Translation notification: Fundraising 2012/Translation/Donor email response

Hello Jseddon (WMF),

You are receiving this notification because you signed up as a translator to Kanuri on Meta. A new page, Fundraising 2012/Translation/Donor email response is available for translation. Please translate it here:

The priority of this page is high. The deadline for translating this page is 2012-08-08.

Hello Translators

I just want to thank you for volunteering and to say how appreciative I am of the work translator do, in particular with the fundraiser. It is nothing short of vital.

Our first big test of the year is going to be dedicated to the Spanish language and so over the coming days you'll receive a number of translation requests. For the moment the goal is insuring that all donor communications are fully translated. These quick steps will help get you started:

  • Click on the "translate to Spanish" link above
  • Double click the message you want to translate
  • Type your translation, click save and repeat.

The Fundraising team are also looking for local testers and proofreaders in the spanish language to help us throughout the year.

If you would be interested in helping us please email me (jseddon at wikimedia.org) or post on the talk page of the fundraiser translation hub. [1] Feel free to post any questions, comments or feedback about the new translation extension on the same talk page as well. [1]

Thank you!

Hi Joe, I mentioned to the localisation team that the "Meta translation administrators" signature should either be customisable or at least be wikilinked to some form of translation hub on Meta. As you will be using it for your Fundraising work, I imagine you would want to be the point of contact for messages (remember the talk page messages may be sent cross-wiki), so this would be a feature we would want added to the Translate extension? Also, as the first translator for Kanuri, welcome! ;-) The Helpful One 11:05, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
Hey THO, after testing this over the last 24 hours its definitely something that should be changed. It makes translation requests very impersonal and in all likelihood certain translations are going to have different points of contact for questions etc. and its difficult to know who that is unless you put those details into the notification itself.
Also being able to add multiple pages to a request. It's probably pretty important to try to keep email and talk page traffic to a minimum. Is Siebrand the person to talk to about this?
Jseddon (WMF) (talk) 11:31, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
Glad to know it's not just me! I agree that it seems to be a bit impersonal and adding multiple pages would be a great way to reduce excess spam. Yes, Siebrand or Niklas should be the guys that will be able to help as they are main developers of the Translate extension. The Helpful One 12:11, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
If I'm not wrong the translation to Spanish is yet ready, no? Fugi-bis (talk) 17:21, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

hello, I have a doubt. The page shows that it i translated up to 100% but section titles are shown in English (not only for Spanish but for all the other languages). It is that right? It is intended? best regards,--Barri (talk) 06:02, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

Translation notification: Wikimedia Highlights, July 2012

Hello Jseddon (WMF),

You are receiving this notification because you signed up as a translator to Qafár af and Kanuri on Meta. The page Wikimedia Highlights, July 2012 is available for translation. You can translate it here:

The priority of this page is medium.

Note: This time, the "Wikimedia Foundation highlights" section does not include the usual coverage of the most notable work of Foundation staff during that month. Instead, it contains a list of talks given by Foundation staff at Wikimania, summarizing their most important work the year over. It looks like a lot of text, but only the talk titles will need to be translated. The intention is that these titles alone can already give readers a good overview of what the Foundation is working on in general.

Please consider helping non-English-language Wikimedia communities to stay updated on the most important WMF activities, MediaWiki development work and other international news from the past month.

Misplaced translations

Translating the fundraising messages to Macedonian, I made a bit of a mess by accidentally entering some of them into the German (as yet untranslated) translation messages. Since I don't have deletion rights, I'd ask you if you'll be so kind to delete them for me. I had foolishly blanked them in meantime, so don't be surprised when you see them translated, but with nothing in them. Here they are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Thanks a lot in advance. --B. This letter is a new translation request, but re-uses large parts of the 2011 Jimmy Appeal, with slight modifications in the second version.

If the 2011 Jimmy Letter has been translated into your language, you can probably re-use much of it for this translation. :-)

London Bid

I want to support London for Wikimania, but I also want to support others, can I do that? Do you live in London?--Lucky102 (talk) 20:59, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

Unfortunately I am not currently involved. Might I suggest you contacting User:HJ_Mitchell Jseddon (WMF) (talk) 00:04, 1 October 2012 (UTC)
Ok, it's just you created the page, but I've been told you have to live there to nominate it.--Lucky102 (talk) 06:46, 1 October 2012 (UTC)
Is that right?--Lucky102 (talk) 06:54, 5 October 2012 (UTC)
Well the team organising it certainly do need to have some of base there. I really suggest you speak with harry mitchell on this topic though. I am currently in no way involved. Jseddon (WMF) (talk) 07:02, 5 October 2012 (UTC)
Alright, but you do not live in London or the UK, no?--Lucky102 (talk) 15:07, 5 October 2012 (UTC)
Because, if not, you can't nominate, or so I'm told.--Lucky102 (talk) 19:57, 14 October 2012 (UTC)
It doesn't make a difference who creates the page. It is about who is actually leading the bid, those who are leading the bid are based in london. Jseddon (WMF) (talk) 20:25, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

Mistake in source text to be translated

Hi,

I am translating the czech fundraiser texts, but I found that in one message there is that WMF has 150 employees and in other one 140. Which number is correct?

Feel free to update the number yourself, the text itself is correct Petrb (talk) 15:59, 4 October 2012 (UTC)

The source texts still don't agree, they can't both be correct. Can somebody confirm whether this should be 140 or 150? Lloffiwr (talk) 12:45, 10 October 2012 (UTC)
Number confirmed as 150 by J Seddon in translators-l message. Noted on message documentation. Lloffiwr (talk) 16:45, 13 October 2012 (UTC)

Changing translation status

Hi, Joseph! I translated Fundraising 2012/Translation/Jimmy Appeal into be-tarask, then it was proofread. When I change the status to 'Ready', it fails with a 'The requested state is invalid' message. What's the matter with it? Wizardist (talk) 15:23, 7 October 2012 (UTC)

Try editing the status here. I think the above message appears if the language recorded in your preferences is not be-tarask. Lloffiwr (talk) 12:41, 10 October 2012 (UTC)

Please see my post on talk:Fundraiser 2012 (Translation of url link texts). I think that this is an urgent issue. Lloffiwr (talk) 12:36, 10 October 2012 (UTC)

Wrong translate tags

Hello, looks like someone is copying translate tags on some translation pages, see Special:PageTranslation; for instance Fundraising 2012/Translation/he. I've no idea why this is happening nor how to fix it, do people still need to copy and paste and edit ugly templates? Anyway, can you please take care of such mistakes? Fundraising translation to Argentine Spanish

Hello, Jseddon! You created this page. How do I copy the standard Spanish translation into it, so I do the adaptation? By the way, if I finish the Argentine Spanish translation, please make sure that us Uruguayans get that version and not the Mexican or standard. Thanks! --NaBUru38 (talk) 22:19, 4 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi!

Chinese

Hi, Seddon.

  1. I notice that there is 8 favors of Chinese on meta available for me to translate in this year fundraising translation. To concentrate manpower, is possible to just enable zh-hans and zh-hant only?
  2. I ran into a second problem with ordering in our thank you letter. The closing in Chinese letter is reverse of the English's one; that is the sender's affiliated organization and title should put before his/her full name. Using Fundraising_2012/Translation/Thank_you_letter/zh as an example, it should be

维基媒体基金会

执行董事 Sue Gardner [1]

Is there anyway to fix the translation?

  1. During the banner testing hour, the banner didin't show in proper favor of Chinese. Per se, I read page in zh-hk, the banner was in English. This should be related to my first problem(?). --Simon Shek/石 (talk) 18:49, 16 November 2012 (UTC)

Landing Page and Banner messages/11 and 12

I asssume that (male) and (female) in brackets after these messages are not to be translated - they are just translation hints? I have drafted message documentation accordingly.

Having added the message documentation, would you delete the (male)/(female) from the English source, as this may lead to incorrect translations. Lloffiwr (talk) 18:41, 17 November 2012 (UTC)

"throw his or her idea" sounds nice, but will fail at WF:TF (origin research). Plese have clearly differed, were to throw ideas and were to write referenced content. Hello,

And also: Why do you send me messages again after I have fully translated the task??

This is annoying. Maybe think of a more appropriate way of communication? Especially when the work is done!

Hi! Thanks for your message about the fundraising translations. Just wanted to point out that you probably want to make sure that the messages only go to actual user talk pages, not pages like User talk:Jafeluv/global.js for example :) Cheers, Jafeluv (talk) 13:57, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

From Henriku - your request

Hi Jseddon,

I'm afraid I can't help much. First of all, I am not a real speaker of Polish (my native language is Czech, I was editing mainly in Upper Sorbian of Lusatia; I speak Polish fluently, but I can't write in this language). Except it, I have stopped editing because of serious health reasons. I am sorry but I am sure you will find some native speaker of Polish, the Polish Wikipedian community seems to be quite serious. Best regards. --Henriku (talk) 18:00, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

Translation request - Polish/Czech?

Hello,

I am not sure I understand your request on my talk page. You write something about Polish. I can understand Polish, but I cannot use it actively. Your link leads to a page containing both polish and czech texts (Main Text in Polish, Jimmy Text and Legal Text in Czech). What am I supposed to do? In which language? --Mmh (talk) 19:44, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

Do you happen to have Polish set as a language in Special:TranslatorSignup or in your preferences? πr2 (t • c) 19:51, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

No, I have not set any language there. --Mmh (talk) 20:16, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

Important corrections in Ukrainian translation of Fundraising banner

Dear Joseph,

I've beed adviced to ask for your help with replacing an old text of the Ukrainian banner with a corrected version as discussed by Ukrainian wikipedians at the following pages: [16], [17], [18].

Unfortunately, the current Ukrainian text of the banner contains very unpleasant errors and appears to be a result of machine translation. Therefore I must ask you to replace the current content of the page MediaWiki:Centralnotice-2012translations-facts-1/uk with the following:

Вікіпедія — некомерційний проект, але вона належить до п'ятірки найпопулярніших сайтів світу. Наші сторінки відвідують 450 мільйонів користувачів на місяць, і як і будь-який великий сайт, ми витрачаємо кошти на сервери, електроенергію, оренду приміщень, програмне забезпечення, зарплатню працівникам та юридичну допомогу.

Next, the text at page MediaWiki:Centralnotice-2012translations-facts-2/uk should say:

Щоб захистити свою незалежність, ми ніколи не розміщуватимемо реклами. Нас не фінансує жодна державна установа. Ми існуємо завдяки пожертвам: 50 ₴ є найбільш поширеною сумою, а середнє значення близьке до 250 ₴.

And the text at page MediaWiki:Centralnotice-2012translations-facts-3/uk needs to be changed to:

Translations

Hi JSeddon, and thank you for your message. I would be happy to help with translations if I can. Please contact me on my main page: Utente:Ferdinando Scala on it.wiki, I'm seldom here.--Ferdinando Scala (talk) 10:54, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

Hello, I noticed that the Italian page MediaWiki:Fr2013-dropdown-informationsharing/it contains a link to the German version of the Donor Policy instead of the Italian one.
The correction should be trivial (to substitute href="//wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Donor_policy/de" with href="//wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Donor_policy/it"), but I don't have the rights to modify the page.
Would you be so kind to have a look at this? Thank you. Pac72 (talk) 11:38, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

Flood flag

Hi Jseddon (WMF). Do you still need the flood flag you gave to yourself on 18 February? That flag is only temporary and should be removed if one doesn't need it anymore. If your task is done, please remove it. You are always free to add it again when you need it of course. Thanks for your understanding. With regards, Trijnsteltalk 11:20, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

Re:Fundraising translation feedback

Hi Jseddon o/,

First of all, thank you very much for writing to me. I am familiar with translations from English and French into Spanish. Please do not hesitate in the future to ask me anything you need.

Thank you very much. --Wilfredor (talk) 20:41, 1 April 2013 (UTC)

There are errors in translation (semantic errors), a wording a little strange, if you let me, I can help. --Wilfredor (talk) 20:45, 1 April 2013 (UTC)
Notes
  1. sitio destacado is a term subtly strange, I suggest simply putting sitio or sitio web.
  2. un lugar al cual , the correct translation would un lugar en donde.
  3. pondremos anuncios, could be ponemos anuncions or colocamos anuncios.
  4. A less formal translation would be closer to the person, I recommend the use of familiarity.
  5. Para mayor información por favor lea nuestra política de privacidad para donantes. , the correct translation is Para mayor información, por favor lea nuestra política de privacidad para donantes.
Hello, Jseddon. Thanks a lot for your message. I have already checked the different sections of the text. I hope it is alright (depending on the place and situation, we Spanish-speakers tend to use different vocabulary and formal or informal pronouns and conjugations; anyway, it is a matter of style). Thanks for reading this message. Have a lovely day! Best wishes!--Alpinu (talk) 23:12, 1 April 2013 (UTC)
Hi, Jseddon. Thanks for your message. I can not help you with the translation of these texts from English to Spanish, because my knowledge of English is very limited. Sorry. Dorieo (talk) 12:45, 2 April 2013 (UTC)

From Auró. Your request

Hey Jseddon

I am willing to make a contribution in banner translations. For the moment, though, I would need some clarification. The link you have given me as containing instructions is to the page "Fundraising 2012/Translation/Comunity review-es" In it I can see comments from several editors regarding the best way to fix the translation of this banner. These are my questions:

The comments of editors are intended to create a consensus for a final edition, or are they comments after having done some modification?

Who proposes the texts to be checked, and by what means or channel?--Auró (talk) 22:29, 3 April 2013 (UTC)

Time for translating the last page is too short

Kind Mr. Jseddon, I'll make my best, but you must also consider that me and many others translators, in their real-life, are working people in some Factory and also we have heavy family's works and many others things to do.. I hope that you have requested this translation to many others people, because I can't do it all alone. Best regards, --Gloria sah (talk) 20:05, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

RE:Fundraising translation feedback

Hi there,

no problem as long as I have time to do it (sometimes I have too much work, ...). I think you should know that my mother tongues are both Catalan and Spanish, don't know if you need any help with the Catalan banners. --Luna92 (talk) 19:24, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi. I'm sorry I didn't see your message earlier... I don't visit Meta too often. But I made my suggestions already. Hope it helps. Best, --Edgefield (talk) 07:54, 19 April 2013 (UTC)

Meta:Flood flag

Dear Joseph. Pursuant Meta:Flood_flag#When_to_use_the_flood_flag section of the policy I have removed the flood flag you set yourself on this account on February 18, 2013. Feel free to reinstate it should you need it again, but please remember to switch it off when you're done next time :). And, since now Translation notifications are being all sent by the translation notifications bot, translation admins will not be flooding anymore with those messages. Best regards. -- MarcoAurelio (talk) 21:28, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi JSeddon and thank you for the message. I'm more than eager to help, no problem :-) --Ferdinando Scala (talk) 18:35, 28 April 2013 (UTC)
JSeddon, I only have a doubt: the link brings me to the translation page of the 2012 version: is there any mistake here, or have I to update to 2013?--Ferdinando Scala (talk) 18:40, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

Re: Fundraising test in Italy

Hi Joseph,

yesterday I wrote a sitenotice on it.wiki inviting people to give WMI the "5 x 1000", that is a part of their taxes that italians can donate to italian charities or non-profit associations like we are (there is a similar chance in Poland, maybe you know it). So, please, tell me when, on Tuesday, the tests are going to start (morning, afternoon or evening) and I'll temporary remove the sitenotice, since I don't think having two banners asking for money at the same time is a good idea. Let me know if you're going to do some other test in the next months and I'll do the same. Bye --Cotton (talk) 18:41, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

re: translation feedback

Hi Jseddon, thanks for your message. I have checked and did some translations for the banner. I don't understand why some of the text is marked as translated and some is marked as "to be proofread". Anyway I checked everything as correct. I hope I didn't make mistakes. Drop me a line if I can be of further help. Happy editing, --Austroungarika (talk) 19:31, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

Fundraising translation feedback

Hi Jseddon, thank you for the invitation: I made some minor edit suggestions to some Italian translations. Please note, as already mentioned in the community comments, that suggesting a donation of one coffee's value (just 1 euro in Italy) is also in my opinion too small an amount. Kind regards, --Nungalpiriggal (talk) 03:30, 30 April 2013 (UTC)
