Revision as of 08:13, 22 August 2016
This is not a vote and any active Wikimedia editor may participate in the discussion.
Global rollback and global interface editor requests require no fewer than 5 days of discussion while abuse filter helper and maintainer requests require no fewer than 7 days. Global renamer and global sysop requests require no fewer than 2 weeks of discussion. For requests that are unlikely to pass under any circumstances, they may be closed by a steward without further discussion (after a reasonable amount of input).

Global rename for Gestrid
- Wiki: meta.wikimedia.org (list 'crats • bot policy • summary • 'crats rights)
- User: Gestrid (talk • edits • logs • UserRights • activity • CentralAuth • email • verify 2FA)
- Not ending before 28 August 2016 20:53 UTC
I would like to help out with rename requests, specifically ones on my "home project" of English Wikipedia. As someone who helps at something enwiki calls the Teahouse, I run into quite a few new users with usernames that may need to be changed (ex. promotional usernames). (The Teahouse is a place specifically designed for new users to ask questions in a safe place and get answers from experienced editors, just so you all know.) I would like to not only direct those users to the rename request page, but also help them through the process. (I'd like to remind people that, for new users, most renames can't be done through the special page, as they have most likely not registered an email address.) I believe I would be suitable for this responsibility and privilege because I have had experience with quite a lot of new users, both the good kind (legitimate editors) and bad kind (vandals, questionable editors, sockpuppets, and the like). I've also been through the process (using the special page), so I know how it works on the renamed user's end. If you have any questions, I'll be happy to answer them. I've watchlisted this page while this "not-vote" (as we English Wikipedians call it) is going on.
Thank you for your consideration. -- Gestrid (talk) 20:53, 14 August 2016 (UTC)
- I would prefer to see a bit more experience (you have ~1600 edits globally). But thanks for volunteering! --Rschen7754 21:23, 14 August 2016 (UTC)
- About how much would you liked to have seen, Rschen7754? I'm asking for future reference in case this time doesn't work out. -- Gestrid (talk) 23:45, 14 August 2016 (UTC)
- I don't want to give out a hard number, but 1600 is too low. It's not just overall experience, it's demonstrating trust and that you will use the tools according to policy, even in difficult cases. --Rschen7754 23:55, 14 August 2016 (UTC)
- How much experience do you have successfully referring people to CHU or the request form? I agree with Rschen though that I would prefer to see much more experience generally before granting these advanced permissions. -- Ajraddatz (talk) 23:56, 14 August 2016 (UTC)
- After quickly searching the Teahouse archives, I found w:en:Wikipedia:Teahouse/Questions/Archive 500#Special:GlobalRenameRequest. I've tried to walk blocked people through the process of requesting a username change, usually those blocked for using a promotional username, which enwiki's username policy prohibits. However, I can't remember any specific instance of that, unfortunately. -- Gestrid (talk) 00:11, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
- Oppose Sorry to be your first oppose !voter, but I'm afraid I do not see the experience I'd like to see in a global renamer. I became global renamer after clerking the w:en:WP:CHUS and w:en:WP:CHUU pages for well over a year. You gain far more experience from doing so, such as how the SUL system works, or what to do with edge-case usernames. Simply referring people to the global rename pages isn't enough, I'm afraid. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 02:37, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
- Oppose Concerns with limited experience. -FASTILY 05:42, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
- Neutral Per what k6ka said, I think you need a bit more on-hand experience with user renames, say by handling clerking at the request venues. Global rename is not a trivial function. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 06:38, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
- Neutral per Rschen7754 and k6ka. Jianhui67 talk★contribs 06:55, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
- Oppose: Not much experience with cross-wiki activites. KGirlTrucker81 (talk) 01:27, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

Global rename for শাহাদাত সায়েম
- Wiki: meta.wikimedia.org (list 'crats • bot policy • summary • 'crats rights)
- User: শাহাদাত সায়েম (talk • edits • logs • UserRights • activity • CentralAuth • email • verify 2FA)
- In bangla wikibooks, there have no local Steward. So, if any member who want to rename, he/she do not get this option because, An Admin can not change an username . I am also admin of bn.wikibooks.org .So I need this rights/permission for bangla wikibooks community . please provide this permission . Thanks-শাহাদাত সায়েম (talk) 16:33, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
- How many users from bn.wikibooks have actually requested a rename this year? Ruslik (talk) 20:14, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
- There is a misunderstanding here. There does not need to be a local user from every wiki that has the global rename tools. Renames are now requested at Special:GlobalRenameRequest, and all requests, regardless of who made them or where they came from, all go to the same queue, where all global renamers can see them, and renames are done globally. If I renamed, say, Jimbo Wales, his username across all of Wikimedia would change. It does not matter who renamed the user; the end results are the same. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 23:15, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
- There is a misunderstanding. Perhaps we are not being clear enough on the global renamer documentation? --Rschen7754 00:17, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
- Sorry, Misunderstanding. I want this permission globally. I have a clear idea about global rename . I am saying about a local wiki because there have a Renamer page . but if I have this permission , I will work all wikis .-শাহাদাত সায়েম (talk) 04:50, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
- Oppose Per my last oppose and the edits here on meta on request pages are concerning. --Steinsplitter (talk) 18:55, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
- Oppose per above. KGirlTrucker81 (talk) 13:33, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
- Oppose. The misunderstanding that we see here does not reassure on the low global (cross-wiki) experience of the user. --Scoopfinder(d) 11:27, 21 August 2016 (UTC)
