Copyright law[edit]

Without returning the article quotes the author infringes copyright. This is contrary to U.S. law and Slovak. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by (talk) 09:13, 24 June 2013

If some of the content in the article violates copyright laws, then remove that part. If all the content in the article is an infringement of copyright, then place a {{delete}} tag on the article stating the reason on the talk page. Just blanking out content in articles is not the proper way to deal with such situations. --Glaisher (talk) 09:22, 24 June 2013 (UTC) tasks[edit]

Hi Glaisher, and thanks for reverting vandalism on (and others)! Is reverting vandalism the only thing you do over there? Well, you can help more at the "Wikipedia Backlog" page, doing those tasks are really appreciated. :) --~ curtaintoad ~~ talk ~ 10:34, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[edit]

German Wikibooks don't see as spam. Check Diskussion:Traktorenlexikon. We don't want to be disturbed by people that don't understand German nor our arguments why this link is accepted.

Out of curiosity, did that script break the link for you on Monobook? If not, are you sure you either used debug=true or cleared your cache, etc.? PiRSquared17 (talk) 16:58, 29 July 2013 (UTC)

Cleared my cache and tried whether it works. Guess what? Blending-in does work in Monobook and other skins too. BTW, thanks for autopatrol. :) --Glaisher [talk] 17:11, 29 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi Glaisher, thanks for helping out at my user talk page on the Wikimedia UK wiki. Fortunately, it wasn't vandalism. At a workshop introducing people to Wikipedia edit I asked people to leave a message on my talk page and I hadn't got round to tidying up. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 09:57, 2 August 2013 (UTC)

@Richard Nevell Now that I think about it, it really isn't abuse. So the question is answered and the answer is "no". Thanks for telling. :-) --Glaisher [talk] 10:08, 2 August 2013 (UTC)

Lista krajów Europy wg powierzchni[edit]

Hi, i created this page and it was tagged to be quickly deleted. This page is not in English, but it was translated from English to fill up the gap of the List of European countries by area. There is a link to this page in one of the beginning paragraphs. Please, do not delete this page, cos it is very useful for Polish users.

Please let me know, how to resolve this problem. And also how to add this link to the one of the language versions of [[3]]

Best wishes, Asia

It has already been deleted from Simple English Wikipedia as that project is only for articles written in Simple English. However, you can start that article at . --Glaisher [talk] 12:28, 13 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi Glaisher, you proposed to delete wikt:nl:Overleg:'s dinsdags and wikt:nl:Overleg:'s donderdags. I reverted you because

  1. you don't speak Dutch
  2. you don't recognize and

Especially ANS (Algemene Nederlandse Spraakkunst) is a useful resource. It regularly tells me something about my Dutch, which I didn't know (apart from speaking Dutch just like they describe). If you have good reasons to want to suppress my assessment, please state them. -- 18:16, 20 October 2013 (UTC)

I confirm. These sites are informative about the Dutch language. JurgenNL (talk) 18:23, 20 October 2013 (UTC)

Global UP?[edit]

Did you try it? It's currently beta, and might produce some errors. (You should visit Special:Blankpage/globalsul first, to make sure you are logged in everywhere) PiRSquared17 (talk) 17:27, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

No, I haven't tried it yet. Is it possible to create/edit talk page with the tool? --Glaisher [talk] 18:05, 25 October 2013 (UTC)
It should be now (purge cache) if it says 'v0.2' at the top of the field box. If it says v0.1 or doesn't have any version, it's broken. Please note that the skip list uses a format like: en.wikipedia,it.*,*.wikiquote and that you should probably add a newline or two to the end of the textbox if you use "prepend" (or to the beginning if you use "append"), so that it's on a new line. See User:PiRSquared17/Global_UP. PiRSquared17 (talk) 19:02, 25 October 2013 (UTC)
I ran the script a while ago from abwiki to am.wikt. No errors :-) I can't think of any modifications to my user/talk pages right now but sooner or later I will probably run the script on all the wikis. P.S. don't you think there should be a pause button somewhere? --Glaisher [talk] 09:17, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
@PiRSquared17: For some reason I see no possibility to select "skip all existing pages" in the drop-down menu of "What should be done to existing pages?". Is there no possibility to skip them other than pasting a huge list of existing pages to "Skip wikis:" or do I just overlook something? Vogone talk 12:14, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
Seems fixed. Vogone talk 13:46, 30 March 2014 (UTC)

Hi. My class is editing. I'll revert any bad edits after class. so please don't ban them now. Regards Averater (talk) 11:48, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi Averater; You could undo the blocks yourself since you're a local sysop. And err, why are you allowing them to vandalize in main namespace? Sandbox or another experimenting page would be better, imo. --Glaisher [talk] 12:03, 14 November 2013 (UTC)
Well I was in the class room and it was my own class so I had bigger hopes for them. And that book they were editing is one I have created. But Hopefully they learned something and next time they'll be more serious. Still thank you for keeping vandalism in check! - Averater (talk) 12:09, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades... (our budget is smaller than Commons)

Glaisher, congratulations! You now have the rights of an administrator on Meta. Please take a moment to read the Meta:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat, and Meta:Requests for deletion, but also Talk:Spam blacklist and Talk:Interwiki map), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings, or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-admin @ You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading although it doesn't always completely apply here at Meta.

Please also check or add your entry to Meta:Administrators#List of administrators and the Template:List of administrators.

Please don't state wrong facts like e. g. here. This isn't very nice behaviour, especially on a sysop-protected page and might confuse other editors who now think zhwiki is a GS wiki, though it isn't. Kthxbai, Vogone talk 23:10, 29 April 2014 (UTC)

The Wikimedia Foundation recently created a new feature, "superprotect" status. The purpose is to prevent pages from being edited by elected administrators -- but permitting WMF staff to edit them. It has been put to use in only one case: to protect the deployment of the Media Viewer software on German Wikipedia, in defiance of a clear decision of that community to disable the feature by default, unless users decide to enable it.

If you oppose these actions, please add your name to this letter. If you know non-Wikimedians who support our vision for the free sharing of knowledge, and would like to add their names to the list, please ask them to sign an identical version of the letter on

I'm notifying you because you participated in one of several relevant discussions. -Pete F (talk) 22:07, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

Superprotect letter update[edit]

Hi Glaisher,

Along with more hundreds of others, you recently signed Letter to Wikimedia Foundation: Superprotect and Media Viewer, which I wrote.

Today, we have 562 signatures here on Meta, and another 61 on, for a total of 623 signatures. Volunteers have fully translated it into 16 languages, and begun other translations. This far exceeds my most optimistic hopes about how many might sign the letter -- I would have been pleased to gain 200 siguatures -- but new signatures continue to come.

I believe this is a significant moment for Wikimedia and Wikipedia. Very rarely have I seen large numbers of people from multiple language and project communities speak with a unified voice. As I understand it, we are unified in a desire for the Wikimedia Foundation to respect -- in actions, in addition to words -- the will of the community who has built the Wikimedia projects for the benefit of all humanity. I strongly believe it is possible to innovate and improve our software tools, together with the Wikimedia Foundation. But substantial changes are necessary in order for us to work together smoothly and productively. I believe this letter identifies important actions that will strongly support those changes.

Have you been discussing these issues in your local community? If so, I think we would all appreciate an update (on the letter's talk page) about how those discussions have gone, and what people are saying. If not, please be bold and start a discussoin on your Village Pump, or in any other venue your project uses -- and then leave a summary of what kind of response you get on the letter's talk page.

Finally, what do you think is the right time, and the right way, to deliver this letter? We could set a date, or establish a threshold of signatures. I have some ideas, but am open to suggestions.

Thank you for your engagement on this issue, and please stay in touch. -Pete F (talk) 18:11, 26 August 2014 (UTC)

Hello Glaisher. I updated your messages.js page to the latest version of TemplateScript (although you don't seem to be using messages.js anymore). This is mainly to enable automatic updates, but it also includes a few fixes. If you notice any problems or have questions, let me know! :) —Pathoschild 01:39, 27 August 2014 (UTC)

@Pathoschild: Thank you very much! I removed it because it wasn't working. I've added it again to my common.js and see that it is now working. Thanks, :-) --10:50, 27 August 2014 (UTC)

Blocks and censorship[edit]

Should the involved user ask for unblock, please feel free to reduce or lift the block. I do not think anything was censored, still revenge and unmotivated "strong opposes" are quite distant from the collaborative nature of this wiki and really unadapted to any people offering some unharmful work that doesn't even require flag and further responsibilities. Thank you, M/ (talk) 16:42, 1 September 2014 (UTC)

Thank you for clarifying. --M/ (talk) 11:05, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

Showing 'no'

Please be more careful while doing things you are totally unfamiliar with[6]. The language code "no" for instance does not even exist. Vogone (talk) 22:43, 20 September 2014 (UTC)

There is no way to preview it. Either way, 'nb' and 'no' were both included--at least one of them is valid. I don't think you can call this a user error. The software should validate each language code. PiRSquared17 (talk) 23:18, 20 September 2014 (UTC)
Actually, the software even suggests using 'no' as a language code. PiRSquared17 (talk) 23:28, 20 September 2014 (UTC)
Then there's a bug with the software. But everyone knows 'nb' is right, esp. when 'nb' was even included already before Glaisher on top unnecessarily added 'no'. Regards, Vogone (talk) 07:28, 21 September 2014 (UTC)
I was copying and pasting from the one at github as some languages were recently added. I didn't just paste it as it was; in fact, I double checked and modified some but unfortunately I missed this one. I've now removed 'no'. Thanks for telling. --Glaisher (talk) 10:58, 21 September 2014 (UTC)

Basque Wikipedia[edit]

Hi Glaisher, I´m a basque wikipedian. One question: in the left side of Basque Wikipedia's Main Page, we have a very long list of links of Wikipedias in other languages (Beste hizkuntzak), but we want a most practical and aesthetic way to put that long list in a smaller space with a scroll box, like for example in the way of Czech Wikipedia but we don´t know how to do it. Maybe we have to change something here? Do you know how to do it? Thanks and regards. Euskaldunaa (Euskaldunaa) 8:32, 22 September 2014 (UTC)

(talk page stalker here) You can do so by adding {{noexternallanglinks}} and the links you want to be shown in recent changes to w:eu:MediaWiki:recentchangestext. Regards, Stryn (talk)
Sorry my comment above was about something different than you requested (I had only a mobile phone at that time, so I couldn't open any of those links). --Stryn (talk) 18:55, 22 September 2014 (UTC)
I've answered on my talk page. Sorry for spamming here, Glaisher. --Stryn (talk) 18:55, 22 September 2014 (UTC)

Thank you...[edit]

...for cleaning up my mess. I'd thank you for each of those edits, but I hope this is okay. Savhñ 11:53, 28 September 2014 (UTC)

I was bored. --Glaisher (talk) 11:56, 28 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi, as a global sysop you are welcome to delete obvious spam and nonsense on en.wikibooks rather than just tagging it. It's a global sysop wiki and you won't get any complaints from the local team. Thanks - QuiteUnusual (talk) 12:03, 30 September 2014 (UTC) (speaking as a 'crat on en.wikibooks)

Translation admiship[edit]

I know that but i need it to To manage the groups of message and mark versions of pages to be translated,I think that that would be simpler than to wait of an administrator of translation makes it before I can translate the pages marked for the translation.Cordialy Startupevo1 (talk) 18:48, 3 October 2014 (UTC)

Edit of banner[edit]

Hi Glaisher! You have implemented the banner for WMSK's contest. Could you please add this image to it (with the same link)? It should be little bit attractive. Thanks! --KuboF (talk) 13:42, 6 October 2014 (UTC)

@KuboF: Should be done now. Let me know if anything needs to be updated and sorry for the delay in reply. --Glaisher (talk) 05:16, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
Many thanks! But the diacritics was removed, could you please update the text by original

Done now. Sorry for the error. My browser probably did something funny in the CN edit page. I've now manually edited the page in Mediawiki ns. --Glaisher (talk) 15:45, 10 October 2014 (UTC)
Thanks again! --KuboF (talk) 15:55, 10 October 2014 (UTC)

Commons:Bureaucrats/Requests/Odder (de-bureaucrat)[edit]

In the discussion at Commons:Commons:Bureaucrats/Requests/Odder (de-bureaucrat) you have expressed an opinion that Odder's bureaucrat status should be kept or removed, but you did not express the reasoning behind that opinion. I would appreciate it if you would return to the discussion and share why you believe Odder's actions were or were not appropriate for a bureaucrat. This will help avoid future drama by making it clear why (or why not) the community believes bureaucrats should be free to act in this way. Thank you. this message is here as you have soft-redirected your talk page at Commons Thryduulf (en.wikt,en.wp,commons) 17:25, 7 October 2014 (UTC)

help pls[edit]

Hi; I am a student in Başkent University. ip is used by Başkent Üniversitesi in Turkey. But it was blocked in Turkish wikipedia for unlimited time. block begins: 23:15, 6 Feb. 2011. Since that time whole university can not make any edits in Turkish wikipedia. We university students want to edit turkish wikipedia. Local adminstrators say they are very angry with an old time user and they dont unblock th i.p. and they punish a whole university. It has been a long time and probably the person that makes them angry is graduate by now. Thank you for help.

Happy New Year 2015 Happy New Year to you Dear Glaisher --Grind24 (talk) 23:32, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

why undo my 2015 rfc comment re ip block bans project wide, this is a useful enhancement

why does meta not use the global blocks whereas other projects do by default ?

Where to propose technical features[edit]

Hi. I'd like to make a proposal about streamlining the way pages are tagged for deletion, but I don't know where to initiate such a discussion. mw: doesn't seem to be the right place, and Requests for comment here on meta seems to be more policy-oriented, while this is a more technical question. Do you have any idea where I should start? Nirmos (talk) 07:22, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi. I assume this is about implementing a new MediaWiki feature. If so, the best way forward would be to file a new task on Phabricator. Sincerely, Glaisher (talk) 15:53, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, I've created phab:T91169. What do you think? Nirmos (talk) 15:03, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

Global user page migration[edit]

Hello Glaisher. Synchbot deleted your local user pages on all wikis as requested. You can see the full log on your archive page. :) —Pathoschild 06:53, 21 February 2015 (UTC)

Lovely. Thanks Pathoschild! --Glaisher (talk) 05:05, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

Oversight policy[edit]

Hello! You have invited me to translate Oversight policy to ukrainian. But section "Requests for oversight" is not available for translation. Fix it please for I can finish translation. --Tohaomg (7th of March 2015, 21:34 UTC)

Hi, that section is transcluded from another page Oversight policy/Requests for oversight. You can translate that page and it will show up in the main Oversight policy/uk page. Thanks for your help in translating! :) Glaisher (talk) 12:16, 8 March 2015 (UTC)
I have translated Oversight policy/Requests for oversight. But a chunk from "English Wikipedia" to "Wikidata" is not translated yet. Where is it transcluded from? And is there an ability to see from what pages is text taken to not ask you again? --Tohaomg (9th of March 2015, 14:35 UTC)
The section headers are not translatable in that page. Usernames shouldn't be translated and "email" link depends on the interface language rather than page language. If you want to see which pages are transcluded on to a page, you can always check the source code of the en page. Glaisher (talk) 15:58, 9 March 2015 (UTC)

Thank you[edit]

Thank you Hello Glaisher. I wanted to thank you for adding the #user-notice tag to tasks in Phabricator, in addition to adding items to the next edition. It makes it much easier to write Tech/News :) I really appreciate it. Guillaume (WMF) (talk) 15:28, 12 March 2015 (UTC)

You're welcome and thanks to you too for all your work in the Tech News! :) Glaisher (talk) 15:36, 12 March 2015 (UTC)

Hi. Concerning phab T94368 - I have no idea how to answer personally over there, so here. It's OK, we make a poll, but in fact, in the previous "great" poll we have been talking about "editors" (= Sichter") the whole time so if there ist something like this it would be OK in every case, as some 0.5 % of the user only will get the knowledge on how the right is being called. Regards, -jkb- 18:21, 30 March 2015 (UTC)

Hi, I believe I've already answered at the comment on the task. Best regards, Glaisher (talk) 03:52, 31 March 2015 (UTC)
