This page hosts requests for global permissions. To make a request, read the relevant policy (global rollback , global sysop , global rename , …) and make a request below. Explain why membership is needed for that group, and detail prior experience or qualifications.

This is not a vote and any active Wikimedia editor may participate in the discussion.

Global rollback and global interface editor requests require no fewer than 5 days of discussion while abuse filter helper and maintainer requests require no fewer than 7 days. Global renamer and global sysop requests require no fewer than 2 weeks of discussion. For requests that are unlikely to pass under any circumstances, they may be closed by a steward without further discussion (after a reasonable amount of input).

Global IP block exempt for Guxiangli Tongguan

Hello everybody. I am a Chinese student living in Australia. I haven't been able to edit lately because of many blocked IP blocks. Therefore, I would like everyone to exempt me from IP. I need to always mask my IP address for reasons of my personal security and privacy. However, I am unable to make contributions to Wikimedia projects when I am logged in and accessing the Internet via an IP that happens to be blocked. I would greatly appreciate it if I were granted an exemption, so that I may continue to contribute to Wikimedia projects. I do not have any other account on Wikimedia projects.--Guxiangli Tongguan (talk) 03:58, 30 December 2021 (UTC)Guxiangli Tongguan[reply]

Identical. Stang 19:18, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Stang. Hi, sometimes I get blocked from editing when using VPN with the reason using an open proxy. I use a VPN when visiting the website that get blocked (i.e. reddit) by government when I need to get the news from there and update Wikipedia articles. It's annoying that I always have to turn off my VPN whenever I want to edit on Wikipedia. I often edit on (id|jv)(wiki|wiktionary), and less on Commons, Old Wikisource, and Wikidata for interlanguage linking. Therefore I need a global IP block exemption, and I promise I will use it carefully and will not abuse it. Thanks!--Guxiangli Tongguan (talk) 07:31, 1 January 2022 (UTC)Guxiangli Tongguan[reply]
@Guxiangli Tongguan: You are currently residing in Australia so you shouldn't have any issue accessing Wikipedia without the VPN active. So long as you continue using your account and edit while logged in, your IP information is not public. Please disable your VPN/proxy in order to access Wikipedia. I left wikimedia Commons near 1 month ago, now I spend more time on wiktionary and Chinese wikipedia, but I'm studying abroad in Australia so I'm busy. So the number of edits is not much (sometime edit).--Guxiangli Tongguan (talk) 10:12, 1 January 2022 (UTC)Guxiangli Tongguan[reply]
Hi Guxiangli Tongguan, you need to explain why a proxy is needed if you edit in Australia. Also, if you want to edit Chinese Wikipedia, you need a local flag. Please visit this page for how to request such exemption. Stang 01:31, 2 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Global IP block exempt for Li_Dicker

Hello administerators.I'm Li_Dicker from China. When I was searching a Chinese actress tonight,I found it annoying that someone write Taiwan as an independent county. Global IP block exempt for Din-nani1

Hello All Administrators, This is Abdul-Rasheed Yussif, User:Din-nani1 from Ghana. I am a Co-Founder of Dagbani Wikimedians User Group. Through hard work we have been given a new language Wikipedia i.e Dagbani Wikipedia. With this, there are a lot of newcomers that still need skills to be able to contribute to Wikimedia projects. I am one of the trainers of such contributors and usually juggle among the various Wikimedia projects in order to help editors to be able gain the relevant knowledge and skills required to contribute to the various projects of Wikimedia, this usually lands me into my IP address being blocked. It is for this reason that I request for Global IP Block exemption.Din-nani1 (talk) 06:57, 28 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Din-nani1, thanks for the message! If you're using a VPN service, I recommend to disable it -- that should make you able to edit freely. If you're not using a VPN, I'd like to ask you to share the IP address you use, so we can investigate the block. If you don't want to do that publicly, you can email stewards(_AT_)wikimedia.org instead (just note the ticket number here [will come in an automated response], so we can follow-up quickly). Thanks! I'm a Wikipedia user from mainland China, as everyone knows, it's nearly impossible for people to access the websites such as Google in mainland China, so I can't help but use VPN to cross network blocks or limitations. That's why I'm here to apply for a global IP exemption. Although it would be hard for me to visit Wikipedia often, I will still try my best to contribute to it! I'm very appreciative of your help! --LeetGuy9915A (talk) 05:19, 8 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Dear @Stanglavine:, I know with member of templateeditor group on viwiki then I can use 2FA. But it available only on viwiki, not on global or another my account on Wikimedia. So, I want enable this right on global to use any project on Wikimedia. cc @NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh:Pk.over (talk) 14:19, 5 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Pk.over: 2FA is an account setting and accounts on Wikimedia sites are global. So, if you enable 2FA on viwiki, it will be enabled automatically across all Wikimedia sites because your account is the same and is just one. For example, the same situation applies to your password or your username, if you change it on viwiki it will be changed on enwiki, commons, wikidata too, because you have only one global account, one username, one password, and one 2FA setting. Hope this help you :) stanglavine msg 14:32, 5 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Stanglavine: Okay, I think I understood. But, templateeditor group as a risk rights group, and I can be revoke this anytime (per request or any reason). 2FA Tester group as a security option, and I can use this to secure my account. Please to explain me. Thanks Pk.over (talk) 14:49, 5 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

That won't affect your 2FA settings. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 20:43, 5 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Pk.over: If you had enabled 2FA for your account it will continue enabled even if you are removed from templateeditor group. Lost the "templateeditor" flag will not disable your 2FA. stanglavine msg 21:12, 5 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If you had the permission to activate it when you activate 2FA, you will be able to continue using it even if you lose the permission later. However if you want to disable and re-enable 2FA after you lose the permission, you will need the 2FA global group, which we will be happy to grant (when you do nothave the appropriate user rights elsewhere). — regards, Revi 07:38, 7 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

+sysadmin for Majavah

Comment Steward/fellow sysadmin comment FTR, this sort of access requires no consensus or vote. Who is (not) a sysadmin is ultimately decided on by the Foundation – the on-wiki access is granted to a subset of sysadmins (on-request), if they need to perform on-wiki actions. I will follow the precedent I created and check with T&S. I have recently been fixing cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities on enwiki (see my XSS patrol page). Some scripts and gadgets that I have found vulnerabilities in are copied to multiple different wikis, and I would like the ability to fix them all at the same time, to avoid letting potential attackers know where vulnerabilities are before they are fixed. An example of where this would be useful is phab:T298481 (currently only accessible to myself and WMF staff security-protected).
