Sami Mlouhi (Sami Mlouhi)[edit]

I am Sami Mlouhi, the current secretary of the Affiliations Committee (AffCom) and Wikimedian from Tunisia since 2015. I have been contributing to the french, english and arabic Wikipedias, Wikimedia Commons, wikiquote, wikidata and Meta. I have more than 15 036 edits, 5599 photos and more than 200 articles.

I am an active membre in Wikimedia Tunisia User Group, I made various tasks related to community building. These included conducting workshops for new Wikipedians, training Wikipedians, hosting meetups, recruitment of volunteers etc. Also, I was involved with organizing events. These included Wikipedia workshops, seminar, conferences, Wiki loves Africa, Wiki loves Earth, Wiki loves Monuments, editathons, and school programs.

I served as a member of MedinaPedia project, Tunisia Project and medicine project in Wikipedia. In Wikidata, I am member of WikiProject Medicine.

I have participated in many National and International Events related to Wikimedia projects such as Wikimania 2018 and 2019, WikiConvention francophone (2016,2017,2018,2019), WikiIndaba 2018 and 2019, Wikidata Conference 2017 and Wikimdia Tunisia meeting in Sousse.

I can speak arabic, french, english and italian. I have many experience on social media and international cooperation. I'm familiar with the organizational governance, international policies and political system and conditions in various countries as a member of Amnesty international and the Tunisian Red Crescent, that could be benefit to global social movement like Wikimedia.

Apart from being a Wikipedian, I was member of photo club of Tunis and Médecins Sans Frontières. I encourage the Creative Commons movement and OpenStreetMap where I edit frequently.

I won the AISEC debate challenge in 2015.

1. How do you think affiliates work best together to partner on effective projects and initiatives?

I think that frequent meetings between affiliates that share common interests is the key to built high-impact projects such as WikidataCon (the meeting of Wikidata community) and WikiConvention francophone (the meeting of the french speaking community). Also, an interchange between new and old affiliates can be beneficial. In fact, the new user groups have the enthusiasm while the old affiliates have the experience.

2. What do you see as the role of affiliates in the Wikimedia movement in the next three years?

I believe the affiliates should not only recruit more volunteers for the different projects of Wikimedia, but also play more role in developing the skills of the wikimedian by making frequent training and workshops (about the new tools of Wikidata, the new projects of Wikimedia...). Also, affiliates should develop partnerships and plan activities which support the 2030 movement strategy vision.

3. What do you feel you will bring to the committee that makes you a uniquely qualified candidate?

  1. I can bring my social perspectives and the knowledge about Wikimedia I have collected during my years as a volunteer.
  2. I can bring diversity since I come from the Global South.
  3. I am enthusiastic and I will be available whenever you want.

4. Which subcommittee are you most interested in serving on?

Conflict Prevention & Intervention subcommittee.

Questions for the candidate[edit]

Ankan Ghosh Dastider (ANKAN)[edit]

I am Ankan Ghosh Dastider, currently working as a board member of Wikimedia Bangladesh and assistant editor of WikiBarta (the online magazine that publishes news of wiki world in Bengali to our contributors and readers). I have been contributing to various Wikimedia projects since 2012, including Wikipedia, Wikidata and Commons with more than 9400 edits and created more than 405 articles. In 2015 I was awarded 'Best Wikipedian (5th position)' in Bengali Wikipedia.

Since 2014, I have been active in off-wiki activities more. I have organized and coordinated several programs and collaborated with other communities for edit-a-thons, workshops, meetups, photowalks and awareness-building programs. Till now I have conducted 9 workshops in schools, colleges, and universities located all over Bangladesh; where new and eager attendees were taught about wiki projects and how to contribute here. The first Wikidata label-a-thon in Bangladesh along with a regional committee was organized by me. In collaboration with the levant community, I organized the Arab-Bengali Cultural Exchange program in which both the Bengali and Levant community translated articles from other languages representing their culture and tradition. Currently running edit-a-thon WikiForHumanRights is being coordinated by me in Bengali Wikipedia. I am quite familiar with wiki policies and working as an OTRS volunteer since 2018. I worked as an Operations Committee member of Wikimedia Bangladesh (Community Director, Planning & Outreach) for 1 year from October 2017 and later joined the executive committee as a board member for the chapter in 2018. I attended Wikimedia Conference 2018, Wikimania 2019 and some regional conferences before. I got connected to a lot of Wikimedians through these conferences and the Arab-Bengali Culutural exchange program was also an output of such a conference (WMCon 18).

I am well familiar with documentation process. As an assistant editor of Wikibarta, I write wiki related news, articles around the world in Bengali since April 2018. I translate articles written by international community members, take interviews of contributors connected to the Wikimedia movement which got published in every issue of WikiBarta, till now 6 issues got published. Some of the interviews are: [1] (can be read in English as well), [2], [3], [4] etc. Except that I took a number of interviews of renowned scientist, Nobel laureate economist (Interview of Abdullah Abu Sayeed, Amartya Sen, Abed Chaudhury) while I was voluntarily connected to a magazine.

I am coordinating social media of Wikimedia Bangladesh and all the Bengali wiki projects since 2017. I can speak and write Bengali (bn-N), English (en-3), know Hindi (hi-1) and Assamese (as-1). I am the coordinator of a regional committee of Wikimedia Bangladesh and have coordinated and communicated with new communities before.

I am experienced with coordinating new members or groups, handling emerging communities. So I hope I can use my previous experience in a better way by serving ‘Affilicate Recognition’ team of the Affiliations Committee.

  1. How do you think affiliates work best together to partner on effective projects and initiatives?
Discussions are the best way to start working together regardless of projects and initiatives. The project or initiative finds its pros and cons after this kind of meetings or discussions. Collaboration between different affiliates are also very healthy way of working together and achieving greater benefits. Newer dimensions open, future problems can be identified and solutions for those can be made ready before they even appeared.
  2. What do you see as the role of affiliates in the Wikimedia movement in the next three years?
Wikimedia movement is getting bigger and bigger day by day, covering educational, cultural, safety and various sectors. Undoubtedly, in the next three years, the picture will be even bigger than it is now as we are accelerating towards fulfilling our goal for Strategy 2030. To continue the movement in a more inclusive and organized way, affiliates play the most vital role here, by creating rightful and inclusive groups, proper and needful discussions and taking needful measures on the basis of this.
  3. What do you feel you will bring to the committee that makes you a uniquely qualified candidate?
I have been contributing for 7 years in both online and offline activities by planning, coordinating, organizing and collaborating in various degrees. I mixed with newcomers, regional committee members and with international communities for collaborative purposes. I faced challenges and by united efforts overcame many of them. I am from the Global south region, so I am especially well-aware and experienced dealing with the expectations, demands of this region. I hope to bring the reflection of these experiences in future decisions or steps of the affiliation committee.
  4. Which subcommittee are you most interested in serving on?
    Affiliate Recognitions subcommittee

Questions for the candidate[edit]

  1. ...

Mehman Ibragimov (Mehman97)[edit]

I'm Mehman Ibragimov, participant in Wikimedia projects since 2016. Most of all I'm active in Georgian Wikipedia, Wikidata, Meta-Wiki and Wikimedia Commons. Statistically I have over 35 thousand editing in all Wikimedia projects. Also wrote over 600 articles on Georgian Wikipedia and several articles on other Wikipedia. This is a short description of my WP activity.

Since 2017, I have been Member of Board of the Wikimedia UG Georgia and since that time I have been active in Wikimedia life. During this time, I successfully conducted and oversaw various projects, including Wiki Loves Earth, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wikipedia Asian Month, contests referral to gender issues, and since 2019, together with regional wiki-colleagues, I started a new contest Wiki Loves Caucasus. I also contribute to the development of the Wikimedia movement and to the development of Wikimedia projects in Georgia, so I conduct regular trainings for all interested people, most of all for young people on work in Wikimedia projects, especially Wikipedia. I facilitate regular wikimeetings to create a base for the Wikimedia strategy in Georgia, for example, this year I was able to organize two meetings as part of the Wikimedia strategy salons.

Since August 13, 2019, I have been the Chairman of Wikimedia UG Georgia and for this position in a short time, one of my achievements is to receive an APG for our user group, which I am very proud of and I hope that this will help the development of the Wikimedia movement in Georgia more. Also, since November of this year I'm also an AffCom Advisor. The questions below are already familiar to me and my answers have not changed since I was elected as an advisor.

I participated in Wikimedia Summits (2018, 2019 and soon 2020) and Wikimania 2019, where I also presented a report on our new contest.

Specifically about me, along with English, I also speak Russian (native), Turkish (native), Azerbaijani and Georgian (native). Also, I have a lot of free time to work as a member of AffCom, so that I can freely help everyone.

1) How do you think affiliates work best together to partner on effective projects and initiatives?

The most important thing in the work of affiliation, I think, is constant dialogue and communication, the best thing is face-to-face communication within the community. This gives an advantage in the work of affiliation and resolves misunderstanding between people involved in working in the community. In this case, affiliation quickly solves all problems and can effectively develop all sorts of projects.

2) What do you see as the role of affiliates in the Wikimedia movement in the next three years?

AffCom is one of the key committees within Wikimedia, which is responsible for Capacity Building of the entire WM movement, in the form that it's responsible for creating and recognizing affiliations and their reporting. Despite the fact that at the moment different communities want to create their own affiliation and work more actively for the development of Wikimedia projects, I think that in the next three years the AffCom will be loaded with these case, it will also be loaded with the control of these organizations. So, I think the main role of AffCom in the next three years will be building the capacity of the Wikimedia movement. Besides this, since the changes in the movement have begun, the role of AffCom in this, as the leading committee in the movement, is also very important.

3) What do you feel you will bring to the committee that makes you a uniquely qualified candidate?

I think, as a person who understands the work of the WMF and AffCom, as well as a person who can collaborate and work with different communities, differing views, cultures, etc., I can help them in creating and developing their communities (affiliations) for the benefit of the whole Wikimedia movement.

4) Which subcommittee are you most interested in serving on?

Affiliate Recognitions subcommittee

1) How do you think affiliates work best together to partner on effective projects and initiatives?

In my experience, each new affiliate must have established at least one good practice work charter within the affiliate.
ideally, they should discuss around a provisional periodic action plan for a period such as a year for example.

Currently, the affiliates are the support of the foundation around the world, they have two seats on the board of trustee.
in the near future, affiliates will be at the heart of the restructuring of the foundation,
relations with the foundation are so close that they must all apply the new recommendations of the 2030 strategy.

3) What do you feel you will bring to the committee that makes you a uniquely qualified candidate?

I have a long experience to help the new creation affiliates in Africa and in the Arab countries.

With over 160 affiliations if it's good to find new affiliate management methods and process that I can disposed help.

Biplab Anand (Biplab Anand)[edit]

Hi there ! I'm Biplab Anand from both my name and Wikimedia Username, current member of Affiliation Committee (Affcom) and a decent multilingual Global rollbacker, Global sysop and also a Global renamer from Nepal. I've involved in Wikimedia projects since 2013 and have been actively involved in Maithili, Nepali and Hindi Wikipedia as well as other Asian language Wikipedias. I'm one of the founding member of Maithili Wikimedians User Group, also part of Wikimedians of Nepal & a major volunteer for the formation of Maithili Wikipedia. I have got the opportunities to meet the Wikip(m)edians from all around the globe at major wiki events such as Wikimania 2015, Wikimania 2018, Wikimania 2019, BN10, TTT 2015, WikiConference India 2016, WikiConference 2017, etc. Not only this, I've also been involved in all the major events, outreach, meetups of Wikimedia movement organized by MWUG & Wikimedia Nepal. All this & my Global Account Stats reflect my active dedication, better coordination & motivation, a bit experienced & skilled in the involvement with Wikimedia Projects. Moreover, I have also been involved in motivating & collaborating with indic language communities in the region to form their User Groups. In this way, my deep interest in Wikimedia Projects and my contribution in it excites me to be the part of Affiliations Committee again. Thanks for your consideration.

* How do you think affiliates work best to together to partner on effective projects and initiatives?
Affiliates have quite active wikip(m)edians as members from around the globe that's make it helpful for them to take effective decisions on recommendations. As a result of such committee with diverse experience also helping out all those enthusiastic Wikip(m)edians around the world.

* What do you see as the role of affiliates in the Wikimedia movement in the next three years?
As far as my views are concerned on affiliates role, I think affiliates will take major responsibilities towards the expansion of active user groups and chapters to all the regions where there is lack of Wikimedia movements and it's advantages to the community. Affiliates should also support existing user groups and chapters for their more effective and active involvements.

* What do you feel you will bring to the committee that makes you a uniquely qualified candidate?
I am Nepal born with understanding of multiple languages and we have started our Maithili Wikimedians User Group and I am also one of the active Wikip(m)edian in my region and member of Wikimedians of Nepal User Group. In our region, there is not enough user groups and even chapter. So, if I get opportunity to be the member of affiliates committee my experience of Wikimedia movement in the region will help the committee to make better recommendations for the expansion user groups and chapter in this region as it really need.

* Which subcommittee are you most interested in serving on?
Chapter/ThOrg Recognition

Questions for the candidate[edit]

  1. ...

Edgar Rosero Villacís (Edjoerv)[edit]

Greetings! My name is Edgar Rosero Villacís, I have been a wikimedian for more than 5 years already, and around the same time I started helping in the formation, expansion and growth of Wikimedistas de Ecuador. Through these years I have been very involved within my local community serving as the national coordinator, which has led me to learn a lot about how our movement works in different contexts: People who are involved in a local affiliate organization have diverse goals and motivations to be part of our movement, and they need to be heard because of the value of their vision and thoughts; people seek to be involved with the broader community while respecting each other's spaces and also editors seek to be recognized for their volunteer work and time. I have been growing along with the wonderful people that make part of the affiliate I've been working on and this experience has brought me more than just joy: I feel like I am ready to make people inside and outside our movement what it feels like to be part of these kind of communities where one can experience and learn from other's expertise.

Not only I've been working closely to help Wikimedistas de Ecuador grow as a user group, but I've been also involved with the broader Wikimedia movement. I've been to Wikimedia Conference 2016 and 2018, as well as the Wikimedia Summit 2019. I've been part of the regional instance that WMEC-UG belongs to, IberoCoop, having attended IberoConf 2017 and 2019. Interacting with people from other countries and sharing what we do as well as what they teach others has also been a great way to understand why affiliates are what they are and how we can improve their development. This has led me to reflect on what we are doing around the movement, since I found out that the struggles for smaller groups are in some ways very similar to groups of volunteers that are bigger and that have more resources, and what brings them together. I am deeply interested in breaking down this gap of volunteer work, as every model of our current affiliates need to be fairly recognized and supported. During the Strategy process I shared this thoughts with some members of the Roles and Responsibilites group. I felt the need to raise my voice and bring what I have learned to these instances in order to give back what this incredible movement has given me.

A little more about me: I am fluent in both spanish and english, and have been learning some italian a couple years ago. I've been dedicating myself to my user group continously and have plenty of time to be part of the AffCom.

1) How do you think affiliates work best together to partner on effective projects and initiatives?
Collaborative work means having to cooperate between two or more entities, knowing well that every part of this collaboration is different and have a unique point of view. Each affiliate has its own context and background, but our mission is what unite us all. Keeping in mind that we all work towards the same goals makes it easier for any affiliate to start a project or program together, and partnerships between our affiliates are relatively easier than having to partner with other institutions. There are affiliates that could share some of their context, and that's why our regional initiatives are thriving and working well, but we also need to realize that we can work with people outside our vecinities and create effective projects with different affiliates we never thought of.
At first, the initiatives that could start in a specific country or a specific theme could be shared around, as many of our affiliates already have on-going partnerships with international institutions that have representation or offices in other countries where there are wikimedians that could also develop a project with their local counterpart. This could not only bring the cooperation within our movement, but help us expand our mission in places where we haven't had any presence lately, bringing together new wikimedians and promoting regional cooperation too. Another thing that could make affiliates work together is sharing experiences focused on specific topics outside the established conferences that we all attend to, to help each other to improve their skills and get feedback from other members in our movement. All of this could lead to start projects and initiatives that will keep growing and strengthening our affiliates.
2) What do you see as the role of affiliates in the Wikimedia movement in the next three years?
Affiliates are undisputably our biggest asset in the mission of becoming the essential infrastructure of the ecosystem of free knowledge. People that work tirelessly to promote our vision among their fields are what have been keeping this movement alive, whether it's online of offline. Affiliates' key role in the next three years will be to bring together every other human to add to the sum of all knowledge, and that only works with people around each country, city, place or institution spreading the word on what we do. Apart from that, we also need to understand that we are no longer a static movement that keeps the work within our fellows, but we are a thriving movement that excludes no one and where a lot of people will feel safe and at home; all of this helps us to get better representation from diverse perspectives that are not being heard in the media or the world outside our screens, and affiliates should ensure that we get as many people as we can that want to raise their own voices and also be part of that ecosystem that we're building.
3) What do you feel you will bring to the committee that makes you a uniquely qualified candidate?
I know what it means to lead an ever-changing and fast-growing user group, with no resources and a lot of experience in partnerships that can help these groups over come their daily struggles. I also know a lot about how to develop small comunities as I took a lot of time traveling from city to city in my own country to expand our movement whenever I found an editor or volunteer with big motivation and passion for Wikimedia. I have also dealt with some conflict in the early stages of our process to become a user group since the first two weeks when we got our recognition from AffCom, another user group appeared in our country and we solved this problem while not losing focus on our work. I know I will do my best to help the existing affiliates to understand how to work together and move forward in our mission, and I believe I will also help to expand our movement in areas where we have no presence to this date.
4) Which subcommittee are you most interested in serving on?
The affiliates recognition subcommittee.

Questions for the candidate[edit]

  1. ...

Mohammed Sadat Abdulai (Masssly)[edit]

I have been active on the Wikimedia projects for more than 8 years since 2011, and have been a grantee to a number of projects. I am a community leader who has led a number of Wikipedia and Wikidata workshops in my region. I'm involved in various structure groups of the Wikimedia Foundation, including the Wikimedia Foundation Board Election Committee, WikidataCon 2017 Program committee, Wikimedia Foundation Communication Committee, co-editor of the Wikimedia Research Newsletter and past member of the Wikimedia Volunteer Response Team. I've had the pleasure of working in the past as an intern with the Community Resources team of the Wikimedia Foundation, during which period I helped facilitate Wikimedia Foundations’s Funds Dissemination Committee deliberations, and supported Community Capacity Development research in emerging communities in the Global South. I'm currently a member of the leadership collective of Art+Feminism, which is an annual worldwide edit-a-thon to improve coverage of women and feminism on Wikipedia. The combined effect of these experiences has broadened my perspective of Wikipedia’s diverse demographic communities and given me a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by our volunteer community and partners. I also have a clear understanding of how the general public engage with crowdsourced projects like the Wikip[m]dia projects, and their perceptions of open-access information. In my personal life, I work as a university teacher in Ghana. I’m fluent in English, Hausa, Dagbani, and Twi; and a beginner in Arabic, French, and Mampruli. In the role of an Affiliations Committee member, I am looking for an opportunity to support the governance of the Wikimedia community’s network of affiliates across the world by contributing meaningfully to its growth, diversity, and inclusiveness.

1) How do you think affiliates work best together to partner on effective projects and initiatives?
Affiliates work best together when the entities set clear granular achievable goals that they are able to communicate to the larger Wikimedia community. There has to be a means whereby these goals are easily accessible, that way, it’s going to be easier to connect and collaborate with other entities that have similar objectives. With effective communication constantly occurring between different affiliates, there are opportunities to find a common ground where their different efforts can be streamlined to ensure the effective utilization of their resources to accomplish common tasks.
2) What do you see as the role of affiliates in the Wikimedia movement in the next three years?
I envision that Wikimedia affiliates will, in the next three (3) years, become more robust in developing protocols that govern their operations. In the next three (3) years, the affiliates would become more independent, and that would enable them to forge deeper collaborations with like-minded entities outside of the Wikimedia Foundation. We currently only see that with Chapters and Thematic bodies, but it is likely that Usergrooups would also look outside of the foundation more, in a bid to remain relevant in their regions.
3) What do you feel you will bring to the committee that makes you a uniquely qualified candidate?
  • I am passionate about the value and potential of open knowledge and Wikimedia to change the world.
  • I first gained experience around Wikimedia committees from supporting Funds Dissemination Committee deliberations when I worked at the Wikimedia Foundation.
  • I supported Community Capacity Development research in the Global South when I worked at the Wikimedia Foundation, Foundations’s Funds Dissemination Committee deliberations, and supported Community Capacity Development research in emerging communities in the Global South. This particular experience broadened my insight and gave me a clear and deeper understanding of Wikimedia’s organization in underprivileged communities.
  • My past roles as an OTRS agent particularly equipped me with excellent communications and people-relations skills across Wikimedia’s diverse demographic communities.
  • I have nurtured initiatives in my local Wikimedia community that has empowered individuals, and in the process, I have come to appreciate the nuance and complexities that underprivileged communities are fraught with when dealing with partners.
  • I am a member of the Anti Harassment working group at Art+Feminism, where we are developing a toolkit for security on Wikipedia and a protocol on how to manage harassment reports from individuals and groups participating in global editahtons.
  • As a detailed oriented person who also enjoys working with teams, I believe that I will bring a lot of valuable skills and perspectives to the Affiliations Committee.
4) Which subcommittee are you most interested in serving on?
The affiliates recognition subcommittee.

Questions for the candidate[edit]

  1. ...

Pavan Santhosh Surampudi (User:Pavan santhosh.s)[edit]

I have been contributing to contributing to Wikimedia projects since 2013 and I predominantly contributed to Telugu Wikimedia projects. I have been contributing to the larger movement in various capacities, which include, but not limited to, sysop on Telugu Wikipedia, member of Community Health Working Group of Wikimedia 2030 Movement Strategy. From December 2015 to July 2019, I was associated with CIS-A2K, Wikimedia Foundation’s movement partner in India, as a Community Advocate in staff capacity. f, a.

During my time with CIS-A2K, I worked on projects related to community building, editor retention, developing community resources, and quality improvement aspects of Telugu Wikipedia and other Telugu-language Wikimedia projects. Apart from these, I have been extensively involved in collaboratively developing annual work plans for the organisation, and also writing respective reports for the same. Some of the projects that I have been substantially involved in planning and execution in voluntary capacity are, The Wikipedia Library Conference 2019 India, Telugu Wikipedia project which improved more than 20 thousand village articles with substantial information, Telugu Wikipedia 11th Anniversary celebrations, etc., and as staff member, Train the Trainer 2019, Regional level Train the Trainer in Hyderabad, etc.,

Over all these years with Wikimedia, I have seen the affiliate structure emerging to serve the movement’s needs -- I have witnessed the strengths, complications, and failures that emerged out of the current structure, and I am very much interested to making it better.

How do you think affiliates work best together to partner on effective projects and initiatives?
In many cases, a work or say a project that an affiliate does can be very useful for an other affiliate, be it a project idea or the learning that comes from it. Documenting plays a very important role, it is important for affiliates to improve their documentation and for other affiliates to go through that documentation and adopt things from them. This will help for affiliates to manage their resources well, and also come up with innovative projects for their communities. Regularly organising regional conferences would also be a great to improve inter affiliate networks and collaborations.
What do you see as the role of affiliates in the Wikimedia movement in the next three years?
As a whole, major changes in the world, especially observing the rise of the Internet and increasing demands for distance/digital education, are making open knowledge more necessary to society. In this situation, many organisations, movements, and people are going to work with Wikimedia movement in new order that is going to happen. This positive pressure helps affiliates to gain more experience, activity, and commitment towards mission. Affiliate structures like User Groups are going to be well benefited from this scenario, if planned. They will be able to identify the right partners and collaborators at the grass root level and make use of the opportunities. By sharing their institutional knowledge across the movement, these affiliates are also going to support the movement getting into a better direction.
What do you feel you will bring to the committee that makes you uniquely qualified candidate?
I come from a community which does not have a formal affiliate, and there were times where there was a dire need to have an affiliate but it got delayed for various internal reasons. But fortunately, we are now progressively working towards it. At the same time, being a staffer of CIS-A2K I had regularly engaged with various affiliates and communities (more than 20) to say for various events, projects and community development measures for almost three years. This helped me to develop a unique experience of dealing with various situations in complex structures such as India. Also being involved with Community Health working group of Wikimedia 2030 Movement Strategy, I am well aware of the strategic direction and how that affects our movement in the long run. Since I have been both a volunteer and a professional in the Wikimedia movement, I can empathise from various perspectives towards a situation.
Which subcommittee are you most interested in serving on?
Conflict Prevention & Intervention subcommittee. However, I am flexible as needs be.

Questions for the candidate[edit]

  1. ...

Emna Mizouni (Emnamizouni)[edit]

'Asslema! I am Emna Mizouni, Username Emnamizouni, current member of the AffCom and its Vice-Chair. I am a long time proud Wikimedian, and have been actively part in the Tunisian, Arab and African communities. I am always driven by the sense of giving back to the community which keeps me fully invested in helping the users and affiliates in getting the support they need from the Affiliations Committee, connecting them and exchanging with them. During these active years in the global community, I was part of the organising team of several contests and workshops (Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves Africa, Wikip(m)edia workshops, WikiArabia(s), WikiIndaba, Wikimania...) on several capacities. Based on these experiences, my involvement in the committee grew and evolved more strategically to explore new ways of support in resolving problems as part of the conflict resolution and mediation subcommittee.

I occupied several positions as a volunteer starting from managing social media presence and media coverage to supporting organising committees of regional events and leading national projects.

As Carthagina’s Lead and Wikimedia’s member, I’m supervising a very interesting project MedinaPedia documenting monuments of the old cities of Tunisia (on Wikipedia and Wikimedia commons), other Arab cities. Other projects include organising editathons to add and fix content about Tunisian women in different fields such as Journalism and Media. I am glad I was able to serve the African community in Wikimania Cape Town 2018 as one of the three program co-chairs.

I’ve been part of the AffCom for two mandates during which I was in constant contact with different affiliates either in my role as a committee member or Vice- Chair. I am running again for this term to make sure that I am fully engaged in shaping the committee during the strategy process and that the committee's work is presented in a great way that would support the affiliates while doing their amazing job to have a better understanding of the affiliates system. I really enjoy being of help to the other members of the global community and especially collaborating with them to be compliant to do efficiently their duties.

How do you think affiliates work best together to partner on effective projects and initiatives?

When there is a common vision, affiliates could come together and partner through their members when they get together in the different Wikimedia occasions and spot the common points and grab those opportunities. Based on my experience and the work I’ve been part of in the Tunisian Affiliate; partnership is key of success between the Wikimedia community in Tunisia and its partners like Carthagina, CLibre, etc. We were also able to partner with the journalists union for the Women Journalists editathon for example. This is an example from a local partnership, however at a broader level there are more examples that are successful. Maintaining a healthy community in addition to Transparency and good governance to effectively run projects and initiatives under the partnership.

What do you see as the role of affiliates in the Wikimedia movement in the next three years?

Affiliates are playing a major role in our movement, they lead the community work and contribute in the movement’s impact globally. More guidance should be provided to them as well as resources.

What do you feel you will bring to the committee that makes you a uniquely qualified candidate?

As I am running for the third and last time, I am confident I will carry on the work started and commit to help my teammates in taking the AffCom to the next level as our movement advances then adopts its strategy.

Which subcommittee are you most interested in serving on?

I want to serve more the User Groups subcommittee in addition to occasional help to the Conflict and resolution one.

Questions for the candidate[edit]

  1. ...

Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight (User:Rosiestep)[edit]

Hello, everyone. I'm Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight from California. I started editing en.wiki in 2007 and became an admin in 2009. Since then, I written a lot of articles. In 2014, I established WikiProject Women Writers. In 2015, I co-founded Women in Red and WikiWomen's User Group. Later that year, I was named Volunteer of the Year by Wikimedia District of Columbia. In 2016, I became a member of the Affiliates Commitee (secretary 2017-2019). I co-founded WikiConference North America User Group, and was honored to be named en:Wikimedian of the Year along with Emily Temple-Wood. In 2017, for three months, I was a part-time WMF contractor on the Wikimedia Foundation's Gender Diversity Mapping project. Since 2017, I have been the Wikipedia Visiting Scholar at Northeastern University, Digital Scholarship Group, Women Writers Project. In 2018, I was knighted by Serbia, in part because of my work within the Wikimedia movement. I currently serve as vice-president of Wikimedia D.C. I was a member of the movement strategy Community Health Working Group. I have served on the Scholarship Committee for: Wikimania (2017, 2018, 2019), WikiConference North America (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019), and WikiConference USA (2016). I've been a member of the Safe Space Team at: Wikidatacon (2017), Wiki CEEM (2019), and WikiConference North America (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019). I have also served on the Discussion Room Committee for Wikimania (2016); Program Committee for Wikimedia Diversity Conference (2017); Editorial Board, Human Resources Manager, "The Signpost" (2015); Start-up team at the Teahouse (2012). I attended Wikimedia Conference/Summit in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019. With the exception of my part-time contractor position, everything else I do in the wiki movement is as a volunteer.

I earned Bachelors and Master's degrees in business. My Master's thesis centered on developing a strategic I.T. plan for a non-profit. After a long career, I retired in 2016, having spent years managing government contracts and human resources. My business skills have helped me in my Wikiproject and Affiliates work in areas such as recruitment, conflict resolution, consensus-building, branding, metrics, record-keeping, and so forth.

My motivation for seeking another term on the committee is simple: I want to do my part in helping the Affiliates movement prosper as we enter a new decade focused on the 2030 strategic direction.

1) How do you think affiliates work best together to partner on effective projects and initiatives?

I think affiliates work best when they are good communicators, and when they diversify their objectives. Nothing will work well if the members of an affiliate are poor communicators. Diversifying an affiliate's objectives makes good business sense: if one project or initiative doesn't move forward in a given year, perhaps another one will. Collaboration across affiliates can lead to new partnerships and cross-pollination of ideas/processes.

2) What do you see as the role of affiliates in the Wikimedia movement in the next three years?

Affiliates are pillars and evangelists within the Wikimedia movement. As long as the final movement strategy recommendations include roles and responsibilities for affiliates, I believe they will continue to function as pillars -facilitators of wiki work within geographic and thematic communities worldwide- and evangelists -training, explaining, recruiting- within their spheres of influence.

3) What do you feel you will bring to the committee that makes you a uniquely qualified candidate?

There are several things I can bring to the committee, including business education/experience/abilities/skills/knowledge and diversity (I'm a grandmother, in my 60s). I'm a polyglot (Serbian is my first language, then English, Spanish, French). I have several years of experience as an active member of the affiliates movement. That said, there is so much I don't know, and I am eager to learn new things from those I meet within the movement.

4) Which subcommittee are you most interested in serving on?

I'd like to continue to be a member of the Conflict Prevention & Intervention subcommittee.

Questions for the candidate[edit]

  1. Thanks Rosie for your service and your candidacy. From your statement I understand that you currently work for the Wikimedia Foundation. I'm not certain though, because the phrasing could be interpreted in multiple ways, and I wasn't able to quickly resolve this question on your user page either. If that reading is correct though, could you elaborate a little on your position? Could you also outline the different roles you currently fill (or plan to fill in the near future) and how you deal with potential (perceived or real) conflicts of interest - especially with regards to your role at the Foundation? Thank you. Effeietsanders (talk) 08:29, 24 January 2020 (UTC)

Olaniyan Ishola Olushola (User:Olaniyan Olushola)[edit]

I am Olaniyan Ishola Olushola , a Nigerian social entrepreneur, financial counsultant and a women’s advocate. I co-founded the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria and the current president of the group. I am the co-producer of Wiki Women Radio program, a weekly program run in partnership with WFM91.7 poised to promote Nigerian women within Africa and in Diaspora.

In 2017, I partook in the direction of the Wikpedia Campaign in Nigeria sponsored by WMF, the campaign featured the blend of old and young Nigerian artists such as Peter Edochie-Okwonkwo and Emmanuela. After three month of release of the video it was viewed by over 17millions viewers on Youtube and various social media platforms across the globe. Later in the year 2018, the video was nominated as the best video for the year 2018 by African Excellence Award, Dublin, Republic of Ireland.

I joined Wikimedia community in 2014 and I remain an active contributor on English and Yoruba Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, Meta-Wiki, Wiki data, and Outreach Wikipedia and other related projects. Within a spate of 3 years as the Head of Wikimedia User Group Nigeria, We have partnered with over 30 NGOs, tertiary institutions and governmental agencies on the application of Wikipedia to promote digital inclusion .

I led the Nigerian team working with Wikitongue ( an NGO based in the US) in partnership with some relevant institutions in Nigeria on digitisation of over 495 oral and signed indigenous languages in Nigeria. In 2018, the team worked with Nigerian Tourism development Corporation on digitization of tourist attraction points in Nigeria as a way of giving visibility to Nigeria tourist sites attraction on Wikipedia. The project released over 1000 images under open licenses for research and educational purposes.

I started the initiative: Wiki-Fan club in Nigeria. The project was designed to train and recruit Nigerian students to join Wikimedia community in Nigeria. As of today, over 7 tertiary institutors have joined the project namely: Lagos state University, University of Ibadan, University of Ilorin, Ekiti State University, University of Nigerian, Nsuka, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta and Nigerian Institute of Journalism a. I am working with African women in the Media (AWIM) on Project Visibility. The project is in collaboration with leaders in African journalism with the aim of improving the visibility of African women on the global digital space.

I’ve participated in many regional and international conferences, starting from 2014: I participated in the first Wiki Indaba, a regional conference for Africa Wikimedia in Johannesburg South Africa. I've co-organized, Black History editathon (conceptualized by Afro crowd), Wiki Loves Women ( Wiki Loves Africa), Wiki Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Monuments and many more.

1) How do you think affiliates work best together to partner on effective projects and initiatives?
  1. i think In order to enjoy an effective working relationship among affiliates, each group needs to design a clear and concise community engagement plans that will address the needs, challenges and procedural approach of projects and initiatives that will be brought to the table for every engagement and collaboration. This approach will promote goal congruence among the affiliates in the movement.
2) What do you see as the role of affiliates in the Wikimedia movement in the next three years?
The affiliate should serve the following purposes:
  1. Platform for the promotion and actualization of the proposed recommendations by the various working groups for the Wikimedia Strategy 2020.
  2. Connecting rod for bridging the space between outsiders with requisite skills needed for the growth of our community and the Wikimedia community
3) What do you feel you will bring to the committee that makes you a uniquely qualified candidate?
  1. I joined the Wikimedia community over 5years ago, so I have garnered experience about the movement which can deployed in the committee engagement.
  2. As a member of the movement from Africa, my participation will bring diversity to the committee.
  3. I am a graduate of 20 years of experience in the business world. And i see my skill set very helpful in conflict resolution and partnership among affiliates.
  4. I am a social media enthusiast. I administrate all the social media handles for Wikimedia User Group Nigera
4) Which subcommittee are you most interested in serving on?

I'will be glad to work with Conflict Prevention & Intervention subcommittee.

Questions for the candidate[edit]

  1. ...

Rajeeb Dutta (User:Marajozkee)[edit]

I am Rajeeb Dutta, a passionate Wikimedian from India since 2017, “Marajozkee” is my Wikimedia username, though one can find me editing with my first name “Rajeeb” as well, I founded Wiki Pathshala, (Wiki Learning Club) recently, though I have been contributing to Bengali, English and Hindi Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, Meta and Wikimedia Outreach projects since almost last three years. I have more than 17,000 edits, over 2000 photos and over 300 articles on my name.

From day one and even today I feel I should have joined Wikimedia movement many years before as I was using Wikipedia more than a decade and never thought I can edit it too, my late involvement persuaded me to know more about this noble movement and I was lucky enough to been in touch with affiliate representatives, FDC and AffCom members, WMF staffs and Wiki(p)medians across the globe. The encouragement led me devote more time for the Wikimedia family rather than my own family. I have been labelled by my family, as "I eat, sleep and breathe Wikipedia".

I participated in Local offline & online meet-ups, National Edit-a-thon & International edit-a-thon (won prizes as well), National Workshops, Wiki Walks documenting Heritage sites and cemeteries([5]), Local conferences and one International conference (GLAMTLV2018) as well, its been a great learning process and those experiences helped me to perform various tasks related to community building. These includes organizing & conducting online & offline Wiki events, viz., International meet-up (India & Russian Wikimedians at St.Petersburg, 2018), Local meet-up, workshops for new Wikipedians, training Wikipedians, recruitment of volunteers etc., Organizing team member of various National and International Wikimedia projects like, (Wiki Loves Monuments 2018 in India, Wiki Women for Women Wellbeing Workshop - Kolkata, SVG Translation Campaign 2019 in India, Wiki Loves Love 2019, Wiki Loves Africa 2019,Interwiki Women Collaboration) as an Organizer, Outreach coordinator and mentor for Wiki Projects like (WikiGap 2019, Kolkata, India, 1lib1ref Kolkata May 2019, Wiki Loves Cricket World Cup 2019, founded a Wiki Learning Club, Wiki Pathshala and regards to social media presence, I have a Facebook Group Bengal Knowledge Hub by which I post on daily basis about updates happening in the movement. I believe I’ve gained a good understanding of the Wikimedia movement thanks to my involvement in the local activities and activities that are international in scope as well.

I understand that the committee's (almost 14 years) main responsibility is to provide guidance to Volunteers around the world in establishing Wikimedia Chapters, Thematic Organizations, and User Groups, and I feel that I have the education, experience, abilities, skills and knowledge to do justice to the job and can be a voice of Global South. I earned Bachelors in English (Major) and Master's degrees in CRM (Customer Relationship Management) which helps me to understand, create and maintain relationships in the movement. I being a member of Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group, I am always willing to engage with everything that helps to bring more diverse people to our movement, I am also working in social issues oriented Wiki Projects like #WikiForHumanRights and Wikimedians for Sustainable Development. I am very flexible and always looking to learn and grow facing every new challenge and any new role which I would like to do. With various levels of proficiency, I'm a polyglot (English, Bangla, Hindi). Somehow, my deep interest in Wikimedia Projects and my contribution in it excites me to be the part of Affiliations Committee. Thanks for your consideration.

1) How do you think affiliates work best together to partner on effective projects and initiatives?

I believe that affiliates work best together when they started interacting and know each other. We are lucky that Affiliates have quite active wikip(m)edians as members with diverse experience from around the globe that's makes a better understanding to take effective decisions on recommendations. I would like to see affiliates collaborating with each other as partnership is key to success, one should maintain transparency and follow ethics & policies.

2) What do you see as the role of affiliates in the Wikimedia movement in the next three years?

In the next three years, since the changes in the movement have begun, AffCom will play a key role in building the capacity of the Wikimedia movement. I expect mutual interactions and collaborations between Affiliates under the guidance of AffCom. Affiliates will be growing not just in numbers also in sizes, there will be more cross-border and cross-regional interactions between Affiliates, keeping in vision 2030 movement strategy.

3) What do you feel you will bring to the committee that makes you a uniquely qualified candidate?

I have experience with volunteer engagement and community building. Being a member of the AffCom would allow me to further engage with various affiliates and volunteers from the wider Wikimedia movement. I have always striven to be a team player, an effective communicator and though I’m not perfect, still I believe my skills will be beneficial to the Committee’s further development. I am very keen to join the committee, as coming from Global South, I believe that I can contribute not only with my experience and expertise but with my vision of a world where knowledge will be free and open for everyone.

4) Which subcommittee are you most interested in serving on?

Affiliate Recognitions subcommittee. However, I am flexible as needs be.

Questions for the candidate[edit]

Derick Alangi (User:X-Savitar)[edit]

  1. Full name: Derick N Alangi and Wikimedia username: X-Savitar.
  2. I'm a Software Engineer by profession, holder of a Bachelor in Engineering (B.Eng) and a Wikimedia volunteer developer for over 4yrs now. I'm mostly skilled around technical stuff (like software engineering, programming and building software based applications), community engagement and capacity building. I'm also a current AffCom member and wish to keep pushing affiliates agenda. My motivation for re-joining the committee is to work with other communities still growing and joining the Wikimedia global movement to become affiliates with the Wikimedia Foundation. Some of these communities don't know how to get around being affiliates, so my focus will mostly bringing them knowledge and drilling them how to become one. For more information about me, you can view my user page.
  3. Answers below;
  1. I think the best way so far is communicating with others on the project and/or initiative to gain common grounds on how it can be executed in favor of all parties. When this is done and all properties of the project and initiative put in place, then the project will be a success when smart work is put in, in order to accomplish the project.
  2. Affiliates in the next 3 years will be the main building blocks of the global Wikimedia movement. As these communities harness the power of bringing together volunteers from various perspectives together in a very flexible manner and hence growing the Wikimedia movement at large.
  3. What I have unique is my communication power and charm to tap into emerging communities, help them to see the light (vision of Wikimedia) while showing them the path of how to become affiliates to support the global Wikimedia community to reach our vision within the shortest possible time, hence making the world even a better place to be (ideally). In addition, from a science background, I've the unique property of using logic to make decisions which will improve on the decision making process of selecting communities to Wikimedia affiliates.

Questions for the candidate[edit]

  1. ...

Josh Lim (Sky Harbor)[edit]

Hello, everyone. My name is Josh Lim, and I'm applying to (re)join the Affiliations Committee as a member. Maraming salamat po sa inyong paglaan ng oras sa inyong pagbasa ng aking aplikasyon. (Thank you very much for taking the time to read my application.)

I've been a Wikipedian since 2005, editing under the username Sky Harbor. With over 25,000 edits since I first started editing, as an editor I am primarily active on the English and Tagalog Wikipedias, where I also hold admin rights (as an administrator and bureaucrat, respectively), with smaller numbers of edits on the Spanish, Polish and Chinese Wikipedias. I've also contributed to Commons, Wiktionary, Wikibooks and Wikivoyage.

In the greater Wikimedia movement, I served in various capacities in the former Wikimedia Philippines, where I played key roles in building capacity, movement awareness and strong institutional partnerships through our various projects and programs — something we've continued with the Wiki Society of the Philippines, WMPH's successor organization, where we're currently pursuing innovative projects surrounding cultural heritage, combatting disinformation and fake news, and building the Wikimedia movement's local reputation. My activities were not limited to the Philippines: I also strongly pushed for pan-Asian cooperation within the Wikimedia movement, which ultimately led to the Wikimedia Asia Project and ESEAP Hub initiatives, as well as the Wikipedia Asian Month project. More notably, I also previously ran for the WMF Board of Trustees in 2015, where I was the highest-ranking candidate from a developing country, and led the Manila bid for Wikimania 2016. In addition to my work in the Philippines, I'm currently a member of the Wikimedians of Los Angeles user group, and I also use my expertise to help build the movement in North America, as well as building tools like Cite Unseen, which ultimately parlayed into securing funding for a successful WikiConference North America 2019.

Critical to this application was my previous tenure on the Affiliations Committee, where I served between 2013 and 2016. During my time on the Affiliations Committee, I had played a critical role in helping support movement affiliates in Asia and in the developing world more widely, ensuring that new affiliates got the support they get, as well as having a sound ear they can talk to. I've visited affiliates throughout the world during my time on the Committee, and I've become well informed of the challenges the movement faces in various parts of the world. That said, perhaps my greatest achievement while on the Committee — though I must stress that this was a team effort and I can't claim credit for it alone — was finally getting a Brazilian user group off the ground after years of false starts and missteps, helping overcome significant doubt between various factions of Wikimedians in that country. I've worked with many of the current and previous members of the Affiliations Committee in various capacities, and I look forward to being a reliable partner once again.

In my personal life, I currently live in Los Angeles, where I work for DeviantArt, the art website, as its Community Campaign Manager. In that role, I organize events and initiatives for the community at large while also building the community as a place for artists to be, both as themselves and through their art, while also pushing for greater growth in our capacity to internationalize our brand and activities. I've parlayed the skill set I've developed as a Wikimedian into various community management roles throughout the last decade, and as such I have extensive experience working with communities both on- and off-Wikimedia, in both paid and volunteer capacities, and in both business and consumer settings. My very long history as a Wikimedia volunteer informs my professional work and vice-versa, and I strongly believe that our communities have much to learn from one another: things I hope to bring into the Committee should I get to return for a second time.

I'm applying to rejoin the Affiliations Committee because I strongly believe that it can benefit from having someone with not just deep movement experience, but also a depth and breadth of knowledge relevant to its activities that may not necessarily be available within the movement alone. I certainly hope my years dealing with affiliates, growing them, bridging disagreements and building on the good will of our movement will prove to be beneficial to the Committee as it continues to do the good work it needs to do to ensure the continued long-term survival of our affiliates as effective stewards of the Wikimedia movement. Furthermore, as someone who views serving on Wikimedia committees as akin to civic duty, where I know I have a responsibility to the various stakeholders of our movement, I am aware of the responsibility that comes with Committee membership, and I hope to use what I've learned in my many years as a Wikimedian and as a community professional to further enhance the capacity of the Affiliations Committee to do the work it needs to do in order to advance our movement.

Answers to questions
  1. How do you think affiliates work best together to partner on effective projects and initiatives?
Affiliates are best capable of working together when they are informed not just by shared movement goals, but also by shared experiences. I've long been a proponent of exchanges that help facilitate the exchange of knowledge and expertise between affiliates, which not only help build mutual trust but also a shared understanding that the projects we implement, in their own ways, help advance the movement. Diversity of ideas is strongly important to ensuring the long-term success of our affiliates, and we need to be able to empower them to not just make those ideas, but also to act on them. I also strongly believe that affiliates need to be empowered to articulate common interests, brought on by an ability not only to clearly define their own positions on issues within the movement as viewed by their own community, but also to better bridge those interests with other affiliates so they can work on movement programs, issues and objectives of common concern.
  2. What do you see as the role of affiliates in the Wikimedia movement in the next three years?
I see affiliates in the next three years as not just being stewards of the movement, but as being uniquely positioned to further ground the aims of the Wikimedia movement into concrete goals that are actionable and impactful. Affiliates are in a unique position to advance the movement in ways individual editors nor the Foundation can't on their own, and so I see the role of affiliates as being grounders of our ideas — the strategy process, our movement principles, etc. — into actions that take into account the national, social and cultural contexts of where affiliates lie. Conversely, affiliates represent a huge chunk of our diversity as a movement, and so they also play a role in bridging the disparate parts of our movement — particularly as we move towards a more shared understanding of how the movement ought to achieve its objectives — so that we can all learn from one another.
  3. What do you feel you will bring to the committee that makes you a uniquely qualified candidate?
Serving on the Affiliations Committee is a privilege but also an immense responsibility, and I strongly believe that we need skilled Wikimedians on the Committee who are informed by experience and possess the relevant expertise to be effective stewards of the Committee's many duties. With a decade of experience working in the Wikimedia movement spanning over three continents (Asia, Europe and North America) under my belt, the ability to speak eight languages critical to our movement (English, Tagalog/Filipino, Spanish, Polish, Chinese, some French, some Hebrew and basic Japanese), having previous experience on the Affiliations Committee and, critically, having run affiliates myself — including experiencing the de-recognition process first-hand, which is important to understanding the life cycle of our affiliates — I strongly believe I have the credentials, skill, expertise and experience required to grow our affiliates and to shepherd our movement towards the future: a future informed not just by the 2030 strategy process, but also by a deeper understanding between our movement and those like us to which we have so much to learn from, as much as they have to learn from us.
  4. Which subcommittee are you most interested in serving on?
I'm definitely interested in serving on the Conflict Prevention and Intervention subcommittee, but I'm open to serving on either subcommittee, or in any other role as required.

Questions for the candidate[edit]

  1. Hello, Sky Harbor. Thanks for your service and for your decision to present yourself to community scrutiny for a position at the Affiliations Committee. I was surprised by your comment about Brazil: could you please specify what you mean by "getting a Brazilian user group off the ground after years of false starts and missteps, helping overcome significant doubt between various factions of Wikimedians in that country"? What does "getting a group off the ground" mean? Could you specify what you mean by "years of false starts and missteps"? To what "significant doubt" are you referring to? As much as I enjoy global connectivity, my sense is our community got much better when we stopped being an artifact of foreign interference and experimentation: do you disagree with this opinion? Thanks. --Joalpe (talk) 12:38, 26 January 2020 (UTC)

@Sky Harbor: I am also curious to know why you mentioned your acting in Brazil as a case of success, when everybody knows it was a show case of a disaster until very recently - mainly, IMO, due to WMF and AffCom perverse and deleterious interference: the former with the disgraceful Catalyzer program, which lasted until 2014, and the second with the blank approval one year later of a spinn-off of that catalyzer program, led by a former WMF contractor, and dressed up as a UG affiliate which coincided in everything with the one already existing in Brazil, despite the very vocal opposition of the existing community; and to top their misdeed, AffCom "solved" the problem they created themselves by killing both affiliates, both the old, historical Brazilian affiliate, and the catalyzer spin-off which they instated in Brazil in the full knowledge they were already in conflict with the existing community. IMO all AffCom acting on Brazil between 2013 and 2018 is a reason for shame and regret for AffCom and its members, not for pride, and it's quite surprising you had come here presenting that as a case of success. Can you please explain what is your vision of that case?--- Darwin Ahoy! 15:47, 26 January 2020 (UTC)

Farah Jack Mustaklem (User:Fjmustak)[edit]

My name is Farah, and I'm running for re-election to AffCom. I'm a software engineer from Palestine, and I've been editing Wikipedia since 2005. The bulk of my edits have been to the Arabic and English Wikipedias, as well as uploads to Commons. I'm one of the founding members of the Wikimedians of the Levant User Group, and currently serve as the treasurer thereof.

I have a bachelors degree in mathematics and a masters of business administration. I'm bilingual in English and Arabic, and have varying degrees of understanding of French, Hebrew, Spanish, and Dutch.

I would like to continue to serve on the Affiliations Committee to help maintain the affiliate ecosystem, which is a vital part of the Wikimedia Movement.

1) How do you think affiliates work best together to partner on effective projects and initiatives?

Affiliates work best together when they have common goals. Different affiliates with similar projects or activities can learn from one another's successes and failures, and can collaborate. This is most effective when there is no conflict among the affiliates.

2) What do you see as the role of affiliates in the Wikimedia movement in the next three years?

I see that the main role of the affiliates is to organize communities (online or offline), and to increase the base of contributors to the Wikiemedia projects.

3) What do you feel you will bring to the committee that makes you a uniquely qualified candidate?

I will bring to the committee my good relationships with members of affiliates and problem solving skills in case they are needed.

4) Which subcommittee are you most interested in serving on?

I'd like to serve on the Conflict Prevention & Intervention subcommittee.
