Hello. We'll host a new SheSaid in October 2021 ! I hope you are still keen to participate this year !

There is something new this year. Several women will host events in their countries to present Wikiquote and host edit-a-thon as part of SheSaid (and more generally to reflect on the gender gap of course). You may already know some of them, whilst others are new comers and will benefit from your warm and friendly collective support.
Some submitted some rapid grant requests and if you think their proposals are good and you want to support the development of wiki activities in their countries, please drop by the grant request and add your support; This would be much appreciated. The list :

Permission to add results from BCL and TL Wikiquote

Hi Anthere, this is just to ask permission if we can also add from the list the primary results of the edits we had on both BCL and TL Wikiquote which are currently on incubator. We will be manually counting the created articles since the #SheSaidPH2021 we used on hashtag tracker generate no results. News from the hashtag tool

Some of you know that the hashtag tool has stopped working at some point and this is making our lives a bit more complicated for tracking.

I reported the issue on Phabricator and got some news !

Sorry for the delay in looking into this - the tool isn't officially maintained and I missed this. It looks like the last data we have is September 30th.
I'm trying to fix this today; the problem appears to be an SSL error in the collection script container - it can't connect to the eventstream. Suspect this has to do with us using an old VM so I'm going to aim to hit two birds with one stone and upgrade production to Debian Stretch.
Once this gets up and running again we'll be able to collect historical data from up to 30 days ago, but unfortunately will have lost anything between then and September 30th.

Results 2021 !

Hello friends !

The SheSaid drive is over ! All results may be found here.

For 2021, nine different language communities contributed – Italian, Ukrainian, English, Tagalog, Igbo, Spanish, French, Central Bikol, and Catalan. In addition to the global drive, 12 members of Wiki Loves Women’s Focus Group held local training and participation drives with their communities.

Across the 9 language Wikiquotes a collective of 1,514 articles were created. This ensures that 1,514 notable women whose voices and wisdom had previously not been featured, can now be easily accessed. Articles for a further 309 women were improved. In addition, 638 articles featuring notable women were created on Kinyarwanda Wikipedia (Wikipediya mu Kinyarwanda) by the activities of the Wiki Loves Women Focus Group member in Rwanda in collaboration with Wikimedia Rwanda Usergroup.

The Italian language community through the enthusiasm of the Wiki Donne user group was again the most outstanding contributor to the SheSaid Campaign. This community created articles about 609 women and improved a further 227 articles. The next prolific contender, the Tagalog language community (currently in incubator status) created 308 new articles. The third highest contributing language community was to the EnglishUkrainian language Wikiquote by creating 169 articles and improving a further 55 articles.

Below are the stats impact for the SheSaid Campaign across 9 different languages that participated in 2021;

The lack of women’s voices in the digital domain is a global issue, one that we can collective work on in order to change how women are viewed. Wiki Loves Women is awed by the response and enthusiasm to the second edition of this drive, and looks forward to the third version in 2022! We urge that anyone can join this initiative and continue to make an impact by adding more articles about women !

We plan to organise an office hour dedicated to the @SheSaid campaign in July.

I am really interested but faced misuse of access. Some small wikis suffers a lot. I have been blocked indefinite in Persian Wikiquote based on Persian Wikipedia's gossips, and I have issues in Arabic Wikiquote too, just been blocked for a week; Because lack of the local policies like Image use policy, Quotability, etc... and a pro-blocking admin there, made me semi-retired. Bytheway, I Improved many entires of women in both Arabic and Persian Wikiqoutes, out of time, like: Farzaneh Ta'idi, Shirin Ebadi, Farzaneh Kabuli, Googoosh, Leila Forouhar, Tahmineh Milani, Fatemeh Mo'tamed-Araia, Niki Karimi - Ibtihal al-Khatib, Nadin Labaki, Rahma Riad, Arab women and Women. They really said cool things.
But the access-holders are not chosen for their logical reasoning and familiarity with universal principles, "community consensus" is always matter, even if a clear violation occurs. @Anthere Of course, having it on Wikipedia and Wikiquote, even if not for all the two month (let's say 2 weeks at the beginning), would be great. Hi, I hope I will be attending on jawp and maybe on wikidata. Question Question: One small ripple. Have many-one encouraged your community to add hashtag on article-talkpage for SheSaid? I am keen to know if before/after hashtag, you find more articles added locally? My hunch is that ear-marking those contribute/support SheSaid is a convenient way to those people among jawp editors/readers who are not quite happy about adding not-popular female somebody. Very sorry, but I sense supporting equality/lowering gender gap on jawp has lowered its voltage, and wonder how it will attract more editors/readers on the subject. @Omotecho Same for me. It's not just about the Women, not about Patriarchy vs Feminism, It's about being Liberal and Modernist. Liberalism and Humanism is not widely accepted in Persian and Arab wp and wk. I faced troubles there, a multi-identital-cultural-racial user have no choice but to contribute only in English projects. Content duplication

Dear Islahaddow,

You have reverted my edit without any explanation. I probably should have asked before doing this massive change, I chose to be bold instead.

  • Shouldn’t we have the header menu in the main page?
  • Is this expected to have the same content duplicated through pages? If so, cannot we use transclusion instead of repeating the same content, to facilitate maintenance and translation?

Hi @Islahaddow, I learned in the TG channel that @Jeremyb would be designing the banner and the campaign. I do not really have the bandwith to coordinate global banners atm, also because there is a bug that requires a CN admin (or the steward) to be around al through the campaign to check for and push to live all the translations that come in. This means a lot of extra work.... :(
In general on the banner request, I would say: please limit the number of countries you want to target to the number of countries actually participating in the campaign. As you can see in the calendar, October is a busy month for CN campaigns. Ciell (talk) 10:08, 30 September 2022 (UTC)
@Islahaddow can I propose to create a derivative of File:Wikiloveswomen logo piece only.png with instead of the Women in the center, a small speaking cloud or something similair? The CN banner request still needs:

Comment: gorgeous. Generally, I do like white-text-on-color background, but there can sometimes be issues with display, printing, accessibility, or readability. I don't think that's true here, but some typographic designers prefer to avoid that for those reasons. @Afek91Lovely graphic design. However, it is far easier to read text when it is not printed in all caps. (A general constant in graphic design.) Try it and see the difference. Also, if the background was a bit darker, that would help readers with some forms of low vision. (See Wikipedia for "Low vision".) Putting Elliot Page on a banner about women quotes and misgendering him twice seems rather awkward, to say the least.

Proposition of Webinars

Hello...

So... I am going to see with @Natacha LSP when I could do a small training session in French in partnership with LSP...

Does anyone feel like hosting a webinar + Q&A in English ? Perhaps amongst those who participated last year ? I can help and I can join of course. I am super packed this week, but I am at home this week-end (perhaps a Saturday morning for Europeans-Africans (around 10 UTC+2 ?) or super late on Friday for others (around 11 UTC+2 ?). Thoughts ?

Next week will be complicated for I as well because I will be travelling with Wikimedia France to help on a giant edit-a-thon. I will do SheSaid stuff, but it would be very complicated for me to host or join a webinar (not sure when I will be free, not sure about the internet connexion...) But the potential problem is that it is 30 mn long. VERY long. Does anyone feel like doing a shorter version this year (in English or any other language ?)

NPOV violation in the landing page

Phrase "Aside from the alpha male displayed on home page, check out the people list and look for women..." may be seen acceptable in English (I don't know), but in literal translation into Russian (as example) this become radically non-neutral. Third... I must say that my understanding of « Alpha » male is such that this mention of « Alpha » is not appropriate to the main page. According to Wikipedia, it means in groups of animals is the most dominant male of its social group. The Alpha male is to be opposed to the beta males, the first being the dominant over the other males. This is quite unrelated to what we are currently doing... I am fairly sure that amongst all the men having entries in Wikiquote, some are alpha and some beta... and so what ? Plus, it is rather slang vocabulary... not super professional. But in any cases... this is unrelated to what we are doing.
What we are trying to do is to give more visibility to our most notable women.
So I’d say that the above sentence is not appropriate. It should be rephrased. But again, I do not read Russian... so can only rely on you to do the best thing :) Usually... relying on facts is a pretty cool thing to do. Anthere (talk) 11:17, 17 October 2022 (UTC)

  • @Anthere: It is not about alpha, it is about male. Russian language has no direct, concise and neutral equivalents for English male and female. The equivalents for male animal and female animal (самец and самка, the former used in the translation of alpha male) are strictly for animals. Using them to address people is a gross insult. Unless, of course, the person publicly accepts the sexually-loaded language - which, I believe, Trump did not, certainly not in its Russian-language connotation. Great discussion, very inspiring. While jawq does not run a campaign yet, your discussion made me recall: in Japanese language, adding male/female makes the attributed person look beast-like / non-intelligent, or the speaker is insulting. Maybe it's linked with our Buddhist ideology, that your wrong deed in this life, will let you incarnate into lower grade of living form, meaning animal/insects. Off topic: For Alpha, the old schoolers in the society of Japan like the term "boss", and yes, its neutral sexually. Ideas for translating "SheSaid" into languages with no gendered pronouns

Question about this project

Hi everyone. I think this is a wonderful initiative and I definitely intend to spread the word about it on my blog. I just wanted to check and make sure that the goal of the project is to showcase actual women (adult human females, born females, without male genitalia)? I hate to have to clarify, but unfortunately there is already so much intrusion into women’s spaces by men masquerading as women that I feel it’s necessary. Thanks. Hello, this is my first post on this wiki, I saw the #SheSaid campaign on Wikiquote and was wondering if there is a place to discuss postcards and bookmarks? I was going to suggest women involved in early American comic books, specifically: Lauretta Bender, Elizabeth Holloway Marston and Olive Byrne (Rosalind Kirby has no Wikipedia page despite being one of the few women to ink comics at the time). I was also wondering what the consensus was regarding religious figures, whether there would be a sliding scale of acceptability according to historicity.

Translation drive

Hello, wishing you a beautiful October, and I was looking around pages where campaign participants-to-be will read: like Wiki Loves Women/SheSaid, our homepage, is still waiting for you and put it readable in your mother tongue or that of your grandmothers (; Parts relevant to 2023 campaign has been updated, so kindly double check if your previous translation is fresh enough.

I also added tags to the 2023 campaign page, wow, a thank you so much providing a cabinet of treasures. @Ciell, am I too ambitious and have the page pushed for fuzzy, and the language box at the top allow us to translate mid-October? I guess Wikimedians in Japanese language are a bit in a slack due other businesses of their life demand.

While awaiting the fuzzy angels will do the magic and make that page open for translation tasks, congrats to our peers in Nigeria to gear up with rapid fund!

Say, of course, you need to “rest” your bread curd while having it rise, and all starts when you mix and kneard flour with salt and water for your share of nans, mantows and bread.

Holidays. In Japan, it’s the busiest season by the third week in October, for households with little ones: Sports Days and extended family might be tasked to video their little athletes. In Japan, we have a proverb "tamper the iron while it's red hot", and that's true to those who see the any banner propagating on their page, or whatsoever with /ja added at the URL. They will jump on it, if it's in banner/ja, but awful the banner does not show in the local language I am afraid. Then how can we involve them? Through links?
As a practitioner, I've seen ppl complain that banners are post but there is nothing they can contribute since the linked page is in en/fr/non-ja language bla, bla, bla...
It's easy to shrug your shoulders and walk away, and I find it very interesting or a big joke, as women have been treated as such at customers' counters at department stores or municipal offices. well, they say women talk women, a foreigner/alian language, you know (;

Can someone validate my SheSaid Communities edits?

I noticed some inconsistencies and (more than minor) errors on the SheSaid Participating Communities 4th Edition page. I made some changes accordingly.

Next, I left an entry requesting that someone (with internationalization syntax knowledge) double check my edits for accuracy on the talk page. Hello User:Vjsuseela. You have two main options...

  1. either you make sure to manually list them on the project page (in Telegu), one by one.
  2. Or you make sure that the hashtag #shesaid is added at least once in the article edit history (in the comment box). Example here (you only need to add it once in fact).

When the hashtag is added, we can then run a query to have the full list of created and modified. See for example

It is unrelated to meta. I removed it because I simply think it is not true. Let me be more specific here... it is not because a woman is awesome, that she said stuff which is awesome. Quotes to be added are not « any quote », it is not « anything they said and that sounds cool ». All wikiquotes have a rule that a quote needs to be « notable ». Did it had impact ? What is mentioned in the press ? Is that something people remember about ? Only those quotes should normally go into wikiquote. And sorry to say but no... not every notable women SAY something that is notable. Most probably do. But this is not always the case. Anthere (talk) 11:58, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
Non-notable women can also say notable quotes, and vice-versa. I do agree that "notable" does not always mean "good", and vice-versa. By "good women", I mean good, ethical people who know what it means to be human. 1) Do you want only quotes from women who have not yet been added to WikiQuotes? Or will additional quotes for those already there be acceptable?

2) How do I start a new WikiQuote page for someone who is not yet there? Is there a minimum number of quotes I would need?

3) When I sign into the other sister Wikis, my user name ends up in red, not blue. Am I supposed to join each Wiki separately? Or use different user names for each one? I admit to grand confusion.

  1. The #SheSaid campaign consist of creating new articles of women on wikiquote by adding their quotes or improving the existing ones. Both work.
  2. I would like to invite you to visit the recordings of our last webinars in Arabic, French and English, it might be helpful to learn how to edit Wikiquote.

My two cents

I looked through a couple of relevant talk pages and didn't really see anyone sharing this point of view, so I thought I'd go ahead and get it off my chest.

I think campaigns like this are embarrassing and I always roll my eyes whenever I see one.

Equality is a fine thing and it's a fine thing to promote. And I'm sure everyone who came up with this project had nothing but the most lovely intentions. But when you say "to promote equality, please write articles about only women", it does not make you look like you want equality at all. It makes you look incredibly biased.

The suggestion "write more articles about women" comes with the unspoken but necessary corollary "write less articles about people who aren't women".

This should not be the goal. The goal should be that we write articles about everyone, no matter what type of person they are.

Now, if some people want to write articles about only women because that's what interests them, that's fine. There's no issue there.

But every year, year after year, the site gets blasted with these banners telling everyone to write this way, as if it's some inherent good.

Additionally, the talk pages seem to be full of people who believe that there is some conspiracy or bias on Wikipedia against articles about women. Even entertaining an idea like this is silly. Does anyone really think that an editor ever sits down at their desk, writes up a big article about someone, finds all their sources, spellchecks it, and is about to post it when they realize it's about a woman and deletes the whole thing in disgust?

This scenario is ridiculous but hardly moreso than any other proposition that there is a wide-scale bias against women on Wikipedia of all websites.

I would be much happier with a banner that encouraged people to write articles about "underrepresented voices" etc. and let each editor draw their own meaning from that, whether it be women or victims of human trafficking or people who speak dying languages or anyone at all that they are inspired to write about.

This is all just my perspective on the project, but I can only imagine that there are plenty of other people who feel the same way but haven't shared their feelings yet. 2DLove (talk) 21:04, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

You voiced a similar topic in the 2022 campaign around International Women's Day. My 2 cents for you: please feel free to go ahead and create a campaign to address the issue you see, and find other people willing to team up and organize with you. "Underrepresented voices" might be a bit more of a challenge to explain its scope, but you seem like someone who likes a challenge. Because drives like SheSaid are not an either/or situation: while the numbers state clearly the gender gap in articles on the projects, there are numerous knowledge gaps on our projects that can be (should be) addressed. And even if you simply would want to do a "HeSaid" - please go ahead (just make sure you coordinate with the SheSaid organizers on the timing): it's a wiki! Imho the interesting thing about SheSaid is that it focuses on a different project than just "The Big 3", which is what makes it different from the yearly returning writing drives, or the annual big photo upload campaigns. I really hope that the underrepresented voices mentioned here include LGBTQ+ people, because they are often left out.
Many of those, who are LGBTQ+, are women (lesbian women, trans women, non-binary women, intersex women, etc.), and they are often ignored just because they are LGBTQ+, or their LGBTQ+ traits are ignored, and they are misrepresented as straight, cisgender, binary and/or endosex, when in reality many such people are gay, lesbian, transgender, non-binary and/or intersex. I have just started to make efforts for inclusion of LGBTQ+ people (editors, article subjects, Wikiquote candidates, etc.) on the English Wikipedia and Meta, but there has been very little consensus.
I hope I could do something I hope we could do something to create a momentum of creation of articles and entries on all wikis; emphasis on "we". I haven't been able to find people willing to do teamwork for inclusivity, but I hope I can do now.
I'm willing to create proposals for such campaigns on appropriate wikis, and Meta seems most suitable for these activities.

@Ciell: One thing that's really disappointing is that one has to look for "like-minded people" to work with in order to make a project successful, especially when Meta has very few LGBTQ+ editors and contributors.
Being LGBTQ+ is not a choice. LGBTQ+ traits are natural variations, because being LGBTQ+ is not unique to humans; many animals are also born LGBTQ+ (The Queer Zoo on JSTOR).
Projects shouldn't require like-mindedness, rather should require teamwork and resources to do what's ethical and reasonable, because like-mindedness is not absolute, but is ambiguous and has many meanings, whereas ethics and reasoning are absolute.
I had hoped that I wouldn't be told to go to spaces for LGBTQ+ people, as if LGBTQ+ contributors are not welcome here, when they should be welcome everywhere; in other words, all good people should be welcome everywhere, regardless of gender, sex, sexuality, race, ethnicity, profession, religion, age, height, diseases, etc. It is quite deflective and seems like pulling the "topic change card" when the topic can be discussed right here rather than telling people to "go look for like-minded people".

Hi @CrafterNova, it was not meant to offend, but merely sharing my personal experience from working on the Gendergap and LGBTQ+ projects. I am not part of the #SheSaid organizing team, and would not want to let your enthusiasm to organize similar things for LGBTQ+ die out, simply because your ideas might not fully resonate here, and it helps to unite with others that are interested in the same topic to get things done.
The share more of my experience: in the Netherlands we went from a monthly convene at the Women's archive in Amsterdam, to a monthly get together where the LGBTQ+ archive (also in Amsterdam) and the Women's archive host in alternating turns. Both our WikiProjects work in close collaboration because we are aware of the many cross overs they have, but both have their own specific topics and outreach. Hello user:CrafterNova. For what it takes... I would first insist that anyone should feel free to join, which ever gender they recognize themselves to be. If you want to make it your home, please feel free.
Second... I do understand your point about making it larger to include others than strictly speaking women. I can give a bit of explanation of how this happened to be because I proposed that project in the first place and I named it :) So if there is anyone to blame, there you go. So why... well... the #SheSaid initiative is part of the larger Wiki Loves Women program, which... has the name says it... is focused on women (rather than on LGBTQ+ topics). So it kinda made sense to keep the focus on women since the overarching program is about women.
You might then ask... but why did we create Wiki Loves Women initially, rather than Wiki Loves LGBT+ ? This is a fair question. There are two main answers really. First, I fully recognize the importance of LGBTQ+ issues and I am aware that this position us in a certain space, rather than another space. This choice was nevertheless deliberate, back in 2016 (when we launched WLW). We is... people from Wiki in Africa. In most cases, our programmes are focusing on the African continent (this is not the case of #shesaid... where we decided to have fun with people from everywhere). Back in 2016, we launched WLW in Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Ghana, and Cameroun. Well... working on LGBTQ+ topics in those 4 countries... is a VERY different story than working on them in France or the USA. See for example w:en:LGBT rights in Nigeria, or w:en:LGBT rights in Cameroon. Our program, funded by Goethe Institute, started with on the ground activities. The very thought of asking the new partner Goethe Institute to host events in Douala related to LGBTQ+, when, I quote In February 2021, two Cameroonian transgender women spent five months in prison after being arrested on February 8 for wearing women's clothing in a restaurant in the country's largest city, Douala. is... how to say... not an easy path ? In the meanwhile... I remember very well that one of the first topic we dealt with in Cameroon precisely... was violence against women, such as w:en:Breast ironing. Not an easy topic...
The second reason is that beyond the political and legal difficulties of working on LGBTQ+ issues in Africa, I believe it is best that initiatives related to LGBTQ+ issues be carried by people who recognize themselves in that group, AND who understand the issues fine. This is not my case (though I learned a lot from les sans pagEs ! and not the case of Isla. And I believe it is not the case of Afek. So our choice back then was to work on women. That was deliberate. Sorry.
That being said... if you look carefully... you will find from time to time entries about men in SheSaid. Just as you may find entries about transversal topics of interest. We will gladly welcome entries related to LGBTQ+ There is a LOT to do; no reason to shut the door in the face of anyone.
But the project is name « She » ... not They. For a French person (me), #TheySaid would actually encompass absolutely everyone. Which mean... this is Wikiquote.

@Anthere: This may be off-topic, but I want to make it clear that sex and gender are different things.
Male ≠ man
Female ≠ woman
Intersex ≠ non-binary

Being born with a particular sex is not a choice, but sex is still not permanent. Trans men can get surgery to have male sex organs constructed by plastic surgery.[3] Trans women can get surgery to have female sex organs constructed by plastic surgery, can have uterine transplants[4] (risky, but is being improved by ongoing research; the earliest recorded example was Lili Elbe), and then become completely female. Fertility is not necessary for valid people to be accepted; infertile and sterile people are also valid, as long as they are ethical, good people.

Returning to the discussion:
Hence, it should be clear that many LGBTQ+ people are women, such as lesbian women, trans women, non-binary women, intersex women, etc. and all of them deserve to be included and represented in the #SheSaid campaign because of the fact that they are women, not because they are LGBTQ+.
The #SheSaid project can either include
  • only women.
  • or all females, including cis women, pre-operative trans men, post-operative trans women, non-binary females, and agender females (born without any gender).

I think that #SheSaid should include only women.

#SheSaid does have some entries of trans men, for example, Elliot Page. It should be clear that trans men are born men, and trans women are born women, hence Elliot Page is a man, was never a woman, and deserves to be represented in a separate LGBTQ+ project, which could be #TheySaid.
Another highly disappointing thing is that trans women are excluded just because they are male, or were previously male, but were born women, and have always been women. In fact, most LGBTQ+ women are excluded from this project just because they are LGBTQ+.
All other non-women LGBTQ+ people deserve to be represented in LGBTQ+ projects and campaigns.

Ok... Let me state here that... beyond the « word » (she) used in the project name, absolutely no one, I repeat, no one is « excluded ». I know this will not be a perfect, nor even a good answer to you when it comes to address the concerns you raise. But that’s my best answer at *this* point in time. We shall not change the name of the initiative. There may be a #TheySaid initiative in the future, but right now... this is not it. Sorry. Anthere (talk) 21:26, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
@Anthere: "he" means man; "she" means woman; and "they" means non-binary (one or more genders that is/are neither man nor woman) or agender (a permanent lack of gender by birth).
Here, "they" refers to singular they.
Many LGBTQ+ women use "she/they", that is, they use both "she" and "they", and should be included because they still use "she" nonetheless.

If nobody is excluded, then please give show any entries of LGBTQ+ women, including lesbian women (e.g. Tig Notaro), bisexual women (e.g. Stephanie Beatriz), trans women (e.g. Laura Jane Grace), non-binary women (e.g. Riley J. Dennis), and intersex women (e.g. Herculine Barbin).

I never asked to change the name of the #SheSaid initiative. It should remain as it is.
The main root word in the name of the initiative is the "she" pronoun. Hence, all women should be represented under the campaign, including LGBTQ+ women, because the "she" pronoun is used by all women.
The initiative does not have to be perfect. We don't even know what perfection looks like, because it is not possible.
I know that it is not possible to include every individual eligible for representation under such projects. It is especially difficult to include those who do not want to be represented under such projects, but we should at least try to include those who want to be represented under such projects.
