  1. Dorothy introduced the meeting!
    1. We have Spanish translation for this meeting. Anyone who wants it may access it through the web chat interface
    2. We have an agenda posted on Meta. Everyone has access.
    3. If anyone has questions or needs support then message the hosts.
    4. We start the meeting with an administrative update on Wikimedia LGBT+. Then we review current LGBT+ related programs. We have updates on some recent events. Then we have a presentation from a guest speaker, Pax, who was named in the Wikimedian of the Year event at Wikimania
  2. User Group administrative updates
    1. Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group Membership Registration and Elections
      1. Membership launched Tuesday 12 September Wikimedia LGBT+/Membership/Registration-questions
      2. This is Wikimedia LGBT+'s first time attempting a membership registration program
      3. The process we have adopted is borrowed from other Wikimedia community groups, but particularly from Wikimedia Medicine
      4. The reason why the group is establishing membership is so that it can begin voting processes
      5. currently many key decisions are made by the Wikimedia LGBT+ governance committee, and that committee and other group participants wish to transition to a more democratic process
      6. You will have an opportunity to register as a voting User Group member. Details announced this week on the mailing list and our Telegram group. See here for details about the Membership process: Wikimedia LGBT+/Membership. Members will have voting privileges for upcoming Wikimedia LGBT+ Board Elections: Wikimedia LGBT+/Elections
      7. The application is an online form, which is easiest for the group to process
      8. For anyone who prefers to not use the form, the questions are online, and sending in responses by email is an option
      9. We permit blocked or banned or restricted users to join Wikimedia LGBT+
        1. to use this option, please apply acknowledging the restriction and give an explanation
        2. we are doing this because we are aware of LGBT+ editors frequently being the target of hounding for reasons related to being LGBT+ or editing LGBT+ topics
      10. the membership process will develop over time
      11. Questions about membership registration?
      12. I have registered but I am unclear about whether my registration has been received. What can I do to confirm the validity of my application?
        1. Answer: Dorothy will check the form to see if there is an option to send confirmation emails

    5. Art&Feminism Peru and WikiAccion Peru están realizando un evento próximamente sobre temas LGBT al que asistiré https://ccelima.org/evento/editaton-memoria-historica-lgtbqi-en-peru/
      1. These groups are doing LGBT+ documentation in Peru
    6. Toronto in November is hosting https://wikiconference.org/wiki/2023/Main_Page
    7. Europride is running right now. Previously Wikimedia Austria hosted this
  4. Community presentations
    1. Wikimania 2023 share session - what happened? what went well? what related to LGBT+? what challenges did attendees face?
    2. LGBT meetup in Singapore recap: wikimania:2023:Program/Submissions/LGBT_meetup_-_NRFFRY (in-person only)
    3. en:Talk:LGBT_and_Wikipedia#No_sexual_assault_in_2023_Wikimania_toilet
    4. Everyone who comes to the Wikimania LGBT+ event has a story of harassment - the same was true at this event
    5. Local anti-LGBT+ organizations at Singapore visited Wikimania to protest it and complain about it
    6. To call back to earlier in the meeting - it was problematic to take attendance at the Wikimania meetup because people worried about their personal security
    7. There are real risks and harassment which come from being perceived as LGBT+ or editing LGBT+ topics in the Wikimedia platform
  5. Pax Ahimsa Gethen, Media Contributor of the Year, 2023 Wikimedian of the Year Awards - 10 minute talk, followed by 5 minute Q&A
    1. Presentation: A Decade of Visibility and Resistance (PDF, Google Slides)
    2. Hello from Pax!
    3. I accepted the Wikimania award remotedly, at 3am from San Francisco
    4. Today I will share photos which I have shared in Wikimedia Commons over the past 10 years
    5. This photo is from last month, of a public commemoration of Transgender Pride Month. The photo shows the mayor of San Francisco in City Hall promoting the event
    6. This photo from 2013 is a government announcement that California has legalized same-sex marriage. It is an interfaith gathering at a cathedral in San Francisco
    7. There is an annual trans march which happens every June but which is during pride, but not part of pride, and which I have photographed every year
    8. These photos are of social justice rallies and protests in 2016-17. These are about race, Latino rights including DACA/ dreamers and other issues, rights of indigenous people including the Dakota access pipeline,
    9. These photos are of protests against Donald Trump. This protest was in the Castro, which is the LGBT+ district in San Francisco
    10. There is a San Francisco Office of Transgender Initiatives, and these photos are of events supported by that office
    11. Some concerns:
      1. people photographed on the street may be and have been doxxed and harassed by anti-LGBT+ people for participating in public LGBT+ events
      2. private commercial companies have collected and copied Wikimedia Commons photos of protests then marketed those free photos for sale, without communicating clearly that they are available for anyone to reuse
    12. question: Do you ask people if you can take the photos, or mention to people that it will be on Wikimedia Commons?
    13. question: What was it like to receive the award? Did it give visibility to your work?
      1. answer: My most active phase of photographer was some years ago. I think a big part of why I received the award now is the integration of those photos into various Wikipedia articles, which took years. Since receiving the award journalists have contacted me for interviews
  6. Anyone who wants to present in next month's meeting may ask to be on the agenda! There are slots for specific presentations
