The Affiliate-selected Board seats process welcomes your support

Globe of letters.png

Hello. You are receiving this message because you are active in the field of translations <3 The movement needs you! The Nominations phase has started for the ongoing selection process of two Board members, and the timeline is quite tight.

A Translation Central is available to help translators figure out what's been covered and what's left to do. Over the course of the next few weeks, your attention on candidates' profiles is particularly welcome.

While there are four languages that are especially relevant for multiple affiliates (namely Arabic, French, Russian and Spanish), you can also add others. If you can't help: please see if you know anyone in your circle who could, and spread the word :) Thank you! Elitre (WMF) and Facilitators of ASBS 2019, 13:20, 18 April 2019 (UTC)

User script to view subcategories

Hi DannyS712,

If you remember, you participated in the 2019 Community Wishlist Survey, including the discussion for a button to easily view subcategories (Community Wishlist Survey 2019/Categories/Button to show subcategories).

I sent you this MassMessage because I wanted to let you know that I have made a user script to do this.

If you are interested in using it, just add mw.loader.load('//meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:DannyS712/Subcategories.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript'); to your global javascript page, or to your wiki-specific common.js page. This imports the code at m:User:DannyS712/Subcategories.js.

If you want to learn more, there is documentation for the script available at w:en:User:DannyS712/Subcategories. If you would like to discuss the script, talk to me at m:User talk:DannyS712.

Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 00:51, 16 May 2019 (UTC)

  • Hi I have installed your script, but I do not see anything new. Alexei Kopylov (talk) 04:46, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
    • @Alexei Kopylov: if you go to a category page, there should be a button labeled "Subcategories" - what skin do you use? --DannyS712 (talk) 04:58, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
      • Hi @Alexei Kopylov:, with the default skin, the link appears in the menu containing the rename page link in my configuration. In the Timeless skin, the link appears in the first section on right of the page.
        • Ok, I found the link, but it does not do anything. Alexei Kopylov (talk) 17:42, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
      • But for me, these links doesn't do nothing. When I click on it, no action is thrown. I'm using Firefox (an old version - 52 - due to my company restrictions). I will try on my own computer this evening. Jpgibert (talk) 08:01, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
          • For me, the console of firebug is empty. Nothing is thrown when I click on link. Only a message in status bar appears indicating "javascript:void(0)". Just one thing, the menu is not hidden after clicking on link in default skin. I don't know if it can help you. Jpgibert (talk) 09:32, 17 May 2019 (UTC)
        • Hi DannyS712. Would it be possible to have a screenshot of the expected result, because I don't see any change in my interface ? Thank you. BluesyPete (talk) 08:47, 16 May 2019 (UTC)

Jpgibert comments

Hi DannyS712,

I tried to execute the test on my personal computer. Fail.

I tried to understand the problem. I launched the debugger on the script with a break point. The script is correctly executed (good thing).

So, I viewed the source code of the page in debugger and I saw that the content of the title attribute of the element having for class CategoryTreeToggle (the element searched by the script I think) is développer (in french, because it is my default language) instead of expand. When the category is expanded, the title element contains replier instead of collapse.

I think that is the origin of the problem on my side. I hope this information can help you to improve your script.

Jpgibert (talk) 18:25, 18 May 2019 (UTC)

@Jpgibert: yes, it does! Thank you so much. Now I just need to figure out how to internationalize it. --DannyS712 (talk) 18:28, 18 May 2019 (UTC)

Timeshifter comments

Category:Meta-Wiki organisation - a deeply nested category.

I am using Firefox (latest standard version) on Windows 7.

When I click on "Subcategories" it expands one level down. When I click it again it collapses. Repetition does the same thing.

Is this the expected result? Would it be possible to add choices to expand further and further down? One level at a time.

Maybe via ctrl-click or something similar. Or a right-click menu that allows one to select the number of levels down. -- Timeshifter (talk) 12:32, 14 June 2019 (UTC)

@Timeshifter: I couldn't make it recursive without making it language-specific, so for now this is the expected result --DannyS712 (talk) 12:34, 14 June 2019 (UTC)

Script to access user watchlists

Thanks for your note, DannyS712! The solution you provide doesn't really work for my setting since I need to have something that works on a series of private wikis that don't use centralAuth. I appreciate you taking the time to sent out a mass notice, though, so thanks for that!Tenbergen (talk) 02:31, 11 June 2019 (UTC)

@Tenbergen: well I could try to rig something up for you anyway - can you get me the URLs of the watchlists you want to access? (https://________/wiki/Special:Watchlist) I should be able to make a menu to navigate around those, though you would have to install it individually on each wiki if there isn't access to global.js. --DannyS712 (talk) 02:46, 11 June 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for the user script. It provides me a convenient list of all my Wikimedia watchlists. It would be nice if there were checkboxes next to each one. And that checking several of them would set up a single watchlist containing all the items on those checked watchlists. Preferably stacked one after another on one page, and not mixed together. --Timeshifter (talk) 01:47, 14 June 2019 (UTC)

@Timeshifter: that would be a lot harder - retrieving, formatting, and embedding watchlists from different sites is a lot more work. This was only meant as a stop-gap measure until the actual community wishlist item gets actioned. So sorry, but I don't think I can do that. I'm glad it is useful in its current form though. --DannyS712 (talk) 01:49, 14 June 2019 (UTC)
What about stacking transcluded watchlists inside show/hide boxes? So there would be a list of closed boxes on a page. People pick their choices. I might pick these:
  • Meta
  • Wikibooks
  • Wikisource
  • Mediawiki
I have a page of transcluded newsletters:
en:User:Timeshifter/Newsletters
I could easily put them in show/hide boxes on that page.
So why not a page of transcluded watchlists? Can't be that hard. :)
I don't want the watchlists themselves to be modified in any way. Just transcluded.
I guess the key question is whether it would be possible to make a watchlist open in a template:
{{Special:Watchlist}}
Is your user script about to be a gadget or setting on English Wikipedia preferences? It should be.

The Research team could use your help

Globe of letters.png

Hello. You are receiving this message because of your recent activity in the Translations namespace.

The Wikimedia Research team is developing a new algorithm that automatically recommends sections for editors to add to articles. Translations have already occurred for some of the few languages that we are testing in, except for Spanish and Russian. If you have some time in the next few days, please consider translating the short message (only 6 items) we aim to send out soon, in one or both of these languages. (And if you feel like you want to support your tester peers even more, you can do so by taking care of the related instructions page.)

Thank you! Jonathan Morgan & Diego Saez-Trumper, Wikimedia Foundation Research - 18:14, 19 June 2019 (UTC)

Re: remove unneeded newlines to avoid changing translation page template unnecessarily

What do you mean with such edit summary? Nemo 20:16, 17 July 2019 (UTC)

I've been going through the backlog of pages that have been edited since they were last marked for translation, and on some of theme the only (net) edit is the addition of a blank line. Marking the new version for translation with the newline means that every language version is then updated by FuzzyBot to have that extra line, despite having no benefits. If the change is just ignored, the note about the page having been changed since it was last marked for translation will just stay there. Thus, I revert the addition and mark the newer version for translation, eliminating the message about changes without causing a bunch of blank lines to be added. --DannyS712 (talk) 21:24, 17 July 2019 (UTC)

Hello, DannyS712,

Community Insights/Translation/2019/1-Invitation and the other pages listed at Community Insights/Translation#Requests for translations are ready to be translated. There is little more information about this group of invitations on the mailing list. Also, please keep an eye on that page: more pages will be ready for you soon!

Thank you so much for your help in translating these messages. Spanish is obviously a key language for the Wikimedia movement. I really do appreciate it. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 19:05, 22 August 2019 (UTC)

Appreciated 1Lib1Ref/Lesson for translation

You are very generous to push this page for translation. I wish to spread words on 1Lib1Ref campaign which will surely start smoother in 2020 than in 2019 with that page. A small background info: Need to aim a very long way locally, esp due our fiscal year ends in March, and budget was decided in June 2019 for January 2020 in Japan. While we missed budgeting opportunity for that one, we will have 2019 book frozen before May 2019, and be running on surplus/loan until the Diet finalize 2020 budget in June. My humble gratitude to you, as without translation of that page, reserving extra Yen for May 2020 campaign would be an illusion! --Omotecho (talk) 16:11, 29 August 2019 (UTC)

User script related to Wikidata sitelinks

Hi there DannyS712. I was wondering if you'd be willing to write/have the time to write/know of a script that would allow users to quickly remove a page on a particular wiki from the WD sitelinks on the corresponding item without navigating to WD. Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers, Hiàn (talk) 02:27, 25 September 2019 (UTC)

@Hiàn: To clarify, when looking at, eg "Help" on enwiki (w:Help), have a button to remove the entry from wikidata:Q20033? Why would this be useful? I could probably make one --DannyS712 (talk) 02:29, 25 September 2019 (UTC)
That's about right. I know it sounds like a very niche area of editing (it probablydefinitely is) but I've been going through the "redirects connected to a Wikidata item" cat on Wikivoyage occasionally and I've been thinking a tool to streamline the process would be a bit helpful.
I'm not sure about whether people other than myself would actually use it - if that's sort of the general criteria for writing up your user scripts then this very clearly fails that. Hiàn (talk) 02:35, 25 September 2019 (UTC)
I should be able to whip something up --DannyS712 (talk) 02:36, 25 September 2019 (UTC)
Much appreciated Danny. Hiàn (talk) 02:43, 25 September 2019 (UTC)
@Hiàn: See User:DannyS712/RemoveWikiData.js - Sometimes the wikidata edit fails, can't tell why yet, so if it fails the first time it is retried once. Let me know how it works out for you --DannyS712 (talk) 00:57, 26 September 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for all this, Danny, I'll begin using the script and report back when I have the time (tomorrow hopefully). Hiàn (talk) 01:40, 26 September 2019 (UTC)
I'm getting the sense I'm missing something, but do you happen to know where the button is? Hiàn (talk) 20:25, 26 September 2019 (UTC)
@Hiàn: it should be in the toolbar (same area as the "wikidata item" link) --DannyS712 (talk) 20:26, 26 September 2019 (UTC)
Yeah, looks like it's there (was a mistake with the script import on my end) and it works pretty well so far. Thanks for all the help again. Hiàn (talk) 20:41, 26 September 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for your help

Discouraging

Hello Danny. What does it mean that you discouraged further translation of pages of the 2017 movement strategy? Regards, --Gereon Kalkuhl (WMF) (talk) 21:34, 14 November 2019 (UTC)

@Gereon Kalkuhl (WMF): it means that, while translations are allowed, they are not a priority for translators and are less visible. I marked them as discouraged to try and direct translation efforts to more current pages - if a translator has the time to translate a page or two, I think its better to focus on the 2018 movement strategy, etc. than the 2017 pages, since those aren't as relevant. Hope this answers your question. Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 23:34, 14 November 2019 (UTC)

I don't think anyone has said it, atleast recently, but thanks for your continous translation admin work. You keep popping up in my watchlist; please don't stop. ~riley (talk) 23:33, 9 February 2020 (UTC)

Script request

Hey DannyS712, could you make a script that reverts vandalism and warns the vandal at the same time in Meta-Wiki? Thanks! CentralTime301 (talk) 22:48, 16 February 2020 (UTC)

Sorry, but I don't think I'm interested in making such a script, sorry --DannyS712 (talk) 01:08, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
Sorry for butting in Danny, CentralTime301, I think its better if we don't warn them automatically after revert, some/most of the vandal/spammer that come to meta are Long Term Abuser, or somebody who do personal attack and spread libel, the more you gave them attention the more they act, so remember, revert block ignore. Do not give them any warning just wait for admin to block then revert, or revert once and tell the admin.--AldnonymousBicara? 20:26, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
@Aldnonymous and DannyS712: ok. Might as well do undo for now. --CentralTime301 (talk) 12:38, 18 February 2020 (UTC)

User page deleted

Why did you delete my user page? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Teacher Daniele Krauz (talk)

@Teacher Daniele Krauz: Reason is for spam. Please do not spam on enwikiversity.--Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 16:20, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

What do you mean???? On that page there was my short resume, telling that I am a teacher and my areas of research and university where I studied. I guess that the reason for having a user page would be to tell people who you are and what you do, especially being this wiki for posting courses, researches, and projects. Now I'm really worried about having my hours of writing a project deleted in a second with not even a note in advance.

At the time you created the page, I don't think you had any other edits on enwikiversity, so I couldn't tell if you were going to be a contributor or not. Now that you have contributed further and are clearly not a spammer, I'm going to undelete it, but I suggest you trim it a bit - please see v:Help:User page - "You can put whatever you like on your user page, as long as it relates in some reasonable way to Wikiversity (and your involvement), and fits within Wikiversity:Policies." - your personal history doesn't clearly meet this requirement. In short, sorry for being a bit hasty, restoring, but please try to follow the policy I linked. --DannyS712 (talk) 16:00, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

Please don't revert war with vandals

HI Danny. There is zero value in this sort of pissing competition. Just leave it, we will get to it and stop it properly without having further crap to clean up. You are feeding the troll. Thanks.  — billinghurst sDrewth 09:31, 2 April 2020 (UTC)

I can't see the usernames anymore, but from what I recall it was a different user each time, and they were quickly locked; if the account is hidden, what "further crap" is there to clean up? --DannyS712 (talk) 15:33, 2 April 2020 (UTC)

Admin

Any particular reason why you haven't applied for adminship here? ~riley (talk) 23:12, 8 April 2020 (UTC)

I don't think I'd be successful, for one thing, and the current admins respond pretty quickly, for another. I'll give it some thought --DannyS712 (talk) 23:25, 8 April 2020 (UTC)

Wikipage

Hey I had created a wikiversity page before logging in. Now I've created an account can I change the page as created by my username? Or if i can't change it then can i delete the page and redo it? Gopikaa5555 (talk) 13:43, 12 April 2020 (UTC)

You cannot change who created it, but if you want I can delete it for you --DannyS712 (talk) 14:04, 12 April 2020 (UTC)

So I'll be making the same wikipage under my account again. Will there be any issues cause of that? Gopikaa5555 (talk) 02:36, 13 April 2020 (UTC)

Probably not, but I need to know what page it is --DannyS712 (talk) 04:32, 13 April 2020 (UTC)

Global watchlist - Update 6

New User Blocked Edit

Hi DannyS712, One of my students was blocked from editing their newly created page (https://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Federal_Writers%27_Project_-_Life_Histories/2020/Spring/Section33/Sharon_Cousins). They had just copied the code from a model and were in the process of fitting it to their own information, which is probably why they got flagged. How can we resolve the issue, and avoid similar problems in the future?

Thanks, AFicklin —The preceding unsigned comment was added by AFicklin (talk) 19:47, 19 April 2020 (UTC)

Unfortunately, I can't help with that; only bureaucrats can grant confirmed --DannyS712 (talk) 19:59, 19 April 2020 (UTC)
Thanks, I just got word that it's been resolved. They were instructed to edit one paragraph at a time to avoid problems down the line. AFicklin —Preceding undated comment added 20:02, 19 April 2020 (UTC).
Glad it was resolved --DannyS712 (talk) 10:37, 28 April 2020 (UTC)

Mop (less heavy).svg

Congratulations, DannyS712! You now have the rights of an administrator on Meta-Wiki. Please take a moment to read the Meta:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat, and Meta:Requests for deletion, but also Talk:Spam blacklist and Talk:Interwiki map), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings, or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-adminconnect. You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading although it doesn't always completely apply here at Meta. Please also check or add your entry to Meta:Administrators#List of administrators and the Template:List of administrators. You're also allowed to subscribe the metawiki admins private mailing list. Again, congratulations and welcome to the team. --MF-W 12:47, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
