Stewards/elections 2011/votes/Beria

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
Since my vote page became what you can see now (a war zone) I would like to withdraw now. That will - hopefully - make easier and lessen the huge amount of work awaiting the election committee in a few days! Also, I wish to thank all the people that took the time to support my candidature, especially Hoo, who was the first to believe in me and Tanvir, Darkoneko, Nemo, Galio, Dereckeson, Waldir and Alchimista for been so supportive. Also, many of you seemed interested in our bad situation at portuguese wikipédia, so I'll be glad to answer any others questions about it on my talk page. Thanks again! • Personal info: Hello, my name is Béria Lima, and I’m 25 years old. I started editing on Wikimedia projects in 2007 at the Portuguese Wikipedia, where I was elected sysop in April 2008 and crat and CU in November 2008, until my demotion on April, 2009. Currently I’m autoreviewer and rollbacker on pt.wp. I edit in commons since 2007, and by now I have made over 1000 uploads. I have the flags of filemover and license review there. I’m also a OTRS member, and have editor and reviewer privileges in Portuguese Wikisource. My SUL has +50 000 edits in over 100 projects.

I have two bots: Lucia Bot, which works only in pt.wiki to do general tasks and Ripchip Bot, who is a interwiki bot.

I’m a volunteer at Wikimedia Brasil, and member of Wikimedia Portugal’s board. Because of that, I have sysop rights in br.wikimedia.org and wikimedia.pt. Some of my current work in WMPT includes the Iberocoop project. My past work includes being the Fundraising 2010 coordinator for WMPT and for the Wikipedia’s 10th anniversary celebration event in Portugal.

I decided to put my name as a candidate steward for the community because I have experience in the tools involved in stewards’ work, as well as the resolution of problems associated with vandalism. Also, I am often on IRC, in channels such as #wikimedia-stewardsconnect and #wikimedia-commonsconnect, so I can provide prompt assistance during most of the day. Thanks for your time and consideration.

  7. — Tanvir • 01:53, 7 February 2011 (UTC) Note: There is an ArbCom case is going on ptwiki for possible CU abuse of Ruy Pugliesi. Also, they are warring against each other pretty tight. It's quite normal they will try to put the impact here. Sadly, good or bad doesn't matter. And where ptwiki community is saying she is not trusted, but Commons community elected her as one of their trusted administrator with 30 support votes against no oppose. That's also a prove that she is suffering of internal war of ptwiki and trusted enough to be a steward.[reply]

  9. Please note that there's an internal war at ptwiki, which basically cuts it in two faction (with Ruy Pugliesi leading the other side). Almost all the oppose below comes from there.
It should be added that either side won't stop at anything try to destroy the other. (As of now, they have no more bureaucrat/CU/OS and only 36 sysop left). Ptwiki's situation is such a pain, seriously. DarkoNeko 02:56, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  18. She's interested in meta and crosswiki work and experienced enough; I've never seen anything wrong with her here on Meta; we need to make her presence on IRC more useful (:-p); the local conflict is just a local conflict and anyway the opposers don't seem to bring any compelling reason to think there was some abuse.
With regard to other questions etc.: I agree with her about the stewards requests from pt.wiki and multilingualism; her reply to Ruy was not so terrible given the context; the mentioned message on foundation-l was straightforward but on-topic and correct; I consider her answers to other questions entirely satisfactory. --Nemo 10:08, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  24. The current topic is the Beria election as steward, nor a collection of Portuguese Wikipedia issues. Furthermore, the stewards usage is to not use their tools on their homewiki. The question to examine in a steward election is "How the community will benefit of this new steward?" I know Beria from the IRC channel #wikimedia-commons where she's active and where she handles translation tasks, doing its part for Portugese and then seeking other contributors to translate to others languages. That shows a concrete, real and beneficial action for the community. We also need more non-English active stewards. So I strongly approve the Beria candidacy. --Dereckson 14:27, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please take your time to check Beria's contributions and compromise with the Wikimedia movement —at all levels— before being misguided by an unfortunate exploitation of ptwiki's internal disputes. Accusing her of not having enough command of the English language is the clearest example that some appear to be more interested in discrediting Béria —to the poing of questioning her in Italian, because Portuguese was not enough— than in electing stewards with both experience and compromise. Her dedication and commitment to the Wikimedia projects and her activity level throughout dozens of fronts (translatewiki, meta, commons, ptwiki, pt and br chapters, otrs, irc, among many others) are impressive and inspiring. Her temper and straightforwardness often give the impression of harshness, but her heart is always aligned with the best interests of our movement. Through my interactions along my years as a wikimedian, I experienced a personal growth in conflict management and collaboration, and I believe this opportunity will allow her to do so as well and become even more valuable to the community. --Waldir 22:56, 11 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  2. Oppose Strongly Oppose. Reasons: 1. Personal attacks: This user has been blocked on Portuguese Wikipedia (her home wiki) with an expiry time of 3 days due to "personal attacks and misconduct" (After a detailed checkuser result, she remained treating a newbie like a sockpuppet and also offended an account verifier, calling him a "blighter" ["corrupto"], what is a clear violation of "no personal attacks" policy). Later (November 2010), she received this warning from an administrator on Meta-Wiki and had your autopatrolled flag temporarily revoked. In this revison (December 2010), an ArbCom case, she offended an arbitrator, calling him a "cheeky / brazen" ("cara-de-pau"); 2. Constant edit warring on home wiki and misuse of edit summaries: This user is always trying to force edit warrings, by reverting others' revisions without previous discussion on their talk pages and leaving mockeries in the edit summaries. See this history page and this sequence of actions: 1, 2, 3 (personal attack), 4; 3. Misuse of edit summaries to mock and to personally attack administrators on request pages: 1, 2; 4. Misuse of edit summaries at village pump: 1, 2. Furthermore, in this revison (October 2010), at village pump, she called a group of users "cheeky / brazen" ("cara-de-pau"), again. 5. No cross-wiki activity: This user doesn't perform any cross-wiki activity, such as countervandalism/spam. If she doens't fill any criteria even for global rollback or global sysop (no experience), how she could become a steward? 6. Disruptive editing at administrators' request pages: 1, 2; '7. Lack of trust on homewiki: After her "demotion", she asked again for administrator rights, at a later time. As a result, her request became unsucceeded. Nowadays, she is not a trusted user in her homewiki anymore and I sincerely don't think she could be trustworthy enough to become a steward. Ruy Pugliesi 00:02, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  6. Oppose Strongly Oppose. The user had administrative powers suspended per community order, months after, its administrative powers was removed per community decision. The user also been blocked per political disregard for the project. Received during six months private information of mailing list for CheckUser users via e-mail in total disagreement with the privacy policy of the Wikimedia Foundation. There is also a history of conflict with multiple users. I don't trust in this user. Salamat disc 00:07, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  9. Oppose Strongly oppose. She demonstrates lack of fluency in the English language and deficient knowledge of Wikimedia policies (for example: she's tried to delete the talk page of a user who asked for the right to vanish). Furthermore, she is bossy (she is used to say on MSN Messenger that she can decide almost everything on Wikimedia Foundation) and overbearing. Being elected to steward position is a great risk. Junius 01:10, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  10. Oppose Strongly oppose, because: 1) prone to trollish behaviour (example, example), which includes 2) unfounded accusations (example, example). For trolling and baseless accusing she was already blocked at her homewiki, and flag suspended on Meta. The user, which is a former checkuser at her homewiki, often shows a 3) worrying lack of knowledge about checkuser and WMF privacy policies, demanding in more than one occasion the release of private and protected information (Example: "Espero os motivos, um por um, para cada verificação"). Adding to this, 4) ethical concerns have been raised when she continued receiving user's private information after she was demoted from checkuser (though she says she never looked into the emails, I find it hard to believe that a daily habit - which would be the case while she was a checkuser - would fade like this overnight). Finally, while there is or was an internal war at pt-wiki, and it's situation is indeed "such a pain, seriously", let's not forget that such war started here on meta and not the other way around. We don't need more stewards which treat Wikimedia projects in such a reckless way, let it be pt-wiki or some other project.--Darwinius 05:11, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I can't take sides since I won't have enough time to check if she deserves it or not, however I've read CasteloBranco's sensible comments about multilingualism and I totally agree with him: the Wikipedia projects go way beyond English and the other languages, whether big or small, statal or stateless, dominant or minorized and they should be all respected, treated on the same level and allowed the right to be used freely; if the stewards really want to do their job correctly they are free to find solutions (ask fluent speakers for instance) in order to answer the best they can. 16. About 40 users from pt.wiki have voted so far. About half are supporting and half opposing. This, in part, reflects a recent clash there, where we could say Beria and Ruy are in different sides. However, is important to say that most of the voters here have not voted "taking sides", but are following their own convictions, regardless the internal problems of pt.wiki. To me, the candidate fills the basic requisits for the job, maybe better than any lusophone user today. But the behavior of the last steward on the pt.wikipedia community was, im my opinion, disastrous. He did what some users still today calls "semi-intervention" there, mixing advices from other stewards with his own advices, bringing more confusion than solutions. He also came to pt.wikipedia to defend the halt of elections of bureaucrats and checkusers, a weird situation where Beria said a few weeks ago: "what they <<stewards>> are doing is pure "boycott" to requests from pt.wiki to not deal with both of you on meta:SRCU", about the excess of denied requests from pt.wiki. That's why pt.wikipedia is the way it is. I'm afraid that Beria would act the same way, on similar new situations. I could support the candidate if she commits to not act as steward on pt.wikipedia like the previous lusophone steward did, but I believe no one in her position could make such statement. That's why i'm neutral. (And sorry for a possible bad english... =P) Kleiner 13:34, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  17. Neutral Neutral It's sad, but serious people who really want to contribute to the advancement of Wikipedia should forget the Portuguese language as an option. Lusophone Wikipedia has long become a kind of circus, a "social network" (in the worst sense of the term), ruled by cyberbullies. There are even administrators and bureaucrats blocked ad infinitum by the improper use of sockpuppets (and there is no justified reason for the use of sockpuppets - IMHO). - Al Lemos 17:29, 19 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  20. Neutral Neutral -- I'd like to see more cross-wiki work. Portuguese language skills (and bot skills!) are certainly needed, and often a strong background from one's home wiki is enough to demonstrate the mediation and communication skills that are valuable for a steward. However in this case there is enough conflict on that homewiki that a history of work elsewhere matters. Global adminship for a year and some small-wiki monitoring might be a good way to get more experience with a variety of local policies. SJ · talk | translate 00:08, 23 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
