Edit request for Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat/Header

This section was archived on a request by: ネイ (talk) 12:36, 10 March 2018 (UTC)

Regarding Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat/Header, I would like to request for the following edits.

  • "Requests for CentralNotice banners and campaings" should be "Requests for CentralNotice banners and campaigns".
  • "add a link to the permanent link and the history of the page being imported" is unclear. Should be re-written to clarify whether it means "add a permanent link to the page being imported and permanent link to the history of the page", or "add a permanent link to the history of the page being imported".

Since this is my first time submitting a request to edit protected pages on Meta-Wiki, please let me know if this is not the correct place to request. Thank you very much.--ネイ (talk) 12:06, 10 March 2018 (UTC)

Text edits made, and hoping that assists. If you have a specific set of words, then feel welcome to suggest them on the talk page.  — billinghurst sDrewth 12:24, 10 March 2018 (UTC)
Thank you. This is sufficient in my opinion.--ネイ (talk) 12:36, 10 March 2018 (UTC)

Request for banner "The woman you never meet"

Hi!
I would like to know if someone could help me with the banner for the contest "The woman you never met". I've already asked for it in the Central Notice Request, but they send me here in order to solve this quicky. Thank you very much for your time.

Xnosis87's usage of Thanks tool

Can anyone here review Xnosis87's usage of "Thanks" tool? This user thanked me for those edits at User talk:Pathoschild, the same page where the user made a comment there. This user is also is thanking one of globally-locked users, Ultraman87, several (or more) times. I'm unsure whether Ultraman87 and Xnosis87 are related, even when their usernames contain "87". However, before Ultraman87 was globally locked, Ultraman87 overused the "Thanks" tool. I thought about requesting for CheckUser info, but I think the matter about Xnosis87 should be solved first.

Thanks. (Ironic, ain't it?) --George Ho (talk) 05:03, 10 March 2018 (UTC)

For what purpose? If you are being thanked and it is problematic for you, then please turn off your thanks, temporarily or permanently. I don't see any need to pursue such a minor matter.  — billinghurst sDrewth 11:30, 10 March 2018 (UTC)
mute may be more effective for a single user. — xaosflux Talk 12:31, 10 March 2018 (UTC)
@George Ho: You can feel free to report this at RfCU, user didn't seem any edits abuse since last year from now on at here while blocked on enwiki, it doesn't seem need any local admin or global steward action is required at this moment. As Billinghurst and Xaosflux have stated at above, you can turn off the thank notify by clicking on the "Preferences" setting --> "Notifications" button --> "Notify me about these events" section below and untick away the "Web" (and/or "Email" as well) square box at the "Thanks" selection. SA 13 Bro (talk) 01:35, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
@SA 13 Bro: Not certain why you felt the urge to add to the answer that had already been answered by two admins. I also don't know why you would refer the user to ask for a checkuser, that would appear to be poor advice in this case. As a former checkuser here and other wikis, I would have provided such advice if I felt that it was worthwhile.  — billinghurst sDrewth 08:41, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
@Billinghurst: I was thinking about "This user is also is thanking one of globally-locked users, Ultraman87", which George Ho has mentioned at above, so I am just curiosity want to know the diagnosis whether is related to other locked user or not. If my urge advice are clearly useless, then I make the apologize, sorry. SA 13 Bro (talk) 09:40, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
... and you don't think that was considered? Checkuser is not for fishing, and someone overly thanking someone may have elements of annoying, it alone doesn't qualify for checkuse The tool is to be used to fight vandalism, to check for sockpuppet abuse, and to limit disruption of the project. There are always those fiddling and doing things that someone will query, the mature response is to not get caught chasing puerile inconsequential actions.  — billinghurst sDrewth 10:19, 12 March 2018 (UTC)

ZUWP date stamp is using the wrong month

For over half a year I've been editing daily in the Zulu WP: fixing red links, creating categories, etc. With very little knowledge of the language (isiZulu), I just now noticed: the month in the date stamp is incorrect: uMbasa is not March but April. The correct name for March is Ndasa. This information is based on page content in ZUWP and also the Oxford School Dictionary isiZulu-isiNgisi/English-IsiZulu, South Africa:Oxford University Press, second edition 2015, p. R10. The incorrect month is currently appearing on:

The ZUWP has no Admin and is tended by the Small Wiki Monitoring Team. As I'm not sure how to proceed after posting here - your kind assistance is appreciated. -- Deborahjay (talk) 09:50, 12 March 2018 (UTC)

@Deborahjay: You may need to report this issue at SRM. SA 13 Bro (talk) 10:15, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
Actually that advice is not correct this is not locally controlled. @Deborahjay: The corrections need to be made at translatewiki: and they are the pages "Mediawiki:March" and "Mediawiki:April". You will need to create an account, so when logged-in then get into the translatewiki:Special:Translate components, change the language to Zulu, then search for March and April  — billinghurst sDrewth 10:31, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
@Deborahjay and Billinghurst: And actually you change the pages "Mediawiki:March/zu" and "Mediawiki:April/zu". I personally think it would be worthwhile for you to have an account there and to have translator rights there, Deborah. But I'm happy to do this if you'd prefer. StevenJ81 (talk) 14:02, 13 March 2018 (UTC)
Thank you, @StevenJ81:, I followed through on that yesterday and gained some familiarity with the scene at translatewiki.net, where the lack of participation among speakers of isiZulu is even worse than at ZUWP. So I'm glad to be aware of it before I make another approach to Wikimedia ZA in hopes of making contacts, certainly in advance of the upcoming Wikimania 2018 which is on their turf. And between us - my tacit goal is to get the ZUWP in great shape and turn it over to the locals, then return to ladwp where I arguably belong.. I did post a support request there in hopes of getting the changes expedited in the absence of any review process; I posted a dictionary citation on the talk pages and if that isn't convincing, I'll take a digital photo of the dico page and upload it! -- Cheers, Deborahjay (talk) 14:52, 13 March 2018 (UTC)
@Deborahjay: You don't really need a support request. If you have translator rights, just do it. If not, I will. Let me know. StevenJ81 (talk) 14:59, 13 March 2018 (UTC)
@StevenJ81: I made those two translation fixes yesterday (my first day) - the Support request was for what I didn't understand from the FAQs: if ZU is unsupported and has no reviewers, what's the process by which the new translation (which are by no means cosmetic in this case) will go live in the date stamp? ALSO, I happened upon "MediaWiki:January-gen/zu" (all months, all languages) and I have no idea where this is used - and for ZU, more important, whether it should reflect the actual isiZulu month names or the English-cognates which are also found in my ZU dico. Basically I'll need some clarifications so I can do the maximum with my limited ZU, besides my non-native Hebrew. -- Deborahjay (talk) 16:59, 13 March 2018 (UTC)
@Deborahjay: As far as I know, the changes will go live on their own, usually 1–2 days after you change them in translatewiki.
As far as MediaWiki:[month]-gen goes, in some languages (Latin, for example), it's proper to use the genitive in writing the date.
  • In Hebrew, if the nominative month name is ניסן, the genitive month name is בניסן. That`s not really a true genitive, linguistically, but it allows one to simplify the code in writing the date. StevenJ81 (talk) 17:12, 13 March 2018 (UTC)

@Herbythyme and Billinghurst: This category was deleted by consensus at the 30 Dec 2017, but more 1900 user talkpages still marked by this category. You need help for clarifying and deleting these pages? What is the final process? "Plain vanilla" can be deleted, and "anything with conversation" should be kept and moved <where>?--Kaganer (talk) 23:57, 12 March 2018 (UTC)

Done The deleted category has been emptied. — xaosflux Talk 03:53, 13 March 2018 (UTC)
  • Comment Comment The plan was for anything with conversation to be retained, no one said anything about moving them, so presumably that would just be removing the category from those retained pages. MA was going to do something last I recall. Xaosflux are you able to discriminate based on size?  — billinghurst sDrewth 03:41, 13 March 2018 (UTC)
@Billinghurst: the only thing I've done so far (~500 left to go as of now) is remove the redlinked category. Also, this category was being populated by non-substd uses of Template:Checkuserblock, now edited. The list of pages updated in in Fluxbot's contribution history. — xaosflux Talk 03:45, 13 March 2018 (UTC)

The point was not to just remove the category but to delete the associated pages based on size/time. As stated on RfD I could somewhat build a list of pages. Removing the category is not enough. Can we please have those pages deleted as well and, if not, revert the bot changes? —MarcoAurelio (talk) 11:51, 13 March 2018 (UTC)

Service: Meta:Requests_for_deletion#All_content_in_Category:Indefblocked_Meta_usersMarcoAurelio (talk) 11:53, 13 March 2018 (UTC)
@MarcoAurelio: readding the deleted category (by way of reversing the bot edits) is certainly do-able, but as these were already extracted in that quarry export you did is this needed? — xaosflux Talk 12:54, 13 March 2018 (UTC)
Well, certainly not //if// the query I did is okay :) I mean, if we're okay with pages with less than 1000 bytes of content can go (the unblock template and a bit more of text), we can process those pages indeed. OTOH if the query is not okay, I guess that with a bit more of work (user is blocked = true AND user talk page $value) we can get some more results. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 20:56, 13 March 2018 (UTC)

It is common to block obvious spam or vandalism accounts without warning or notice on Meta. Looking over the user's contributions, I can certainly understand why Shizhao blocked the user. Buenas Tardes

Hola.

Gracias.--Marrovi (talk) 19:34, 25 March 2018 (UTC)

Has my userpage been contrary to META policy?

Recently, User:-revi deleted portions of my userpage claiming that they would contradict META policy. This is about a string of difflinks pointing to verbatim quotes of other Wikipedians about me, which frankly are not flattering. Now I don't think that this contradicts Wiki policy in any way, after all, it serves only to quote verbatim what others have said about me. Sure, those who committed the insults won't like to be reading them, since it makes obvious that they've committed a mistake, but since when I report these, I'm the one who gets blocked (EDIT: In fact indeffed --Mathmensch (talk) 11:21, 24 March 2018 (UTC)), I don't see another way to deal with them. Hence, I'd like to appeal against the decision that they are contradicting META policy, as recommended by User:-revi, see here. --Mathmensch (talk) 11:20, 24 March 2018 (UTC)

Comment Comment Revi would be correct to remove such quotes. Meta is not the place for your battles, it is a coordinating wiki, and it is not the Wikipedias, nor the place to continue a battle from elsewhere. If you wish to contact an a person at another wiki who is willing to continue a conversation, then that is okay, it is not the place to continue a battle. Looking at some of your edits here it seems you have created personal userbox templates that we don't do here; edited an old essay with your opinion, which is not something typically done; and picked some fights. All I can recommend is to take a breath and review what you think that you are trying to achieve.  — billinghurst sDrewth 11:18, 26 March 2018 (UTC)

@Billinghurst: I would be grateful if you could point to the respective policies, but see also your talk page for the changes you've made.
Meanwhile, I don't see how it would be a "battle" to list things that others have said about me. It's a joke, and it signals other users not to take insults (CLARIFICATION: Against themselves--Mathmensch (talk) 06:33, 27 March 2018 (UTC)) too seriously. --Mathmensch (talk) 13:52, 26 March 2018 (UTC)
We do take insults seriously, and you will see that is the case in discourse here. You are at meta, and listing those local matters is purely provocation, and that is the problem. If you were looking to start a debate and a resolution with someone, then go and do it. Don't start parading your arguments on a xwiki user page, that is provocation.
You asked for a review by an independent administrator of local policy, and you got it. It might be time to be reflective, rather than combative, especially when you are parading in front of independent and experienced users.  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:28, 26 March 2018 (UTC)
@Billinghurst: Could you at least point to a policy that justifies your position? --Mathmensch (talk) 06:31, 27 March 2018 (UTC)
Come off it! This is a smaller wiki, and it is a coordinating wiki, tell me how it fits within our scope ... Meta:Inclusion policy. Point me to the policy that says that it is okay. Look at the practice and operation of this wiki over number of years to see how it is managed, look at deletion discussions, look at how the management takes place. Now think how it will work if we start trying to generate all the userboxes for every language wiki, for every sister wiki. As I explained on my user talk page, you can use {{userbox}} to decorate your page if you so choose, but stop with the gratuitous templates.  — billinghurst sDrewth 09:38, 27 March 2018 (UTC)
"tell me how it fits within our scope": "Documentation and discussion concerning the Wikimedia Foundation and its projects", but essentially anything on that page will do. --Mathmensch (talk) 06:40, 29 March 2018 (UTC)
I second the comments by -revi and billinghurst, and would additionally point you to the WM:NOT guidelines, particularly #10—13. The dispute you had was relevant to English Wikipedia and that is where it should be resolved. Green Giant (talk) 09:33, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
And I should add that this global userpage shall be transcluded onto all other wikis. --Mathmensch (talk) 13:58, 26 March 2018 (UTC)
That is correct. That still doesn't have mean that we start populating with gratuitous userboxes, please keep that as a local practice at your wikipedia of interest.  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:28, 26 March 2018 (UTC)

Not done time seems to have resolved this issue.  — billinghurst sDrewth 11:55, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
I have several foes among LTA people, not only Liza Veniza (talk · contribs). At any time any of them may come to my user: page (visible in two hundreds wikis and indexed in search engines) and bring to it the same hell as happened there. I spend my time fighting vandals on Meta, but why does the site deny me reasonable forms of protection? I do not request sysop-only protection, indeed! Only against IPs and fresh vandal accs. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 16:52, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
@Incnis Mrsi: your page history doesn't show anyone has edited it at all - as for all of all those other users, if they have issues they need to speak up. — xaosflux Talk 18:01, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
As a general comment, if we are going to do anything with protecting user pages as they are displayed crosswiki, I would much prefer we write an abuse filter that restricted all anonymous editing to user pages rather than the occasional user here and there.  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:58, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
@Billinghurst: and anyone for reference, enwiki has a filter that basically does this already if we wanted to import it. w:en:Special:AbuseFilter/803. — xaosflux Talk 02:05, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
Yep. Was more putting this into a general context for conversation rather than focusing on the aspect of an abuse filter. That said, why would we implement something where there hasn't been an issue either for the user pages, not the templates used on the user pages. In wiki spirit, we do try to not run a shutdown shop.  — billinghurst sDrewth 06:30, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

@Billinghurst: and where is your projected abuse filter now? Incnis Mrsi (talk) 09:09, 14 April 2018 (UTC)

Don't need smartarse comments to me thanks. I put something out to the community to discuss and neither you nor anyone else took on the discussion. Administrators run the tools and undertake community consensus. FWIW before I even saw your comment I was importing enWP's filter and configuring it.  — billinghurst sDrewth 09:21, 14 April 2018 (UTC)
I didn’t take on because I have not privileges to manipulate abuse filters. Give me some privilege helpful with it, please, and then demand some contributions better than sneaky comments. I have good skills in regular expressions and formal logic and, of course, could do it but currently am virtually nobody here whereas you are sysops. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 12:55, 14 April 2018 (UTC)
I didn't ask for you to write abuse filters, I stated about having a discussion; and that has not occurred. I expressed a desire for a conversation and community consensus prior to removing the designed ability for users to freely edit general user namespace pages.  — billinghurst sDrewth 03:12, 15 April 2018 (UTC)
