of course, any project can continue to use their local templates.

When you have questions about this initiative you can reach me at ad(_AT_)huikeshoven.org or + 31 6 40293574, and also on Telegram and Signal. You can also raise questions on the talk page on meta. Maybe some people would like to discuss this initiative in a meeting. Please let me know whether you would like to join a Zoom meeting in February.

Regards,

--Wurgl (talk) 22:23, 17 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion about CentralNotice Adminship inactivity and membership[edit]

Hello Steinsplitter. There's an ongoing discussion happening on Meta:Babel that proposes changes to existing Meta:Central notice administrators practices. In particular: membership duration and inactivity. As a current volunteer central notice administrator, your participation in the discussion would be appreciated. Thank you, --MarcoAurelio (via MassMessage) (talk) 10:45, 21 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How we will see unregistered users[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Call For Volunteer Facilitators Across Africa [edit]

The African Narrative
The African Narrative

Dear Wikimedian,

The Africa Narrative is seeking volunteer facilitators in Egypt (two volunteers) and Senegal (two volunteers) for the AfroCreatives Wikiproject.

The AfroCreatives Wikiproject aims to support and mobilize creatives and professionals from the African creative sector, as well as enthusiasts more broadly, to contribute and enhance knowledge on Wikipedia about Africa’s creative economy. Its inaugural effort will target the film sectors of Egypt, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Senegal.

The Africa Narrative (TAN) is a non-profit that develops singular, high-impact initiatives in support of African creatives and the African cultural and creative industries with the aim to strengthen capacity in the continent’s creative economy and the global visibility of African cultural soft power.

All volunteers must have full professional proficiency in English. In Senegal, they must have native or full professional proficiency in French; in Egypt, they must have native or full professional proficiency in Arabic. Volunteer facilitators should have a vast knowledge about Wikimedia projects and experience with teaching new editors. All volunteers will be compensated.

Interested participants may sign up on the project's Meta page. You may also indicate your country and email if your Wikipedia account is not associated with any email address.

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Africa_Narrative/Volunteers

We will be glad if you can share with or recommend an Egyptian or Senegalese Wikipedian as well.

Thank you.

Help[edit]

Greetings @Steinsplitter,

I am both an Interface and regular admin on Tumbuka Wikipedia (Verify).

I discovered you are a global admin.

How do I change my wikis logo (which is in English) and replace it with one in my language found here.

Any suggestions or directions?

Your quick help, guide or action will be highly appreciated.

Notice of review of adminship (April 2023)[edit]

Hello Steinsplitter,

Pursuant Meta:Administrators/Removal and because you have made fewer than ten logged administrator actions over the past six months, your adminship is under review at Meta:Administrators/Removal/April 2023. If you would like to retain your adminship, please sign there before April 09, 2023.

Kind regards, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 15:22, 2 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Global renamers/Stats[edit]

Hi Steinsplitter, sorry for the trouble. I noticed that your bot updates the global renamers stats. I kindly ask you, when you've some time, to please remove the number of renames performed by the single renamer. If you need an explanation, I'm happy to provide it, but you can find everything in the last threads on the mailing list. If someone wants the number, just for stats, they could use xTools. The page can be view as a ranking, and this is bad, because in the recent years we saw a lot of speedy processed renames, also wrongly, and the stats could be seen like a "competition". Obviously, we actually need the last performed renames for inactivity purpose, so the page is very useful, and I thank you for keeping it updated! Many thanks again and wish you a nice day :) Superpes15 (talk) 11:18, 16 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

No webservice The URL you have requested, https://globalusagecount.toolforge.org/?lang=en&file=Air+Force+Ensign+of+India.svg, is not currently serviced.

If it is gone away, then we need to remove it from the globalusage section at Commons.
