AL2TB?

w:Special:Contributions/Mgillfr. --I-210 07:13, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

I know. --Rschen7754 01:15, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
We'll see. --I-210 04:26, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

Freewayguy

Freewayguy has no control of his behavior at all and contines to create more accounts to evade his block/ban just like AL2TB does this all the time. Expect to have his death threat comments and trolling behavior shut down elsewhere too in cross-wiki sites. And I'm happy that you indefinitely blocked him for incivility and disruptive editing as well because i'm supporting indefinite block on him because he has no peace on all of the editors at all and he exhausted all of our patience as well. --I-210 04:23, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

Suffice it to say that after the latest turn of events, he will not be allowed back on any Wikimedia site for a long time. (Considering that Wikipedia has only been here since 2001, I can't say forever). We are working on measures to control his vandalism; however, one of these is revert, block, ignore. --Rschen7754 08:38, 15 January 2009 (UTC)
The only way to stop Freewayguy from creating any more accounts is to block this IP address range 69.0.0.0/16 with a proper reason Block evasion: Freewayguy, {{anonblock}}. --I-210 22:02, 15 January 2009 (UTC)
The problem with that is that would be blocking 1/128th of the Internet (which doesn't sound like a lot, but in summary it would block way too many innocent people.) --Rschen7754 23:51, 15 January 2009 (UTC)
There is a risk that would hit unintended users and they would not be able to appeal. SBC California must have some nice people for customers and not just this wanker. --I-210 00:42, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
Correct. --Rschen7754 08:12, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi, Rschen. I'm an former sysop on Portuguese Wikinews. So I can't see the abuse filter. I will talk with a sysop to solve the problem. Regards, Érico Wouters msg 18:01, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

8 years on the English Wikipedia

I have posted an essay marking my 8th anniversary on my home project, the English Wikipedia. It can be read here. --Rschen7754 10:28, 14 March 2013 (UTC)

Che Wiki

Hello. Excuse me, that takes away your time. I mean, that seems to have found a compromise solution for problem of the Chechen Wikipedia. I wrote on the page of discussion[1]. It would be interesting to know your opinion and that of the other stewards. Mega programmer (talk) 20:05, 24 March 2013 (UTC)

I'm actually not a steward, but thanks. --Rschen7754 20:19, 24 March 2013 (UTC)

Your comment about Norwegian wikinews

You seem to have considered a problem with things being fresh. I suspect that there is no such problem with the content, and summed my view up there, please, look at it.

The same idea in more words - the project is just inactive, making it possible to revive activity at any time unless there are other issues. Could you please look into it? Is there not enough local contributors who would assist newcomers and do quality checks if newcomers appear? Even a positive answer to that ("yes, there is not enough") (which I feel is in fact negative — "no, there is enough") would likely not qualify for project closure policies-wise.

Cheers. Gryllida 02:07, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

There's nothing going on there: [2] --Rschen7754 02:52, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
Some Wikinews were closed before, after publishing no article within 6 months. Then the policies changed, and inactivity alone isn't a reason for closure. The project is there, half dead, it doesn't hurt anyone and doesn't go against Wikimedia mission. I was thinking that were it publishing copyvio articles with nobody around to check and delete them, it would be a problem, for example, but not just inactivity alone. Am I missing something? Thanks. :-) Gryllida 06:28, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
But for a news project, that's a serious issue, as that means there's a huge gap in the news coverage. --Rschen7754 06:44, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
It doesn't hurt if it lies around somewhere, though, does it? If a clock broke, it's a problem that it shows wrong time, but if it works, we don't throw it away as it has potential for rewinding it — that's how I interpreted policies at least; did I misread something? (Sorry for bothering you much, I'm just trying to bring an example; I'm not intending to keep arguing much longer if we disagree. :) Gryllida 10:53, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
I don't think writing news stories retroactively is a good idea. --Rschen7754 17:35, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
Ah well — this wiki medium isn't interactive enough when it comes to folks who just have a different view; it's hard to figure out when this happens, and is rather easy to keep talking uselessly. Let's agree on that, then; thanks for your comments. Gryllida 22:48, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

FWIW there is some activity there now, please take a look at the Discussion section of the closure proposal. Would there be a point at which the proposal is invalidated due to new recent activity? Or is there no such formal process? Thanks. Gryllida 12:26, 20 April 2013 (UTC)

List of reports

Dear Rschen7754, I've created this report (albeit probably incomplete) and listed it on this page. I hope that's okay. Kind regards, Mathonius (talk) 01:02, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

Removal of my sysop rights

Dear Rschen7754! Quentinv57removed my sysop rights today per this meta request, but he has not researched well. Because, Gomada is an extremist Kurdish nationalist. He is also not a Zaza. He made an artificial group against me and provoked me each time to remove me from diq.wikipedia. The vote also went unexpectedly awkward to me. I'm one of the first founders of that project. What Gomada concrete has been done there? Nothing, because he does'nt speak Zazaki. I don't have the time as Gomada, to stir up unrest there and here. His arguments against me have been ripped from the concept and worn together. Please check the situation once again thoroughly. Furthermore, it can't be that alone only User:Quentinv57 can decide. Or? I want my rights back immediately. Best regards! -- Mirzali (talk) 16:33, 28 May 2013 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but I can't do anything about this. --Rschen7754 18:05, 28 May 2013 (UTC)
Dear Rschen7754, thanks for reply! Quentinv57 have to check the situation once again thoroughly. It is a fatal decision. It's not about my personality, but it's more about the Zazaki language. They call our people as KIRD and our language now as KIRDKÎ, which actually mean Kurd and Kurdish. The Kurds now have the upper hand there. They change everything by the Kurdish grammar rules and use Kurdish words. I had only done my duty if I every time warned and blocked them in consequence, for only a short time. I want my rights back immediately. Where can I therefore turn aside? Where can I get help for that? Best regards! --Mirzali (talk) 12:35, 29 May 2013 (UTC)
Again, your only appeal is with the stewards (which I am not). --Rschen7754 18:11, 29 May 2013 (UTC)

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades... (our budget is smaller than Commons)

Rschen7754, congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Meta. Please take a moment to read the Meta:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat, and Meta:Requests for deletion, but also Talk:Spam blacklist and Talk:Interwiki map), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings, or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

A tip: add this page Meta:Administrators' discussion index to your watchlist, it tracks the latest activity to various sections of many of the important pages.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-admin @ irc.freenode.net. You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading although it doesn't always completely apply here at Meta.

Please also check or add your entry to Meta:Administrators#List of administrators and the Template:List of administrators.

Well no, but the unblock message was trolling so I went ahead and deleted it. --Rschen7754 02:46, 19 June 2013 (UTC)

Deleted the Main Page (in Armenian)

Is this worth a trout? You deleted the Main Page in Armenian instead of reverting to the last good version. Was that intended?! PiRSquared17 (talk) 12:38, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

Okay, I restored it. You're lucky nobody else trouted you. ;) Did you know that this page is what you get when you go to https://meta.wikimedia.org/?uselang=hy ? "People interested" and languages

Excuse me, I have some problems and I have already posted the message below in http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meta:Requests_for_help_from_a_sysop_or_bureaucrat

Can you help me?

Thank you very much!

One of my friend and I proposed a wiki, "Wikikulture" (this is the English version and this is the Italian version), but I don't succeed to make show the button "Add a signature" in the section "People interested" (a section for the supporters).

Furthermore I don't succeed to make show this section ("People interested" aka "Persone interessate") in the Italian version of this proposal.

Finally I don't succeed to make show the various language version (now only two, English and Italian) in the upper part of the screen both in the English version and in the Italian one.

Thank you in advance for the help!

Try posting on Meta:Babel? --Rschen7754 03:04, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
I'll post, for the third point, in that "virtual place" of which you wrote, but I think the first and the second point (above all the first) concern sysops or bureaucrats.
1) I don't succeed to make show the button "Add a signature" in the section "People interested" (a section for the supporters).
2) Furthermore I don't succeed to make show this section ("People interested" aka "Persone interessate") in the Italian version of this proposal.
Thank you,

I think you missed the point; if you're trying to not draw attention to the fact that these editors may or may not have a behavioral disorder, posting that comment to a public noticeboard was not the way to bring that about. --Rschen7754 23:09, 4 August 2013 (UTC)

My apologize

Dear Rschen7754, I am Gabriel Lee, 13 years old from Hong Kong, I believe that everyone also have been a novice when they edit wikimedia projects, I have already learnt from what I have done before and I feel very sorry for what I have done and I hope that all of the administrators may forgive me, also you. Also, for my another account chihonglee, I have already stoped to use it. I promise that I will not request for any rights without support forever and I hope that you will support my work. Thank you for what you have done for me. Thank you.(p.s. please leave your respond in beta.wikiversity or zh.wikipedia, thank you)--Gabrielchihonglee (talk) 08:11, 15 September 2013 (UTC)

By the way, I would like to join the "SWMT", can you tell me how to join it?--Gabrielchihonglee (talk) 08:22, 15 September 2013 (UTC)
@Gabrielchihonglee: Well, it does not look good when the people who support you who only have 1 edit on the wiki where you are requesting rights - it makes it look like they were canvassed to support you. But regardless, I hope that you take things slowly on beta.wikiversity, and show people that you can be trusted with the admin flag that you have; if you do that, people may be willing to trust you more in the future. I personally started editing from a young age (though not as young as you are), but I waited until someone offered to nominate me for adminship on the English Wikipedia; that's why I didn't have this problem.
Well, you have to use IRC and join the #cvn-sw channel to participate in SWMT. See IRC/Channels for details. --Rschen7754 09:56, 17 September 2013 (UTC)

Privacy

In this section you can see wmf:Privacy policy broken by user MaGa (talk), revealing a clear name of Kolega2357 (talk). MaGa is Admin in hr:wikipedia. As it is a no go in German Wikipedia he´d most probably loose admins flag for this action. --Giftzwerg 88 (talk) 11:22, 20 September 2013 (UTC)

User:Nathanbennett

I see that you deleted User:Nathanbennett as being out of project scope. A much shorter the page has now been created under the same title, but still, it seems to me, out of scope. You may wish to delete that one too. (I have blocked the user from English Wikipedia, as his edits were a combination of vandalism and use of userspace for purposes unrelated to contributing to the encyclopaedia, and his editing here is very similar to some of his editing there.) Wheel warring on hr.wiki

Thank you for bringing Vituzzu's comment to my attention. I've considered publicizing it on hr.wiki, but have decided against doing so personally at the moment. Vituzzu's comment was directly addressed to Kubura, and in the present prevailing culture of hr.wiki I'm reluctant either to pass on an as-yet-unconfirmed piece of info (that everyone may soon be de-sysoped), or appear as a messenger conveying official-sounding decisions (that wheel wars won't be tolerated).

Thank you too for your involvement in this matter. A few of us are trying to keep a degree of rational detachment but it's not easy to do so while participating in the events at hr.wiki, so reasoned input from the side is very welcome. Miranche (talk) 03:14, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

Thanks to everyone who supported. Following my failed CU nomination on enwiki that turned unnecessarily hostile, I was dreading running for anything ever again. I did get a few opposes of the same nature as those on enwiki, but I am more than grateful for the level of support that I received here. Almost a year ago was the first time I ever was a "global" editor, and while the last year hasn't exactly been pain-free, it's been a good experience. --Rschen7754 06:24, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
Sorry, it is hard to keep up with a newborn at home. I have been trying to get into the admin console for a bit now, but all I get is white page. will retry later today to get in and approve it. --Jyothis (talk) 11:12, 8 November 2013 (UTC)
@Leinad: as you are the other listed admin, is this something that you can assist with? --Rschen7754 20:10, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

Rschen, has the thought ever crossed your mind that, maybe, the reason your CU self-nomination failed ... lies with you? With your actions? Maybe you shouldn't try to blame the sane people who oppose you (as "unnecessarily hostile"), and instead spend some time figuring out what you are doing wrong, and correct it. ~ DanielTom (talk) 19:51, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

Considering that I had the support of quite a few arbitrators, and one arbitrator told me flat out that he did not understand the rationale of the opposers, no. --Rschen7754 20:01, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Please explain this revert. PiRSquared17 (talk) 22:04, 21 November 2013 (UTC)

To me it is very incomprehensible and may very well be reverted away from the Forum, even if it is not strictly vandalism. If you want to reply to it, why don't you just restore it? --MF-W 22:28, 21 November 2013 (UTC)
It's a crosswiki troll, if you look at the block on enwiki. --Rschen7754 00:34, 22 November 2013 (UTC)

This looked good faith, although I agree some of the changes were not desirable. Maybe you could ask the unregistered user on his/her talk page why they made those changes,or discussed on talk:www.wikipedia.org template? The CSS might load faster if it is minified like that, but I agree it makes it unreadable. Latin was correctly moved to 100,000+. It seems that both terms for the min language are used, source: min:Bahaso_Minangkabau. Please do not use rollback for good faith edits in the future. Use undo. Oh, I didn't notice the page was protected (since 2008? why?). I guess you should explain your revert on their talk page. PiRSquared17 (talk) 04:26, 21 December 2013 (UTC)

I'm closing this thread down. As I've already expressed to PiRSquared, it is incredibly annoying, and grossly inappropriate, to continually be second-guessing my use of a tool on one particular wiki that I have been using on en.wikipedia and other wikis for years, and that I use cross-wiki now, solely because their views happen to disagree with mine in one particular area, where policy does not forbid that particular use. If you disagree with it, then either start a discussion to amend the policy, or start a desysop discussion, but don't continue to pester people who use rollback in ways that you do not agree with, or treat them like abusive admins that need to be desysopped, because that's sure what it's coming off as. --Rschen7754 05:29, 21 December 2013 (UTC)

Vandalism cross wiki affects eswiki

Hi Rschen, I write you to demands your help. Since yesterday someone creates a script on several small Wikipedias. The script uses FastButtons to paste vandalic messages on talk pages of eswiki users (see this page for more information). Today Tbloemink deletes a script on vewiki, but there is another page with this vandalic script:

Can you delete this page, and ban the Fbmal account, please. Thank you for your time, and spent a good time. Jmvkrecords (Intra Talk) 23:16, 10 December 2013 (UTC).

Done --Rschen7754 02:05, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
I hope you realize that there is nothing stopping this user (under a different account) from creating a copy of the script or even just running it in their browser console. There is no way to prevent the abuser from using this script, but there is a way to minimize the effects of the script: create an abusefilter for a certain rate limit, and set it to disallow with an appropriate warning. Just my two cents, sorry for butting in. PiRSquared17 (talk) 04:48, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, hopefully they don't think of that. --Rschen7754 09:22, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
Thank you Rschen for your help, it is very appreciate. Now, there are running two filters here programmed by local sysops. Is it better a globalfilter?
Best regards, Jmvkrecords (Intra Talk) 22:20, 11 December 2013 (UTC).
Global filters are actually still experimental, and only extend to here, incubator, species, and outreach, so it would not be very effective. --Rschen7754 22:27, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
Ok, thank you. Jmvkrecords (Intra Talk) 08:56, 13 December 2013 (UTC).

About Greek wv

Hi Rschen Thank for the trust you put in me. Greek wv is in dire straits. I'll try to do my best for this wiki. I have a significant experience as a travel writer.no any as bot operator. Let me know whether I should apply for a permanent or temporary role as admin. The second one sounds like the right idea to me. Cheers --Gobbler (talk) 22:43, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

For the size of el.wikivoyage, stewards will only grant 3 months temporary adminship. --Rschen7754 00:54, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

Have me unblocked

I just wanted to ask you if you could please unblock me on Wikipedia. Because I was just trying to improve articles, but someone found it to be spam. I try not to spam and do my best to help out. -- 70.190.250.58 9:53pm, January 29, 2014 (UTC)

No. --Rschen7754 04:53, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

Why? -- 70.190.250.58 9:56pm, January 29, 2014 (UTC)

Because you started spamming bad quality articles over dozens of wikis. --Rschen7754 04:56, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

But I already apologized and promised to really try my best not to spam. Don't you trust me? -- 70.190.250.58 10:00pm, January 29, 2014 (UTC)

No, because that's what you said last time and you kept doing it. --Rschen7754 04:59, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

Yeah, that was before. But now, I'll genuinely try to be really careful. Like, by editing just small stuff and not a whole bunch. I'm really sorry for what happened. -- 70.190.250.58 10:02pm, January 29, 2014 (UTC)

For the final time, no. And if you keep asking people to be unblocked, you will be blocked on Meta too. --Rschen7754 05:01, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

Outside Project Scope message for Jeff Horn

Hi, this is Jeff Horn and I received a message that my project proposal, DemocracyForum.org was outside the project scope, that I might be looking for wikipedia, and that it would be deleted. Can you please be more specific? It looked to me like I was in the appropriate area to create a project proposal... Thanks. Cheers, Jeff Horn 20:33, 28 February 2014‎

You may wish to review what Wikimedia is; this does not seem like a relevant project. --Rschen7754 22:22, 28 February 2014 (UTC)

This page states "The Wikimedia movement consists of the people and groups of people sharing common goals and activities with regard to creating and supporting free knowledge educative content". Perhaps my description was unclear- but my intention is exactly this- to allow users sharing common goals and activities (political/ social/ citizen membership) to gather, grow, and consolidate their individual perspectives for the education of all. This is a very important and unique kind of data, and is an important way to educate ourselves as to the opinions and needs of others. It can show us how well our actual governments recognize the democratic view. Moreover, I believe there is a need for a more efficient way to crowd source democratic values. Do you have further advise? Thanks again. Cheers, Jeff Horn ps: the best way to understand what I am trying to suggest is probably to look at the site (chrome is best, otherwise some bugs...)

It seems that you are using Wikimedia to promote another site... --Rschen7754 23:48, 28 February 2014 (UTC)

I can understand that- but I assure you my intentions are pure. I wrote SITE_NOT_NAMED front to back myself (although it clearly needs lots of work)- and I did so because people I spoke to about the idea did not seem to be able to imagine or picture what I was talking about. I was hoping it would serve as an example or possibility- to actually do this correctly I need a community. I have no interest in ownership or really the success of my model- just in the success and expansion of the democratic dialogue. Should I create a project that ommitts any link to my model? Or, is the idea simply not something that you think can fit here?

I'm sorry if I missed some aspect of etiquette in making my project proposal. I do apologize, and thank you for your time and effort. -Jeff Horn

I don't think that Wikimedia would be a good match for your project scope, unfortunately. --Rschen7754 00:42, 1 March 2014 (UTC)

I suppose I will have to agree to disagree. I appreciate the thought, and would encourage some effort to accommodate this type of data. I do deeply appreciate that wikimedia has created this process- and I hope you can see the value of the democratic energy inherant in your system. I won't ask more of your time- but please consider how important democracy is to you and to wikimedia. If you change your mind, or I just need to be more thourough/ eloquent- please let me know. This movement is afoot, and I just think if not wikimedia then where? What is the alternative, and if we get it wrong how much that cold cost us. Ok, I have said what I feel moraly obligated to say. Thanks again. Cheers, Jeff Horn

Congratulations!

Hello Rschen7754,

On behalf of the stewards' election committee, congratulations on your election as a steward! Your permissions have now been set and you are able to start working.

You have been added to the list of stewards and the stewards' chart. Please take a moment to check that your details are accurate and update them if necessary.

You have been given access to the mailing lists related to your steward duties, which include: checkuser-l, the private mailing list for Wikimedia checkusers, stewards-l, the private list for stewards. In addition, you have been or will be given access to the related private wikis, one for checkusers and the other solely for stewards, details of which will be provided.

If you use IRC, you will be given access to several channels, including #wikimedia-checkuserconnect and #wikimedia-privacyconnect. Please also idle in #wikimedia-stewardsconnect when you are available for duty.

Best of luck with your new tools; I am sure you will do a fantastic job. Please remember that your fellow stewards are always available if you need a second opinion, either via the mailing list or on IRC.

Request for feedback on my GSoC'14 proposal

Hi Rschen7754,

I am planning to work on the project titled "Tools for mass migration of legacy translated wiki content" this summer under Google Summer of Code. I have drafted a proposal for the same over the past few weeks. This project is going to help the translation adminstrators like you in a great way, as it would completely automate the tedious manual task of preparing a page for translation and then importing the translations into the Translate extension. You can check the proposal page for detailed information on how I plan to accomplish this.

As you would be an end user of this tool, it would be great if you could go through the proposal and provide feedback/suggestions. Your feedback would definitely help me improve the proposal as well help in creating an even better tool. You can do the same on the discussion page of the proposal or reply here, whichever is convenient for you. I look forward to hearing from you! Thank you!

P.S: I need to submit the proposal to Google by March 19, 2014.

Note that CantoneseWiki (last edit 2012-02-23) is also an inactive admin.--GZWDer (talk) 04:50, 6 April 2014 (UTC)

Please read the top of Admin activity review/2013/Data. --Rschen7754 04:53, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
Must admin activity review be based on Admin activity review/2013/Data? I don't think so. I think if possible, stewards should check every admins and find all really inactive admins.--GZWDer (talk) 04:57, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
Yes, because it keeps the process fair for each wiki. We simply don't have the resources to check each wiki in that way. A few extra inactive admins won't hurt anything; there is no rush. --Rschen7754 05:00, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
That is, if CantoneseWiki remains his inactivity, his admin bit will eventually be removed?--GZWDer (talk) 05:03, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
Yes, when we do the process next year... --Rschen7754 05:04, 6 April 2014 (UTC)

What ?

You told me me that a page I created will be deleted, but:

  • if you don't link to the page, it's impossible for me to understand what you are talking about;
  • I have probably never created a page (or done anything) on Meta. Are you using a robot for this kind of message?

Thanks. Seudo (talk) 07:51, 8 April 2014 (UTC)

Wikispecies Admin activity review

Rs, regarding the planned removal of "advanced rights" on Wikispecies, and the discussion on Village pump, I interprete that theres is a wish from the community that two of the incative users keep their rights; Wikispecies:User:Benedikt and Wikispecies:User:UtherSRG.

As for the others on the inactive list, I guess its good that they get removed as sysops, since while the list of sysops get decreased in numbers, this will more clearly illustrate the need for more sysops created from the present active members. Theres already a nomination of two new sysops.

Dan Koehl (talk) 04:39, 11 April 2014 (UTC)

That's what I gathered, and Benedikt and UtherSRG's rights will not be removed. --Rschen7754 04:46, 11 April 2014 (UTC)
Thank you. Wikispecies now have two newly created admins, and a third on nomination. When do you plan to remove the rights for the inactive admins? Dan Koehl (talk) 18:07, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
@Dan Koehl: I will work on this in the next few days, if not today; I apologize for the delay. --Rschen7754 08:56, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
Now done. --Rschen7754 22:48, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

Please note this page Rschen7754 has edited only lists wikis where global sysops do not have access to, in case that was unclear. For the log entry, which caused ru.wikiversity to become a GS wiki, see here and for the GS policy, which also mentions what needs to be done in order to request a change to the wiki sets, here. Kind regards, Vogone (talk) 15:58, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
@SergeyJ: As Vogone said, you will need to contact the steward who performed the action; I was not a steward at the time, and was only synchronizing the on-wiki list with the wiki set. --Rschen7754 08:56, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

Renaming of one user

Dear colleague! 18 July, you renamed the user Evil_Russian (talk · contribs · logs · User rights · Number of edits: · Global account information · Email this user) to Well-Informed_Optimist (talk · contribs · logs · User rights · Number of edits: · Global account information · Email this user) (I use underscores here, because other-way the template user7 works incorrectly). I see there a problem. It is a famous joke an optimist is a well instructed pessimist, and a pessimist is a well informed optimist. There is a highly productive and deeply respected user Pessimist2006 (talk · contribs · logs · User rights · Number of edits: · Global account information · Email this user), well known in the Russian Wikipedia just as Pessimist. So, the user name Well-Informed Optimist looks like an allusion to another Wikipedia user. Thank you for your attention, and sorry for my English. Gamliel Fishkin (talk) 13:11, 22 July 2014 (UTC)

Bureaucrat in small wiki

Hi. What are possibilities to gain bureaucrat status in wikis with allmost no community, where voting is de facto unfeasible? --Janezdrilc (talk) 22:08, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

We require voting in order to grant the bureaucrat right, and a significant number of votes (well more than what is needed to gain permanent adminship). However, stewards can help local wikis with no bureaucrat. In the past, when we have granted bureaucrat status with no voting, the bureaucrats tended to 1) go completely inactive soon thereafter, or 2) made controversial decisions when the wiki did become more active. Therefore, we have gone to requiring significant community support before granting the bureaucrat flag on wikis with no bureaucrats. --Rschen7754 01:24, 6 August 2014 (UTC)

Purge option in menu

Hi. Several slovene wikis lack the option "Purge" ("Osveži" in slovene) in the upper menu. Where can that be fixed? --Janezdrilc (talk) 21:24, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

That is a JavaScript gadget, not part of the MediaWiki software. @PiRSquared17: do you know where the code is for this? --Rschen7754 21:27, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

Aha, so... I think that would be: sl:MediaWiki:Gadget-purgetab.js. Now, is this option available just for admins and higher or for registered users too? --Janezdrilc (talk) 21:33, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

That would be admin-only, unfortunately. However, there are 9 active admins there, so someone should respond. --Rschen7754 21:36, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

Well, in allmost 1 month nobody hasn't responded. Ok, I'm going to ask PiRSquared17. Thanks anyway. --Janezdrilc (talk) 21:42, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

Letter petitioning WMF to reverse recent decitions

The Wikimedia Foundation recently created a new feature, "superprotect" status. The purpose is to prevent pages from being edited by elected administrators -- but permitting WMF staff to edit them. It has been put to use in only one case: to protect the deployment of the Media Viewer software on German Wikipedia, in defiance of a clear decision of that community to disable the feature by default, unless users decide to enable it.

If you oppose these actions, please add your name to this letter. If you know non-Wikimedians who support our vision for the free sharing of knowledge, and would like to add their names to the list, please ask them to sign an identical version of the letter on change.org.

I'm notifying you because you participated in one of several relevant discussions. -Pete F (talk) 22:19, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

As stewards were mentioned as possibly being involved in the process on wikimedia-l, I do not think that it would be proper for me to sign this (though other stewards may of course feel differently about their own involvement in the matter). --Rschen7754 01:13, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

Hi Rs, can you please give me sysop right on test2.wiki?? I don't find any actif bureaucrat to make this request.I believe that you are one of Steward who can help me.Regards --Grind24 (talk) 11:49, 19 December 2014 (UTC)

Have you tried asking them on Meta? We can't just give out rights on wikis with crats... --Rschen7754 14:33, 19 December 2014 (UTC)
Hum not yet, where i can request? ~If stewards can't give out rights on wikis with crats --Grind24 (talk) 15:15, 19 December 2014 (UTC)

rfc start how

How can I start a RFC for 2015 I am asking this as seems some sections of wikimedia and wikipedia do not share the same ip block ban system. This seems a weakness in the system as I thought thought be a good enhancement.

A more appropriate forum would be Wikimedia Forum, and your post would be more effective if you created an account. --Rschen7754 17:40, 3 January 2015 (UTC)

So why does meta then not use the global blocks and where as all other projects do ?

Inactıve sysops (Tr. wiki)

Hi,

Noumenon and Tembelejderha have no actions and no edits for two years. A few months ago, Noumenons checkuser rights has been removed according to global policy. Could you remove their sysop rights?

Regards.

(I added this message your talk page on en.wiki too.)
--Berm@nyamessage 16:54, 3 January 2015 (UTC)

@Bermanya: That will have to wait until the second round of AAR takes place. However, if your community wants to a) vote to remove them for inactivity or b) create your own inactivity policy, those are options too. --Rschen7754 16:58, 3 January 2015 (UTC)
OK, could you tell me please when will take the second round of AAR? --Berm@nyamessage 14:56, 4 January 2015 (UTC)
It has actually started, though it may take a while to get to tr.wiki. --Rschen7754 21:06, 18 January 2015 (UTC)

User supposed to be demoted of his/her rights?

https://en.wikiversity.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ALog&type=&user=&page=User%3ADraicone&year=&month=-1&tagfilter=&hide_thanks_log=1 - This user is currently a Wikiversity Administrator. On November you left him a message saying that he must respond in order to hold his rights. If he doesn't in a month, he will be demoted. He hasn't replied in a month and it's been approximately 2 months since you left this message. Just updating now you should remove his rights. --Goldenburg111 16:37, 29 January 2015 (UTC)

They were removed, just on our end through Meta. --Rschen7754 05:55, 30 January 2015 (UTC)
Alright. --Goldenburg111 12:43, 30 January 2015 (UTC)

round 2

Hi. I see that you were in some way responsible for AAR/2013. I also see that there were some problems with AAR/2014/Data, and that's why I've just prepared this list with inactive administrators. What do you think - is it useful? And another question - is it true that Покрајац should lose administrator rights last time? Openbk (talk) 14:19, 4 January 2015 (UTC)

@Openbk: WMF Staff are not concerned by the AAR, in your list,i see some special wiki that cannot be affected and some names of wmf staff.--Grind24 (talk) 14:43, 4 January 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the list! On first glance it looks okay, but I'll need to do some checking tonight. Grind24, the list includes all wikis, and then we (stewards) determine what wikis AAR applies to. --Rschen7754 15:13, 4 January 2015 (UTC)
The list doesn't include actions like marking revisions and importing pages. Also bureaucrats' actions are excluded. Is it good? If you say that the list is more or less good, I'll convert it to AAR/2014/Data and check again. Openbk (talk) 16:35, 4 January 2015 (UTC)
Crat actions should be included. (as should all logged actions, but if that's too hard, we always check the logged actions by hand before removing the flag) Also, if it would be possible to remove active admins from the list, it would be nice, but if that's too hard to do, we can work arund it. --Rschen7754 17:56, 4 January 2015 (UTC)
I have fix some thing and remove active users, it is now a little better  :) --Grind24 (talk) 19:56, 4 January 2015 (UTC)
Is there any case in which I can still help? :) Openbk (talk) 21:04, 18 January 2015 (UTC)
The next phase is leaving the notifications. Usually stewards do this. The policy allows for "delegates" approved by stewards to leave notices, though we haven't appointed one before, this being a new policy. But you can always ask at m:SN. (Generally we've had to be careful because people who have wanted to leave notices don't always know what they're doing, but so far you seem to know what you're doing...) --Rschen7754 21:13, 18 January 2015 (UTC)
Hi. Can I start? I think no one will write there nothing more. Openbk (talk) 18:39, 26 January 2015 (UTC)
I would wait a while longer, to see if more people comment... sorry I haven't followed up more on this, I've been pretty busy lately. --Rschen7754 05:22, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
Hi. You said that all logged actions should be included but I would like to be sure: Millosh and Feyyaztiftik should not be notified? Openbk (talk) 00:28, 7 February 2015 (UTC)
@Openbk: that is correct. --Rschen7754 04:02, 7 February 2015 (UTC)

Admin activity review message in Cantonese language

Hi Rschen7754, I've just seen you've posted the message to the community discussion page for the Admin activity review on the Cantonese Wikipedia. The message han been now translated in Cantonese, which is located in Admin activity review/2014/Notice to inactive right holders/yue and Admin activity review/2014/Notice to communities/yue. The Cantonese message is recommended to use instead of the Mandarin Chinese message. Thanks! :) Shinjiman (talk) 00:42, 6 February 2015 (UTC)

Unfortunately it seems that we've posted the notices already. Hopefully though for the next round (which I probably won't be involved in) they will use the new translation. --Rschen7754 04:06, 7 February 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for asking. And thank you so much for helping me the last few weeks, there's no way I would have been able to finish out AAR2014 otherwise. I'll still be around, just focused on different areas. --Rschen7754 02:20, 12 February 2015 (UTC)

Global CSS/JS migration

Hello Rschen7754. I saw you marked yourself migrated on User:Pathoschild/2014–2015 global script migration, but you still have some local JS pages that import global.js (such as uk:user:Rschen7754/common.js). The GlobalCssJs migration tool ignores pages with more than one edit by default, which may be why those were skipped. Do you want me to finish deleting the local pages that only import global.js with synchbot? —Pathoschild 18:29, 08 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi! ... hm, I thought all of those were tossed, I guess there were a few that were missed. I would say throw out anything that isn't on an English or multilingual wiki, since while I'm still technically a steward it probably wouldn't be such a great note to go out on if I tossed them myself Thanks! --Rschen7754 18:34, 8 February 2015 (UTC)
Done! You can see the full log on your archive page. :) —Pathoschild 15:11, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi there

Thank you for voting. I respect your decision to vote No. However I do not respect adding comments in the line after your vote pointing to the clarification questions I have sent to particular users on the user talk pages. What you are now engaged in is really active canvassing users to vote in particular way by trying to influence a particular outcome. I have no issue about comments, and receiving constructive comments where a person can look forward and improve is something that is desirable. Once again thank you for voting, but your subsequent actions and commentary were unnecessary and unwarranted. Vodomar (talk) 22:32, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

What is your definition of canvassing? --Rschen7754 05:08, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
Interpretation as per : http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/canvass - try to obtain support, to solicit support to vote in a particular way. Vodomar (talk) 21:46, 16 February 2015 (UTC)
Then, per your definition, aren't all comments on the voting page canvassing? --Rschen7754 01:40, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

AAR on su.wp

I know, it's just local user asking about it on Openbk, might as well help Openbk answering their questions. ;) --AldNonymousBicara? 02:14, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

Yeah, but your answer wasn't quite right... the whole purpose of AAR is to resolve the problem where the community has no local inactivity policy and not enough momentum to make one. --Rschen7754 02:23, 15 February 2015 (UTC)
Well I know, I just made a suggestion since that Wiki have a local crat, the user uchup19 (was it?) ask what is and how to create local inactivity policy which is stricter than Global AAR, so... I thought it was better for me to help them.--AldNonymousBicara? 12:39, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

So, could you proceed? --Andyrom75 (talk) 07:10, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
Please let me know. --Andyrom75 (talk) 00:44, 15 February 2015 (UTC)
Not until 1 month has gone by from the original notifications. --Rschen7754 00:44, 15 February 2015 (UTC)
If you are referring to it:voy:Wikivoyage:Lounge/Archivio/2015/01#IMPORTANTE: rassegna dell'attività di amministrazione, the notification is dated 13-January, so one month has already gone. --Andyrom75 (talk) 00:30, 16 February 2015 (UTC)
Not for the notification to the administrator themselves. --Rschen7754 00:31, 16 February 2015 (UTC)
I'm not sure to have understood which notification are you talking of. Could you share me a link? --Andyrom75 (talk) 09:32, 22 February 2015 (UTC)
Please let me know. --Andyrom75 (talk) 22:14, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
The notification to the inactive administrator that was left on their user talk page. --Rschen7754 01:52, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the clarification, I didn't know that the general policy of the 2y of inactivity is subject to a further time to be added to the user notification. In this specific case which is the deadline? --Andyrom75 (talk) 14:42, 27 February 2015 (UTC)
1 month from the time the user was individually notified... I assume you have read AAR, right? --Rschen7754 02:06, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

I meant, in this specific case which is the deadline? It should be next week, right? --Andyrom75 (talk) 12:38, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

Well, I did the desysop last night. --Rschen7754 16:17, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

Global user page migration

Hello Rschen7754. Synchbot deleted your local user pages on all wikis as requested. You can see the full log on your archive page. :) —Pathoschild 06:52, 21 February 2015 (UTC)

I edited your user page to convert some external links into wikilinks. (For links on the global portion of your user page, you can use [[w:m:page name]] to link to Meta.) Hope you don't mind! —Pathoschild 16:30, 22 February 2015 (UTC)
It seems normal links to Meta (like [[m:page name]]) work now, too. —Pathoschild 17:08, 22 February 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the fixes! --Rschen7754 18:36, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

AAR at the Vietnamese Wikipedia

Hi, it has been brought to my attention that you removed sysop rights from three users at the Vietnamese Wikipedia back in October under the AAR process. Although it is unlikely that these particular removals will cause much controversy, I would like a bit of clarification regarding the process, so that I can update our policy pages accordingly.

The policy states that it "does not override the authority of any currently existing review processes of any communities". As it happens, the Vietnamese Wikipedia does have a manual recall process (in which inactivity may be cited as a reason for removal) but no automatic review process. There was a proposal last year to institute such a process, but we failed to reach a clear consensus on the matter.

Has the AAR policy been interpreted to override the Vietnamese Wikipedia's process, weak as it is? Your note at our village pump was met with positive responses, so there may be support for strengthening our policies if needed. I appreciate any clarification you can provide.

 – Minh Nguyễn 💬 04:03, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

Unfortunately I don't really have a clear answer for you. It depends on whether one would consider the process to be a process where admin activity is reviewed by others on a regular basis, or if it is a dormant process that is never actually used. Some wikis have insisted that their process is a review process, and we have honored that. When I did the 2013 review, I did not think that the vi.wiki process was one, at first glance, but I could have been wrong. I suppose that I won't be the one who will have to make that determination for the future, since I have roughly two weeks left of being a steward and won't be handling the 2015 review. --Rschen7754 04:46, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

Thank you

Activity note

I'm on an extended sabbatical from Wikimedia for a few months to take care of real-life matters. I'm hoping to be back around May or June. I may come by and check on things, but I cannot guarantee a timely response. --Rschen7754 02:15, 1 April 2015 (UTC)

As an update, I've been checking in regularly, and have done quick tasks, but have been lacking the motivation to do anything substantial. Unfortunately, it will probably be this way for several more weeks. --Rschen7754 04:23, 22 April 2015 (UTC)

Re your reversion, if that is your position it needs to be further reverted

You reverted the edit https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=CheckUser_policy&oldid=11724189&diff=prev which included a variation of text that had existed though was removed by Avraham. Would you therefore either revert to the version of the text that existed by applying your same logic of consultation, or add a new variation of the text that has existed from early days. It was my intention to reflect the words that have existed.  — billinghurst sDrewth 09:42, 1 April 2015 (UTC)

I have reverted your change. There was a change by Avraham that lost this text, and it was discussed by stewards in their mailing list. If you wish to revert prior to Avraham's change, then I am comfortable with that revert.  — billinghurst sDrewth 04:12, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
"it was discussed by stewards in their mailing list" wow, I never knew that stewards could make policy by fiat! I did not see how Avraham's changes affected the meaning of the policy, but to prevent an edit war, I have reverted to the version the policy was as of December 2014. --Rschen7754 16:17, 4 April 2015 (UTC)

Hi. Regarding your comment on rewrite CU/OS policies. Just to let you know that I agree with you, but I doubt it'll happen. I'm tired to open discussions at Meta to get things done to archive them later with zero comments added on it after even years opened... Or people hate me (most likely) or they're not interested in those "boring" things, or both. There's an old attempt for example. Sorry if this is off-topic, I just had to say it. Best regards. -- M\A 22:14, 5 April 2015 (UTC)

Sadly, I agree, especially given the current state of the steward team. --Rschen7754 00:14, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
