This page hosts requests for global permissions. To make a request, read the relevant policy (global rollback , global sysop , global rename , …) and make a request below. Explain why membership is needed for that group, and detail prior experience or qualifications.

This is not a vote and any active Wikimedia editor may participate in the discussion.

Global rollback and global interface editor requests require no fewer than 5 days of discussion while abuse filter helper and maintainer requests require no fewer than 7 days. Global renamer and global sysop requests require no fewer than 2 weeks of discussion. For requests that are unlikely to pass under any circumstances, they may be closed by a steward without further discussion (after a reasonable amount of input).

@慕尼黑啤酒: Exact same thing as above, you have local IPBE. Do you still need this? -- Amanda (she/her) 08:02, 5 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@AmandaNP: Yes, I need global permission, thanks.--慕尼黑啤酒 (talk) 09:14, 5 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@AmandaNP: As I said above, I can't access to www.wikidata.org, so I can't add Interlanguage links, which is a problem for my daily editing and translation work. I'm guessing it's because I'm missing some sort of permission?--慕尼黑啤酒 (talk) 00:47, 6 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Global IP block exempt for Yusancky

Hello. Since I'm from China, I can only access Wikipedia through a proxy server. About two months ago, I successfully applied for blocking exemption for the Chinese Wikipedia, and later I was autoconfirmed. Here, I would like to request global IP blocking exemption to correct and improve part of the English Wikipedia about spaceflight. Thanks. --Yusancky (talk) 12:22, 6 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Yusancky: A global exemption will not help you on the English Wikipedia. They block proxies a lot more than we do globally. GIPBE only affects global blocks, where local IPBE affects local and global blocks. My suggestion is you apply for it locally. -- Amanda (she/her) 17:43, 6 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

(Temporary) global interface editor for Sohom

Hi, Sohom here, I would like to request access to the global interface editor userright on all Wikisource projects for a period of 1 month (3 weeks).

Background: For the past 1 year, I've been working with Sam Wilson and Ruthven to build Wikisource EditInSequence (T308098), a tool aimed at improving the editing interface for Wikisource editors. We have beta tested this feature in it.wikisource.org, nap.wikisource.org as well as on pa.wikisource.org and would like to deploy this feature across all Wikisources and gather feedback on our work at Wikimania 2023. However, while testing on it.wikisource.org there have been some instances of popular scripts/gadgets breaking due to the way this feature works, which have been resolved by deploying newer versions of the feature.

Need for tools: Having access to temporary global interface editor permissions during the period of the deployment will allow me respond quickly to feedback and to make quick fixes to popular userscripts/gadgets (on Wikisource) that have issues working with EditInSequence. (For example, a fairly common fix could be to have userscripts/gadgets use the jQuery.textSelection(...) API instead of the raw $(...).val(...) API which is known to cause some incompatibilities with EditInSequence's ability to detect and react to changes).

About me: I'm primarily a technical volunteer, (@Soda on phabricator) focussing mainly on improving the ProofreadPage extension, the Wikisource extension and more recently, VideoCutTool. I have written over 100+ patches and have +2 rights on all the aforementioned projects. I have previously deployed user-facing features on Wikisource, namely the Pagelist Widget as well as made small contributions to fixing various scripts around en.wikipedia.org as and when I came across them. In addition to this, also have search console access to Wikisource and have had 2FA enabled on both SUL and LDAP accounts since January 2023. Sohom (talk) 12:29, 6 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Questions (Sohom Datta)
@Sohom Datta: regarding this project: (a) do you plan to deploy this as an opt-in gadget? (b) some of the (mostly larger) wiksource projects have local interface administrators - what is your plan regarding these projects? (c) your description above includes wanting to change other scripts as well (which could include default gadgets, personal scripts, etc) - please outline the process of how these are going to be managed. — xaosflux Talk 11:00, 7 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Xaosflux To answer your points,
A user can choose not to use this feature (click on the tab), and nothing else will get activated by default
- The feature is integrated into ProofreadPage and will be deployed via a gerrit patch that will enable this feature. That being said, actually using the feature is completely optional and a user can definitely choose not to use this feature.
- If a local interface administrator is available and active, I will defer to them unless they specifically need any help tracking down the issues (in case weird edge cases/incompatibilities crop up).
- I only intend to make superficial changes (ones that will not affect the overall behaviour of the user-script/gadget) and will defer to local interface administrators/script-maintainers in case bigger/more complicated changes need to be made. (an example of a superficial change would be this request at it.wikisource.org and example of a more complicated change (that I would definitely defer to local interface administrators/script-maintainers) would be this request on en.wikisource.org which would require rewriting a bunch of that script)
Hope this clears up the specific question you had. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions :) Sohom (talk) 11:58, 7 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Sohom Datta thank you for the responses, on some projects this appears to be a gadget, will the new software be replacing the gadget?

Side note, we are not going to build some special wikiset that would actually limit this to only wikisources, so that would need to be an "administrative control" (a rule) you would need to follow if granted, especially avoiding out-of-scope edits such as editing through or changing protection on other types of pages - accidentally overusing access on other types of projects or pages could result in unwanted friction. Hope I don't sound like I'm lecturing here, your on-wiki editing experience appears light (which has nothing to do with your technical competency!) -- so just want to caution that having technical access does not supplant following all community protection policies. — xaosflux Talk 13:53, 7 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Xaosflux The intention is to eventually replace the eis gadget, however, this feature will not/does not interfere with the existing gadget or userscript in anyway. A editor will be able to use both without one superseding the other. (This was one of the reason we beta-tested on it.wikisource.org, since itwikisource is one of the wikis that makes heavy use of the original eis gadget).
Wrt to administrative controls, I completely understand your concerns, I will not be performing any interface edits outside of Wikisources despite having the technical ability to do so :) Sohom (talk) 14:39, 7 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
