Check AbuseFilter

Hey, my edits from my WMF account are being tagged and warned over at Strategy/Wikimedia movement/2017/People/Strategy coordinators I don't mind it much, but I think some users may be affected while editing that page (depending on the filter). Could someone check this out? Chico Venancio (talk) 21:29, 7 March 2017 (UTC)

It's due to the mention of your hair, which is in most cases not something mentioned here. I'm not sure whether it's worth removing it from the abusefilter, but it might be worth removing it from that page; note however users are autoconfirmed on meta rather fast (and once they are, they will not be affected). James Salsman unblock request (Spring 2017)

Unblock request: [1]

November 2016 request which got little attention: [2]

Given this has sat in the unblock queue for over 96 hours without comment or action from any admin, I'm going to assume this needs some discussion before going one way or the other. Opinions? Courcelles 22:59, 8 March 2017 (UTC)

For the record Anna made the comment that he refers to without knowledge of his block/history (and not intending to make an invitation to a blocked user). It probably goes without saying that the Foundation has no specific stance on the unblock. Jalexander--WMF 02:11, 9 March 2017 (UTC)
The last unblock request was just a couple months ago. I don't think that anything has changed in that time. Plus, I am slightly concerned by the somewhat deceptive nature of the request. Therefor, I oppose removing the block, and recommend that at least one year is placed between appeals. – Ajraddatz (talk) 02:59, 9 March 2017 (UTC)
6 months rather than a year between requests seem more reasonable to me. We are currently at 5 and a bit months. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 17:53, 9 March 2017 (UTC)
  • From his talk page, copied per request:
I did not intend to deceive anyone with this request. I would like to retain the right to make another unblock request in July ahead of Wikimania, because my pronunciation assessment project for language learning using the javascript version of pocketsphinx is very likely to be part of the the Google Summer of Code for CMU Sphinx this year, in part because of the very large number of student applicants who are already working on it, and because I am the organizational admin for CMU Sphinx this year, and I expect it to be ready by Wikimania in August, when I hope to formally propose a group effort to integrate it with Wiktionary. I'm going to be giving a demo at the International Speech and Communication Association's seventh Workshop on Speech and Language Technology in Education (SLaTE 2017) in Sweden later in the month, where I want to ask the experts to support such a proposal to integrate with Wiktionary. If the unblock requests are declined, I would ask in the alternative that I be allowed to work with another metapedian to post the proposal and respond to questions and comments about it on Meta, such as Doc James or Pete Forsyth, who has helped me in copying such proposals in the past. James Salsman (talk) 18:40, 9 March 2017 (UTC)

Courcelles 01:17, 10 March 2017 (UTC)

I don't think the request from a couple months ago set any precedent; there was simply nobody willing to strongly assert that the block should be lifted. But, I do find it unfortunate (and consistent with past issues) that James referred to being "directed" to participate in a discussion, without acknowledging that the "director" may not have been aware of his inability to do so.
IMO the best outcome here would be if James could find a Meta admin who is willing to take personal responsibility for unblocking him, and who will take an active role in coaching him through any important judgment calls, etc. that may come up, for some probationary period...a few months, I would think, or through one or two significant RFCs. -Pete Forsyth (talk) 06:44, 10 March 2017 (UTC)
I would be fine with this option (though I don't want to do the responsibility thing here). If the sockpuppetry and other issues stop, and there is a quick enough trigger to stop it again if it reoccurs, then my concerns vanish here. – Ajraddatz (talk) 07:13, 10 March 2017 (UTC)
Doc James has agreed to serve as a supervisor, see [3]. I'm willing to mash the buttons here and unblock under that agreement. Any objections? Courcelles 19:13, 11 March 2017 (UTC)

Request for MassMessage senders rights

Hi from another side. I need the flag for my contract work, at the moment I need to send this to this list which are users who are not members of any global groups save for ipblockexpemtion, not local bots or commons filemovers, who have at least 10 edits since 2017 began, are not blocked locally, are not users "CommonsDelinker" and "OctraBot", and the wiki in question has no more than 20 such users and isn't covered by other language or discussion coordinators already, both anonymous and registered are included. I gathered babel data for users where it was available via API and will try to send it in languages they speak better than English if I can get the translations. I will need to do some more massmessages while under the contract. Technically, I can give it myself via the main acc, but that is a bad idea, I was directed to use normal procedure to get the rights. P.S. Well, and a little comment. As I was being chosen for the role, I decided I have to abstain from further participation in the case above, I am trying to do better than what happened in the situation by using some fancy filtering of the targets list, unfortunately I cannot guarantee no people getting angry anyway, it is a fragile balance. --Base (WMF) (talk) 16:38, 18 March 2017 (UTC)

Hi. Please see Meta:Requests_for_adminship#WMF Office Staff and Contractors. Kind regards, --Vogone (talk) 17:25, 18 March 2017 (UTC)
Vogone, I know about the section of course, but as I said I was pointed here, by Quiddity (WMF). I am more comfortable to go through community process too, but pinging Jalexander-WMF, Mdennis (WMF) in case you want to manage this request staff way. A note: we, language and Meta strategy coordinators, do not have access to office wiki linked in the section so I cannot read what is written there on this matter. --Base (WMF) (talk) 18:48, 18 March 2017 (UTC)
We had these discussions already in the past, I don't think there is a need to re-discuss this. The community cannot know what your actual tasks are and which user rights you need for them, nor can it effectively deny such a request even if it wanted since the WMF hired you for doing this task. --Vogone (talk) 19:34, 18 March 2017 (UTC)
And since I participated in that one there's one less person pro community handling of this when concerning me, ok. I will poke internally then, no worries :) --Base (talk) 20:06, 18 March 2017 (UTC)
As far i can see here is yet a CN banner regarding that stuff? Honestly, this will likely cause drama therefore i suggest avoiding such mass messages if possible. My two cents. --Steinsplitter (talk) 20:12, 18 March 2017 (UTC)
I concur. Why does WMF insist on using MassMessages for this? --Rschen7754 20:35, 18 March 2017 (UTC)
Steinsplitter, Rschen, your two cents matter and are welcome, no one insists on anything and we are not bound to use this or that way. I will provide my reasoning for using MassMessage. There is a dilemma we face. We need to make sure that all the communities are aware of the process - it is something to impact our projects for the next 15 years, I'd say it is more important than a Wikimania announcement or even a BoT election; on the other hand we don't want drama. In order to see the banners you need to visit the wiki. A message on talk page triggers email notification, so even if are taking a wikibreak now you will see it. A message gives more specifics, provides more links and a points how to participate or help, banner just gives general sentence. The communities we, Meta coordinators, are trying to reach are really small, not considered communities at all by some, e.g. stewards would not grant a permanent sysop flag to anyone there. It would be impossible to get translations for all the languages targeted, the only people likely to help with it are likely to be the very people to be messaged, but we want to try to message them in the first language they know best we can translate to where data was available. What do you suggest to solve the dilemma with a win win? --Base (WMF) (talk) 21:48, 18 March 2017 (UTC)
"A message on talk page triggers email notification, so even if are taking a wikibreak now you will see it." If the user did not explicitly asked for it, it is a spam. English Wikipedia's definition and spamhaus' definition also says it is a spam. — regards, Revi 05:54, 20 March 2017 (UTC)
Also, I suspect SWMT might be getting an awful lot of emails. --Rschen7754 05:57, 20 March 2017 (UTC)
  • Thanks @Base (WMF): I'm sorry Quiddity sent you here but Vogone is right, we handle staff rights internally/ If you could shoot ca@wikimedia.org an email with the request and copy in either Guillom or Jan (or if you'd rather feel free to ask them directly to send it) we can get you the rights quickly if needed. The conversation about whether it's the right move is a tough one and can obviously continue if people want, there aren't any great options here and the balance of annoyance and trying to get as many people aware and engaged as possible is difficult and not the same for everyone (some would much prefer a banner for example, others a mass message etc). It IS important to try and make sure the tools get used correctly of course and that's something we can work to try and do no matter what tool it is in the end. Jalexander--WMF 05:32, 20 March 2017 (UTC)
By the way, the link provided by base above does not have list to the target. User:Base (WMF)/Wikis/MassMessage/Total is the list. — regards, Revi 06:02, 20 March 2017 (UTC)

Antispam filter on talk page

Something fishy here, my edit was legitimate and didn't even contain a link: https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:AbuseLog&wpSearchUser=81.123.183.254 --81.123.183.254 09:04, 24 March 2017 (UTC)

I think it is abandon. Well limiting regexby words boundaries might solve this, but I am not sure if it won't break anything instead. --Base (talk) 09:21, 24 March 2017 (UTC)

About speedy deletion request against user pages with political messages

  • I have requested some speedy deletion on some user pages about the political messages on their user pages. But User:Sänger disagrees with my request and consider that I'm a MoM for censorship. I request the admin's review about my request to speedy deletions. --Mskyrider (talk) 20:15, 30 March 2017 (UTC)

They are not eligible for speedy deletion and they don't fall deletion policy. Also, handling dozens of rfd is impossible (they must have a consistent outcome), so you might want to start an rfc instead. --Vituzzu (talk) 20:25, 30 March 2017 (UTC)

Social connection

Marathi Wikipedia has decided to go on a new stage i.e the social media connection for marathi Wikipedia. As like english Wikipedia having its connection deep in the social media marathi too wants to make a space among it's people. As a result i wanna ask for an email address for Marathi Wikipedia so that it can have its official social media accounts attached to it. As Wikipedia works voluntarily is there such system that the email address be operated by more than one person like the OTRS. Please assist me with the same.--Tiven2240 (talk) 09:28, 31 March 2017 (UTC)

You mean that you want to add Marathi to OTRS#Info? Ruslik (talk) 08:49, 2 April 2017 (UTC)
@Ruslik0: no, I wanted an email address for Marathi Wikipedia just as OTRS to make an official account of Marathi Wikipedia.--Tiven2240 (talk) 17:33, 2 April 2017 (UTC)
I do not think this is possible. English Wikipedia has only an OTRS address. Ruslik (talk) 16:11, 4 April 2017 (UTC)

#babel extension: boxes in languages that are not available (or not available yet) from translatewiki.net

Note: I'm not sure if I should really bring this here or Babel. I think I would test the proposition first (which needs a sysop). Then if I'm right, we can ask the community's approval at Babel.

A couple of different requests have come in at Talk:User language—one at #Ryu infoboxes and ruby and one at #Klingon (tlh) is broken—to fix Babel extension language boxes. See example at right. My suggestions for ryu didn't work, and I've come to realize that the reason is because ryu has not reached the threshold translation percentage necessary to allow the translations to be imported from translatewiki.net.

As a workaround, I think if we edit the local (Meta) copy of MediaWiki:Babel-3-n/ryu (and the rest), then we could make the boxes come out correctly here at Meta. There are two ways to do so:

  • Simply change the word "English" to "Okinawan"
  • Replace the text with the Okinawan version (which is available within a collapsed box back on that page)

I have the technical ability to do this, but I don't think this is within the remit of my limited administrator status. So I wonder if someone else wouldn't just test this out and see if it works—or give me explicit permission to do it myself.

Obviously, the ideal and preferred solution would be for ryu (and other languages in the same boat) to be translated sufficiently at translatewiki.net for the translations to be brought in. But absent that, perhaps we can ask the community if they would find it acceptable to allow the local translation of these boxes for this purpose.

Even in the context of the above, the question concerning a language like Klingon—which was purposefully frozen here and at translatewiki.net—is also a policy question. It's possible that this solution would be non-invasive enough to allow for Klingon as well, but it's also possible that WMF would prefer not to go there. I defer that to the judgment of others. (I have no skin in that game, by the way.) StevenJ81 (talk) 19:53, 27 March 2017 (UTC)

Having received no response, I tried it. It worked, as you can see. I will go ahead and change the remaining ryu boxes in the same way. I do not plan to touch the tlh boxes at present. StevenJ81 (talk) 14:49, 4 April 2017 (UTC)
Well, it is a wrong way to fix it as it fixes it just for Meta. Do search it on Phab, it is a known thing for not yet supported on TWN langs or something like that, I am sorry I did not have time to do it because of being busy with other stuff. --Base (talk) 18:28, 5 April 2017 (UTC)
@Base: That's not (entirely) the problem. Ryu is supported on TWN. But translatewiki:Portal:Ryu is also not quite right, for reasons I don't entirely understand. Still, even the copy that appears there—This user has ... knowledge of ʔucināguci—did not come here. And the reason it didn't is because not enough of the "core messages" group has been translated to trigger the import of messages from TWN to the Wikimedia projects.
So then you end up here with This user has ... knowledge of English, which is absurd on its face. If you want to say that the real Okinawan version shouldn't appear here until enough of the core messages are translated, I'm ok with that. but then we at least need the local copy to say This user has ... knowledge of Okinawan. StevenJ81 (talk) 21:58, 5 April 2017 (UTC)
I mean it is phab:T64714 which takes about 1 min to look for at Phab :) As to how to fix that in a good way it looks there is no easy answer, as just deleting the local hack which per that task has lead to that as far as I can see (I never really read the task before) will break back the global userpages :/ --Base (talk) 22:33, 6 April 2017 (UTC)
Well it does just fix it for Meta, but since this is a problem really just on Meta, that's not such a problem. The issue is that it fixes it only for that language and not any other languages affected. -- KTC (talk) 15:13, 7 April 2017 (UTC)
Sure. But I think the only real way to fix it across the board is for us to allow that one particular series of messages to be imported from translatewiki.net even if 13% of the "core MediaWiki messages" group is not translated. StevenJ81 (talk) 18:26, 7 April 2017 (UTC)
By the way, potentially this could be a problem on any seriously multilingual project, including Wikidata, Wikispecies, Old Wikisource, Beta Wikiversity and Incubator. But it's far more likely to be a material issue here, especially since user pages from here transclude elsewhere. So having a local fix here has some real value. StevenJ81 (talk) 15:08, 13 April 2017 (UTC)
I'm going to go ahead and modify the local tlh pages to read "Klingon" (in English, not in Klingon). I appreciate that Klingon is mostly not welcome here, and I don't necessarily even disagree with that. But as long as {{User language/tlh}} exists here and is used, and as long as tlh is a valid code input to {{#babel: ...}}, it's silly for {{#babel:tlh}} to say "English". StevenJ81 (talk) 18:30, 14 April 2017 (UTC)
