How about setting up dcw: for www.dcwwiki.org ? I believe you can have a redirect from www.dcwwiki.org/hour/ to hour.dcwwiki.org/ , which can be extended to other subdomains beyond "hour" if necessary. The second part would probably have to be done internally in the dcwwiki server, but I think the required configuration would be minimal. whym (talk) 08:41, 15 April 2023 (UTC)
Hi @Whym, I am relatively new to this page and I was guided to here by Chris from Diff. Your suggestion looks helpful and and I have set a redirect from www.dcwwiki.org/hour/ to hour.dcwwiki.org/ but afaics, it works only for the mainpage. This could be of more help in future once the DCW website is live. The priority of the Hour is because it is already live and we are standardising it, and we it would really help us for maintaining Template:DCW CH footer, at the least, but having dcw: to the main dcwwiki.org would be more pretty because we are going to have much more for sharing at DCW through the main website. The exact server configuration depends on your setup. If you are using a managed service, the feature might be called "wildcard redirect". If it's not a managed service, the terminology and technology can vary. For the Apache software, it should look like this.
That said, if it's only for maintaining a template, an interwiki might be an overkill. Isn't it sufficient to make another template like Template:DCWH so that {{DCWH|abc}} would generate https://hour.dcwwiki.org/event/abc ? whym (talk) 11:35, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
@Whym, I did not mean that the interwiki is needed to only manage the template but it is part of the whole process, and events are the only thing besides the homepage (hour.dcwwiki.org) that need to be interwiki-linked. Once the dcwwiki website is live, a plenty of links are going to get along in DCW/news and other areas. I'd be glad to consider the template formula as well but I am not a master in template making and would need some assistance. @Whym, so, I have got something to do. For example, the event link, https://dcwwiki.org/event/dcw-conversation-hour-april-2023/, would be redirecting a visitor to https://hour.dcwwiki.org/event/dcw-conversation-hour-april-2023/ and I will have to do this with every event but the configuration is very minimal. Now that this puzzle is solved, we can have dcw: set for www.dcwwiki.org, and dcw:event/dcw-conversation-hour-april-2023 would take a person directly to event page at https://hour.dcwwiki.org/event/dcw-conversation-hour-april-2023/. I'm glad that it's working for you. So it sounds like your new proposal would be dcw: → dcwwiki.org. Can you modify the link/prefix/example/interwiki items at the top of this thread to reflect that? Comment Comment It appears to make the criteria and have a suitable mass at the other end, and usage within Wikidata. I would hesitate to use the short term "ant:" and counter propose that we could use antwiki:. Too short a name starts to put us running into potential problems with anything that wikimedia could use, plus with interlanguage links. @Billinghurst, I just noticed that I made a mistake when filling the data above. The "Link" field should be https://toolhub.wikimedia.org/tools/$1, rather than https://toolhub.wikimedia.org/$1, otherwise one needs to write [[toolhub:tools/patchdemo]], instead of [[toolhub:patchdemo]], to link to https://toolhub.wikimedia.org/tools/patchdemo.
Do you think it could make sense to incorporate tools/ in the link? I know that there are other pages in that site that are not individual tools (e.g. https://toolhub.wikimedia.org/published-lists), but I would say that linking to specific tools would be main use of this interwiki prefix.
Alternatively, there could be another interwiki prefix (toolhubtool:?...) which would allow linking specifically to a tool's page. WDYT? Waldyrious (talk) 14:45, 10 June 2023 (UTC)

I am proposing the removal of this interwiki prefix after enough time has passed since IRC/Migrating to Libera Chat. Looking at the global search results above, it looks like it is just used 7 times Wikimedia-wide, with just 3 in a non-archive NS_PROJECT page, which can be easily updated to the actual links in the Libera.Chat network, should those channels exist using the irc/ircs. 7 uses Wikimedia-wide do not justify an interwiki link, and considering that the community decided to move away from freenode due to general concerns about the network under the new leadership, I do not think we should keep supporting this IW prefix in this list. I made a mistake in the above search not using the case-insensitive option. Using that option and narrowing the search to the Main, Project and Template namespaces, it's actually 104 links that would break. Templates can be easily updated to use irc: or ircs: where needed, as well as Main and Project pages. In any case, I'd appear from the results that this interwiki link was used only to link to Wikimedia-specific IRC channels that are no longer in that network, so I'd rather replace those existing in the visible non-archived/non user/user-talk pages and break the rest. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 11:12, 5 April 2023 (UTC)

This would break links like rev:r1, because the rewrites for Special:Code currently strip an optional "r" prefix since the HTML files are just <number>.html. The r-stripping rewrite could be done on the static-codereview side, but someone would have to do it and I'm not sure anyone is really interested in changing that... Over 1,100 links from the English Wikipedia, the nice thing is links to (for example) HT201300 automatically expand out to the detected/selected language of the visitor, so a link to https://support.apple.com/HT201300 expands to https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201300 for me. There appears to be other deeplink magic potentially at work as well. I've no objection to apple being the prefix, but I'm not sure if that would conflict with any future proposal for a direct apple: → https://www.apple.com/$1 proposal, hence the additional "s" in the proposed prefix. —Locke Cole • t • c 22:25, 23 January 2023 (UTC)

  • Comment Comment I cannot say that I favour the proposal. (some thoughts) This is not typically what we have done, and as has been mentioned a template can manage this, especially if you have Wikidata items where you can have the syntaxed formulaic urls. People won't be looking for this use case, and it is not something where we readily do a lookup or good guess through likeness. We are without explanation of how static are the target urls, and their uses. Re the numbers of uses, yes, the number is sufficient, though that number is well below many others that do not have interwikis. The argument of "is/isn't a wiki" is informative rather than normative, and we have smaller numbers of local and non-local "not wiki" uses. The scope is somewhat limited to wikipedias, and not other sisters, and would seem that it would be usable in big wikis where it is advertise and known. So in the end I do not see this case as having a compelling argument to have an interwiki. The exact server configuration depends on your setup. If you are using a managed service, the feature might be called "wildcard redirect". If it's not a managed service, the terminology and technology can vary. For the Apache software, it should look like this.

@Whym, I did not mean that the interwiki is needed to only manage the template but it is part of the whole process, and events are the only thing besides the homepage (hour.dcwwiki.org) that need to be interwiki-linked. Once the dcwwiki website is live, a plenty of links are going to get along in DCW/news and other areas. I'd be glad to consider the template formula as well but I am not a master in template making and would need some assistance. @Whym, so, I have got something to do. For example, the event link, https://dcwwiki.org/event/dcw-conversation-hour-april-2023/, would be redirecting a visitor to https://hour.dcwwiki.org/event/dcw-conversation-hour-april-2023/ and I will have to do this with every event but the configuration is very minimal. Now that this puzzle is solved, we can have dcw: set for www.dcwwiki.org, and dcw:event/dcw-conversation-hour-april-2023 would take a person directly to event page at https://hour.dcwwiki.org/event/dcw-conversation-hour-april-2023/. I am proposing the removal of this interwiki prefix after enough time has passed since IRC/Migrating to Libera Chat. Looking at the global search results above, it looks like it is just used 7 times Wikimedia-wide, with just 3 in a non-archive NS_PROJECT page, which can be easily updated to the actual links in the Libera.Chat network, should those channels exist using the irc/ircs. 7 uses Wikimedia-wide do not justify an interwiki link, and considering that the community decided to move away from freenode due to general concerns about the network under the new leadership, I do not think we should keep supporting this IW prefix in this list. I made a mistake in the above search not using the case-insensitive option. Using that option and narrowing the search to the Main, Project and Template namespaces, it's actually 104 links that would break. Templates can be easily updated to use irc: or ircs: where needed, as well as Main and Project pages. In any case, I'd appear from the results that this interwiki link was used only to link to Wikimedia-specific IRC channels that are no longer in that network, so I'd rather replace those existing in the visible non-archived/non user/user-talk pages and break the rest. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 11:12, 5 April 2023 (UTC)

This would break links like rev:r1, because the rewrites for Special:Code currently strip an optional "r" prefix since the HTML files are just <number>.html. The r-stripping rewrite could be done on the static-codereview side, but someone would have to do it and I'm not sure anyone is really interested in changing that... It the usage is too extensive to clean up that sounds like a good idea, here's a rough draft for the discontinued list, if it's of any help:
  • In 2020 the /wiki subdomain of the Project Gutenberg website stopped functioning and began returning 404 errors, due to a website redesign.
  • You may be able to locate the content you were looking for by using the search functionality on the Project Gutenberg website. Copies of the wiki are also available in a number of archiving services, such as the internet archive.
  • Use of the "gutenbergwiki" interwiki prefix was discontinued in 2023, and it was remapped to point at this notice.

This one is a bit complex, and requires a bit of explanation. As far as I can work out the sequence of events is as follows:

  1. WoWWiki is founded as an independent wiki at the domain in the interwiki map.
  2. WowWiki is acquired by wikia, and moved to a wikia domain. This upset some of the community, who forked to make a parallel wiki on gamepedia.
  3. wikia renames to fandom, and WoWWiki is moved to a fandom domain.
  4. Gamepedia is acquired by fandom, and the wow gamepedia wiki becomes a fandom wiki. Because both wikis are now on the fandom platform they decide to merge.
  5. A new merged wiki, wowpedia, is created, the content of wowwiki is moved to https://wowwiki-archive.fandom.com/ and the wiki is locked.

At the moment the URL in the interwiki redirects you to https://wowwiki-archive.fandom.com/. This wiki is dead, it has been locked for editing by fandom, every page seems to be a mess of broken lua modules and templates, and the top of every page contains a massive banner telling you the content has moved to wowpedia. I think the interwiki should be updated to point at the wowpedia domain, which is an active wiki that contains the merged content of wowwiki and the gamepedia fork. 192.76.8.66 17:05, 14 August 2023 (UTC)

@Billinghurst: In es.WS I updated 1 link to historiapolitica.bcn.cl, so no more links in es.WS. There are some of the updated one, so I think it is OK in es.WS.
Old link historiapolitica.bcn.cl still is used in es.WP.
