2023 Request for Pa'O Wiktionary[edit]

Wiktionary Pa'O has enough dictionary entries, so we request to open 2023 Wiktionary Pa'O, (Note: The Pa'O people are ethnic groups who work in the fields, and they are far away from the Internet, so they have very little knowledge about the Internet, also in Burma, not everyone can afford to use the Internet, because the cost of using the Internet is expensive, so some people who work in the fields cannot afford it. Also In order to be able to open Pa'O Wikipedia and Pa'O Wiktionary, I explained a lot to the Pa'O people to make them understand, so if want to ask them about something, can order me on their behalf.) thanks--𝓓𝓻.𝓘𝓷𝓽𝓸𝓫𝓮𝓼𝓪|𝒯𝒶𝓁𝓀 08:53, 28 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Determined, honest and passionate request for final approval of Sassarese Wikipedia (Wp/sdc)[edit]

Dear members of the Committee

First of all, I would like to wish you a happy and healthy new year. As you might remember, our community has already asked you several times (please see 1, 2 (2021), 3, 4 (2022)) for final approval of our test wiki to get out of the Incubator. But you still have not done it. I confess being quite disappointed, sad, kind of angry as well, because of that. It seems not fair. No offence intended. We meet the criteria. Please approve it. Finally. At last.

Arguments in favour:

  • Symbol support vote.svg Corsican and Sardinian Wikipedia editions were approved long ago. Sassarese is a transitional idiom between those two. Though being closer to Corsican (therefore sometimes seen as part of Corso-Sardinian dialect continuum or macrolanguage), it is definitely neither the one nor the other. It stands for itself. Sassarese has its very own grammar, vocabulary, sound, orthography, also literature tradition. So, it deserves a proper wiki edition.
  • Symbol support vote.svg About 96 % of MediaWiki's most important messages were translated into Sassarese. As well, 39 % of the respective core messages are available. (Please look here, comparable to Sardinian while there is a much lower percentage for Corsican.)
  • Symbol support vote.svg Although there are over 2000 Sassarese articles, it is still in the Incubator while there are dozens of 'full version' Wikipedias with a much smaller number of articles (cf. List), which is unequal. So, Sassarese must get a fair chance.

--Jun Misugi (talk) 21:57, 7 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I'm no admin or member of the comittee, but I am a maintainer of a test project too, and I must warn you that one of the first criteria to have a test wiki approved is to develop its activity, that is: at least three not-grayed out active users on Catanalysis statistics (Requisites for Approval, Sassarese Wiki Request). This does not seem to be true for now (it was back in late-2022). About your second argument, both the Corsican and Sardinian wikipedias were created before Incubator (Corsican page on Incubator, Sardinian page on Incubator), therefore they never had to meet any policy here established (as it was for most main languages like Portuguese, German, French). There are indeed 2000 Sassarese articles, but are they any good? Having a look through the list of articles (Sassarese Sardinian Prefix Index), most of them are dates, and have no content at all. I must say that not only the number of articles count for its approval, but also their quality (Incubator Manual), and that's why many wikis have been approved with much smaller numbers of articles, their articles have quality. But don't be discouraged with this! I've been there since 2020 and I'm still working on my test wiki and trying to gather new people, creating new quality articles and improving the wiki itself. Sassarese Sardinian will have its chance as every other language has. I know you can do it ;)

Verification of Wp/efi as eligible[edit]

Hello, kindly verify Wp/efi as eligible. Thanks.-- Samatics (talk) 19:19, 11 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Done. In general, eligibility issues are not special ones unless language is a special case(ex. non-independent dialects, artificial languages, extinct languages, ancient languages). It can be made concurrently with approval. --Sotiale (talk) 14:04, 13 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ok. Thanks.-- Samatics (talk) 15:16, 13 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Remove aliases `minnan` and `zh-cfr` for the Min Nan Wikipedia[edit]

Tracked in Phabricator:
Task T230382

The SRE team has an old ticket where it was proposed to remove these aliases. Could the langcom team look over the proposal and give approval/disapproval of the change? Thanks! BCornwall-WMF (talk) 20:46, 20 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Gurene / Frafra Wikipedia[edit]

After there was an expert verification and no objection on the Language committee mailing list for the approval of the Wikipedia in the language with the code "gur", this can go forward.

The title is not too important. After discussing it with the editors, I've defined "farefare" as the language's autonym in language name configuration files because it appears to be a more inclusive name. "Gurene" can be used in appropriate contexts; I count on the editors to make the right choice.

Congratulations :) Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 16:02, 24 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hey, could you mark this as approved at Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Gurenɛ then? Thanks --Zabe (talk) 00:11, 27 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

afro.wikipedia.org[edit]

Hello, I am requesting the creation of afro.wikipedia.org, an edition of Wikipedia that, while not a separate language per se, would give African Americans a place to build an encyclopedia based on their view of the world. Plus think of how fascinating it'd be for the rest of us! It'd double as a place where non-black guys could go to get answers to questions they've always had like why do black parents give "The Talk" to their kids. Americanfreedom (talk) 16:51, 21 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your efforts. I see your language project positively, but would like to see a few more months for approval. All recently approved Wiktionaries have over 1000 entries, and your project has been active for 3 months including this month. If the current activity continues for a few more months, I'm sure the approval will go smoothly. --Sotiale (talk) 06:16, 29 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Approval for Garhwali language Wikipedia[edit]

I want to ask you that when our mother tongue garhwali get listed as the list of approved Wikipedia, there are more then 30 articles in Garhwali Wikipedia in Garhwali language and i contributing on it . 2409:4053:2D1D:42DB:2B9:2C19:5526:5866 16:09, 29 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Wp/gbm Yakku3 (talk) 16:13, 29 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Unfortunately, there has been little activity there lately. The number of pages is important(also 30 pages are very small), but so is the sustainability of the community formed by active editors. --Sotiale (talk) 02:06, 1 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Approval for Banjarese language Wikiquote[edit]

Hello, Language Committee. Would you mind checking our proposal and doing the verification until approval? Thanks. Mnafisalmukhdi1 (talk) 01:23, 1 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Most of them look pretty good, but it would be better if there are supplement editings to the contents of the quote. One quote pages are too many. --Sotiale (talk) 12:03, 5 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Approval for Central Kurdish Wiktionary[edit]

Hi,

The Central Kurdish Wiktionary has been active for many months, and the language had already been verified. The Language committee has no objection to create it. Request for approval of Gungbe Wikinews[edit]

Hello

I think Wn/guw might be ready for approval. The project interests our community and we have moved a step further to add audio Wikinews (daily) to some of the news articles. With an average of 7 news articles per day for several months and a very active readers and contributors base, we find this project succeeding exceedingly once it leaves the incubator. Kindly look into it for approval. Thanks.-- Samatics (talk) 07:23, 7 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Rejection for Northern Tujia Wikipedia[edit]

Hello, Language Committee. Northern Tujia Wikipedia is too inactive and those who could read and write Northern Tujia can easily read and write Chinese, so Northern Tujia Wikipedia is recommended to be rejected. Details are in Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Northern Tujia#Discussion. John Smith Ri (talk) 08:33, 2 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You have meanwhile succeeded in creating the page, but I've gone ahead and deleted it again. Approval for Mandailing Wiktionary[edit]

Hi, the Wiktionary Mandailing community has been working hard for the past several months to add hundreds of entries. Now they're asking for their project to be launched. Please take a look and I hope the committee will approve it. They already have more than 1.000 entries now, and still increasing due to new contributors joining. Request for approval of Wolaytta Wikipedia (Wp/wal)[edit]

Wolaytta Wikipedia has been active for a long time. I think it is a time to approve and make Wikipedia more reachable to Wolaytta language speakers. Thank you in advance. Ella Lachow (talk) 08:43, 2 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

So far, you are the only contributor (and started three weeks ago). For approval, there needs to be continuous activity by at least several users over at least several months. --MF-W 10:51, 2 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I agree with @MF-Warburg. However, I'll add that the work done by @Ella Lachow till now has been quite impressive. The translation of the most used messages in translatewiki is done, and the Incubator articles are progressing nicely.
But yes, more people need to participate, and it should go on for a few months. Good luck, and let us know if you need any technical help! Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 17:03, 4 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Approval for the Mandailing Wiktionary[edit]

Hi, all. The language committee intends to approve the Mandailing Wiktionary (request). If there are no objections based on the language proposal policy, the domain creation process will start on March 30. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 19:12, 23 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

In my opinion, it's not active enough. --MF-W 11:48, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hello! We used to be active wp/btm/ but after some time the other wikipedia members had to focus on working outside the area and away from internet network access, Wikitionary Mandailing became our first debut again. After the release of the Mandailing Wikitionary, after this we will also try to activate Wp/btm as well together with the Mandailing Wikitionary IHLubis (talk) 05:36, 3 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I made a mistake when posting this here – we haven't received independent verification for the Mandailing Wiktionary yet, so it is on hold until we get that. Sorry! Jon Harald Søby (talk) 12:01, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jon Harald Søby What is "independent verification" ? Veracious (talk) 05:30, 1 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jon Harald Søby whether from active users or from groups?? IHLubis (talk) 05:39, 3 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Veracious, @IHLubis: Before we make the final approval for a language that is new to Wikimedia, our internal committee policy (which, as it turns out, is not specified in the language proposal policy – it probably should be) is to contact an independent expert who can verify that the language that is used in the project on the Incubator is actually the language the contributors say it is. We try primarily to find people who are academics at relevant institutions in or near where the languages are spoken. In rare cases where we struggle to find such a person, we may reach out to the affected community to ask for assistance, but this is done quite rarely.
As for verification for Mandailing, I am in touch with someone (with the aid of Wikimedia Indonesia), so hopefully it won't take too much longer before we have that and can proceed. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 13:14, 3 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes, I think so. The Gorontalo Wikipedia must also be verified by a linguist outside our community to confirm this before release. We proposed speakers of Gorontalo language experts who are also academics at the local university. I support Wiktionary and Wikipedia Mandailing for their immediate release. Thank You. Reason is in general same as the 4th rejection, the only "supporter" only wants to manually re-start copy-pasting tr.wikipedia contents and routhly transliterate em to be in Arabic scripts, they even don't know the mw:LanguageConverter exists.
