Global rename for Jeff G.
- Wiki: meta.wikimedia.org (list 'crats • bot policy • summary • 'crats rights)
- User: Jeff G. (talk • edits • logs • UserRights • activity • CentralAuth • email • verify 2FA)
- Not ending before 31 October 2021 20:09 UTC
Dear Wikimedians, I have been a global rollbacker for two years, and a VRT (formerly OTRS) permissions member for four years. I contribute to SRG frequently. I am familiar with, and I agree to abide by, global rename policy and global renamers policy. I have 487,800+ global contributions over the past 14+ years. -- Jeff G. ツ (please ping or talk to me) 20:09, 17 October 2021 (UTC)
- Strong support despite failing an RfA on Commons five times for absolutely ridiculous reasons, Jeff G is still quite active x-wiki despite not being a sysop on a medium/large wiki and can easily be trusted. Thanks for volunteering :-) (or if I may use "ツ") SHB2000 (talk | contibs) 01:21, 18 October 2021 (UTC)
- @SHB2000: You're welcome. I adopted "ツ" as an acceptable easily-visible not-fully-sideways smiley-looking character that did not drain resources by being a file. -- Jeff G. ツ (please ping or talk to me) 14:18, 19 October 2021 (UTC)
- I know your hardwork in crosswiki areas, and I personally trust you. My Question: is what rename area experience you have, and like which project you want to help out. Sorry Jeff but I hope you understand these are my regular questions to any non-admin who applies here. I don't think commons have a username change page so I cannot gauge your activity in rename - related areas without asking. Thanks for the willingness to help. Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 09:42, 18 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Camouflaged Mirage: Thanks for asking. Renaming experience on WMF wikis is rather hard to get, due to the catch-22 of "you can't have the job if you have no experience, and you can't get experience if you don't have the job". However, I got enough to receive "The Working Man's Barnstar" for my "diligent efforts clerking the username change requests pages".[1] I also have opined on at least one username change for another person at SRUC[2] and at Talk:Steward requests/Username changes.[3] Also: my personal experience in using "Jeff G. en" to get the account of the former "Jeff G." here on Meta usurped to the current "Jeff G. (usurped)" in 2007[4][5][6], getting my account "JeffGent" on English Wikipedia renamed to "Jeff G."[7], 200+ account creations on English Wikipedia[8], and filing reports which led to the Foundation Global Ban of Hasive[9]; my Admin experience on Beta Commons, Wikimedia Outreach, the Test and Test2 Wikipedias, RationalWiki.org, TheTestWiki.org, Deletionpedia.org, and various Wikia Fandom wikis; my Bureaucrat experience on Test2 Wikipedia, TheTestWiki.org, Deletionpedia.org, and various Wikia Fandom wikis; and my non-wiki Network Admin, Private IP Registrar, Help Desk, Technician, and Consultant experience at Canon USA and other client and employer networks in the New York Metro Area have all helped me to prepare for such a precise, detail-oriented role. This is a global right, which will help out all projects, but the main interests of most of the Wikimedians I have helped have been on Commons and English Wikipedia. -- Jeff G. ツ (please ping or talk to me) 14:06, 19 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Jeff G. Thank you for your very in depth reply, I didn't know your extensive history on enwp (candidates from en will typically allude to when they apply). Support. Thanks for helping out. Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 08:30, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

Global IP block exempt for Mirinano
- Global user: Mirinano (edits (alt) • CA • global groups • crossactivity • verify 2FA)
I use Safari on my Mac and iPad to access Wikimedia. Recent global blocking has blocked editing from these devices. I'm temporarily logged in from Google Chrome, but I still want to edit in the familiar safari, so I request the global IP block exemption flag.
--mirinano (talk) 08:12, 19 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Mirinano: this sounds like a feature you enabled?
You can turn off iCloud Private Relay in Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Private Relay.
Apple Support article. — xaosflux Talk 13:50, 19 October 2021 (UTC)- @Xaosflux: Does that mean I have to turn on and off for each edit?--mirinano (talk) 10:12, 25 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Mirinano That, or turn it off permanently (or use Google Chrome for editing). Vandals and other abusers frequently abuse open proxies (like iCloud Private Relay) to hide their own IP addresses, and since the IP address is one of the very few anti-abuse mechanisms vandal-fighters have available, such IP addresses are often indefinitely blocked under the provisions of the NOP policy. Martin Urbanec (talk) 10:54, 25 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Martin Urbanec: hmmm... Okey, I understand that Apple iCloud Private Relay is treated as a proxy. If you say so, I'll turn this system off and edit. --mirinano (talk) 11:13, 25 October 2021 (UTC)

Global IP block exempt for Butcher2021
- Global user: Butcher2021 (edits (alt) • CA • global groups • crossactivity • verify 2FA)
I would like to edit from a country which has blocked wikipedia, thanks.--Butcher2021 (talk) 08:34, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- You were previously asked which country it was. Could you reply to that please? -- Amanda (aka DQ) 15:47, 20 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Butcher2021: How were you able to post here? -- Jeff G. ツ (please ping or talk to me) 20:43, 20 October 2021 (UTC)
- Probably through some vpn. --Zabe (talk) 20:48, 20 October 2021 (UTC)
- Depending on the country, Meta might also not be blocked (especially since it uses a different domain, wikimedia.org). ~~~~

Global IP block exempt for Winniemei
- Global user: Winniemei (edits (alt) • CA • global groups • crossactivity • verify 2FA)
Hi, I use Wikipedia on Chrome on a school computer, my IP was recently blocked (I think 25 September) and I just recently wanted to get back to editing some Wikipedia articles again. As such I was wondering if I could get IP exemption. Also, for some reason, it appears that sometimes it will show me the IP block message but other times not (like right now), so I was wondering if anyone could diagnose any kind of problem that is causing this issue. Thanks! --Winniemei (talk) 19:02, 24 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Winniemei Can you please provide an exact transcript of the block message, so we can assist you further? On hold until such transcript is provided. Martin Urbanec (talk) 10:57, 25 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Martin Urbanec Sure! It is not showing up right now, so I will put it here once it does. Winniemei (talk) 13:21, 25 October 2021 (UTC)
- In that case, Not done until the issue happens again. It's possible the block you were facing was only a temporary one, and expired already. Best, Martin Urbanec (talk) 16:39, 25 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Martin Urbanec That's what I was thinking too, but the error just popped up an hour ago again. Since it's not showing up right now, here's the transcripts (there were 2 distinct messages that appeared in different places): "Your IP address is in a range that has been blocked on all Wikimedia Foundation wikis. The block was made by Stanglavine (meta.wikimedia.org). The reason given is No open proxies: please read the FAQ should you be affected. Start of block: 13:42, 25 September 2021 Expiry of block: 13:42, 25 September 2024 Your current IP address is 136.228.207.173 and the blocked range is 136.228.200.0/21. Please include all above details in any queries you make." The other one is: "Your current IP address is 136.228.207.173 and the block ID is #482232. Please include this in any queries. Blocked users can edit their own user talk page, unless specifically disallowed from doing so (if you are not logged in as a registered user, this will be the talk page for your IP address). You can add (the unblock template, not posting since it would put it on this section) to your user talk page to request unblocking. If the block reason seems unrelated to you, it is possible you were affected by a software feature known as the autoblock. In that case, contact an administrator and they will do their best to remove the autoblock. Please note that, for technical reasons, removing the autoblock is not always possible. In such cases, you may need to wait 24 hours for the autoblock to expire. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have happened." Hope this helps! Winniemei (talk) 17:05, 25 October 2021 (UTC)

- Global user: Rizīka (edits (alt) • CA • global groups • crossactivity • verify 2FA)
I`m in mainland China and I use VPN,but it always blocked ,so I ask to unblock. thanks, --Rizīka (talk) 13:03, 25 October 2021 (UTC)
- Hello @Rizīka, it looks the majority of your edits are at English Wikipedia. Could you please first request a local exemption there? The process is explained at en:WP:IPECPROXY. Once the request is granted, we'll gladly consider granting a global exemption. Best, Martin Urbanec (talk) 16:42, 25 October 2021 (UTC)
Thanks. The reason I edit in EN Wikipedia is I didn`t know how to use vpn to get to Chinese Wikipedia. I really want to edit chinese wikipedia!
