Bots[edit]

removal of talk page content[edit]

You appear to have removed some content that I put on my user talk page, and you claimed that you did so to remove "private data". The only possible part of what I posted that might appear to be "private data" was my own email address, which is not a private address. There were also some imaginary "conversations" that I wrote and copies of some user talk page discussions, such as that from your user talk page, but there was no reason for you to remove the content that I posted. Confusion[edit]

I just read your message on kbd.wiki. Thank you for going into all this trouble and letting me know, and there is no need to apologize, of course. But to be honest, I am confused.

I occasionally see cratship requests being denied due to size of the wiki (Don't see the logic behind it though), but I don't understand why adminship became temporary all of a sudden.

I'd surely appreciate it if you could specify the policy in question.

Removal of photo[edit]

Hi:

Recently a photo was removed from the David Levy Wikiquote and Wikipedia. Given all the rules and guidelines it appears I had submitted everything properly but apparently not. I need assistance in uploading the photo. What should I do differently to upload the photo. It is not a copyright photo and was provided by the author.

Leak of private email by Vibhijain[edit]

Hi,

Understand your a steward on meta. I dont normally make such requests however there is something I would like you to look into. A private email sent by me to a user (Vibhijain) was leaked by him here [1]. I dont deny the email nor do I see any wrong in it. I dint intend to do anything about it as I felt though the guy is immature he has tremendous potential to do good on wiki globally. This guy was warned not to leak private emails on meta, but he retorted "... This can't be considered a as warning at all."! Just wondering if anything can be done about this. That discussion ended, last comment, 14 September, 2008, and was for information, no decision was made on action. Are you saying that your global locks were based on what was done before then by Poetlister?
From Poetlister global contributions, the only account of the above that was active recently was on Wikiversity, where he is a user in good standing and has not been a problem. So the only effect of the global lock is to prevent him from editing there.
Is there a wiki where Poetlister was recently causing disruption, perhaps something I missed? If not, would you consider unlocking, at least Poetlister, which seems to be the name by which he is most widely known. Thanks. --Abd 22:52, 2 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am likewise concerned over the lock of Poetlister. The user is, or rather was contributing positively to enwikiversity. Locking a user who is editing in good faith, regardless of past history, doesn't sit well with me. The harm comes from the good contributions which are lost as a result of him not being allowed to edit anymore, when his only recent edits have been productive. Getting the ballot dump from the last election[edit]

Hi Matanya! Thanks again for the great work you did helping out with the board election. I have been doing some number crunching on various wikimedia datasets [2]. The ballot data, removed of voter names of course, is going to be made public at some point, but the sooner that could happen, the better. I don't always have this much free time to learn from datasets, and we also have a referendum scheduled for August. Hello, glad you came here to discuss this issue. One thing that doesn't reduce my responsibility regarding this wrong action, as you can see in the logs, is that I wasn't the only steward how fulfilled this request. For example: here. Anyway, to get to the point, I have learned my lesson form this failure, and a rush removal of such, wouldn't happen on my side again. Moreover, I have checked where was my point of failure, and I found out that my mistake was I didn't read the result of the vote carefully enough and missed this very important detail. I sincerely apologizes about this action, and hope no harm had happened. Local unblock[edit]

Hi!

I'm an editor/admin on Portuguese Wikibooks and noticed that this action inadvertently prevented the user to edit on that project, where as already mentioned here, he gives valuable contributions (both in discussions about the project and the development of the content of wikibooks - namely b:pt:Logística). I tried to undo that locally (by going to b:pt:Special:Block/Vapmachado), but I wasn't successful. Could you help me with this issue?

Hello, This user has being abusing many wikis within wikis and outside the wikiworld. His lock shouldn't be removed in my opinion, but if you wish to let him edit on ptwikibooks two options are available: 1) the user should be renamed locally, so the lock wouldn't affect him. 2) you can ask anther steward to review the action, and if he finds it was wrong, he can remove it. best Matanya 17:04, 20 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Yesterday I posted on VR a complaint about an IP spammer, who seems to be back as 188.51.0.32 xwiki-contribs • xwiki-date (alt) • ST • IP info • WHOIS • robtex • gblock • glist • abuselog • bullseye. The problem is that the Toolserver fails to open a page with cross-wiki contributions, which makes tracking down the vandal harder. Yesterday I manually came across four projects where he left traces behind, today I decided to report it here on sight just after his reappearance on ukwiki. Do you have a technical possibility to find every edit by 188.55.9.180 xwiki-contribs • xwiki-date (alt) • ST • IP info • WHOIS • robtex • gblock • glist • abuselog • bullseye and 188.51.0.32 xwiki-contribs • xwiki-date (alt) • ST • IP info • WHOIS • robtex • gblock • glist • abuselog • bullseye? Some concerns regarding 小躍@hak.wikipedia[edit]

Hi Matanya, I have some concerns regarding the approval of sysop flag for 小躍@hak.wikipedia. He requested for sysop at 02:12 3rd Aug. Within an hour 3 accounts were created [3] [4] [5]. These were the only accounts that supported his application. When someone questioned this on zhwikipedia, he immediately go and block these three accounts for one year, but the reason was 'spam'.

I am quite concerned over this case. Though his application would've been approved even no one voted support, these accounts are extremely likely to be sockpuppets, and to have someone who uses sockpuppets in RfA is very disturbing. --Bencmq 07:08, 24 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

confusion[edit]

Hello Matanya. Normally stewards have to add temp adminships to Steward requests/Permissions/Approved temporary when they grant the access, not when they archive. As I use a script that automatically archives steward requests every day, they go to the normal archives too, but I'm not sure that's a big issue if they are duplicate this way, as long as they stay in the archives.

Done Everything is okay now. But I dunno what I could do to solve this issue in the long-term... Stewards, when they give temporary access, never use the same words, so it would be hard to do this automatically (sometimes they never use temporary or expire in their message :P). Hard problem[edit]

Hi, I have an important question. In our Wiki, we had approved (with consensus) that every user should have more than 75 percents of the votes to be an admin (In English Wikipedia it's 70%). All of our sysops had been an admin with a bigger than 75% of the votes. Currently there is a RfA voting and the nominated user has a percentage between 70 & 75. The problem is here that some of our bureaucrats said he may be an admin with a percentage more than 70! I know this is very unsound, but I wanna know if they do this and the user became an admin with a percentage less than 75, then what we can do? 30% of the opposites are the admin, and the NPov-nullity of the user was proved with many discussions, but it seems that our bureaucrats want to neglect all of the rules and make him an admin. Could you please have a short look at en:Automatic milking and then at he:חליבה מכנית? Interwiki links connect these articles to each other (as well as other language articles; see also the Commons category). Now I want to know what exactly the Hebrew article is about. From the used images and the few English words in it I guess that it's about milking dairy cattle in general, about milking machines, or about types of milking parlors (see the bits below the "סוגי מחלובים" heading), but not especially about automatic milking ("milking robots"). So either interwiki links have to be corrected globally (I would do that if I knew what the Hebrew article is about, and which other topics would match better), or the images in the Hebrew article (and maybe parts of the text) have to be changed/updated to actually reflect its topic. Hi Matanya, you helped us yesterday at ksh-wikipedia by reversing a change caused by vandalism. ksh-wikipedia is suffering since nearly 2 weeks under extreme vandalism. There seems to be one person who deletes the contents of up to 10 pages per day substituting it by different sentences. They all have one thing in common. The new sentence always contains the words "Harald Krichel". I have heard that there is a possiblity to block saving special words by adding a filter. Is this correct? I am reading what you write and I did see no example what-so-ever of personal attacks by me. Perhaps you could give an example which is a worse personal attack than the (now more than 5 year) continuing attack by pseudonymous (but clearly western Dutch) accounts.

I am a moderator at the nds-nl wiki, and I feel the need to step forward for Erik Warmelink / User:129.125.102.126 's defense. I have followed his case for a long time, and I did not step forward on his block, about a year ago, because he requested so on nds-nl wiki when the block was applied. At first, I would like to say that I acknowledge that this user has made mistakes, or attacks. Several blocks as a result are justified, he was going over the edge. But I also watched the process of his indef'ed block, and in my opinion, that block is unjustified. A global, indeffed blocked would be justified for a "troll" pur sang, or a spam bot. Both qualifications do not apply to this user. In the last year, the user has made almost only constructive contributions to the nds-nl wiki. Second, the persons that effected the blocks (on request of Trijnstel if I am correct) did not explain the reason for the indef block, and don't even understand the reason for the request because they don't know the language the argument was in, according to their own user pages. Like I said, I do not deny this user has made mistakes, and individual wikis may block him when appropriate, but on the other hand, wikipedia is not served by shutting up all users that have a critical sound. Please watch his contributions on the nds-nl wiki for the last year, and you'll see we are talking about a useful contributor, maybe too critical about authority, but with more useful contributions than attacks. So, again, in my opinion, the global block is much too harsh a punishment, he has served his time, give him a chance, and punish where appropriate only. For the record, I am not his friend, I do not know the man in person even, never met him, but feel like unjustice is done here. A critical mind should not be banned, it may prove to be very useful. Closing RfXs[edit]

Hi Matanya. I've just noticed that you closed Rillke's request for CN adminship. Well, actually that wasn't much a closure. Closing request does not end with putting a done below the request and giving the requested right. As a local bureaucrat here, you should know that and also do the other stuff (update the CN admin list, remove the request from the page and archive it, update the Votings-template, putting a closed-request-template around the request, adding the correct category and inform the user about it on their talk page). I haven't done all that yet, simply because I think that the closing 'crat should do all that and because I don't wish to work as cleaner for everyone here. (In fact, there have been several cases like that where someone did that, which is why I don't do that clean up anymore.) When closing any local right requests, please keep in mind to do everything surrounding it and not just giving the right and leaving everything else undone. The main reason I haven't done that cleanup is, that I remember that some fellow 'crats usually only do things like that, which should certainly be improved. An important message about renaming users[edit]

Dear Matanya,

I am cross-posting this message to many places to make sure everyone who is a Wikimedia Foundation project bureaucrat receives a copy. If you are a bureaucrat on more than one wiki, you will receive this message on each wiki where you are a bureaucrat.

As you may have seen, work to perform the Wikimedia cluster-wide single-user login finalisation (SUL finalisation) is taking place. This may potentially effect your work as a local bureaucrat, so please read this message carefully.

Why is this happening? As currently stated at the global rename policy, a global account is a name linked to a single user across all Wikimedia wikis, with local accounts unified into a global collection. Previously, the only way to rename a unified user was to individually rename every local account. This was an extremely difficult and time-consuming task, both for stewards and for the users who had to initiate discussions with local bureaucrats (who perform local renames to date) on every wiki with available bureaucrats. The process took a very long time, since it's difficult to coordinate crosswiki renames among the projects and bureaucrats involved in individual projects.

The SUL finalisation will be taking place in stages, and one of the first stages will be to turn off Special:RenameUser locally. This needs to be done as soon as possible, on advice and input from Stewards and engineers for the project, so that no more accounts that are unified globally are broken by a local rename to usurp the global account name. Once this is done, the process of global name unification can begin. The date that has been chosen to turn off local renaming and shift over to entirely global renaming is 15 September 2014, or three weeks time from now. In place of local renames is a new tool, hosted on Meta, that allows for global renames on all wikis where the name is not registered will be deployed.

Your help is greatly needed during this process and going forward in the future if, as a bureaucrat, renaming users is something that you do or have an interest in participating in. The Wikimedia Stewards have set up, and are in charge of, a new community usergroup on Meta in order to share knowledge and work together on renaming accounts globally, called Global renamers. Stewards are in the process of creating documentation to help global renamers to get used to and learn more about global accounts and tools and Meta in general as well as the application format. As transparency is a valuable thing in our movement, the Stewards would like to have at least a brief public application period. If you are an experienced renamer as a local bureaucrat, the process of becoming a part of this group could take as little as 24 hours to complete. You, as a bureaucrat, should be able to apply for the global renamer right on Meta by the requests for global permissions page on 1 September, a week from now.

In the meantime please update your local page where users request renames to reflect this move to global renaming, and if there is a rename request and the user has edited more than one wiki with the name, please send them to the request page for a global rename.

Stewards greatly appreciate the trust local communities have in you and want to make this transition as easy as possible so that the two groups can start working together to ensure everyone has a unique login identity across Wikimedia projects. Completing this project will allow for long-desired universal tools like a global watchlist, global notifications and many, many more features to make work easier.

Hi; I am a student in Başkent University. ip 212.156.67.30 is used by Başkent Üniversitesi in Turkey. But it was blocked in Turkish wikipedia for unlimited time. block begins: 23:15, 6 Feb. 2011. Since that time whole university can not make any edits in Turkish wikipedia. We university students want to edit turkish wikipedia. Local adminstrators say they are very angry with an old time user and they dont unblock th i.p. and they punish a whole university. It has been a long time and probably the person that makes them angry is graduate by now. Thank you for help.

When i have an account at home or anywhere else when i login with that account at the university it automatically blocks the acoount and says:

Not just me but also my friends are the same. Our accounts get automatically blocked when we login at the university. Cant you easily ask the admins at the turkish wikipedia to unblock that i.p. pls. Thank you sir.

Hello, I have come to you before for answers regarding a wikimedia block [12] and I was hoping you could help me out again.

In the last hour, my IP address was blocked and I am totally confused as to why. I've emailed and talk page messaged the user who blocked me, but I'm coming to you because I have dealt with you before.

My block reads: The block was made by WMFOffice (meta.wikimedia.org). The reason given is Long-term abuse.

As you may know, the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees approved a new "Access to nonpublic information policy" on 25 April 2014 after a community consultation. The former policy has remained in place until the new policy could be implemented. That implementation work is now being done, and we are beginning the transition to the new policy.

An important part of that transition is helping volunteers like you sign the required confidentiality agreement. All Wikimedia volunteers with access to nonpublic information are required to sign this new agreement, and we have prepared some documentation to help you do so.

The Wikimedia Foundation is requiring that anyone with access to nonpublic information sign the new confidentiality agreement by 15 December 2015 (OTRS users have until 22 December 2015) to retain their access. You are receiving this email because you have access to nonpublic information and are required to sign the confidentiality agreement under the new policy.

Signing the confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information is conducted and tracked using Legalpad on Phabricator. User:Matanya, I am turning to you for your unbiased and professional opinion about an edit on the Wikipedia article concerning the archaeological site "Emmaus Nicopolis," a place in Israel, and where I have suggested a more neutral edit so as to read: "The site today is inside Canada Park and is maintained by the Jewish National Fund of Canada," as opposed to the current edit that reads: "The site today is inside Canada Park in the West Bank, and maintained by the Jewish National Fund of Canada." As it stands, two Arab editors have joined in on the Talk-Page discussion (see: Talk:Emmaus Nicopolis#Location of Emmaus-Nicopolis (Imwas)) to voice their general disapproval at implying the archaeological site is in Israel, while Jewish participants (including myself) have wanted to omit the words "West Bank" in the article, that is to say, to keep it neutral, without mentioning Israel, neither the West Bank. Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.
