Patroller rights to Dimon2711

Hi! Please give me patroller rights. Thanks!--Dimon2711 (talk) 17:09, 3 April 2019 (UTC)

Hello, Dimon2711, I saw you only have 116 edit on meta, and not even one single example of antivandalism activity can be found. I am afraid I can't do this for you.--AldNonymousBicara? 17:27, 3 April 2019 (UTC)
@Aldnonymous: thanks for autopatroller rights! But I also want to can marke edits as patrolled. I know all policies about it. I can't fight vandalusm because I didn't find any vandal edits yet. Maybe later I'll find vandalism and I'll rollback it, if I'll have rollbacker rights.--Dimon2711 (talk) 18:12, 3 April 2019 (UTC)
Not done. Hello, Dimon2711 sorry, based from this (Special:diff/18988156 and Special:diff/18988228) I have to reject this application. Please be careful with the use of Undo in the future.--AldNonymousBicara? 03:13, 4 April 2019 (UTC)

Page-moves request - Global Collaboration newsletter

Hi. Some pages were left behind during a page-move a while ago. Please move all 77 of the non-redirects that are listed in https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:PrefixIndex?prefix=Collaboration%2FNewsletter%2FIssues%2F&namespace=0 to "Global Collaboration/Newsletter/Issues/". Thank you. Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 19:10, 1 April 2019 (UTC)

@Quiddity (WMF): It isn't that easy, as some of the to be moved pages already have translations and in the new system at the destinations. It may be more appropriate to get them added into the translation system.  — billinghurst sDrewth 00:23, 6 April 2019 (UTC)
@Billinghurst: Oh bother. :-/ Ok, I'm pretty sure we don't want to distract anyone into translating ancient newsletters, so will pause and reconsider options. Thanks for taking a look at the problem! Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 01:37, 6 April 2019 (UTC)

Protection of user talk pages

Dear Meta admins. Could you by any chance put a long or indefinitely-timed semi-protection on a user talk page of mine, as well as other admins and closers of Russian WP section, such as Томасина, Ле Лой, Ping08, Sigwald, and maybe others? You can see there a lot of the same kind vandal edits from a multi-named vandal, and their reverts. While you are blocking his accounts anyway, this might decrease the amount of work (also, at least for myself - you can see that I barely have any activity on Meta, except for couple requests to its admins - so I am very unlikely to get any useful messages from non-admins; thus I would not mind even full protection if you consider so). Tatewaki (talk) 15:00, 5 April 2019 (UTC)

Done increased the protection to a year.  — billinghurst sDrewth 00:12, 6 April 2019 (UTC)

Bot inactivity check

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
First inactivity check done. I suggest we do another one matching the next admin inactivity check. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 10:43, 6 April 2019 (UTC)

In accordance with the Meta:Bot inactivity policy, the following bots are inactive months and are subject to deflag unless the operator of the bot replies asking to keep the flag:

Operators will receive a message on their talk page shortly informing them of this procedure. We can use this section to track operator replies, etc. The deadline is April 6, 2019.

Thank you, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 11:27, 30 March 2019 (UTC)

Operators notified on their talk pages here at Meta-Wiki. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 11:42, 30 March 2019 (UTC)

Hi, all. Thank you for notifying me regarding my bot inactivity issue. I originally got my bot flag to substitute templates tagged with {{Subst notice}} (meaning templates that should be substituted) using AWB and I used the bot to substitute {{welcome}} until I received a complain regarding this template. (See full discussion here.) After this I got busy in real life, so, I stopped running the bot for some time. However, I am still interested in running the bot, and I would like to request permission from the community here to continue having the bot flag. I will use it for the same task which is substituting templates tagged with {{Subst notice}} only such as {{test}} (but excluding {{welcome}} as per the result of the discussion linked above). Thank you in advance. --Meno25 (talk) 16:26, 5 April 2019 (UTC)

Restarting Wikisource:News

Hello all!

I am requesting the assistance of a someone able to send mass-messages across projects. I would like to send out this message to all targets listed here as well as once for all the Wikisource Community User Group participants. For the second set of targets, I would like to inform them that this is the only issue they will receive unless they opt-in (by adding themselves to the first set of targets). Many of these targets in the second set are not english language projects, and therefore I do not know the best way forward with that.

It is important to note that I am not requesting WM:MMS since I have never held such rights on any other project before nor am I an autopatroller here. –MJLTalk 00:48, 1 April 2019 (UTC)

@MJL: Can it wait until the weekend and I have some time? Heartily pushed for time at the moment.  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:00, 3 April 2019 (UTC)
@Billinghurst: of course! I am in no rush. :D –MJLTalk 22:37, 3 April 2019 (UTC)
@MJL: some thoughts. 1) This looks to be a notification of English Wikisource news, though the name that you use seems to be more general for Wikisource. If you are looking to be specific to enWS, then I recommend a more specific name for your group. 2) You also have a misdirected link Wikisource talk:News pointing to enWP. For any xwiki message delivery, I would encourage it to be brought to meta and have all links tested.  — billinghurst sDrewth 05:24, 6 April 2019 (UTC)
@Billinghurst: to be honest, I really would like to get the name of the newsletter changed. Also, for the next issue I plan to branch out to the other language wikisources. I fixed the link and posted on my talk page. Please let me know what you think of that version. (still doesn't include the note that this is primarily a one-shot notification for only wikisource user group members tho) –MJLTalk 05:52, 6 April 2019 (UTC)
I must have been sufficiently unclear, I suggest renaming the subscription page from Global message delivery/Targets/Wikisource News to something like Global message delivery/Targets/English Wikisource News. The former is too ambiguous.  — billinghurst sDrewth 10:21, 6 April 2019 (UTC)

Personal opinion is "let it go". It would appear to me that the vigilantism of "hunt and destroy" just encourages the game of vandalism. Make the world boring and don't feed the trolls. Deal with the trash that you see, stop making it your personal mission to try and drive someone off the sites.  — billinghurst sDrewth 09:50, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

Protect config page

Protect (semiprotect) please this page. It’s "real-time" config of app.—Iluvatar (talk) 17:17, 3 April 2019 (UTC)

Done SPP'd. — xaosflux Talk 17:42, 3 April 2019 (UTC)
@Iluvatar: Why do we have a real-time json configuration file sitting in the main namespace? I would have thought that Schema: ns was a more natural place.  — billinghurst sDrewth 21:57, 3 April 2019 (UTC)
1. My app does not related to the EventLogging extension; This is just a config that is more convenient to save in json format. As a huggle config, for example. 2. I find it logical that the config file is stored on a subpage of app main page. Or are there any reasons for move? (rules or traditions of Meta). Sorry for my English.—Iluvatar (talk) 22:20, 3 April 2019 (UTC)
I am not the expert of the ns, though I am pretty certain that it has been used for a broader range of json files other than specified. @MZMcBride: can you please guidance here?  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:27, 3 April 2019 (UTC)
This config file should probably live in the MediaWiki: namespace, though we don't follow-through with this concept everywhere. Note that that would make it only editable by +sysops; JSON MediaWiki pages are intentionally editable by more than just +interface-admins. Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 19:15, 6 April 2019 (UTC)
I suppose this should really be up to the tool maintainers (such as where this request came in from). They didn't have to place their config in an editable place like metawiki, but chose to. As far as being in "mainspace" that @Billinghurst: mentioned, maybe in Project space would be better, but would still have the same effect. Since the tool maintainer isn't an admin, locking them out from making changes by placing in mediawiki namespace doesn't sound like a good idea to me. — xaosflux Talk 01:14, 7 April 2019 (UTC)
json page could also live in a user ns, and have the person and admins edit it.  — billinghurst sDrewth 07:04, 7 April 2019 (UTC)
No, this config page should be accessible to all users, because propose to each user of app to add predefined summaries of rollback for their wikis. If config page cannot be placed as a subpage in the main ns or at least in the project ns (meta:swviewer/...), then delete it please. I will move this page to Labs, ruwiki or external site. (in now this page not used in main version of app. You can delete it and not affraid to crash something). Thanks.—Iluvatar (talk) 22:41, 7 April 2019 (UTC)

Confirmed status for User:BotRiconferme

Hello! I'm developing it:User:BotRiconferme, a new itwiki bot which will handle sysop yearly confirms. Occasionally, this bot may request the deflag of an administrator if they fail to be confirmed. For such a case, I'm kindly requesting to make it a confirmed user to avoid captchas, abuse filters etc. Thanks, --Daimona Eaytoy (talk) 17:03, 10 April 2019 (UTC)

@Matiia: It seems this is a request to bureaucrats. Could you take a look? --Vogone (talk) 23:26, 12 April 2019 (UTC)
It can do some junk edits on its talk page to advance itself, if you were looking to just get the status for OAuth purposes.  — billinghurst sDrewth 07:00, 13 April 2019 (UTC)
@Billinghurst: Yes, I asked just because I wanted to avoid junk edits :-) I'll do some, then, though I'm not really in a hurry. --Daimona Eaytoy (talk) 08:17, 13 April 2019 (UTC)
There is absolutely no need for junk edits if you are not in a hurry, bureaucrats can assign (and in the past have assigned) confirmed status in such cases. --Vogone (talk) 08:26, 13 April 2019 (UTC)
@Vogone: Nice, thanks! No, I'm not in a hurry because I'm still after a couple of things on itwiki before the bot can start; and even then, requesting a deflag is pretty rare. So yes, I'll just wait and do junk edits only if I'll have to. Thanks again, --Daimona Eaytoy (talk) 11:51, 13 April 2019 (UTC)

Hello, I have written a proposal for Book referencing, and received an antispam and antivandalism error. - NorthPark1417 (talk) 19:52, 18 April 2019 (UTC)

Since I asked twice to update this template, once here and second over IRC, I think this template can be downgraded in protection level. I'm thinking along the lines of Simple Wikipedia Recent Changes Text where the Translation of the Week template is given semi rather than full protection. This allows me to edit and help to maintain then asking a sysop. I feel the same can be done here but I don't feel comfortable with semi. Hence, I propose a subpage be created and the page to be under an AF protection. Autopatrol seems fine and we can up to rollback if needed. Ideas? Scolding of not needed are also appreciated.--Cohaf (talk) 16:28, 21 April 2019 (UTC)

Comment Comment As it appears in the header of RecentChanges, I am not certain that we want it more available to abuse to some sort of image or code injection. I would want to see it less able to be abused prior to being less restricted. So, my comment would be "no changes in its current form". If someone wants to sandbox something less abusable, or think how we might manage it through an abusefilter, then put the proposal.  — billinghurst sDrewth 03:09, 22 April 2019 (UTC)
With this being transcluded to a system message, I think it should stay protected. If it lags a bit between updates it's not really that big of a deal as well. — xaosflux Talk 13:24, 22 April 2019 (UTC)

Request for translation adminship - Tulsi Bhagat

See my previous request here: Meta:Requests for translation adminship/Tulsi Bhagat

Hello! Previously, I served here on meta as TA from Oct. 28, 2016 to Jan. 11, 2017. It was revoked by MarcoAurelio due to my bad(s). I think, I can be trusted and given the flag again to work on WACN project pages which i am coordinating right now. I would also love to help where the TA tools allow me, and when i feel i can help. I believe, I'm more experienced than that of the past days. Please checkout my recently prepared page for translation.

Since, It was revoked. I feel i can place a quick request here. Let me now, If i have to write it again (_AT_)Meta:Requests_for_adminship#Requests_for_translation_adminship. Thank you for reading my request. Kind regards, — Tulsi Bhagat (contribs | talk) 06:38, 19 April 2019 (UTC)

Add "bgn" language code in the list of RTL languages in Template:Dir

Just add bgn (روچ کپتین بلوچی, Western Balochi) as an additional language (see also incubator:Wp/bgn for information and status about this language). For now the template cannot be edited because it was locked by fully protecting two old log pages with an unexpected cascade option. (with very low risk on these pages themselves, given that it transcludes most of the content from subpages... that are not even protected now since 2019).

For now "{{Dir|bgn}}" returns "rtl", it should return "rtl" instead of "ltr".
See also {{LangSelect}} where the bug is also visible (no problem in that template which is correct) with the incorrect alignment of the language name to the left within the rendered list of RTL languages.

You may want to keep a separate (non cascading) protection on Template:Dir because {{Dir}} is widely used on this wiki. But I don't think it requires a full protection (the same is true for the two log pages). I don't understand the rationale given for the full protection the two log pages (because there was not a lot of spam of them, and now spammers can still spam the 2019 subpages that are not even protected at all.

An admin just needs to update Template:Dir (only 4 chracters to add) to add the missing language code to the list (he may also update the Template:Dir/doc which lists the bug and the expected result, but the doc page itself is not protected).

Admins may also want to add it too in the similar template on Wikimedia Commons (c:Template:Dir), because it is already needed by the Incubator wikis in Balochi which transcludes most medias from Commons.

Note: this Metawiki also recognizes the legacy code "fa-af" (with the ISO3166-1 region code for Afghanistan appended as a valid language subtag, to designate a regional variant of Persian/Farsi where it is distinctive in rare cases from the Iranian standard) which may have been used for the Afghan dialects of Dari or Balochi, though it should only apply to Dari. And Balochi is not just in Afghanistan, but more widely used in Pakistan and some north-western parts of Iran, and in a few bordering countries: Balochi is generic and is a standalong language independantly of the country. Common however does not list "fa-af" (just uses "fa" for any text in Persian/Farsi: "fa-af" is supported via standard language fallbacks, but "fa-af" may be already deprecated, unlike bgn for Balochi itself).

See also the same request on Template talk:Dir. Thanks. verdy_p (talk) 19:31, 20 April 2019 (UTC)

Done @ meta; Done @ commons. Removed protection the template (protection was there for ages) and it related to all subpages of the logs; the protection is now managed by other means.  — billinghurst sDrewth 03:45, 21 April 2019 (UTC)

Problem with saving translation

Hello!

I am receiving the following error message: "Saving the translation failed: This namespace is reserved for content page translations. The page you are trying to edit does not seem to correspond any page marked for translation."

Can someone please help? LTeles (WMF) (talk) 21:45, 24 April 2019 (UTC)

@LTeles (WMF): Known issue, see phab:T221119. Current solution is to wait a few minutes after marking for translation. PiRSquared17 (talk) 00:15, 25 April 2019 (UTC)

Can someone help create a global abuse filter?

I've been trying to find someone... -- Lofty abyss 01:11, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

Perhaps specifying what kind of help is needed would help attracting offers. --Vogone (talk) 23:26, 12 April 2019 (UTC)
Just an AF that looks out for a word, but would rather tell whoever can create it privately or on IRC so as to not attract attention from these spammers. -- Lofty abyss 23:39, 12 April 2019 (UTC)
@Lofty abyss: is the scope of the problem small to medium wikis? (GAF's don't apply to the big projects for the most part). — xaosflux Talk 02:56, 13 April 2019 (UTC)
Well, ideally all wikis... not sure if the bigger ones have their own yet, but I have noticed this in small and big wikis, and it's been going on for months due to a well-publicised event. -- Lofty abyss 03:07, 13 April 2019 (UTC)
If it is xwiki spam, I doubt it is going to be identified here, well not enough to change behaviour. Find me when I am in IRC, or just leave a message on my talk page that nobody understands. Links to messages is always useful to see a problem edit in context.  — billinghurst sDrewth 06:58, 13 April 2019 (UTC)

Promotion

@Matiia, MarcoAurelio, MF-Warburg, and Tulsi Bhagat:

Hello bureaucrats, two users have been waiting impatiently for 3 days to be granted their rights, if you consent. Meta:Requests for adminship#Tulsi Bhagat and Meta:Requests for adminship#Eihel. Would you kindly access their respective requests, please? Best regards. --Eihel (talk) 07:07, 29 April 2019 (UTC)

Done. Matiia (talk) 12:51, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
@Eihel: All the same, please be mindful that (a) most of us are volunteers, and (b) it was still a holiday week in many places. So patience is always worthwhile. StevenJ81 (talk) 15:32, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
@StevenJ81: This is very likely just an unfortunate literal translation from French ("attendre avec impatience", which corresponds to "look forward to"), rather than an indication of actual (negative) impatience. :-) --Vogone (talk) 16:55, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
Oops. Sorry. My French is actually pretty good...most people even think outstanding for an American, since Americans are known to be awful at languages. ;) But I was not familiar with that idiom. (Je regrette.) StevenJ81 (talk) 17:30, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
Eihel Promoted, doubts cleared up thanks to Vogone and I think nothing more to do here? Sorry I can't add a French phrase here. Apologies.--Cohaf (talk) 08:50, 2 May 2019 (UTC)

Request for Mass messaging rights

Hello, I am Rupika Sharma, Community strategy Liaison in Movement Strategy Team. I would like to request mass messaging rights for facilitation in community conversations on-wiki. Thank You. RSharma (WMF) (talk) 17:37, 27 April 2019 (UTC)

@JSutherland (WMF): as you generally handle WMF stuff. Matiia (talk) 17:47, 27 April 2019 (UTC)
@RSharma (WMF): Please email ca@wikimedia.org, CCing in your manager for their approval. Thank you! Joe Sutherland (Wikimedia Foundation) (talk) 00:53, 28 April 2019 (UTC)

Prominent Main Page link is a decade out of date

Main Page links to the Strategy wiki, which has been closed read-only for almost a decade. Would you please consider changing that link to Strategy/Wikimedia movement/2018-20? James Salsman (talk) 23:10, 27 April 2019 (UTC)

That wouldn't make sense. The Main Page says: "Other meta-focused wikis such as Wikimedia Outreach and Wikimedia Strategy are specialized projects that have their roots in Meta-Wiki". The whole point is that it's a link to a separate meta-focused wiki. If we instead link to the local page Strategy/Wikimedia movement/2018-20 on Meta-Wiki, then the sentence no longer makes sense. If we absolutely need to "modernize" the link, I'd suggest replacing it with a link to wmania: or something. But I don't think it's really necessary. PiRSquared17 (talk) 02:06, 28 April 2019 (UTC)
@PiRSquared17: how about changing that sentence to, "Other meta-focused wikis such as Wikimedia Outreach are specialized projects that have their roots in Meta-Wiki. Related discussions also take place with strategy working groups here and on Wikimedia mailing lists...." It seems quite counterproductive to send people interested in currently ongoing strategy discussions, for which there have been several pleas to volunteers for additional participation, to a read-only wiki from the previous decade. Especially since many of those pleas simply say that the discussions are "on Meta," so it seems reasonable to expect that some of the volunteers looking for strategy discussions will look at the Main Page. James Salsman (talk) 21:02, 28 April 2019 (UTC)
(Edit conflict.) That would be better, but the whole paragraph is all about discussions that take place outside of Meta-Wiki, so the link still wouldn't really fit in IMO.
Maybe we should just remove the strategy link completely if it's causing confusion (despite the prominent sitenotice on Strategy Wiki?). However, if you think the discussion is important enough to deserve mention, maybe it should be added to a different part of the main page (e.g., if it's time-sensitive, it can go under "Current events"). PiRSquared17 (talk) 21:07, 28 April 2019 (UTC)
That would absolutely be fine with me too. The Timeline says the community discussions are supposed to go through Wikimania in September, and then in October through June 2020 the WGs are supposed to do implementation recommendations. James Salsman (talk) 22:02, 28 April 2019 (UTC)
You should be able to simply add it to Template:Main Page/WM News then.
There actually is a problem with removing the strategy wiki link from Main Page, now that I think about it. The problem is that there are over 120 translations of the Main Page, and the mention of the strategy wiki would have to manually be removed from each one (while respecting the language's grammar). Replacing the link with another link would not require cleaning up the translations, as the link is a translation variable. Alternatively, I think it might work to remove the link without invalidating existing translations. However, it would be easier if we could just leave the link in place but edit Strategy Wiki's sitenotice to be even more prominent, or something like that (although personally I think it's already prominent enough). PiRSquared17 (talk) 23:08, 28 April 2019 (UTC)
@PiRSquared17: thanks again. I edited the template. Any idea how to flag the announcement for translation? I'm still keen to get the link to the strategy wiki deleted, as it seems entirely pointless at best and likely to misdirect interested volunteers coming from off-wiki discussions at worst. James Salsman (talk) 20:23, 30 April 2019 (UTC)
@James Salsman: The announcement is already being translated. It uses a completely separate system from the Translate extension used on the rest of the main page. See e.g. [1], [2]. As for the link in the second paragraph, I'm not sure what the next step forward is. PiRSquared17 (talk) 16:01, 4 May 2019 (UTC)
Yeah, the main page could probably use some love. To respond to part of PRS17's qualms, I'm not exactly certain how the translation feature works, but it probably relies on the English version as the primary source. It seems inordinate to try to keep all versions synced at the same time. I'd venture the English version gets more pageviews than the rest combined, too. Killiondude (talk) 03:37, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
