  • Personal info: Hi. I'm Peter, and I've been an active user on the Wikimedia Foundation for several years. Originally a sole contributor to the English Wikipedia, I became gradually active on Wikimedia Commons, Meta, and a few other sites where I help out with various routine actions, including vandal-fighting and spam prevention. I'm also active on the volunteer response team, with some of my cross-wiki edits being related to my involvement there. I can assist with the various routine steward tasks that arise, including Steward requests, and assisting with preventing cross-wiki abuse.

I have a fairly fluent understanding of the steward policy, including the privacy policy, as well as knowledge of the technical aspects of the tools involved. The sovereignty of individual projects is a principle I strongly believe in, and the need to observe local community policies and practices is something I have and will continue to observe. Furthermore, the need to work patiently to amicably resolve any disagreements which may arise is important. Patient discourse is something I have experience in, both in real life and through my work with OTRS.

I am also an active user, and often idle in a number of Wikimedia IRC channels, including #wikimedia-stewards and #wikimedia-admin, so I can be available for emergencies. My user name is fully unified, with the exception of the Wikimedia Foundation website which is separate.

  1. I am sorry, sometimes you over react to somethings and aren't the best with handling users. You seem to take a while to respond on IRC too sometimes which contradicts the above statement about you being active on it. You generally idle.Joe Gazz84 00:13, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Are you sure that this isn't just you misunderstanding most of what he (and about everyone else) says? Granted, even so effective communication is something he might want to work on, but I feel that he does that well. Also, looking at the requirements for being a steward I don't see anything about having no life being required, so why is the fact that he isn't on 24/7 a problem? Ajraddatz (Talk) 02:30, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have never had that problem with this user. Mind you I have rarely seen you on while he's talking, so I would not be surprised to find that he leaves the account on all the time and just is away when you're on. Passing ships in the night, I suppose. Sven Manguard 02:34, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
He's often active on IRC when I am. Perhaps you're just in a different timezone. Lara 05:18, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Peter's is in the IRC for the most part of the day in several channels at once, I haven't seen him not respond to a question directed towards him yet. I have no idea what you mean by when he over reacts to somethings, he generally offers great advice. Theo10011 11:51, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Alright to the above, I still have a vote and I still do not think IRC needs to my main oppose, I still get a vote and I still can have other reasons not required to post. I am actually on and do talk with Peter on IRC, generally in other sub channels. You usually aren't on when I am though... Joe Gazz84 21:01, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Fine, you don't have to say why your opposing, but why can't you?, If it is a valid reason than posting it can do no harm, hm? Tofutwitch11 20:11, 11 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  3. We don't need more "only-speak-English" stewards. Sorry. CasteloBrancomsg 16:15, 8 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
We need every helping hand esp. on IRC, independently from language skill which are less needed for fighting crosswiki vandalism. —DerHexer (Talk) 09:25, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
We have a lot of steward that can help on IRC in English. The question is: how can he help in requests made in another languages? CasteloBrancomsg 20:10, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Unluckily, that will always be a problem; we do not have stewards of all >250 languages. ;o) But it's of course very sad that not even native speakers from some larger wikis join these elections. But should we punish those who do that and helped out before, too? I wouldn't that, but that's of course just my decision. :-) Kind regards, —DerHexer (Talk) 21:23, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not punishing anyone, since to be a steward isn't an award and to not be isn't a punishment. I'm just choosing some stewards, and giving my opinions. And I think we should really consider in the future to have stewards covering all languages. And why we don't have this? Maybe because all of these discussions on Meta are too "English" for many people, when it should be multilingual. Just maybe. Finally, this doesn't have to be a problem forever, if we don't want to. 5. You knowingly allowed other editors to access your account on more than one occasion. DrKiernan 20:04, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Correction (not that I'm justifying it): It was one editor, not "other editors". However, it was a single lapse of judgement that was forgiven four months later. I remain truly sorry for the incident, details of which can be found at the 2nd RfA. Such an incident has never reoccurred. PeterSymonds 20:11, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
For how long did Steve Crossin have access to your account? DrKiernan 20:34, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I can't remember exactly; it was two and a half years ago. But it wasn't very long (a few days? It can't have been much longer, if it was even that long). This was partly the reason for the community's forgiveness. PeterSymonds 20:39, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That is exactly what I understood from the events of August 2008 too. However, I knew, well before that, that others or another had access to your account. I kept quiet before, at and after the RfA because of the extremely high quality of your content work and because being an admin is not a big deal. But being a steward is a different ball game. I'm sorry, but I cannot support. DrKiernan 20:50, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, but that statement is simply untrue. Nobody had access to my account before that. I don't know what you're talking about, sorry. PeterSymonds 20:51, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You claimed in October 2007 that an image uploaded to the english wikipedia en:File:Queen Alexandra.jpg through your account in May that year was not uploaded by you but by another and that this was not the first instance that that had happened[2]. DrKiernan 21:00, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I see what you mean. Well, yeah, it was unfortunate but it was long before I was aware of security implications involving Wikipedia accounts. I was still a very inexperienced and irregular user. It's hardly on the same level; I'm sure such things have happened to others who don't edit frequently. Once I became a bit more active, I realised that account security was important, but it's hardly on the same level as the 2008 incident. PeterSymonds 21:04, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Is two years not enough? Honestly, I think that he has been grilled enough over this... Ajraddatz (Talk) 03:31, 11 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  6. Oppose Oppose strongly He did not address the detail of Steve Crossin issue here. Disclosing account password is a serious matter. Stewards serves for the entire wikimedia project. Please remember that being forgiven in your homewiki does not mean that it would be the same in other communities. If he get elected, it may raise serious security risks. As a preventative measure, I strongly oppose to his election, until he address the issue.--Tomo suzuki 15:47, 11 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not really sure what you're wanting me to address. The issue happened two and a half years ago; all the details are disclosed at my enwiki 2nd RfA, above, and on my Commons RfA. It was a silly, one-off error of judgment that is a dark stain on my reputation. I've never made any secret of this incident, so I'll happily explain any outstanding concerns on my talk page. PeterSymonds 17:33, 11 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Good to hear from you. As for the "what to address" part, you gave us a link to Rfa log, but it's not focused on what you call mistake. If you think you are a good communicator, you should have at least given a summary of the incident. Secondly, and more to the point, the amount of time elapsed and your re-adminship at enwp do not necessarily justify your past mistake, because sysop at local projects and steward are really different things. I want to know exactly what you have done and will do in order to prevent the similar problem to occur in the future. As you should know, if someone else use your Steward account, it would cause catastrophe. I am still in doubt that this will happen to you. In Japan, we say "There is no need of the police if a word of sorry makes everything right (ごめんで済んだら警察は要らない)." Not all the cultures are generous to mistakes, even if it was an honest one. Based on the dialogue above, I do not think you are ready to exercise steward privileges over the cross-wiki and cross-cultural projects. --Tomo suzuki 20:49, 11 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure why people enjoy digging up old graves. I'm very familiar with what happened then and believe me, Peter was very remorseful for what had happened. He has learned his lesson and he moved on, as you can see his admin privileges were restored after his very successful 2nd RfA and no one has doubted his abilities since then. I for one do not agree with people being judged on their past actions for which they have already expressed remorse and have paid duly for...--Stemoc 14:48, 21 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  9. The sovereignty of individual projects? I would not be glad if Wikimedia F-n become a United Nations-like body. Nothing personal, but Oppose Oppose in principle. Incnis Mrsi 21:40, 27 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That wasn't quite what I meant. :-) I meant that projects which are in a position to run themselves, with local administrators/bureaucrats/checkusers, etc., should not have to be interfered with unless the matter is an emergency. For example, if a project has local active bureaucrats, it wouldn't be appropriate to rename a user using steward tools, but instead rely on the local community. I just wanted to clarify that point, so it is made clear. PeterSymonds 22:16, 27 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
