Stewards/Confirm/2017

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Translate this page at Template:Steward confirmations.

Warning

The 2017 steward elections are finished. No further votes will be accepted.

The 2017-18 Confirmation will begin on 8 February, and will finish on 28 February.

The 2017-18 Steward Confirmations are an opportunity for the Wikimedia community to comment on the performance of existing stewards. To make the process as smooth as possible, the confirmations are organized as follows.

To comment, please log in with an account that has edits (on any wiki) before 8 February. During the 2017 Elections, please mention if you are comfortable or unhappy with the use of steward tools of any of the people listed below and why.

After the election, stewards (including the newly-elected ones) are invited to review the confirmation comments and to give their impression of the outcome (consensus to confirm/remove etc.) on Talk:Stewards/Confirm/2017 for every steward who stood for confirmation. Of course, they are not required to do this for every candidate and will be especially careful to do it regarding someone about whom they expressed strong opinions in the confirmation. Non-steward comments are welcome outside of the "Final Decision" section, subject to the usual expectations of civility. Confirmation discussions will last one week after the appointment of the newly elected stewards. This may be extended to two weeks for one or more confirmations at the discretion of the Election Committee if the committee believes further input is required before concluding. The Election Committee will close these discussions and implement the outcome (which also means making a decision in non-obvious cases).

All stewards elected before February 2017 will undergo this process.

  • Personal info: Hello everyone. I've been a steward for three years now, and with your permission I would like to continue in that role for another year. I've maintained a reasonable level of activity since being elected, and you can view a breakdown of my activity this year at this page. Most of my work in this role deals with responding to cross-wiki abuse, assigning local permissions through Meta-Wiki, and participating in discussions with the group as a whole. If confirmed, I will continue to be active in these areas. Outside of the steward role, I am still an active member of the Wikidata community, and I occasionally write some articles on the English Wikipedia. As always, if you have any questions, I would be glad to answer them. Thanks, – Ajraddatz (talk) 07:18, 27 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Personal info: As per previous years, I would like to express my gratitude for the community's continued trust in my contributions, and I would like to continue in this role for the upcoming year. While not the most active steward, I believe I contribute value in almost all steward areas, especially in discussions and decisions which may not always be visible on-wiki due to privacy issues. While I have reduced my Wikimedia-wide activities this past year (having voluntarily relinquished Oversight on the Commons) I think that the experience I bring from various janitorial positions across the projects will continue to help the corpus of Stewards in the coming year. • Personal info: Hello all! It's been a great time since I've been made a steward back in 2011. I've since then been usually around. In the past year, I suffered from serious health issues from which I currently try to recover. That is the reason why I was not really active in the last term. I'm currently not sure how much my activity levels will rise. I already dropped a few rights in November last year and I guess it's simply about time to also drop my steward rights. I really enjoyed the time and I'd certainly love to keep my rights, but I'm currently not really helpful and have no clue when I will be able to return to some more stable activity. After thinking a long time about it, I decided to not seek confirmation this year. I will, however, try to stick around. -Barras talk 13:27, 30 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Although I haven't been active as I used to be, I am still around to deal with people who use the wiki to vandalize, spam, and the other kinds of abuse. I look forward to working with the current and future stewards this year.

  • Personal info: It feels a bit strange to look at Stewards and realize that you are now the oldest still active steward since M7 left close to his tenth anniversary. Although I usually only have little free time left after mostly very long working days (at Wikimedia Deutschland), I still try to be as present as possible as a steward, be it onwiki or in chats, and try to help wherever I can (for example, once again in the Election Committee). In particular that means to be available on IRC (also to restart bots which I co-maintain on ToolLabs), on the mailing lists, and on OTRS or Skype, where users who were affected by some of my global range blocks ask for support. Most of these blocks are caused by a long-term troll that I've grown to handle well, which also explains my high and constant activity on loginwiki and the huge amount of accounts I've locked.

Unfortunately, I'm not as active anymore in cross-wiki vandal fighting on smaller wikis or handling global rename requests (in fact, I stopped the latter after I spent much time helping to establish it), but I'm still happy that the SUL finalization, realized collaboratively with the Wikimedia Foundation, continues to make new tools possible and our work more effective. My good connection to the Wikimedia Foundation is, so I like to think, in many ways quite valuable to the steward group. Therefore I try to attend as many monthly calls with the Foundation as possible, where I contribute my experience, mainly on the topic of global bans with which I became quite experienced in the last couple of months. Some of the banned users also directly attacked me and have even denounced me to my former employee. I find it highly important that we convey very clearly, that vandalism and personal attacks are unacceptable. I also gave a presentation on that topic at the German WikiCon (German slides), as well as a presentation introducing metawiki to the broader German community (German slides), as I also understand the steward role as a bridge between the local and global communities.

I want to continue serving to the same extent, helping my dear fellows as well as my local community with global matters, and would be very glad to celebrate my tenth anniversary as a steward this December. Thanks for your patience, and please feel free to ask questions.

  • Personal info: Hello everyone, I have been serving as steward for three years by now. I have helped out in various areas, often with a technical focus during these three years.

I have been a Wikimedian since 2008, active in the Small Wiki Monitoring Team since 2010 and have been global rollbacker and a global administrator until I got elected as a steward in early 2014. Furthermore I'm an administrator on Wikidata and casually active on various other projects.

Nowadays I volunteer by helping to maintain MediaWiki extensions related to global administration and steward tasks, also I have access to the Wikimedia foundation's servers which I also occasionally use to support steward actions. Besides, I'm working as a Wikidata developer for Wikimedia Germany.

In the upcoming year, I plan to continue working on incoming requests and by supporting my fellow stewards with technical matters as needed. - Hoo man (talk) 21:45, 2 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Personal info: Hello. Over the last year, I have continued to work the areas where I've traditionally been active in the global community, such as renames and SRP. I also helped out in a modest extent with global locks and checkuser, which are areas I would like to expand upon in the coming year. And I've remained active with my home project as an administrator and oversighter.

One aspirational goal I have is to work to find a way to better coordinate local project activities with global functions. For example, a number of local projects are very good with identifying abusive usernames and sockpuppetry, but there remains a gap between the local blocking of those accounts and a global response (e.g., identifying if the locally-blocked sock is doing similarly problematic conduct on other projects). I don't have a good answer to this problem (and it is a problem that stewards cannot, and should not, solve on their own), but I hope to work with others on it.

I recognize that I am not the most active or technically-savvy steward, but I believe I can still assist with steward duties. I think that one of the positive attributes I bring to the role is a willingness to listen to feedback from others and learn new tasks. Please feel free to approach me here or on my talk page with any questions or concerns you may have. Thank you. MBisanz talk 20:18, 15 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Hello all,

This year I have continued been active in the areas I used to be active as well in the past, focusing on on-wiki steward requests of all kinds such as permissions or counter vandalism and/or spam activities. I have also given a hand on global rename requests and have patrolled the edit filter logs to detect and stop the recurring spam bots that try to damage our sites inserting spam across the projects, which is a very time-consuming activity and for which there is not a technical solution to prevent them from even attempting to spam yet, but to set, watch and fine tune edit filters and spam blacklist rules.

I have also tried to provide support to the communities when requested and have continued providing minor technical support to them when requested by them as well. A general overview of my on-wiki steward activity can be seen in my personal log. I have also participated on mailing lists and on-wiki discussions as well.

I still feel I can give a hand in the steward duties and therefore I would like to ask for your support for another term.

Last year, I had health issues in September-October, and once I'd gotten better, I was too busy with real life commitments that had been delayed. I was originally not planning to ask for confirmation (hence the late submission of the statement), but I think that I can be more useful this year, barring any exceptional circumstances. I don't expect to be the most active steward, but I will try to help out whenever I can, and definitely more than I did last year. At the moment, I only have admin rights in one project, so the majority of my time on Wikimedia projects can be dedicated to steward work. If I cannot maintain activity this year, I'll definitely not be asking for a further extension. I mainly work on handling spambots and LTAs, via global (b)locking and CU on login.wiki. I would like to continue helping in these areas if the community is willing to reconfirm me. --Pmlineditor (t · c · l) 18:13, 6 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Due to personal circumstances (such as accepting a full-time job and the loss of two dear family members) I wasn't as active as steward as I sometimes wished. Therefore I thought a lot about whether I want to continue with this volunteer work in 2017, since the situation in my private life hasn't changed that much. But I decided to give it a shot and continue for one more year. I care about the wikis too much and I believe I'm still active enough. Plus as a steward I also believe I provide valuable insights, at least to some.

What I do: work involving right changes, cross-wiki vandalism, sockpuppetry and spam. I'm an admin on three major wikis, a CU on two and I'm an OTRS agent. I'm far from perfect, which means I'm always open for feedback. Since Shanel left us in 2012 I'm the only female steward, though perhaps it's now the last time I have to say this.

  • Personal info: Each year I try to write down a yearly balance of stewards' activity/my own activity. I'll start with cons: this year we lost/we are about to lose some important fellow steward. This brought (IMHO) to weakening our ability to work as a team. And, as a consequence, to react to non-ordinary challenges we have to face. Also, we still lacks of some technical instrument like better ways to handle spam or the ability to whitelist IPs caught in global blocks (this will truly reduce my personal workload). As pros: I don't know if it was a consequence of global renaming requests or wikidata moving a large number of users to global projects but I feel like the overall wiki* community is getting more and more aware of global roles/issues/activities. Also, I think we are reacting in the right way to an Internet which is moving to mobile platforms though this still is a challenge. This year I was able to have a fair level of timely responses though I hope I'll be able to find a way to improve block messages using ad hoc localized templates. I seek confirmation because I think I can still be somehow useful to the project(s), I use to give precedence to substance over form, though I accept recalls to do not completely ignore the first one. I just hope we will have the strength and commitment to accept new challenges without ignoring them. My main working areas will remain lta "management", open proxies/botnets detection and checkusering.
