Stewards (2017 Confirmations)

The 2017-18 Confirmation will begin on 8 February, and will finish on 28 February.

The 2017-18 Steward Confirmations are an opportunity for the Wikimedia community to comment on the performance of existing stewards. To make the process as smooth as possible, the confirmations are organized as follows.

To comment, please log in with an account that has edits (on any wiki) before 8 February. During the 2017 Elections, please mention if you are comfortable or unhappy with the use of steward tools of any of the people listed below and why.

After the election, stewards (including the newly-elected ones) are invited to review the confirmation comments and to give their impression of the outcome (consensus to confirm/remove etc.) on Talk:Stewards/Confirm/2017 for every steward who stood for confirmation. Of course, they are not required to do this for every candidate and will be especially careful to do it regarding someone about whom they expressed strong opinions in the confirmation. Non-steward comments are welcome outside of the "Final Decision" section, subject to the usual expectations of civility. Confirmation discussions will last one week after the appointment of the newly elected stewards. This may be extended to two weeks for one or more confirmations at the discretion of the Election Committee if the committee believes further input is required before concluding. The Election Committee will close these discussions and implement the outcome (which also means making a decision in non-obvious cases).

All stewards elected before February 2017 will undergo this process.

  • Personal info: Hello everyone. I've been a steward for three years now, and with your permission I would like to continue in that role for another year. I've maintained a reasonable level of activity since being elected, and you can view a breakdown of my activity this year at this page. Most of my work in this role deals with responding to cross-wiki abuse, assigning local permissions through Meta-Wiki, and participating in discussions with the group as a whole. If confirmed, I will continue to be active in these areas. Outside of the steward role, I am still an active member of the Wikidata community, and I occasionally write some articles on the English Wikipedia. As always, if you have any questions, I would be glad to answer them. Thanks, – Ajraddatz (talk) 07:18, 27 January 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Personal info: As per previous years, I would like to express my gratitude for the community's continued trust in my contributions, and I would like to continue in this role for the upcoming year. While not the most active steward, I believe I contribute value in almost all steward areas, especially in discussions and decisions which may not always be visible on-wiki due to privacy issues. While I have reduced my Wikimedia-wide activities this past year (having voluntarily relinquished Oversight on the Commons) I think that the experience I bring from various janitorial positions across the projects will continue to help the corpus of Stewards in the coming year. Thank you. -- Avi (talk) 16:30, 16 January 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Remove Remove 11/12 months with less than 5 steward actions and 4/12 months with 0 actions do not leave much of a basis for prolonged access. Little visible use of access has been criticised by many in the past years as well and now claiming to have reduced Wikimedia-wide activity even more does not look promising at all. And I don't agree with the argument about his contributions "behind the scenes". I didn't remember anything interesting from the past year, so I now searched my mail archive, and sorry to say, but I found no valauble contributions to difficult "discussions and decisions". --MF-W 17:08, 12 February 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • I'm still neutral on this for now, but I don't think that Avraham is very active in our internal discussions. He has made it to a couple of the calls, but there is almost no activity on the list - especially on the difficult cases where his input could really be valuable. – Ajraddatz (talk) 22:05, 12 February 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • @MF-Warburg and Ajraddatz: Avraham has no global rename rights. If he loses steward rights, then he can't rename anyone anymore. Besides that, he also used the steward rights for 2 CU cases in April ("second opinion") and in Decembre and did a lot of other right changes (see Special:Log/rights/Avraham) which he all can't do anymore without steward rights. Then other stewards certainly have to do more. I don't see a logical reason for that, if he does things well, and there is noone doubting that. I don't see another reason for removing here but only "inactivity", but he's not that inactive. --Bjarlin (talk) 13:45, 17 February 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
      • As I said, I'm neutral on this request. I generally don't agree with inactivity as a valid rationale for removal, without some indication that such inactivity is causing errors. Or if the person is totally not here anymore. – Ajraddatz (talk) 19:38, 17 February 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Keep Keep While Avraham's activity levels are never particularly high, I've always noticed that he brings a different perspective to most steward issues, and is an excellent "bridgebuilder" in thorny situations. • Personal info: Hello all! It's been a great time since I've been made a steward back in 2011. I've since then been usually around. In the past year, I suffered from serious health issues from which I currently try to recover. That is the reason why I was not really active in the last term. I'm currently not sure how much my activity levels will rise. I already dropped a few rights in November last year and I guess it's simply about time to also drop my steward rights. I really enjoyed the time and I'd certainly love to keep my rights, but I'm currently not really helpful and have no clue when I will be able to return to some more stable activity. After thinking a long time about it, I decided to not seek confirmation this year. I will, however, try to stick around. -Barras talk 13:27, 30 January 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I'm mostly working with blocking spambots, and also sometimes requests via IRC every now and then need immediate response. Also I've started helping with steward's tickets starting last year. Comments about Bennylin[edit]

  • Remove Remove Sigh. I've always found Bennylin to be a nice guy, and I have never had an issue with his countervandalism/LTA work. However, over the last few years he has gone through long periods of inactivity. That in itself is not grounds to remove a steward considering the activity when he is active. But, I have noticed numerous errors in his handling of user rights requests, even multiple within a 24 hour period, showing that Bennylin is not up to date on current steward practices. If inactivity results in this, it is a serious issue. Regretfully, I have to vote remove, because if someone has to be continually checking over his work in this area, they might as well do it themselves. Issues as follows: not realizing that most bureaucrats cannot remove sysop, again two months later, [7], granting IP block exemption on a wiki with local admins, asking a user to canvass for a local adminship request, removing rights that an administrator can remove based on an OTRS ticket and IRC. Similar mistakes have been going on since back when I was a steward. --Rschen7754 14:05, 8 February 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Remove Remove, generally per Rschen7754. I am also concerned by a significant number of mistakes made by this user. Two points are particularly concerning: firstly, sending users who want to resign to local crats who cannot remove rights, secondly, removal of various Danny B. rights in cswiki (AFAIK there is a long conflict in Czech wikis involving among others this user, thus one should have been extremely cautious regarding such requests). In addition I see a logical problem in this: Bennylin does not remove sysop rights on plwiki because it has local crats but removes autopatroller rights on cswiki even though it has local crats and many local sysops who can remove those — NickK (talk) 14:00, 9 February 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Remove Remove Bennylin brings and has brought much valuable language expertise to the steward team, however the instances brought up by Rschen seem to indicate a pattern that is quite worrisome. We all make mistakes, and that's entirely fine. However, when mistakes are repeated and when post-incident handling is subpar, it's hard to support continued steward status. This is especially the case as no attempt has been made in this forum to respond to these concerns or propose ways to avoid repeating them :( Snowolf How can I help? 09:34, 28 February 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Personal info: I have been a steward for over 6 years now and have had many good experiences with the current/past stewards and would like to continue to do so. Although I haven't been active as I used to be, I am still around to deal with people who use the wiki to vandalize, spam, and the other kinds of abuse. I look forward to working with the current and future stewards this year.
