Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat/Archives/2020-04

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Prohibit some long usernames?

I proposed to:

  • Prohibit creation of username which is longer than 40 characters and contain some keywords on Meta
  • Prevent new accounts (<4 days) with such usernames to edit Meta (targeting autocreated accounts)

This may not completely stop the abuse, but may reduce the negative impact by vandals.--GZWDer (talk) 18:41, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

  • Hey GZWDer, this is the request for help page. Proposals of this type would be most appropriate in the form of a request for comment because community consensus would be needed. ~riley (talk) 18:48, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
  • So per ~riley, and also if we can avoid it I would rather not have a new local username policy. We are in a big need of a global one, but local policies do not really make sense since SUL finalisation was completed. --Base (talk) 01:44, 2 April 2020 (UTC)
  • I think I know what OP is driving at, to reduce usernames like XXX have XXX19 and must go to h*** something like that, I had been blocking so many of them recently. However, per ~riley, this needs RFC and I rather not as this seems to mandate a global username policy which by itself isn't feasible (due to SUL) and even if feasible, unlikely to pass. I will rather we manage by blocking, RD/OSing, locking/supressing the accounts and we might alter the filters that we have if needed as well as changing the blacklists. Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 13:19, 2 April 2020 (UTC)
  • Vandals would simply shorten their usernames to 39 characters. The only result of this would be to bother some volunteers on other projects (since this proposal would effect Meta only) who wouldn't be able to take part in discussions here. Also, as ~riley said, this is not the proper place to make such proposals. It would require a RfC. Vermont (talk) 18:22, 2 April 2020 (UTC)

I propose to indefinitely semiprotect this page. Most recent edits are vandalism and a legitmate global block or lock requests (include e.g. requests by public figures who do not edit Wikimedia project to lock impersonation accounts) may be handled by Email or IRC.--GZWDer (talk) 05:29, 3 April 2020 (UTC)

  • It's really not the place of Meta admins to be doing long-term protection of steward pages, imoh. The protection log only shows precedence for short term protection and because the page acts as a honeypot, I think leaving it as is, is most appropriate. If you think it should be, I recommend posting on the Stewards' noticeboard. ~riley (talk) 07:54, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
    • Seconded ~riley. I am inclined to leave it open per honeypot and there are many valid requests from well known, established users who just cannot edit SRG which I transferred. I am also not inclined to touch meta pages regarding to stewards. I think since the last steward who protected Tegel used 1 day protection, I think the stewards had decided against long term protection. I don't see what else we can do here but to watch, which I will. Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 08:53, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
  • Comment Comment LTAs are going to LTA, and I would much prefer that they did it there on an intensely watched page where they can do little damage, and can be quickly managed. Anyway, as said stewards can manage their pages.  — billinghurst sDrewth 21:48, 3 April 2020 (UTC)

About User:Derslek page

Hello All! Many of you may not know, but we had a problem with this user on the Tatar Wikipedia. The problem is currently settled (for more see this, this and WP Signpost).

I thought the problem was settled until I found an inscription in three languages on the user's personal page, where the user focuses on ethnicity and labels me, two stewards and two other users. Words in Russian are especially offensive. I want to urge administrators to take immediate steps to exhaust the attacks on us. Kindly, --Mehman 97 20:55, 6 April 2020 (UTC)

Fix categories of Legal/Legal Policies

Hi!

Can you please fix Legal/Legal Policies categories for translations, turning

into

Since I am involved, I shall not close. Can an uninvolved sysop close this. This is disruptive and the user had been repeatedly posting such statements about at first a trwp b'crat block them on trwp, and progresses to meta admins abusing power. May someone review, thanks. Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 13:45, 25 April 2020 (UTC)

Not me, that is the space for the conversation, and they are entitled to their opinion, and to start the conversation. Contributors are allowed to be painful and to prosecute a case. Is it out of scope? If not, then it should stay, whether I agree or not.  — billinghurst sDrewth 14:14, 25 April 2020 (UTC)
Of course it's within the scope here, I am asking for speedy close to prevent further disruption by a totally unmerited RFC. I am concerned that this RFC had gone off-topic and their userpage is problematic. I agree to an extent with you that it should stay then. Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 15:10, 25 April 2020 (UTC) (Expanded on 15:54, 25 April 2020 (UTC))
Not done I don't see a reason to close it. If you believe that ~riley's actions were appropriate, then state as such, and when commentary has ended on the page an uninvolved editor/admin will close it. We do not close RfC's because we do not like them or because we believe they're unfounded; we're not here to censor people. Regards, Vermont (talk) 15:56, 25 April 2020 (UTC)

Mark User:Tgr/WMHU 2019 report for translation

Hi! We'd like to experiment with using meta for translating Wikimedia Hungary reports (traditionally we have used Google Docs, but some pople have complained that they could contribute more if there was a "bite-sized" translation interface, and the Translate extension seemed like the easiest way of achieving that). If that's an unproblematic use of Meta, please mark User:Tgr/WMHU 2019 report for translation (the source language is Hungarian / hu). Thanks! --Tgr (talk) 13:57, 25 April 2020 (UTC)

Done Typically we would have it in its final home, though we can do it where it is.  — billinghurst sDrewth 14:05, 25 April 2020 (UTC)
@Billinghurst: The source language is still 'en' not 'hu'. RhinosF1 (talk) 14:08, 25 April 2020 (UTC)
Yes, was just undoing it. Need to dig a little deeper, but it may be welded to the base language of the wiki. I forget.  — billinghurst sDrewth 14:10, 25 April 2020 (UTC)
Thanks! It's an experiment, didn't want to put it under a "serious" title. Previously we have uploaded reports as PDF, I want to see if the translation workflow provides enough extra engagement to be worth the overhead. --Tgr (talk) 14:16, 25 April 2020 (UTC)

Done Had to dig into both Translate's and MediaWiki's sourcecode, but managed to find the right way. @Billinghurst: You need to use Special:PageLanguage to set the page's language to Hungarian, and then make it for translation like you usually do. Due to what I consider a breach of Meta:Civility by this user to their global user page, I have reverted their edit (again) and inhibited their ability to edit their user page for a period of time. The community over a period of time has applied a standard to global meta user pages due to their global nature, with this standard arising through our general practice and discussions for requests for deletion. The instruction that I provided to the user was that they could have statements as subpages, and link to them, however, they believe that they should be able to have their accusatory statements for all wiki display.

Putting this here for the discussion of admins, and for their review. It is not an action that I like to undertake, though feel that it is our general approach at this time.  — billinghurst sDrewth 08:52, 26 April 2020 (UTC)

No issue with the block, although I am as involved as billinghurst (or more). I was asking a close of the RFC partly due to the combination of his userpage + edits elsewhere which by creating the RFC on admin abuse, I am seeing a general disruptive pattern. If it's not for meta:civility it can be for disruptive editing. Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 08:55, 26 April 2020 (UTC)
Meta:Scope or Meta:Civility has nothing against sharing information about your Wiki-past/history on your page. I am not sharing information about the partners I date, I am not sharing info about someone else, exposing their privacy. Even the ones who shared what football they support are not prevented from doing so but when I share info about my Wiki-history, Wiki-profile, Wiki-activity that becomes a problem? MetaWiki is a place where users (including stewards, admins etc) may look at my page and for some reasons (like requests) may need to look at why I am blocked. Sincerely yours, --Ruhubelent (talk) 09:25, 26 April 2020 (UTC)

Comment Comment I see that we have Request for comment/Admin Billinghurst is abusing power - limiting/editing my userpage for no reason. Can I ask that this be moved, preferably without a redirect, to the Meta: namespace Meta:Request for comment/Admin Billinghurst is abusing power - limiting/editing my userpage for no reason as this is local issue, not a global issue.  — billinghurst sDrewth 09:04, 26 April 2020 (UTC)

Moved to Meta:Requests for comment/Admin Billinghurst is abusing power - limiting editing my userpage for no reason and Meta:Requests for comment/Meta admin ~riley is abusing power also. ‐‐1997kB (talk) 09:17, 26 April 2020 (UTC)
It seems my userpage is more of a `global` issue than an `assertion` about an admin abusing his/her power :D:D:D:D LoL. --Ruhubelent (talk) 09:25, 26 April 2020 (UTC)
Not sure what you are meaning. My action is local, the admins rights are local, any deletion discussion would be local that makes it a local RfC. The decision back when was that a meta user page would be made global, there was no other commitment.  — billinghurst sDrewth 10:38, 26 April 2020 (UTC)
