Review of initial updates on Wikimedia movement strategy process[edit]

Note: Apologies for cross-posting and sending in English. Message is available for translation on Meta-Wiki.

The Wikimedia movement is beginning a movement-wide strategy discussion, a process which will run throughout 2017. For 15 years, Wikimedians have worked together to build the largest free knowledge resource in human history. During this time, we've grown from a small group of editors to a diverse network of editors, developers, affiliates, readers, donors, and partners. Today, we are more than a group of websites. We are a movement rooted in values and a powerful vision: all knowledge for all people. As a movement, we have an opportunity to decide where we go from here.

This movement strategy discussion will focus on the future of our movement: where we want to go together, and what we want to achieve. We hope to design an inclusive process that makes space for everyone: editors, community leaders, affiliates, developers, readers, donors, technology platforms, institutional partners, and people we have yet to reach. There will be multiple ways to participate including on-wiki, in private spaces, and in-person meetings. You are warmly invited to join and make your voice heard.

The immediate goal is to have a strategic direction by Wikimania 2017 to help frame a discussion on how we work together toward that strategic direction.

Regular updates are being sent to the Wikimedia-l mailing list, and posted on Meta-Wiki. Beginning with this message, monthly reviews of these updates will be sent to this page as well. Sign up to receive future announcements and monthly highlights of strategy updates on your user talk page.

Here is a review of the updates that have been sent so far:

More information about the movement strategy is available on the Meta-Wiki 2017 Wikimedia movement strategy portal.

Your revert[edit]

Expect only criticism from now on. Tony (talk) 14:22, 24 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Tony1, I'm sorry you feel so annoyed and angry about this revert, and sad that you think it stems from ignorance. I recognize the value of your edits and thank you for proposing them. There are processes I am here to have respected as part of my job. A lot of donors' money is tied to these recommendations and we do not allow organizations to alter their proposals without asking first on the talk page. I hope you will reconsider the idea of only criticism, unless it is constructive criticism. Best. Delphine (WMF) (talk) 21:29, 24 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I'm very annoyed—affronted—that a simple good-faith effort by a community volunteer is spurned. But worse, that the FDC and the staff have ownership problems and a bog-headed attitude to the quality of their sloppily written text.

I am clearly not an applicant organisation; the reasoning you offer is absurd; it vindicates in principle my slightly overstated accusation of "bureacratic garbage".

If you're going to be so precious about your sloppy text, as I pointed out on the talkpage: why don't you put an edit note at the top (or lock the damn thing)?

I don't know what you classify as "constructive" criticism, since criticism can sometimes disadvantage certain parties for the good of the whole. But in my view the FDC and its supporting staff are ripe for criticism five years down the track. Tony (talk) 04:44, 25 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

And although I'm still annoyed, I want you to know that it's not personal. Tony (talk) 08:54, 25 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Tony1, I understand it's not personal and I thank you for making it clear nonetheless. I will be working on incorporating the necessary warnings in future recommendation pages and invite suggestions on the talk page. Best. Delphine (WMF) (talk) 09:18, 31 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Your revert[edit]

would not have been necessary if you didnt use this. Artix Kreiger (talk) 17:57, 28 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Artix Kreiger. This what? The IP address? I am not sure if that is what you meant. But in any case, I wasn't this IP. I've been editing logged for 12 years I think. The IP was someone from Wikimedia CH who has been doing good edits under this very same IP throughout the document. I am not sure I understand why you reverted this person on the basis that it was an IP, if that is indeed what you did. Their edits throughout this document had only been good, so I am not sure what compelled you to revert. :(. They had been working hard on this and had to reach out to me to understand what had happened. Hence my revert. Cheers. Delphine (WMF) (talk) 18:41, 28 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I want to apologize because I was in a bad mood. I did not know if the information was true so I reverted. Artix Kreiger (talk) 18:49, 28 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Apologies accepted Artix Kreiger! And thank you for your work here. Better revert once too many than once too few ;-). Delphine (WMF) (talk) 19:16, 28 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
please extend my apologies to the rest of the team as well. Thanks. Artix Kreiger (talk) 19:32, 28 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Artix Kreiger will do. As we say in French, "plus de peur que de mal" (more fear than harm done). I see you're new here, welcome to meta! If you have any questions, go ahead and ask! Delphine (WMF) (talk) 19:50, 28 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

About me[edit]

For the most part, I have been an very active editor on Wikia, editing various wikis. I got bored of the childish nature and lack of involvement by people. My interests and fandom were very specific. After a while, I just wanted to learn some "real world" stuff instead of the fictional world. So I moved over here to WMF projects. By the way, I split it up so that section can be removed.Artix Kreiger (talk) 20:01, 28 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Seeking WMF financial information by region[edit]

Where can I find a report of Wikimedia Foundation annual spending by region? Is the WMF internally aware of its spending by region? Where is a published report?

I will take what you have. I am hoping for a balance sheet starting with annual spending, the US$100 million, and breaking it down in a way like North America, South America, Europe, Africa, etc. If there are regions, I would really like to see spending in South Asia, Middle East, East Asia, and the former Soviet Union.

Thanks for whatever you can share, or any previous discussion to which you can direct me. Blue Rasberry (talk) 12:04, 18 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Blue Rasberry . I am in the middle of reviewing 30 APGs right now, so I won't prioritize your question until two weeks from now. Just wanted to give you a heads up that this will take some time. Thanks! Delphine (WMF) (talk) 12:09, 18 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Acknowledged, thanks. Blue Rasberry (talk) 12:10, 18 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
