Congratulations, 1234qwer1234qwer4! You now have the rights of an administrator on Meta-Wiki. Please take a moment to read the Meta:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat, and Meta:Requests for deletion, but also Talk:Spam blacklist and Talk:Interwiki map), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings, or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-adminconnect. You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading although it doesn't always completely apply here at Meta. Please also check or add your entry to Meta:Administrators#List of administrators and the Template:List of administrators. You're also allowed to subscribe the metawiki admins private mailing list. Again, congratulations and welcome to the team. Matiia (talk) 18:03, 4 May 2021 (UTC)

Congrats for your adminship, and I can’t express enough how a hard working soul like yours would be essential for a scattered mind like me to continue on. Thank you for keeping eyes on actions not quite straight to what we aim for, or you have reverted unneeded action on user page. I am afraid principles we respect is very easy to attract envious thoughts, imho. Sei kein Arsch

Hallo 1234qwer1234qwer4,

Revision deletion

Hello. I hope that you're okay. Thanks for you attention on DerHexer's talk page, however I'd appreciate if we could discuss my (or anyone else's) sysop actions on my talk page or other appropriate fora and not in edit summaries such as you did here which I saw only by chance while checking recent changes, as no Ping/Echo notification was ever received. I think that absent patent cases of abuse or emergencies, it is a good idea to actually talk first to the sysop whose actions you dislike or don't agree with before undoing them yourself directly. It gives us the chance to rectify ourselves, offer more information/background, etc. Thanks for your understanding. Best regards, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 18:26, 16 June 2021 (UTC)

LTA

Hello. Unsure which LTA it's linked to but it's clearly xal:Special:Logs/block. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 08:38, 24 July 2021 (UTC)

@Minorax I'm hardly sure about that (which is also why I was warning them and did not block them immediately). Unlike the other xalwiki troll accounts, Пољка (talk · contribs) was only adding their signature without any string of random characters. Additionally, the usernames usually appear to consist of a random string of Cyrillic letters as well, while in this case, it is the Russian word "полька" (polka) spelt with the ligature љ, which is not used in Russian but still retains some meaning. SUL shows that there was no connected account on xalwiki either. @Martin Urbanec, since you locked the account, did you CU-connect it to other accounts from xalwiki? This one might as well be a generic troll. ~~~~

Requests for global blocks

I was going to put this at GRS though decided that it may be better presented here. So please excuse its framing for that page

You want it blocked yet the evidence hasn't been presented for that broader block, no indication of the timeline of the abuse nor the extent of the abuse, nor a useful duration for a block. Now you are saying it is at a neighbouring range. A global block should only follow where local blocks are not going to work, and there is no evidence of broader consequences. Can I encourage you to present that cogent case for the block with the data needed for the steward to be able to place a defensible block. Otherwise the steward is needing to go and review all the data without guidance, and the recent history of this page is that it just doesn't get done. In all good analysis, the sampling is just as important as the testing. I say this with the eyes if I was facing this request in my time of stewardry.

I say this not as negative criticism, more as guidance for placing a quality actionable request.  — billinghurst sDrewth 23:25, 20 August 2021 (UTC)

Hey, I got caught by the filter while trying to leave a comment on voy:es:Usuario discusión:Galahad, I guess this isn't the user/edit group addressed by the filter. Maybe it's possible to improve the filter? Thanks in advance, --Marsupium (talk) 12:37, 18 September 2021 (UTC)

@Marsupium Sorry for that, though I've only edited the filter twice (once just now because I found an unrelated bug). It appears that the filter is prohibiting the use of the word "captcha" for users with few edits (on the local project). @Billinghurst and Jon Kolbert, since you have been mainly maintaining the filter this year, maybe you know whether this can be safely removed? ~~~~
User:1234qwer1234qwer4 (talk)
13:33, 18 September 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for the information, that was indeed the problem, I used the word "captcha". It is kind of annoying to jump in such a filter without knowing the problem. Maybe the filter can be removed or made public. I guess it's easy to reverse engineer a blocking of "captcha", but a waste of time … Again, thanks a lot for the help!--Marsupium (talk) 13:52, 18 September 2021 (UTC)
@Marsupium, no the filter cannot be removed and making it public is very likely a bad idea per w:WP:BEANS. This filter is stopping a very prolific cross-wiki spambot and usually gets few false positives. ~~~~
User:1234qwer1234qwer4 (talk)
14:02, 18 September 2021 (UTC)
What I meant with removing is just the word "captcha". But I see … of course filters are always a cost-value ratio. Thanks again. --Marsupium (talk) 14:08, 18 September 2021 (UTC)
I agree that this word appears to be pretty generic and should be pretty safe to remove, though I would like to see what the filter maintainers think about it before proceeding. In any case, this is only one of dozens of phrases caught by the filter, which are usually quite specific though. ~~~~
User:1234qwer1234qwer4 (talk)
14:13, 18 September 2021 (UTC)
@Marsupium: I have excluded those accounts with gIPBE which should help at smaller wikis. I would encourage you to read User:Krinkle/Tools/Global SUL and create accounts on all open wikis that will save some hassle as account age is always an okay checker for spambots—my global.js will give an non-standard example of how I use it. [As AF can only easily assess user age per wiki, not globally, it is why I am pointing you to this tool.] FWIW the spambots were using that word for a while in the NTMSAR spam. I will look further to how we can lessen false positives based on your addition. That said this is a high gain protection against spambots, and picking the very few false positives from the list has been extremely difficult until recently. Now that we have shepherded through for reliable blacklist interception first, and global abuse filters second, we have managed to have logs that are not overwhelmingly ugly.  — billinghurst sDrewth 00:40, 19 September 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for the translation improvement in the Nigeria UG. Though one thing I haven't fully figure out is how big of an area should I put the translate tag between, like every chapter? Or just put one pair of tag in the whole article except of contents where there's no need to translate? I've seen both before, and not sure which one is more right. —— Eric LiuTalk 00:04, 30 September 2021 (UTC)

@Ericliu1912, the <translate></translate> tags are to be wrapped around everything except what doesn't need to be translated – a double linebreak will always create a new translation unit when marking for translation. One exception are lists, where it is usually helpful to translate every entry separately; see phab:T230291 for some suggestions for improvement of the extension. ~~~~

Question for an user with sequence of numbers and letters

Why did you delete the Wiki Bible related categories? On Wikimedia Incubator it is written that if I wanted to start a new project, I would go to Proposals for new projects. That's how I did it. Surely you will reject my proposal because you don't believe in the Bible. I've been blocked on Wikipedia indefinitely, I don't want to be blocked globally. So I'll stop here.

Leonardo José Raimundo (talk) 23:35, 29 October 2021 (UTC)

I'm not sure how the categories are supposed to be related to the proposals system, and they were empty anyway after the page deletions by another admin. ~~~~

Help

Hi Friend, I have registered on the page because my user Porot09 from Wikipedia in Spanish has been blocked and I do not understand the reason for said blocking. Can you help me? Edited many years ago and I have never done anything wrong to get the user blocked. Porot09 (talk) 02:53, 2 November 2021 (UTC)

@Porot09: Are you sure? Your block log in the Spanish Wikipedia is empty.SidChat2048 (talk) 03:44, 18 November 2021 (UTC)

Add {{User admin}} to your user page

You can add {{User admin}} to your user page, to show that you are an admin. SidChat2048 (talk) 17:09, 20 November 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for the information. ~~~~

Hi 1234qwer1234qwer4, I apologize for this false tagging. I didn't look at that page very carefully, which led me to mistakenly think that this is a spam. Sorry again for the trouble. Stang 21:51, 27 November 2021 (UTC)

Mass message about Requests for comment/Global ban for Musée Annam

Hello, can you explain me why you have sent the notification about this RfC? Why it's so important that 116 different wikicommunities should know about it? Even that where this user have made 0 edits? --Andriy.v (talk) 20:09, 27 December 2021 (UTC)

@Andriy.v In general, per Global bans#Obtaining consensus for a global ban, one has to [i]nform the community on all wikis where the user has edited. Since I only fulfilled a request by @NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh, maybe they know why wikis where the user might have had zero edits were included in the list (though you did not provide an example of such a wiki)? ~~~~
User:1234qwer1234qwer4 (talk)
20:15, 27 December 2021 (UTC)
@Andriy.v: I checked all of his 72 accounts manually, so if a wiki was listed, it means that he had made at least one contribution to that wiki. As 1234qwer1234qwer4 cited above, I had to [i]nform the community on all wikis where the user has edited. Thank you for your understanding. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 20:23, 27 December 2021 (UTC)
This is new for me. I can understand notifying wikis where the user have made 100 or more edits, but less than 10 edits is really a nonsense. In my 6 years of activity in ukwiki this is the first notification about a RfC for a global ban that I remember.--Andriy.v (talk) 20:53, 27 December 2021 (UTC)
I suppose the policy is made to avoid arbitrary activity conditions, but my talk page is definitely not the right place to propose changes to that. ~~~~

Mass reversion of babel migration

Hi! Instead of bulk-undoing the migration to {{user language}} and switching everyone back to a legacy template which now just wraps {{#babel:}}, it would have been better to either (a) fix the display issue in the template or (b) switch the pages to the newer {{#babel:}} feature that replaced both of them. —Pathoschild 15:56, 31 December 2021 (UTC)

@Pathoschild Hello, sorry about that; I doubt (a) is very helpful since the template is also considered "legacy" and would require switching to basically the same syntax as the Babel extension's (to avoid multiple identical headings). (b) should still be relatively easy to automate on the remaining uses of the {{user language}} template, but it seems that you had changed level 4 to level 3 in quite a number of instances for no apparent reason, so I guess this will need some more manual inspection. ~~~~
User:1234qwer1234qwer4 (talk)
16:05, 31 December 2021 (UTC)
At the time, some of the older Template:User <language>-<level> templates had a level 4 which we'd dropped from the new system, since there wasn't sufficient distinction between fluent (3), near-native (4), and native (N). The current level 4 was readded later. —Pathoschild 16:23, 31 December 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Filter 72

Hello. It seems we have a false postive on french wikipedia : [2]. I didn't find why. If you can check ? Supertoff (talk) 06:12, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

Multiple <br>s are very common in spambot creations (and have been part of the filter since way before I started editing it). The account age/activity thresholds are relatively low, so the page should be able to be published after a few edits. (Alternatively, the tags can be replaced by plain linebreaks.) ~~~~

Survey is over

The survey is already over. Please do not move any more Community Wishlist Survey 2022 proposal pages, like you did to Community Wishlist Survey 2022/Translation/Imporve language converter systems (eg. between simplified and traditional Chinese). You may move proposal pages again once the 2023 survey begins. GeoffreyT2000 (talk) 01:32, 12 February 2022 (UTC)
