From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

You really have not read the warning in the wikitext of the main Sisterproject template? Or hand tremble? --Kaganer 20:28, 28 September 2011 (UTC)

I am sorry? I am in the middle of converting the wiki table markup into a template. At that article. I just got distracted for a few minutes. -- とある白い猫 chi? 20:29, 28 September 2011 (UTC)
Thank you, I do not understand. I'm sorry - just did not have to save that "strange" version.--Kaganer 23:22, 28 September 2011 (UTC)
I am working on converting various main page templates under a certain standard version so that information stays current on all translations. This is part of an effort to translate the main page into a templated structure. Russian for example is already done Main Page/ru. -- とある白い猫 chi? 23:25, 28 September 2011 (UTC)
OK, I complete translation. Should be redirect from Заглавная страница to Main Page/ru, or from Main Page/ru to Заглавная страница (Russian interface have direct link to Заглавная страница pagename). --Kaganer 00:22, 29 September 2011 (UTC)
You are welcome to replace the content of Заглавная страница with {{:Main Page/ru}} if you like if you feel the new design is sufficient and adequate. :) -- とある白い猫 chi? 01:25, 29 September 2011 (UTC)
Done. Unification - it's cool! ;) --Kaganer 13:40, 29 September 2011 (UTC)
:D I actually need help for the task. :) -- とある白い猫 chi? 13:33, 4 October 2011 (UTC)
Where is todo list? --Kaganer 14:24, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

New versions of Main Page

First stage (2011)

I think, many wikimedians will help you. For example:

(to be continued) I do search user for create main pages for more languages of etnic groups in Russia (/sah, /udm, /os etc). --Kaganer 15:32, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

I have been at a desperate search for translations. I have been somewhat successful with languages with a greater IRC presence but for others I am rather baffled. I could of course hunt down translators on their individual local wikis but that is far too much work on top of making sure template complies with everyone's needs. I designed the template structure to provide with all the content needed for the translation. I do not have a documentation for it but the task could be simplified as (this could be the to do list)...
  1. Going to Template:Other languages/Template:Main Page and clicking on the relevant red link and translating that.
  2. Once that's done the next task is to translate the English content on the sub pages. You can see what I mean in Template:Main Page/sr. Whenever the "Edit" links are clicked it will generate the relevant template to be translated and will automatically replace the /en usage the moment the /xx template is created. Sub template structure (edit links will update or create these):
    1. Template:Main Page/Intro
    2. Template:Main Page/World Heritage
    3. Information thread Template:Main Page/WM News (optional, but recommended)
    4. Template:Main Page/Requests
    5. Template:Main Page/Community and communication
    6. Template:Main Page/Core issues and collaboration
    7. Template:Main Page/Wikimedia Foundation
    8. Template:Main Page/Sisterprojects
I'd like to point out {{Sisterprojects}} already has a lot of translations done but they need to be templateified.
The fun part is once the translations are complete and we decide to add something to the main page, all non translations will display the English text letting translators know exactly what needs to be translated.
-- とある白い猫 chi? 16:33, 4 October 2011 (UTC)
I see. Good. I inform those who can. --Kaganer 16:55, 4 October 2011 (UTC)
/rue and /tt - in progress. --Kaganer 17:33, 5 October 2011 (UTC)
Mind you some languages has material that could be used from the current main pages they have. :) On the bright side {{Sisterprojects}} templatification process is complete with the help of multiple people. They still need translations here and there but at least it is no longer the complicated wikitable. -- とある白い猫 chi? 08:00, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
Any progress on these? :) -- とある白い猫 chi? 09:40, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
/ka is finished--Kaganer 12:16, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
Are you planning on expanding the translations to other languages? Many version of the main page still uses the older style unfortunately. -- とある白い猫 chi? 11:00, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

Second stage (2014-2017)

Template for new language (langcode substituted from user interface language):

  • {{subst:User:kaganer/mpt|zzz|en}}
    where
    1. "zzz" is language code of target language.
    2. (optional) language code for preload content, "en" by default.

Example:

{{subst:User:kaganer/mpt|zzz}} {{subst:User:kaganer/mpt|xy|ab}}

Thanks to creating Template:Main Page/zzz! For complete translation need also to create next pages (just click links and translate text to the right of the "=" sign):

and six links through Translate Extension:

If you can finish it, then it would be great. Very thanks before, --~~~~

Hello. Regarding this edit, have the other language versions of this page been updated, per the changes I made? Green Giant (talk) 01:08, 3 May 2017 (UTC)

Green Giant, {{translation2}} is part of obsolete translation system. This is unused currently. Your changes of base page shoulds be approved by translation administrator, after that every page with translations will be updated, and all sections what was changed in source page, will be marked as "obsoleted". All translatorswho participated in the execution of any translation will receive a notification that the page has changed.--Kaganer (talk) 01:19, 3 May 2017 (UTC)
Ah, that makes sense. How do I request it then? Cheers. Green Giant (talk) 01:39, 3 May 2017 (UTC)
Green Giant, E.g. M:RFH, or call any from translation admins directly. --Kaganer (talk) 01:48, 3 May 2017 (UTC)

I always learn something new when you help with translation!

Hi Kaganer! I just wanted to thank you for the edits like this one you've been doing today - I didn't know template:LM existed, or that the translation system could do things like handle translations of files. I'm so glad community translators like you are here to help out with translation-marking pages like the strategy pages in the best, most usable way possible (I'm particularly grateful that you are taking the time to do it even when doing it involves cleaning up not-so-perfect work staff like me have already done on it), and I wanted to let you know that your help doesn't go unnoticed, and that we are taking note of things you show us how to do better, so that we can do it right the next time we do it and hopefully reduce the amount of cleanup that falls to volunteers like you :) Kbrown (WMF) (talk) 12:30, 20 June 2017 (UTC)

@Kbrown (WMF): NP ;) Everything was done well enough. Just call me (or anothers translation admins) if you run into the need to check out the translation markup. --Kaganer (talk) 12:36, 20 June 2017 (UTC)

RfC translation

Hi. At Talk:Requests for comment/Clarification to CU policy we're trying to make the rfc translatable. I moved the text to a /text subpage and left the signatures in the main RfC page. Please let me know if that's correct or feel free to amend it as you see fit. Thank you for your assistance. Best regards, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 16:41, 4 August 2017 (UTC)

@MarcoAurelio: Done. --Kaganer (talk) 23:12, 4 August 2017 (UTC)

Adminship

Hello. Thank you very much for helping to keep translations updated and clean. I think adminship will be of much benefit to you so you can delete the pages yourself and will save us from having to do two deletions (one for the page, another one for the talk). Please let me know what do you think. Best regards, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 10:45, 9 August 2017 (UTC)

@MarcoAurelio:: That would be wonderful. With the implementing of the translation extension this issue grows. --Kaganer (talk) 12:41, 9 August 2017 (UTC)

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades... (our budget is smaller than Commons)

Kaganer/Archives, congratulations! You now have the rights of an administrator on Meta. Please take a moment to read the Meta:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat, and Meta:Requests for deletion, but also Talk:Spam blacklist and Talk:Interwiki map), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings, or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-admin @ irc.freenode.net. You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading although it doesn't always completely apply here at Meta.

Please also check or add your entry to Meta:Administrators#List of administrators and the Template:List of administrators.

Translation of "Template:Rapid Grants Tabs"

I have noticed that this template is not marked for translation. Is it intentional or not? If this template should be translated, please advise whom should I contact. HaythamAbulela 19:08, 4 October 2017 (UTC)

@Haytham abulela: See User_talk:I_JethroBT_(WMF)#Tab_names_in_the_grant_program_navbars. In my opinion, thesse templates is should not be marked for translation. Current scheme of grant pages design is very mixed, byt these navbars seen as "design only". That is, all content must be included into Template:GrantmakingNavbar/Content, for future integration of them in Template:GrantmakingNavbar. --Kaganer (talk) 22:10, 4 October 2017 (UTC)

Cross-wiki harassment

Защитить страницу

Здравствуйте, Павел!

Не могли бы вы установить защиту на редактирование моей страницы участника, до уровня, чтобы её могли редактировать только зарегистрированные участники, а переименовывать - только администраторы. Спасибо! -- K-Shlim Igorevich (talk | contributions) 11:18, 21 October 2017 (UTC)

@K-Shlim Igorevich: - а какова причина? Я не вижу никакой злонамеренной активности вокруг Вашей страницы. --Kaganer (talk) 20:45, 22 October 2017 (UTC)
@Kaganer: Я просто не хочу, чтобы мою страницу редактировали какие-то анонимы. Только зарегистрированные, так как анонимы - в большем случае, могут быть вандалами. Я решил что лучше защитить страницу лучше сразу. -- K-Shlim Igorevich (talk | contributions) 05:32, 23 October 2017 (UTC)

Editing WP brochure marked for translation (Translatewiki)

Prevet Kaganer, I was wondering I can have this brochure marked for translation in Translatewiki, failing that Meta. Actually, we will be translating this soon also for the Basque Education Program, so it would best if this also is marked for translation and arranged in Translatewiki if possible. Best regards --Iñaki LL (talk) 14:47, 12 December 2017 (UTC)

@Iñaki LL: TranslateWiki is for interface only, not for content pages. Translatable text for this broshure is there: outreach:Welcome to Wikipedia (Bookshelf)/2013 edition/text. But after finalization of translation someone should be create pdf manually (layout for desktop publishing is available in InDesign format; Scribus format.). --Kaganer (talk) 17:33, 12 December 2017 (UTC)
@Kaganer: Good, Спасибо! I will manage with layout. This gives me some 'peace of mind' for a while:p O I see I had actually started the translation, now one gets lost in the maze really... --Iñaki LL (talk) 19:23, 12 December 2017 (UTC)
@Kaganer: One more thing, how shall I download the aggregate segments for layout? --Iñaki LL (talk) 20:35, 12 December 2017 (UTC)
@Iñaki LL: Just copy/paste plaintext from outreach:Welcome_to_Wikipedia_(Bookshelf)/2013_edition/text/eu ? --Kaganer (talk) 23:31, 12 December 2017 (UTC)

Reversion of my edits

Dear Kaganer,

Staff explicitly do not have the rights that I removed from User rights. You reverted me which says they have rights that not all staff have now. Some like centralauth-admin have been unused for years. I urge you to read before you act. Thanks --Sau226 (talk) 15:50, 15 December 2017 (UTC)

@Sau226: You also remove 'userrights', 'centralauth-oversight' and 'centralauth-lock' rights. But "WMF Support and Safety" group currently have these rights. See Special:ListGroupRights. Page User rights is outdated and should be rewrited (maybe partially). --Kaganer (talk) 16:10, 15 December 2017 (UTC)
The page is talking about the "staff" global group. Support and Safety is a local group with its own page --Sau226 (talk) 19:01, 15 December 2017 (UTC)
@Sau226: Sure, your changes was restored. Thanks. --Kaganer (talk) 00:42, 17 December 2017 (UTC)
@Kaganer: No thank you --Sau226 (talk) 10:07, 17 December 2017 (UTC)

Translation request for New Readers Inspire Campaign-- and thanks!

Hi there! I'm contacting you because you've volunteered your time in the past to help translate Inspire Campaigns, or you've expressed an interest about helping to translate. We have a new campaign starting soon about new readers, as we try to encourage contributors to develop ideas on how to inform and invite people to use Wikipedia, especially in places where folks are not aware of it. There are two pages that will need translation:

There will be one additional page for translation that includes the questions we will be asking idea creators when they submit ideas for the campaign. I will notify you when that prose is ready.

Finally, thank you for your support; it's very important to me that these campaigns are accessible to folks across non-English Wikimedia projects, and I wouldn't be able to do that without your time and effort. In appreciation, I'd like to send you a postcard from Chicago where I reside. If you'd like to receive a postcard from me, please e-mail me with an address I contact you at to my work e-mail, cschilling(_AT_)wikimedia.org. I realize this is private information, so if you would prefer not to receive a postcard, that is understandable. Your work to make our projects accessible to everyone is no less appreciated. Please let me know if you have any questions about the prose regarding translation. Thanks, I JethroBT (WMF) 20:33, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

Marking for translation, to Basque

Hi Kaganer, the Basque Wikimedians are progressing with our education and translation program. Still there is a small number of issues to be addressed, some of which I have cited before, as follows:

1. This slide has been published, that is clear like in all Wikipedia Essentials and Basics modules, but not in most of the rest Editing section modules. Is this a consequence of the bug cited in Phabricator? Please bear in mind that most of the modules cannot be updated or refreshed.

2. The last slides of Editing Basics have not been published either (it reads "91%").

3. We would need to translate the home page of Training in the Dashboard, as well as the next page. Still I cannot find where the source English language are located. Then we would need to have it marked.

Your help is greatly appreciated! --Iñaki LL (talk) 11:41, 24 January 2018 (UTC)

@Iñaki LL:
1) I am don' see or don't understand your problem. Please explain more clearly.
2) Last slides of Editing Basics was succwssfully published in Dashboard - i seen Basque translation.
3) This is should be question to dashboard's managers. Maybe in Phabricator.
--Kaganer (talk) 13:24, 24 January 2018 (UTC)
@Kaganer: 1. Please compare these two: this, from Editing essentials 103xx, and this, from Evaluating articles 109xx. The former is totally integrated in the interface, the latter still gives you the opportunity to translate..., well it is translated by now!
2. I thought the whole module was functional, until I saw this and this, see items 22 and 23, inactive (I am logged in).
3. Yes, it is made up of two questions really: Where is the source? Can you mark it for translation? I will try my hand in Phabricator then. Thank you --Iñaki LL (talk) 14:38, 24 January 2018 (UTC)
@Iñaki LL:
1) First translated, second is untranslated. What your problem? Just translate second slide. (PS: for local pages please use internal links - see this my reply);
2) Items 22 and 23 is active for me (but i am seen these as inactive in past visite). This is may be for completed steps when the module is not fully completed.
3) I'm found these texts in the next pages: Training modules/editing-medical-topics, Training_modules/evaluating-articles, Training modules/editing-basics, Training modules/wikipedia-essentials (/de, /eu), Training modules/evaluating-articles, Training_modules/sandboxes, Training modules/sources, Training modules/plagiarism, Training modules/images-and-media, Training modules/translating-articles. But i'm don't sure that these pages will be automatically transferred to dashboard. Maybe these should be renamed fo subpages of "Training modules/dashboard/..." (and maybe needs some other actions). By way, text for library page i'm founded only in User:Ragesoss/dashboard libraries/editing-wikipedia.json. Please contact with Ragesoss or write question in Phabricator. If these texts would be included into set of automatically sinchronized items, i'm mark these for translations.
--Kaganer (talk) 15:46, 24 January 2018 (UTC)
1) O my... That happens to be one of the only couple of modules I have not translated myself, so the other translator has not done his job yet, Ok... Compare this (first example) with this, translated but not showing a fully integrated interface, with the latter failing to show a Basque language option in the menu. This is the case in most or all the modules you enumerate above.
2) I confirm 22 and 23 as inactive for me once inside the Dashboard, but they appear normally if we check the corresponding slides page in Editing basics module, here and here. Will contact with Rageoss, thanks. --Iñaki LL (talk) 16:29, 24 January 2018 (UTC)
3) The links you provide above (Training modules/editing-medical-topics, etc.) do not match this, they are slightly different. The latter link is partially covered by the Ragesoss' page you pointed, part of it. --Iñaki LL (talk) 16:29, 24 January 2018 (UTC)
@Iñaki LL:
1) Yes! I'm understod! The new language in the panel will appear after you begin the translation. Just press link "Itzuli orri hau" (if your user interface in Euskara) above language bar and start your translation. If your user interface in English or third language, you need select "Euscara" in top right corner.
2) Inactivity in Dashboard isn't relevancy with translations issue. Try relogin in dashboard; and also try click on slide 21, select third ansver and then press "Hurrengo orria".
3) Ok, probably these obsolete pages should be deleted, or renamed and updated. Dear @Ragesoss:, please give us true solution!
--Kaganer (talk) 22:49, 24 January 2018 (UTC)
1) Thanks but that is obvious at this point, what I mean is that most of the modules have been translated, still cannot see the Basque language heading "Euskara" (or "Basque", depending on interface language) in the menu bar, except for the modules Editing basics and Editing essentials, and a couple of loose slides, just test it! Why are not the rest of slides with translation completed fully functional? That is my question...
2) While I am logged in, the inactivity of those two items persists, but when I log out they are active.
3) Yes, a helping hand is very much welcome!:) --Iñaki LL (talk) 08:58, 25 January 2018 (UTC)
@Iñaki LL: Language bar is just wiki-tag <language/>. This was added manually by me in first two sections, and don't added by other users, what a mark for translations. If language bar is exist and translation of this slide into some language was started, that language name will be displayed. If translation was not started - just start it. If you seen "red links" in your subpage what was created by me - just click it and press «Itzuli» tab link, placed at left from "star" icon.--Kaganer (talk) 12:34, 25 January 2018 (UTC)
As example, translation for slide Training modules/dashboard/slides/10908-why-cite was not started by nobody (page Training modules/dashboard/slides/10908-why-cite/eu is not exist). But if you press small link "Itzuli orri hau" above language bar in source slide and if you translate any item, that "/eu" subpage will be created and name of your language will be appears in the language bar. --Kaganer (talk) 12:44, 25 January 2018 (UTC)
So how should I add the language menu at the top, not in English, but in the Basque language slide, so that they look the same? (There is no Edit tab in the Basque slide, there is "Itzuli" instead = Translate, but I do not need it, since it has been translated by now) Thank you --Iñaki LL (talk) 16:14, 26 January 2018 (UTC)
@Iñaki LL: Fixed. --Kaganer (talk) 16:37, 26 January 2018 (UTC)
I saw the English slide gives me the opportunity to add the language menu myself as explained above, but not in Basque. If I could do it myself I would add the language menu in the Basque slides. --Iñaki LL (talk) 22:03, 26 January 2018 (UTC)
@Iñaki LL: You may added language bar in the source (english) slides. Then someone from translation administrators should be marking these slide for translation. After this language bar will be appear in the subpages with translations. --Kaganer (talk) 00:02, 27 January 2018 (UTC)
So I should understand some administrator will notice that I have added the menu bar in English and they will add it in turn in the translated Basque language slides, right? Good! That is a small step forward. --Iñaki LL (talk) 09:58, 27 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi Kaganer, I found there are some loose segments that despite having been translated remain in English in the Basque language slide. This seems to be due to not having been marked for translation, like "Click to expand/collapse" as explained and pinpointed in this conversation. Could you mark them for translation? Thank you --Iñaki LL (talk) 15:33, 29 January 2018 (UTC)

@Iñaki LL: Please give me more exact link. In common way, if you tranlate some items, these translation should be immediately visible in the "/eu" subpage. --Kaganer (talk) 17:55, 29 January 2018 (UTC)
First of all, I should mention the "Test yourself!" message, check out this: I have seen showing untranslated (link below), although you seem to have mark it for translation. Secondly, look at this (click to collapse/expand, "Discuss this question"). Could that be worked out? --Iñaki LL (talk) 15:06, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
Yes, I was updated of template, but not slide. Three new items is added, please check again. --Kaganer (talk) 15:37, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
Clicking on the link above ("look at this") it has not refreshed yet... --Iñaki LL (talk) 09:50, 31 January 2018 (UTC)
...Becouse translation for new items does was not be made. Please check untranslated items in the translation interface. --Kaganer (talk) 14:52, 31 January 2018 (UTC)
You are actually right, my oversight! (Always on the same three segments) Now fixed. Thank you --Iñaki LL (talk) 12:15, 1 February 2018 (UTC)

Помощь с Central Notice

--Alexander (talk) 05:46, 2 February 2018 (UTC)

Translatewiki not refreshing?

Zdravstvuite Kaganer! Hope you are doing well. I come for this issue related to the "Paragrafoa" dropdown menu in Visual Editor (example from article Donostia). I corrected its terminology in Translatewiki (searched for word Azpiatalburua). However, the dropdown menu is still not corrected after one day. Is this an issue or do we still need to wait more until it refreshes? Best regards --Iñaki LL (talk) 11:02, 8 March 2018 (UTC)

@Iñaki LL: One-two week, approximately. --Kaganer (talk) 15:52, 9 March 2018 (UTC)

Help request for synonym labeling

@Kaganer: We are building a model to be able to do article section alignment across Wikipedia languages. I'm wondering if you can help us with a labeling task that will define the ground truth for a synonym detection algorithm. (Please be aware that clicking on the next two links will take you to a Google spreadsheet) The task and the instructions. I'd appreciate if you let me know if this is something you can help us with. Thanks either way! :) --LZia (WMF) (talk) 19:50, 2 April 2018 (UTC)

Of cource. I'm will be filling it. Please note, that current instruction is irrelevant to the table - "same / overlap / different" values in instruction versus the "not related / synonim / related" options in the real worksheet. --Kaganer (talk) 22:56, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
@LZia (WMF): - Done. Sheet "ru-r1" is filled. --Kaganer (talk) 00:06, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
@Kaganer: Thank you very much. If I may ask, would your responses change if instead of these three labels you had in the sheet, you would have "same", "different", "overlap" labels available to you. Thanks! --LZia (WMF) (talk) 00:13, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
@LZia (WMF): I do not think that something will changed. But "related" is more broad term then "overlap". --Kaganer (talk) 01:20, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
@Kaganer: got it. thanks for confirming. We will fix the labels for future data collections. --LZia (WMF) (talk) 20:23, 3 April 2018 (UTC)

ДЕРЕВЕНСКИЙ НАСОС

Не поможете узнать, кто автор деревенского насоса в опросе, который был проспамлен по СО в рувики дня три назад? Вот в этом. MBH (talk) 11:47, 4 April 2018 (UTC)

  • @MBH: Я уже второй день смотрю и плачу. Рыдаю практически. См. мой запрос Talk:Community_Insights/Translation#How_to_update_translations_in_the_Qualtrics_website?. --Kaganer (talk) 11:59, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
    • Разобрались в техническом чате. Сообщения, не переведённые здесь, похоже, переводятся гуглотранслейтом. MBH (talk) 12:01, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
      • @MBH: - если так, то вот это пять. Нет, все десять. Вот как так можно? (риторический вопрос). Чувствую себя министром Лавровым. --Kaganer (talk) 12:16, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
        • Ну а как ещё, оставлять на английском? Гуглотранслейт гораздо лучше, отличная идея. MBH (talk) 12:17, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
--Kaganer (talk) 12:28, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
            • Не, это всё понятно, но это не ответ на вопрос. Что делать, если час Ч наступил, а часть сообщений не переведена? Гуглотранслейт - ответ лучше, чем английский; других вариантов и вовсе нет. MBH (talk) 12:29, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
              • @MBH: Можно было сделать хоть что-то, чтобы этого не случилось - "другие же могут?" Не было сделано НИЧЕГО. Но я думаю, что предположение об автоматической подстановке гуглопереводов ошибочно. Сейчас Гугл переводит отдельные вопросы не так, как это отображается на сайте. Я думаю, что переводы были сделаны кем-то ещё год назад, но поскольку опрос не был расширен на русскоязычную аудиторию, их никто не заметил. --Kaganer (talk) 12:32, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
                • Я не нашёл текста "деревенский насос" полным поиском ни по транслейтвики, ни по мете. MBH (talk) 12:38, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
                  • @MBH: Я не нашёл ни одной из развернутых фраз - ни вопросов, ни ответов. Из этого следует, что эти переводы (были) сделаны вне вики, но и только. --Kaganer (talk) 12:50, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
                  • @MBH: Ну, я был прав. Почитайте по моей ссылке ответ ответственного. Он написал в рассылку, никто не откликнулся, он подождал до дедлайна, а потом заказал перевод кому-то на стороне. Не, ну а чо? Нормалёк.--Kaganer (talk) 16:04, 4 April 2018 (UTC)

Hi Kaganer!

You had signed up as a translator for the Community Insights Survey at Community Insights/Translation. Could I trouble you for one last thing this year? WMF Board members (chart)

Hello, your recent update to “WMF Board members” page inspired me to put the Board member chart into ja. Could you please have a look at the above link, or the ja translations are not shown in correct script, but all squares. Do I need to post the bug elsewhere? Doubt other non-Latin script would show correctly. Cheers,--Omotecho (talk) 13:59, 9 May 2018 (UTC) Omotecho (talk) 13:59, 9 May 2018 (UTC)

@Omotecho: See mw:Extension:EasyTimeline#Unicode - default font for diagrams should be changed through $wgTimelineFontFile. But i don't know, if there's a proper font. --Kaganer (talk) 21:26, 9 May 2018 (UTC)

Thank you adding the case to phab:T115188, and I guess the issue is not with translation at all. I wish there be not much of those similar to Template:BoardChart, but anyway, appreciate you guided me to see the big picture. It is not quite case-closed, but will keep an eye on the ticket... Cheers, forgot to leave signature --Omotecho (talk) 15:13, 10 May 2018 (UTC)
@Omotecho: User:Amire80 wrote me, that EasyTimeline extension is obsoleted, and tag "Timeline" should be replaced to "graph" as possible. See mw:Extension:Graph. I am planned learn this in the near future. --Kaganer (talk) 15:40, 10 May 2018 (UTC)
OK, great progress! I will try and translate mw:Extension:Graph before long. Thank you again, what a good day today. --Omotecho (talk) 16:13, 10 May 2018 (UTC)

Begging a favour

Would you be so kind to set up Template:Emergency-bot-shutoff so we can have it translatable. Thanks if you could. Not done templates before, and I am usually more of an updater than a starter.  — billinghurst sDrewth 09:53, 23 May 2018 (UTC)

Well. This is should be in "autotranslation mode", as i understood. --Kaganer (talk) 11:09, 23 May 2018 (UTC)
@Billinghurst: Done, see Template:Emergency-bot-shutoff/i18n. --Kaganer (talk) 12:22, 23 May 2018 (UTC)
What are your thoughts about User:CommonsDelinker being put into translate mode? Unusual for a user: ns page, though one I think that we should consider.  — billinghurst sDrewth 12:32, 23 May 2018 (UTC)
Presuming that translated global pages work through the magic? Maybe they won't pick up language variables.  — billinghurst sDrewth 12:35, 23 May 2018 (UTC)
@Billinghurst: In my own Meta-wiki userpage is used language swith based on {{int:lang}}. If you look at this page from pt.wikipedia.org with "?uselang=ru" and with "?uselang=en", you can see the differences. These same you may see in the new Ingush Wikipedia for inh:User:CommonsDelinker - with the "uselang=ru" you may see russian translation of Emergency-bot-shutoff section! --Kaganer (talk) 13:13, 23 May 2018 (UTC)
Excellent news. Then I think that we can have a successful migration, and this will enable me to push xwiki for the removal of all the translated user pages.  — billinghurst sDrewth 13:16, 23 May 2018 (UTC)
Would you see this as something that we would set up as subpages and let the languages do their own set of text (or which we can just copy and paste it); or something using the translate tools.  — billinghurst sDrewth 13:28, 23 May 2018 (UTC)
See w:d:Benutzer:CommonsDelinker - this is unlikely to be replaced by a global page, even if this one will be translated. In this local page is used custom project-specific header, and also this page is linked with other bot pages through navbox. This is only single example. So there's no point in taking care of moving local pages. It will only be possible to remove the soft redirects and half-empty pages where they were created. --Kaganer (talk) 15:15, 23 May 2018 (UTC)

New community space for IdeaLab on Connect

Hi folks. If you're receiving this message, you've contributed to IdeaLab or an Inspire Campaign this year. Thanks for participating to develop ideas and review ones from other Wikimedians.

We are preparing some changes to IdeaLab and Inspire Campaigns. One of these changes is a new community space on Connect, where Wikimedians can find each other based on common activities or skills, and ask questions about the space. You are invited to join this community space for IdeaLab, especially if you would ever consider needing to find contributors with certain skills (like design or project management) or would like to offer your skills to others in our movement. To join, please proceed to Connect/IdeaLab and click on the "Add yourself" button on the right. Thanks, I JethroBT (WMF) 19:53, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

(Opt-out instructions)

Do you have an idea about how to measure the health of your community? Do you want to review ideas that others have submitted? Through August 10th, we are inviting ideas on how to capture the well-being of Wikimedia communities, in terms of matters like conflict resolution, effective content creation, and being able to contribute in a collaborative environment. Ideas can be focused on either quantitative techniques, such as gathering raw data, or qualitative techniques, like surveying contributors. If you are submitting an idea, guidance is available for how to move your idea into implementation, such as through a grant or starting a Phabricator task to engage with developers.

If you're interested, consider joining the Inspire Campaign. I JethroBT (WMF) 17:13, 13 July 2018 (UTC)

SVG Translate Community wishlist survey project

Hello! Thank you for voting for the SVG Translate project that was proposed in the 2017 Wishlist survey. The Community Tech team in the Wikimedia Foundation is beginning to start their work on the project. We're currently looking for feedback on some open questions which will allow us to come up with preliminary designs for the tool. If you are interested in being involved, you can watch the project page and join in the discussions on the talk page. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and learning from your experiences. Thank you. -- NKohli (WMF), Product Manager, Community Tech (talk) 21:53, 16 August 2018 (UTC)

The Community Wishlist Survey

Hi,

You get this message because you’ve previously participated in the Community Wishlist Survey. I just wanted to let you know that this year’s survey is now open for proposals. You can suggest technical changes until 11 November: Community Wishlist Survey 2019.

You can vote from November 16 to November 30. To keep the number of messages at a reasonable level, I won’t send out a separate reminder to you about that. /Johan (WMF) 11:24, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

Central notice adminship

Hi! For security reasons, the Foundation decided to remove the rights related to Central Notice adminship from regular Meta admins, so that only the special group "central notice administrators" still has them. Since you made CN-related actions in the last 12 months, WMF requested us Meta bureaucrats to add you to do this group, in order not to disturb your workflow. The announcement can be found here. Best regards --MF-W 10:43, 17 November 2018 (UTC)

@MF-Warburg: Thanks, this will be useful ;) I am not very good at this functionality, but I promise to study this more carefully. --Kaganer (talk) 16:32, 17 November 2018 (UTC)

Main Page translations

Hello, Kaganer,

The work you do is tremendous, and I salute thee.

I would like to ask you about the translation/definition Translations:_Main Page/15/hr and the context You defined.

I believe that this translation/definition is in connection with the 133th line of the Template: Other languages/Template:Main Page, namely, that translation is in my opinion trying to circumvent the usage of that template.

The 133th line is:
{{LangAutoSwitch|e=span|lang={{{lang|en}}}

It forces the text '''Old style:''' into translated old style main pages, in those cases where translation doesn't exist.

The 133th line is in connection with Template: En.

On some pages the 133th line works fine, like: Glavna strana, Faqja kryesore. On other pages it doesn't seem to work: Special: WhatLinksHere/Template:MetaHomePages, for instance Acuèlh, Hafan.

This is why I think the translation (Translations: Main Page/15/hr, and the rest of them) should be like in Template: En, because I seems to me that programers envisioned that part of the problem: to show both old style and new style main pages, some of them marked with (en).

It is possible that the programmers meant to use it for marking parts of translatable pages as not (yet) translated, and also use it when there is no available translation in Template: En.

Second question: Hovedside or Forside? In Translations: Main Page/Page display title/nb. I looked at no.wiki and at translatewiki: MediaWiki:Mainpage/nb.

Hope this helps you. Thanks in advance for all your help. Truly yours. -- Nesmir Kudilovič (razgovor) 19:47, 16. prosinca 2018. (SEV)

@Nesmir Kudilovic:
(1) You are mistaked. "T:15" is connected with Template:Main Page/WM News only. This is temporary option for displaying news in the relevant language (if translations is exists). Maybe this will be deleted and replaced into another code. --Kaganer (talk) 02:21, 17 December 2018 (UTC)
(2) This is no my own desigion. See Hovedside page history (historically used for "nb") vs. Forside page history (historically used for "da"). In my opinion, this is good way, so that the names for different languages are different. Otherwise, needs to create disambiguation page.--Kaganer (talk) 02:21, 17 December 2018 (UTC)
PS: About translation in TWN - see history: translation of Mainpage/nb (and relevant messages) was replaced to "Forside" in 2013 (after 7 years) withot any reason and without discussion. This is may bу freely reverted by these same way. --Kaganer (talk) 02:28, 17 December 2018 (UTC)
